Good morning, everyone. I hope you’re all well-rested and ready to face the first outstanding day of Standard Time.
You may be asking yourselves, how did Georgia Southern vs. South Alabama end up being the introductory photo? After all, I’m not fond of the Eagles’ plain white “Penn State” pants, I’m not fond of hard-to-read-from-a-distance stars & stripes decals, and I’m really not fond of the Jags’ number font.
Two things about this game caught my eye. One, I like the concept of a white/blue/red uni. Two, I absolutely love South Alabama’s hooded warmups.
I’d seriously wear that. Has there ever been another team in any sport with warmups that were that much better than the game uniforms? If you can think of any, please share in the comments.
Obviously this matchup isn’t in the Top Five, and it isn’t in the running for the dreaded &1. So who made the list? We’ll find out after the rest of Sunday Morning Uni Watch. As always, we begin with our kickoff specialist, Terry Duroncelet. Take it away, Terry!
…..
I think a good name for Week 10 would be: Scripts, Stars ‘n’ Stripes, and Seasonal Stupidity (that last bit will be explained shortly).
From Tuesday
• FIU/New Mexico State: We begin with one of many teams wearing script decals for this week: Florida International. First these cheesy (but charming) togs, now this Florida-as-all-hell name (so much more fun than just ‘Panthers’). Now, I was only able to find info in fragments, so my apologies if I get any important details wrong, but from my understanding, the ‘Sunblazers’ moniker dates back to their D-II days from the ’60s, ’70s, and most of the ’80s. However, upon entering D-I in the late ’80s, they changed the name to ‘Golden Panthers’ (a local around the area), and then eventually simplifying it to just ‘Panthers’ in 2011. As for NM State, their lids were also quite nice.
• WKU/Kennesaw State: Appropriate all-black attire on All Hallows’ Eve Eve (not a typo) for the Hilltoppers.
From Thursday
• Tulane/Charlotte: The lids may not have been black, but the Green Black Wave definitely understood the assignment for Fright Night. Appropriate for a city rich in spooky lore like New Orleans. Also, this was technically a color-vs-color game.
From Friday
• Boise State/San Diego State: Now that October is officially over, we’re no longer subjected to teams being encouraged to wear the most outlandish non-colors and cursed combinations, so we can fully expect teams to comply with their actual school colors, almost as if there was some sort of school pride or something behind wearing said colors… RIGHT? Ugh. Boise State, you’re a day too late to the party. Do better. Also, this is a future Pac 12 Reloaded matchup.
• FAU/South Florida: Another team that thinks they can just wear BFBS the day after Halloween because they think it’s “close enough”: Florida Atlantic. How many times do I have to say it?! You come correct during the appropriate time of year, or don’t come at all. By that logic, stores would have all of their Christmas stuff on full display by mid-Septemb– …y’know what? I’m just gonna move on to Saturday.
From Saturday
• Rice/Navy: There were SEVERAL teams that did some sort of Salute to Service game, and I’m sure I’m gonna miss a number of them, but we’ll start with Rice, who wore these helmets against Navy (closer look). It’s giving 1976 Dallas Cowboys vibes, but with more Voting Season sprinkled on top.
• Miami (The U)/Duke: I hate this angle, but the Canes got in on the BECOME AMERICA train by camouflaging their endzone wordmark (it’s really the Dolphins’ wordmark, but still). They also wore their seldom-seen greens.
• Michigan State/Indiana: I know black and bronze were Michigan State’s, original colors, but still. They probably should change their school colors to black and blue after getting boxed up by a surprisingly successful Indiana squad.
• Illinois/Minnesota: Illinois wore all-orange against the Golden Gophers. Additionally, they wore decals featuring 10 stars; one for each of the 10 Illinois football players who died between WWII and the Vietnam War. They also wore helmet stripes that featured 189 names, all of whom were students and alumni who also lost their lives during WWI (closer look).
