The Green Bay Packers have announced the team will wear their “50s Classic Uniform” when they return to Lambeau Field for the Week 9 matchup against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, November 3.
The look is an homage to the uniforms that the Packers wore from 1950-53.
According to the team, “The 50s Classic Uniform is inspired by the team’s uniforms from 1950-1953, which was the second time the team wore green and gold in its history. The uniforms are all green, with gold numbers and stripes, matching green pants with gold stripes, and green socks.”
The Packers first introduced the 1950s throwbacks in 2021, and have worn them once a season for the past three years.
Here are the dates and results:
October 24, 2021
Defeated Washington Football Team 24-10
October 16, 2022
Lost to New York Jets 27-10
November 19, 2023
Defeated Los Angeles Chargers 23-20
The team stated:
While the early 1950s were not a particularly successful time for the Packers on the field, it was the dawn of an extraordinarily eventful decade off the field, a decade that began with the departure of the team’s founder Curly Lambeau and ended with the arrival of Vince Lombardi. In the 1950s, the NFL was growing quickly and gaining nationwide interest through television exposure. The Packers organization was at a turning point and a franchise-saving stock sale helped lay the groundwork for the eventual construction of Lambeau Field and set up the team to stay in Green Bay through modern times.
Despite being a sartorially traditional team, the Packers have actually worn a fair amount of fauxbacks and throwbacks. They’re currently in the fourth year of this throwback, so assuming they wear it next season as well, they would then be free to introduce a new throwback from their 100+ year history.
The team has already prepped the helmets and uniforms. The team uses their current gold shelled helmet for the throwback, on which they remove the “G” decal and helmet stripe, and swap out the green facemask for a gray cage.
This will also mark the second time in three weeks that the Packers will be dressed in something other than their primary home or road uniforms. Last weekend, the Packers debuted their new white helmets, which they paired with their color rush alternate pants and road jersey.
I don’t love the Packers throwback (they’re another team whose regular uniforms are better than their throwbacks), but I’d much rather see them on the field than the new “Winter Warning” outfit they wore last weekend.
And with the Packers taking on the Lions, it could be a brutal looking game — the Lions have yet to pair anything besides solid white pants and white hosiery with their white jersey. The Lions did wear white over blue in pre-season, but have thus far only gone mono-white below the neck for road games.
What are your thoughts on the Packers throwbacks? If you’re a fan, would you like them to continue wearing them after their five-year requirement expires after next year, or should they dig deep into their own uniform history and introduce a new Classic uniform for the 2026 season?
Don’t really have an opinion on the Green Bay throwbacks (other than to agree that their regular set is better), but that shot of the Jets game really hammers home how bad the last Jets uniforms were.
The green helmet (with no black), white jersey (with no black), and black stripeless pants/socks is an awful look.
I just think if you’re going to have specific colors in your uniform, they should be pretty consistent across all parts. This looks like the Jets forgot to bring their pants and had to borrow some from another team.
Well you do have to get close enough to see the black on the Jets previous helmets and jerseys – the helmets had a black facemask and there were black outlines on the jersey numbers. In that photo the Jets’ player’s is obscuring the truncated green stripe on the pants- but again you have to be close to see the stripe in most circumstances.
They’re not great, not the worst they’ve had, but waiting on the day that they could introduce a home version of the throwbacks worn at Detroit in the 2001 Thanksgiving game.
Pretty please, with sugar on top, Lions…wear the silver pants.
I prefer The ‘94 Pack throwbacks with navy tops/yellow yolks and khakis…wouldn’t mind seeing a back-to-the-80s retro look featuring the sleeve logo-ed jerseys (probably be big sellers in the retail market) and hip numbers.
I love these uniforms but why can’t they just wear the regular helmet logos and stripes?
Well, it’s a throwback. So they’re wearing solid gold helmets like were worn with the original…

Right. I think the point here is that paired with the normal helmet, it would make a solid uniform.
This.
Lions should go Silver/White/Silver/Blue. It would look good against the nearly all green.
Would be nice if Detroit had a white throwback jersey…
Whatever the Lions wear, they’ll kick the sh…. out of GB, so, I’m all for it.
Can I just say…. for a guy(you) so against corporate branding, patches, logos, what not…. this website has some of the WORST adds(pervasive) on earth.
Of all the Packer throwbacks this one is my favorite. Would love to see a throwback of the 60s especially the striped socks
Still hoping for a 1935 throwback for 2026
Well, it is a throwback but not an eyepleasing one because of the mono green. Still better than the icy white with the gold helmet stripe missing.
