Yesterday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced they will wear their all-black “Color Rush” uniforms against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.
The Steelers, fresh off their SNF victory over the New York Jets while wearing their Super Bowl IX throwback uniforms, will try to go 2-0 against New York teams in Prime Time games while wearing alternates.
This is the 2024 debut for the Color Rush uniform.

The uniform is a black jersey with gold numbers and gold stripes on the sleeves, while the pants are all black, with a gold stripe. The team wears black socks to complete the head-to-toe-black look. According to the Steelers, “The Color Rush uniform has become a favorite with players and fans alike, a monochromatic look that was first introduced to wear primarily on Thursday Night Football.”
There are very few CR uniforms I have liked, but the Steelers CR is definitely one of my favorites. Rather than simply adding black pants to their regular jerseys, the jersey and pants were created as a uniform. They removed all white from the jersey, and replaced it with gold. In addition, the team used a block number font which was worn prior to the team changing to futura italic in 1997. The pants were the inverse of their primary gold pants, with gold and black swapping places for the CR.
“It’s a different jersey,” said defensive tackle Cameron Heyward. “I like to think we win more than we lose in them. We usually do it for a night game, and it provides an intensity and a rush, no pun intended. It’s a good time to show off some cool jerseys. It gets the fans going. It looks like a black hole when you see the black and gold. Everybody has their old-school jerseys, but it’s nice to bring something new school to the party.”
The team does win more than they lose in them. Since their introduction in 2016, the team has worn the CR uniforms 10 times, compiling a 7-3 record. Look good, feel good, play good?
The players love the look.
“It’s an awesome uniform,” said tight end Pat Freiermuth. “It brings the collective together. It’s something different, something to look forward to, to get up for. When you wear a different uniform in a game, it’s cool. Plus, all-black is a sweet uniform. It’s cool.”
Added safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, “I just like the all-black look. I think it looks sleek.”

There aren’t too many all-black uniforms I like, but if you’re going to wear black, you must have a black helmet. And black must be an official team color. Pittsburgh has both of those covered. In fact, the only all-black uniform I think looks as good (if not better) is the Ravens all-black uni.
This will be yet another prime time game where at least one team wears an alternate uniform. I haven’t looked at the stats recently, but I’d say that at least one team has worn an alternate in a Thursday, Sunday or Monday Night game about 50% of the time. This Sunday the 49ers will wear their red throwbacks, and for Thursday Night, all we know (according to the GUD last night) is the Rams will wear their “bone” jerseys. So at least two of the three prime time matchups this weekend will have one team in an alternate.

As far as CR uniforms go, how do you feel about the Steelers? Is it one of the better ones? And what do you think about teams wearing alternates for prime time games? Should fans who may not otherwise watch a certain team see them in something other than their primary home (or road) unis? Or is prime time the best time to wear an alternate?
The floor is yours.
Its an ok set.
If they would have narrow yellow stripes on the pants to match the narrow yellow stripe on the helmet that would improve it.
Also make the helmet and jersey logo yellow and black only, to actually have a total white-free look.
Rather they not mess with the helmet.
However, your suggestion to narrow the pant stripes would be good…adding hip numbers that mirror the helmet would be great!
Make it a throwback instead: wear the jersey with the yellow helmet and white pants as they used to.
I’d rather they combine the two for a new look. Definitely agree on bringing back the yellow helmets, but I think the black pants look better than the white pants did.
Glad I’m not the only one who’d love to see the yellow helmets make a return. Something about those just screamed good, ol’ fashioned, fingers in the dirt football. Would also like to see the Batman cape era
One of the very few CR sets that I do like.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, there is no gold on these uniforms. That color is called yellow.
You can call it “yellow” if you want, but the team calls it gold. That’s how it is referred to on UW.

I’m not a fan of monochromatic uniforms in general. The problem with the Steelers Color Rush uniforms is the lack of white. Even a small bit of it as an accent color on their regular jerseys somehow makes the black and gold pop bigger. Those two colors seem dull and muted by comparison without the white. It admittedly could also be that these uniforms have primarily been worn at home, at night in a stadium that seems not as brightly lit as some other NFL stadiums.
Instead of the “need more cowbell” meme, we need a “need more mono-unis” meme LOL
Not horrible, but unnecessary, just wear the block white numbers again…
I know eyes (and maybe heads) would roll, especially here on UW, but if the Steelers are going to have a “Color (sic) Rush” uniform, there’s only one suitable choice of colour – and it’s not black.
I really miss the Steelers set with that sweet yellow helmet
I’m surprised you didn’t point out that it will be pretty much be a Spy vs. Spy game, since the Giants will be going with white jerseys and white pants. Not as much as if we wore our Color Rush fauxbacks, since those are usually worn with white socks, but still.
Meh.
Omg Ther terrible awful ugly you name it I hate all black uniforms They should trash them right away Why don’t Steelers ever wear All white uniforms now your talking These Dark color uniforms are pathetic Save your article time who cares no one likes them
So (yawn) exciting (yawn)
In before people complain about the yellow pants stripe not matching the yellow jersey numbers.
These never really did it for me, they lose a lot with the absence of white. They remind of a knockoff jersey you might find in a discount store.
On the promo’s left photo, I spy a thin, brighter gold (more yellow) outline on the numbers and stripes, including the helmet. On the right photo, and through the Steelers’ CR photo gallery, such is either not there or less noticeable, or it might be the stitching in a titch brighter color. Most likely it’s just an enhancement for the promo, but for those looking for some contrast, it offers a small reward.
Too much yellow: no stripes anywhere and just yellow outlines for numbers and NOB only. Helmet all black, no visible team logos. If you insist on monochrome, go all the way and eliminate the yellow (almost). The players will sleep in them, as will fans who do not know what the Steel Curtain means.
I’m attending my first Steeler game in 14 years Monday night and they trot out these costumes, yuck. I was looking forward to two classic looks on the field. They need to bring the bumblebees back, and fast!
And why the block numbers??? I don’t understand that choice at all. Go with the futura font, make the helmet numbers match, and maybe it won’t be such a dissappointing set.
This all black set is sweet – but it is a mistake not to a alter the helmets, too – take off the white numbers and the right-sided helmet logo – then you’ve got an outstanding mono look
