Army Football to Wear Skull and Crossbones Helmet for Air Force Game Saturday

Add another all-black uniform to this weekend’s Spooky Season outfits.

Army football, whose colors are black and metallic gold, will be going all-black tomorrow when they take on Air Force at home in Michie Stadium, West Point.

It’s a big rivalry game, to be sure, but Army is also really good this season, sporting a 7-0 record and is currently ranked No. 21 in the nation. They’re one of several teams in the hunt for inclusion in the new 12-team Playoff. The highest-ranked “Group-of-5” team will earn an automatic bid into the field. The Black Knights will probably need to finish the season undefeated in order to make the playoff, so they’re taking every game very seriously.

Unlike the special uniforms Army wears when they take on Navy in the traditional end-of-season game, the Black Knights will be wearing their regular black jerseys and pants. But the helmet decals will be new.

In case don’t watch a lot of Army football, the team always carries a skull and crossbones flag onto the field for games.

For the Air Force matchup, the team will take the skull and crossbones from that flag, and will wear a skull and crossbones decal on their helmets. Unfortunately, the decal is black, and will be on a black helmet, so it won’t be visible from more than three feet away. Here are a couple looks at the decals on the helmets:

I love the decal, but I question the wisdom of putting a black decal on a black helmet. I mean, the players will know it’s there — and indeed it may provide an extra dose of motivation — but fans in the stands and those watching on TV won’t be able to see it, unless it’s in an extreme closeup. There’s nothing inherently wrong with a stealth helmet decal, but to me it kinda defeats the purpose.

The Black Knights and Falcons will kick off at 12:00 noon (ET) on Saturday, and will be shown on CBS.

In addition to all the evil and murder the Nazis perpetrated, they were also virulent plagiarizers.

Same. It’s gross and a little too on the nose for what the US Army’s actual objectives are.

The US Army’s objective is to risk their lives in order to defend our country against foreign enemies so that they can protect the Constitution. For example, the First Amendment, which guarantees our rights to pontificate our objective and subjective opinions on websites such as these.
I don’t care what symbol they want to wear on their helmet…
    they’ve earned it…

Potentially great BFBS helmet ruined by asinine decal color choice. Practically any color skull except black works well here. A stealth decal. Now that’s comedy!

I can see it plainly on TV. No big deal. And you guys comparing our guys to Nazis, these men and women are the lineage of the ones who DEFEATED THE Nazis. Use your brains.
