Previewing The NFL’s Week 8 Sunday Uniform Matchups

We’ll have some good looking games this Sunday, but there will also be some awful uniform combos, and a good number of teams haven’t revealed what pants they’ll be combining with announced jerseys, leaving the potential for some new combos (as well as some really bad looks). The “big” uni game will have the Tampa Bay Bucs wearing their Bucco Bruce throwbacks, but that matchup may not be so great.

Let’s take a look at how the uniform matchups for Week 8 are playing out. This post will be updated once teams who have not announced full combos do so.

__________
Arizona vs. Miami

Right out of the gate, we get one of the worst uni matchups, with the Cardinals in their standard white helmet/red everything else against the all white Dolphins. This game is in Miami, though, so it’s a rare all-red game for Arizona on the road.

_________
Atlanta vs. Tampa Bay

The Bucs will be wearing their glorious creamsicle throwbacks in this one, while the Falcons will be going black/white/black/white. The modern Falcons uni won’t mesh too well with the Bucs’ throwbacks, but it’s probably the best possible combo for Atlanta.

__________
Baltimore vs. Cleveland

This is probably going to be a very good looking matchup! The Ravens will be in Black/White/Purple/White, and the Browns will be breaking out the orange pants to pair with their home brown jerseys — the “Kardiac Kids” look! The colors should all work well together, and it’ll have a very “fall” feel. Definitely looking forward to seeing this one on the field!

__________
Green Bay vs. Jacksonville

A week after going mono-white, the Packers will be back in their standard road uniforms for this matchup. The Jaguars will counter with their rarely worn black/teal/teal/white outfit. This probably won’t see the bad side of the Five and One, but it’s not likely to see the good side either.

__________
Indianapolis vs. Houston

This game is going to look almost as good as possible, with the Colts in their standard roads and blue socks. If only Houston would have selected navy socks, it would look better — but it’s not the worst possible look these two teams could feature.

__________
New York Jets vs. New England

Welp. A week after wearing their silver/gray pants with their white jerseys(!), the Pats will be back in mono-blue below the neck. The Jets will counter with green/white/green/green. Not particularly excited to seeing two teams in dark pants AND socks facing off.

UPDATE: According to Jets Twitter, the team will wear green/white/green/white.

__________
Philadelphia vs. Cincinnati

The Eagles haven’t announced which pants they’ll pair with their green helmets and jerseys, but it’s almost certainly going to be all white below the waist. Of course, the Bengals are wearing their “White Bengal” look for the game, and have called for a white-out for the fans. I love the Bengals in all white, but not excited at the prospect of the Eagles going all-white pants/socks.

UPDATE: As expected the Eagles will be wearing white pants and socks.

_________
Tennessee vs. Detroit

Despite the apparent hideousness of this matchup (and indeed, it could look awful), this is one I really need to see on the field. But with three different shades of blue (navy and powder for Tennessee and Honolulu Blue for Detroit), I’m not getting my hopes up here. Plus, the Lions should never go monolulu blue. Maybe this one will surprise me, looks wise.

__________
Buffalo vs. Seattle

Buffalo has three combos I like: white/blue/white/blue, white/white/white/blue, and what they’re wearing this Sunday: white/white/blue/white. Seattle is back in their regular mono-navy homes. It won’t be the worst looking game this weekend, but I doubt it will sniff the 5 & 1.

__________
New Orleans vs. Los Angeles Chargers

As of this writing, neither team has declared which pants they’ll be pairing with their jerseys. But with the Saints track record this year of never wearing their primary gold pants, I imagine they’ll be mono-white below the neck.

UPDATE: The Saints will wear black pants and socks with their gold helmets and white jerseys.

UPDATE #2: The Chargers will wear their white pants and powder blue socks.

__________
Carolina vs. Denver

This is another game where neither team has declared their pants choice. Will this be the week the Broncos go mono-orange below the neck? They’ll probably wear white pants and socks, but how great would it be if they actually wore white pants and orange socks? As for the Panthers, they have at least three pants possibilities, plus socks. Ideally, I’d love to see them in Process Blue pants and black socks. This *could* look good, but again, I’m not getting my hopes up.

UPDATE: The Panthers will wear their white pants and Process Blue socks for this one.

__________
Chicago vs. Washington

The Bears haven’t actually declared their pants yet, so the above graphic may not be what’s actually worn in this game, but I wouldn’t bet against it. If there was ever at time for da Bears to wear white pants with their white jerseys, this is it, but according to the GUD, they haven’t done that since 2009! With the Commanders confirmed in their BFBS uniforms, this won’t be a particularly colorful matchup.