• Oklahoma/Maine: …Yeah sure, why not? (JV: You had me at “why”)
• Purdue/Northwestern: There were A LOT of script helmets over the weekend, and much like the GI Joevember demonstrations, I’m certain I’m gonna miss a handful,. but of the many teams scripting things was Northwestern, while Purdue wore white/black/white. Honestly? I like this look for the Boilermakers. I wouldn’t want to see it every week, but it’s a great alternate home look.
• Oklahoma State/Arizona State: Oklahoma State unveiled some cool striped components for their Homecoming game against Arizona State. It’s just that… most of them didn’t wear the cool striped long sleeved undershirts. The ones that… they had special-ordered… for the HOMECOMING GAME. I’m honestly surprised that a decent chunk of them even bothered with the socks.
• UCF/Arizona: In a game that features two teams that weren’t playing in the Big XII two years ago, UCF wore the newest iteration of their Citronauts/Space U uniforms (more info here). (JV: Forget what I said earlier…*this* was my # 6 matchup)
• Troy/Coastal Carolina: Troy took the script bandwagon and turned it to 11 (closer look at the helmets).
• South Alabama/Georgia Southern: S&S decals for the appropriately-acronymed USA (University of South Alabama).
• Baylor/TCU: Apparently, all the freaks that were supposed to go bump in the night on Thursday decided to save their shenanigans for the beginning of November.
• Tennessee/Kentucky: This is the only BFBS look I’ll accept, simply because of how well-put together this is, the high rate of contrast between the numbers and jersey color, even in the shadows. (JV: I love this too…just wish they wore it against a better looking opponent)
That’ll do it for Week 10! As always, be sure to check out Blaise D’Sylva for all your helmet needs, including the plethora of script and S&S/GI Joevember lids that I probably missed. See you next week!
…..
Thanks, Terry!
Canadian University Uni Watch
Returning for 2024 is Wade Heidt, who’s wearing a jersey created by the one and only Wafflebored (who took the photo as well). Now, let’s enjoy Wade’s look at the three-down, 110-yard game from up north.
…..
What time is it? It’s time for some university football uniform watching Canadian rules style! It’s time for the CUUW!
It’s also playoff time. The conference semifinals happened this weekend. As it is CUUW custom to look at all playoff games, we will view more games than usual. It will be rapid fire. Not a lot a new uniforms or unusual combos to analyze in the postseason. Just teams trying to look their best in the big dance. The CUUW will travel east to west.
We begin with the Atlantic conference. The AUS Semifinals.
*The St. Francis Xavier X-Men wore navy over navy at home in Antigonish, NS. The visiting Saint Mary’s Huskies went with their white over white combo. Though this may be the same uniform combo as we saw last week, it was not all boring. This was one of the upsets. Saint Mary’s advances.
*The Bishop’s Gaiters wore their purple over white combo at home in Lennoxville, QC. This weekend, I do not have complaints about what was worn by the visiting Acadia Axemen. Acadia went white over navy. Yes, there is a trend right now. If you wear purple uniforms in U Sports football, you are a team challenging for the Vanier Cup.
We move on over to the Quebec conference. The RSEQ Semifinals.
*In Quebec City, the Laval Rouge et Or wore their classic home look of gold/red/gold. The visiting Concordia Stingers had a good combo wearing white over maroon. (JV: I said it last week and I’ll say it with feeling today…OOO LA LA LAVAL!)
*The Montreal Carabins went blue from head to toe at home. The McGill Redbirds wore their white 150th anniversary helmets. It was a mono-white look for McGill. If there is ever a sure thing in sports, this is it. Laval and Montreal both advance.
We continue west to the Ontario conference. The OUA Semifinals.
*The Laurier Golden Hawks went mono-purple at home in Waterloo. Do I have to announce what the Queen’s Gaels wore? Of course you know! It was the classic mono-yellow for the Tricolour.
*In London, the Western Mustangs wore their usual purple over purple home combo. The visiting Guelph Gryphons kept it tame for them. Guelph going with the mono-white look from helmet to pants.
Finally, the Canada West Semifinals.
