Philadelphia Eagles to Wear Kelly Throwbacks vs. Jaguars This Sunday

The Philadelphia Eagles kelly green throwbacks will make their 2024 debut this Sunday, when the team hosts the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The throwbacks — long anticipated once the NFL rescinded its “one shell” rule for the 2022 season — are fan favorites, and when finally unveiled last season, immediately there were calls to “Make These Permanent!”

You may recall that the throwbacks were leaked before their official unveiling, prompting the team to confirm the leaks as legitimate. At the time, Paul gave his take on the new throwbacks.

Leaving aside the theater of the leak and its acknowledgment, these uniforms (a) are not a surprise and (b) look great. Bonus points for the striped socks!

I should add here that I like the Eagles’ primary uniforms just fine. I know some fans don’t care for the darker midnight green shade, but I dig it. (Admittedly, there are very few shades of green I don’t like.) So it’s not like I needed the Kellys, because I have no problem with the midnights. Still, I have to say, these throwbacks looks really great.

I agree with Paul that the throwbacks looked really great, and while I’m not as big a fan as he of the Eagles current midnight green, those uniforms have actually grown on me since their introduction in 1996. But I’d still prefer to see the Eagles in kelly green over midnight any day of the week…and twice on Sundays.

So far, the Eagles have a perfect record in the throwbacks. They were worn twice last season — both victories — once against the Miami Dolphins in Week 7, and then again against the Buffalo Bills in Week 12.

The debut against the Dolphins was a Sunday Night Football prime time game. While the Eagles looked great, unfortunately Miami chose to go white/white/aqua/aqua. Normally I love when teams wear “light” dark colors and pastels, but this one didn’t look as great as it could have.

The Eagles won that game by a score of 31-17. At the time the Eagles record stood at 6-1. They would go on to win their next three games, leaving them at 9-1, when they welcomed the Buffalo Bills to town, and their second wearing of the throwbacks.

That was a better looking game, and the Eagles would win it 37-34 in overtime. That would raise their record to 10-1, putting them in the drivers’ seat for the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

Unfortunately, the victory over the Bills would be the high-water mark for the Eagles. After that game, they would win only one more game for the remainder of the season (finishing at 11-6) and losing a Wild Card game to the Tampa Bay Bucs.

The Eagles are hoping their good mojo in the kelly greens continues this Sunday as they hope to improve to 3-0 while wearing the throwbacks.

I’ve always preferred the Eagles in kelly green (although the throwback they chose isn’t necessarily my favorite kelly green uniform the Eagles have worn). But it was great to see them back on the field after so many years. I know there were some complaints that the helmets and jerseys kelly greens either didn’t match … or matched too well. That didn’t bother me, although there was definitely a different shade of kelly once the jerseys got wet, leaving the helmet slightly lighter.

That didn’t bother me (although mismatched helmets/jersey colors on other teams’ sometimes do). I was just happy to see the kelly green on the field again. And I’m looking forward to seeing it this Sunday.

What do you guys think of the kelly green throwbacks? Are they fun to see a couple times a season, or might the Eagles ponder a return to the color? Since the Eagles jersey wordmark changed for this season, that technically counts as a “redesign,” meaning they won’t be able to redesign for another four seasons. But should the team consider a permanent switch back to kelly green (even if it’s a different design than the current throwbacks)?

You’ll get your next chance to decide this Sunday. The game against the Jaguars will kick off at 4:05 pm (ET).

Love the Kelly Greens, although the helmets look a bit too “chalky” for my tastes…

Love the kelly green. I like their midnight green, but I don’t like it paired with black, like their black socks and undershirts. I would probably prefer any team with a darker shade of green to go with kelly green, including the A’s.

For the A’s, do you mean all instances of their darker green? Because I think their home and road caps are perfect as they are. I absolutely love their kelly green jerseys and own one, but it doesn’t look quite right paired with a hat in the same colour. Not sure what else they could wear though.

Disagree … gimme the super-stripey-sleeved Vermiels over these boo-enducing bland Braman era threads.
    YVVM of course ; )

Agree. Those funky stripes were really unique. Hard to do these days though, given the lack of sleeves.

I really like both kelly green and midnight green uniforms and both the old and new animal logos (not crazy about the new wordmarkt, though). I am totally undecided on which hue of green they should be in. I tend to associate (historically incorrect, I know, as the Eagles are older) kelly green with the J-E-T-S.

The thing I find the most interesting about the Kelly Green alternate is when the Eagles have a home game in which the players are wearing Midnight Green on the field. During those games, look at the Philly fans in the crowd. It’s starting to feel almost 50/50 in what color the fans in the crowd are wearing between Midnight Green and Kelly Green.

I’d say that if half your crowd is wearing Kelly Green on days when the team is wearing Midnight Green, it might be a sign that your fan base wants Kelly Green to be the permanent color.

Are there other fan bases that have half of their home crowd wearing a distinctly different color from an alternate uniform, even on days when the team isn’t wearing that uniform on the field?

I’d postulate that you’ll see a lot of powder blue-clad Phillies fans at the ballpark regardless of what the home team is wearing. By no means should that equate to switching to those full time (though I prefer the cream alt to the pins).
    Ditto for Carolina Panthers’ fans?

And I prefer the Phils in their classic whites with red pinstripes. It’s a crime those unis never made it to the field this postseason.

I’ve always had a few problems with these.
    1) I don’t need every color on every part of the uniform, but I do need every color on the helmet. I liked them better when they were just green and silver.
    2) As much as I like striped socks, I don’t like them when they are only on the pants and socks. There is a certain imbalance.

One part that’s unexpectedly grown on me: the silver (gray) pants. As more and more teams wear white socks/tights with white pants, the silver (gray) pants are a breath of fresh air (coupled with the striped socks)

I prefer the Kelly Green uniforms over the Midnight Green, but I would improve it by (1) increasing the black stroke on the jersey numbers and pant stripes and (2) making the shoulder numbers larger. This would match the look of the Eagles during the Randall Cunningham and Reggie White days.

I’d connect the wings on the helmet to the bumper better and I’d add something on the bumper. But I realllllllyy am bothered when the bumper is blank. I know it doesn’t bother many people.

Bothers the heck out of me. Also bothers me that the numbers that numbers and pants have black outline and the helmet wings do not

Oh no! I can’t unsee that now. Especially since the stripes on the pants have black outline too. Might as well take it all the way up to the helmet.

I would be interested to see the Eagles use their standard helmet wings used with their kelly green helmet. This fauxback would look sharp and honestly should be their primary.

It bothers the heck out of me that the numbers and pants have black outline, but the eagle wings on helmet do not

This particular Eagles uniform was worn for eleven years (85-95). But you know what was also worn for eleven years (74-84)? The endless stripes-ad-nauseam jerseys! I’m for bringing back the obsessive-compulsive seamstress design:

    Stripes are IN again!

I don’t mind the midnight green unis, except when they go mono and/or mix it with the black. It’s a unique color in the league and they kinda own it now. In fact, if they do redesign in 4 years, it would be awesome if they could blend the kelly with the midnight green somehow.

I like this mixing of greens idea. Should look very interesting, in combination with silver and black.

I sure do love these, even if the shade is a little different than the target era. They look fast. Great stripes.

I’d like to see the wings on the helmet connect above (“behind”) the bumper. Despite that and the lower contrast, I think I like these wings better than the heavily-outlined modern version.

I’d like to see a white road version of this with the same silver/grey pants. I actually wouldn’t mind the Eagles having like 5 uniform options if rules allowed. Even the weaker ones look relatively good, and it’s a strong core visual identity (winged hats and usually green somewhere).
