Texas A&M Unveils New “Blackout” Uniforms for Saturday Night Game vs. LSU

Just in time for a Prime Time, pre-Halloween matchup with LSU, the Texas A&M Aggies have unveiled a new “blackout” BFBS uniform. As my pal and SMUW honcho Terry Duroncelet often notes, “Spooky Season” brings out lots of BFBS and all-black uniforms — and the closer they’re worn to Halloween, the more apropos they are for the time of the season. It’s not that BFBS is necessarily appropriate, but definitely more acceptable if worn near Halloween.

We’ll start with the reveal video. Of course, A&M players and coaches have been encouraging people to wear black to Kyle Field Saturday night.

Unfortunately (and as is par for the course on social media of late), the Aggies didn’t release an full views of the uniform via photos, but I was able to make a few screengrabs, and the team did unveil some photos showing parts of the uniforms. In this case, that’s actually OK, since the new black jerseys and pants are essentially identical to the team’s regular maroon uniforms.

But the big difference — and probably the star of the show — is the new black helmet with “Aggies” written in white script.

This will not be the first black helmet the team has worn. In 2012, the team wore a black helmet with a slight fade to maroon (as well as a monoblack uniform) for a game against Mississippi State. And in 2015, the Aggies would wear another another black helmet (and BFBS uni) for two games. This will be the first time “Aggies” in script has ever appeared on an A&M helmet. Besides “Aggies” written in white script on both sides of the helmet, “Aggies” in script will also appear on the nose bumper. The facemask for this helmet will also be black.

Over the past several seasons, Texas A&M have pretty much stuck to traditional uniforms — in fact the last time the team wore an alternate was in 2018, when they sported “1998 throwbacks.” So, while they don’t get a free pass this time around, there is historical precedent for wearing an all-black uniform, they haven’t worn an alternate uniform in six seasons, AND the game is just a few days before Halloween.

Here are some more (partial) looks at the uniforms to be worn on Saturday night:

The new black uniforms are very plain. The chest features “TEXAS A&M” as a wordmark in white, along with white uniform numbers (which feature perforations). The SEC logo and maker’s mark are also in black, adding to the plainness of the unis. There are no stripes on the jerseys or the pants, and the jersey back will have player NOB in white block letters, and white numbers in the same style as the front. The only other adornment on the uniform is white TV numbers on the sleeve caps.

As mentioned above, the team has worn black helmets in two previous seasons. Those were worn with full black uniforms which are slightly different from the one’s they’ll debut tomorrow evening.

2012

The 2012 uniforms had maroon stripes across the shoulders (the team’s uniform style at the time), as well as beveled numbers. The black helmets featured the classic “aTm” logo in white.

2015

These were similar to the 2012 black uniforms, but the helmet featured a “ghosted” aTm logo, and the only maroon on that uniform was the “TEXAS A&M” wordmark and player NOB. Unfortunately, maroon doesn’t show up particularly well on a black uniform, so the NOB, and to a lesser extent the wordmark, were only visible up close.

_________

I’m not particularly a fan of the aTm black uniforms, but being that the Aggies have a history with BFBS uniforms AND the fact that they’re being worn so close to Halloween, I can live with them for one game.

As noted, the Saturday night game will be against LSU. Interestingly, despite wearing their all-white alternates last week, the Tigers will be rolling them out again against aTm, so we’ll be treated to a “blackout vs. Icy White” game.

I wonder if that’ll put this game on Jimmer Vilk’s 5 & 1 on the bad side.

The game kicks off at 7:30 pm (ET) on Saturday night, and will be shown on ABC.

Your thoughts?

“Halloween season” or not, it’s not an excuse for BFBS. Are we going to see teams in the expanded CFP swap their normal colors for green and red because it will be “Christmas season” when the first games are played?

The fact that LSU is even in consideration for the &1 is a sure sign of calamity.

I have faith that some game will look even worse, though.

It’s the “Tigers rolling out the whiteout look two weeks in a row” that really puts it over the top for me, Jim.

This is pandering on so many levels I don’t even know where to start. LSU has a top 5 look in college football and they’re basically now telling everybody “we don’t care about any of this, every other school is doing whiteout nonsense so we’re gonna do it TWICE.”

    This!

Hate that they’re playing with their look so much when they had a simple formula of white at home unless playing a non conference team and white on the road all the time!

As a lifetime LSU fan and an LSU alum, I’m tired of the white helmets and white pants. LSU needs 1 helmet and 1 pair of pants. The white helmets and white pants should be burned, especially because the striping pattern of those two don’t match the striping pattern of either the jersey or the pants.

Oh boy. How original…… And a script “Aggies” on the helmet. That’s original too. May need to see if I can find an old black & white TV. I obviously am needing my HDTV less and less LOL Hate to sound so negative when there are SO many great uniforms out there. I just hope this trend will someday be laid to rest.

Yawn. Meh. Whatever. All boring, repetitive crap. No ideas. No style. Need a long (permanent?) break from the “news” on this site.

The biggest shock to me is the adidas logo being camouflaged into the uni. I thought that was a big no-no.

This is just so, so tired and played out. Why is this the one trend that won’t ever seem to die?

Boring, tired, unoriginal, soulless, and altogether lame. Totally devoid of color, character, inspiration, or fun. This is paint-by-numbers with a Sharpie.

Change “Texas” to [name of state] and this could be any land-grant university in the country. In fact, just make it say “COLLEGE” and then they can re-use the same hype video for the next school.

I’m so sick of the “well, they’re wearing monochrome so we’ll forget our classic regular uniforms to go all white” trend.

Sorry. I meant “icey whites” because nowadays whites are always icey.

    WFWS

my fave A&M unis is the all-maroon. I didn’t like the black 2015 with ghosted logo. the 2012 black one was okay. I typically prefer only traditional unis, but I do kind of like these except for the helmet with the cursive writing, why do that? it should be the state of texas outline with a bold and visible ATM inside of it. but imo the Aggies should always wear all maroon solids at home or anywhere else if the opposing team chooses white