*In Winnipeg, the Manitoba Bisons wore their usual home uniform of black over black. The Regina Rams went with their white over white combo on the road. This was the biggest upset of the weekend. I imagine the Rams will keep the same combo next weekend when they travel to Saskatoon. Spoiler alert!
*The UBC Thunderbirds wore their usual navy over navy combo at home in Vancouver. The Saskatchewan Huskies wore their white over green combo. Yes, there is still the possibility (though really unlikely) of a Huskies vs. Huskies Vanier Cup.
That’s it for this weekend. Now there are 8 schools left. Time to collect those trophies with every win along the way to the big game.
…..
Thanks, Wade!
2024 Uni Tracking
Uni Watch will again track the combinations worn by the Power Four college football conferences. Long-time trackers Rex Henry (tracking the ACC), and Dennis Bolt (now tracking the Big Teen) are returning, as is Zach Wooldridge (tracking the SEC). This year Derek Buchheit will be tracking the Big “XII” for us.
Once again I’ll give you five really good matchups and the worst looking one of the week. Unlike most lists, it’s not an *exact* ranking. It’s the five matchups that caught my eye the most, then I rank those from 5 to 1. Agree or disagree, but either way let’s have some fun with it.
…..
Oh, what could have been…
Yesterday’s Maine/Oklahoma game was a Top Five lock, had the Sooners looked like the Sooners. Instead we got…this. I’d sooner watch all of The Wife’s Netflix shows than that stealthy mess. Oh well, I still managed to scrape together a list despite all the “Dark Mode” and “Let’s wear Penn State’s pants” shenanigans from this week. Let’s see who made it, beginning with…
5. The “Almost-Mono vs. Almost-Mono That Doesn’t Turn Me Off” Matchup:
North Carolina vs. Florida State
Those Tar Heel throwbacks should be required for any sun-drenched road game.
4. The “Optimal Contrast” Matchup:
Colorado State vs. Nevada
If CSU’s numbers were the same size as Nevada’s, this game could have contended for the top spot.
3. The “I’m Still Calling It The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” Matchup:
Florida vs. Georgia
Even though it isn’t color vs. color this year, I raise my glass to this matchup.
2. The “Alright, All-White, All-Right” Game:
Louisiana Tech vs. Sam Houston
Nice stripes, and properly-sized numbers for the Bulldogs.
1. Simply The Best:
USC vs. Washington
Never mind the Pac-12…this matchup is giving me some real Pac-10 vibes!
&1…Tulane vs. Charlotte
This Halloween matchup was scarier than anything I saw when I went trick-or-treating with the family.
And Thus Ends Another Weekend
Wednesday is going to be SO nice…
But then again, that’ll just mean more pharmaceutical ads, and the way-too-early Christmas commercials are coming. Anyway, thanks to McNeil (@Reflog_18 on Twitter) for the picture, and thanks to all of you for reading another Sunday Morning Uni Watch. Enjoy Phil’s weekday treasure trove of posts, and until I see you next weekend, take care, everyone.
The Indiana basketball warmups with the candy cane pants are pretty great and much better than their uniform.
Exactly the one I thought of.
Being a little biased since I’m a Gator fan. But, the Florida/Georgia game ALWAYS looks fantastic when Florida is the away team and wears blue pants. And, I completely agree with #1. Washington “looked” like Washington. Great color scheme. When they go gold/purple/gold they look great!
Dittos with ya, Jeff!
Penn State hosting Ohio State in mid-day sunshine doesn’t even get a mention? It may not happen again for a long time.
Not that I’m happy about the outcome, but I expected it.
I know that Penn St. at night seems like it could be intimidating, but during the day in the sunshine, it just looks like a lot of nursing students waving white pom-poms.
I thought it was kind of cold that they did the helmet stripe motif for the Ohio State game… link
I know this site is Uni Watch, not Nickname Watch, but “Big Game James” is the best ironic nickname I’ve ever heard.
I’ve featured Penn State at home during the day many times over the years.
Same with Ohio State at home during the day.