___________
Kansas City vs. Las Vegas

The Chiefs haven’t yet declared whether they’ll wear white or red pants, but either way, this will be a fantastic looking game. In recent years, the Chiefs have gone with red pants as well as with white pants. I’d actually prefer them in white pants (my personal preference for their road look), but either set will be fine. It’s hard to see this not being the best uni matchup of the Weekend.

__________
Dallas vs. San Francisco

This could be another good looking game, with the 49ers wearing their red throwbacks against the Cowboys, who’ll be in their regular white uniforms. Of course, an even better looking game would have the 49ers in their regular home uniforms, which would be an all-time classic matchup. I’m normally a big fan of throwbacks, but the Niners are definitely one team whose regular uniforms are far superior.

_________
And there you have it — a look at all the uni matchups for Week 8. The MNF game will feature the Giants in their red-heavy road uniforms against the Pittsburgh Steelers in their all-black Color Rush unis.

Thanks, Jay. Post updated to reflect this (interestingly, the GUD has “TBA” for both pants and socks on their main page, but if you click the specific game, they show green pants and socks).

I saw that; I think it was based on a social-media post from a couple of days ago showing that but not saying that that’s what they’re wearing.

    Yes…they do. But don’t:

Overall, some real clunkers this week.
If KC opts for white-over/white, it’s a sure bet for numbero uno.

Every time the Cowboys wear their white primary jerseys you can see three shades of blue on the field.

I had forgotten about the “camo” on the Commanders’ black uniforms.
IMO that’s the single worst uniform set in the NFL. Totally incongruous from home to away to alt, no real “story” or anything that presents a strong team identity (especially the white). It just looks like Nike took all their scraps from other uniforms and Frankenstein’d something together at the last minute.
Their home uniforms with the gold pants at least look decent from a distance, but up close they’re almost as bad as the white and black.
I don’t really have much of a problem with the Commanders team name. It’s just the uniforms are terrible.
We have what–minimum two? three? years left on this mess? I sincerely hope the new ownership throws these things in the garbage and starts over with one guiding principle: burgundy and gold.

I know you put “camo” in quotes, but there’s nothing camo on the Commanders all black uniforms. Do they somewhat resemble a *military* uniform? Yes. Especially with the numbers and the “name badge” on the chest. But there’s nothing camo about these.

I thought the pants stripe (something lacking on the yellow, white, and red ) was camo.
    link
    Geez…that a lotta britch options!

    That just makes it worse!
It looked to me like an interpretation (loose term) of digital camo. What is it, then?
That uniform is just such a failure at nearly all levels (their regular burgundy helmet is fine in my opinion, but that’s pretty much it).

Did a little more digging, and according to the team, they’re supposed to be camo (although the execution is obviously terrible).

“The black uniforms come with another more military reference; there are camo stripes, which were custom designed for the uniform, that represent an ownable DC narrative.”

Couldn’t reply directly to Phil, so replying to myself

Sorry–I may have been being a little dense. Thought you were saying they never intended it to be camo, not that it’s such a poor job that it’s simply not camo. For the record, I agree with that!

Yes. That’s what I was saying. They may *say* it’s camo…but it ain’t.

Thanks! Post now updated (this one was an almost certainty from the get go. The Eagles have been wearing only white pants/hose together for a couple years now).

Where have the black socks gone? Black is the only color socks that they should be wearing with either white or green pants! I can’t stand the white tights look!

Overall, I really don’t mind the Lions in Monolulu Blue. Not my favorite look, but I can live with it. This week though? Yeah, it’s a blue overload. Titans need an overhaul.

Thanks for adding this weekly preview. Dare I say Ravens/Cle may actually be #1 over Vegas/KC❓

Man, I wish the NFL and all sports besides soccer would adopt the color VS color matchup. Just do like soccer and make it so no part of the uniforms clash if possible.

Phil any chance you can try to do an interview with whoever makes the uniform decisions for the Patriots? I think if you polled fans, 90%+ would vote for the silver/gray pants and to ditch the mono blue forever, yet the team continues to resort back to the blue scuba suits. It defies common logic and must be explored.

Why, just why……….. do the Lions keep doing the mono thing? This would have been a GREAT weekend to go gray/blue/gray/blue…… But they had to f*** that up. Once again, who makes this call? Ownership? Coaches? Players? I know with the Cubs, it used to be up to the starting pitcher, on the road, if they wore gray or blue jerseys.