OSU on the road in the sun almost looks mono-white. Nike really needs to fiix the gray on those unis…then I’d consider this game.
My son and I had this exact conversation yesterday afternoon. Up until the early 2000s The Buckeyes pants were beautifully silver to match the helmets. They now suffer the fate of the Raiders. Technology that’s gone backward.
The demise of metallic pants is an underrated casualty of the modern uni era.
According to Blaise, the Illinois helmet stripe honors the 189 students and alum who died in WW 1, not 2.
10 Stars: The 10 stars around the helmet logo represent the 10 Fighting Illini football players who made the ultimate sacrifice for the security and freedom of our nation during WWII and the Vietnam War.
Memorial: Listed throughout the helmet stripe are the names of 189 students and alumni who died in WWI. These heroes are also honored on the Memorial Stadium columns.
However there is a typo in the post that states the names on the stripe are from WWII.
Fixed. Thanks!
That is correct but technically it’s 184 from WWI and 5 miscellaneous.
Great job crew, as always!
This week was a bit of a disaster uni-wise. I commiserate with Jimmer who had to scrape together a top 5.
Maybe this week it should have been reversed to a 1 & 5?
I (only semi-jokingly) suggested Jim should do a 1 & 5 with just the blackouts vs. Icy Whites.
That would have been horrible. Funny as Hell, but horrible LOL!!!
This may have been one of the worst outfitted college football weekends in a long time. I lost count of the number of mono white vs. mono black games that were on. This trend needs to die. I also called it before the season that we were going to see an overkill of script helmets.
Sidenote. Does anyone know what happened to ESPN’s College Football Final? Used to be able to find it on numerous ESPN stations all Sunday morning and now I don’t see it on at all. Been this way for a few weeks.
I don’t have any answers, just commiseration. ESPN used to have a single page with every score by conference by year. Eventually it was forgotten and even their customer service had no idea what I was talking about.
Whoo hoo! My Maine Black Bears never get a mention because they are an FCS school. Cool to see them represented here twice. Unfortunately OU ruined things both aesthetically and athletically, only one of which was expected.
I like Purdue’s white-black-white look, too. High contrast, obviously. It grabbed me the first time I saw it yesterday.
As alternates go, I have seen far, far worse.
Seeing that South Alabama header picture, I was sure Jimmer’s first comment would be about how they recycled the White Sox 70s-era shorts and dyed them red.
The late 70s-early 80s NBA was full of sweet warm ups – Showtime Lakers, Bird Celtics, Dr. J Sixers are just the tip of iceberg. Of course, I’m partial to Irish rainbow Bucks. link
True, but they had equally sweet unis.
I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a disconnect as big as the Jags’ between warmup and uniform.
“In Quebec City, the Laval Rouge et Or wore their classic home look of gold/red/gold.”
I really hope you meant to say tan/orange/tan, because that’s how the unis appear in the picture and I love them! It reminds me of a color combo the WLAF would have tried decades ago that we would still be pining for today.
If it were orange and tan, the team name would be “Orange et Beige.”
First, do all the Queen’s University teams wear one gold uniform? And second, has any team had but one uniform since the Houston Astros?
Other Queen’s teams have more than one uniform. Hockey, basketball, volleyball teams wore navy blue this weekend.
The Queen’s football team did experiment with using a second jersey. It was navy. Remember it about 20 years ago.
I don’t think I have ever seen a Queen’s team wear a white uniform in any sport.
While they had 2 sets of uniforms, both iterations of the Cleveland Browns opted to use just their white-over-white for all regular season games in ‘95 and ‘11.
Standard Time stinks ~ hate it gets dark so early
Even though Tulane’s unis were awful, their helmets were awesome! I love how the negative space creates a wavy stripe on the top.
I checked helmet history and see they wore similar lids in 2018. I don’t remember seeing them then.

Those chrome Oregon helmets remind me of ….something….

I’m a bit late, but warmup shirts that are superior to the match kits are fairly common in soccer, due to the high turnover rate of uniforms.
