Phoenix Suns Tease New City Edition Uni, Appearing to Confirm Earlier Leaks

The Phoenix Suns are teasing a new uniform, and it appears that it provides confirmation of the City Edition uniforms which leaked last month.

The Suns on Monday tweeted a closeup shot of the waistband of the purported 2024-25 City Edition uniform, showing a saguaro cactus sitting atop a star at the center.

If confirmed, the City Edition jersey should look like this:

Shortly after that jersey was leaked, we also got a look at what should be the new shorts the team will pair with the uni:

The Suns tweet basically confirms the shorts will look like the above.

The jersey is purple, and features a black, green and orange striping pattern around the neck and arms. “THE VALLEY” is stacked and in a western font face. “THE” is smaller and rendered horizontally, while “VALLEY” is slightly larger and radially arched. The lettering is white with an orange outline. Beneath THE VALLEY is an orange star. Side panels are orange and purple, with triangle (pyramid?) shapes and blocks forming the pattern.

If the jersey looks somewhat familiar, that’s because it’s taking its cues from the uniforms used in the 1995 NBA All-Star game. Next year marks the 30th Anniversary of that game.

You’ll note the 1995 ASG uniforms are similar, with the orange star taking the same shape as the star on the leaked City Edition jersey. The 1995 uniforms also featured a green saguaro cactus stacked atop the orange star. While the jerseys apparently won’t have that feature, the cactus is present on the waistband of the shorts (although rendered slightly differently — the City Edition waistband cactus stalk drops below the star, whereas on the ASG jerseys, it was contained within the star).

The shorts themselves are also purple, with a black, orange and green waistband. The same pyramidal/block pattern from the jersey is repeated down the sides of the shorts. At the base of the left thigh is the Suns logo, and the hems are trimmed with a black/orange/green stripe.

Shortly after the jerseys were leaked, “Suns geek” did a nice breakdown of the new uniforms, which is worth a quick watch:

The team has not officially unveiled the new City Edition uniforms, but with the teaser tweet, it’s likely they’ll be unveiled soon.

I was never a big fan of NBA design in the 1990s, particularly the (then) new sublimation aspects, but I’ve always loved the 1995 All-Star game uniforms, so I’m a fan of the team harkening back to those with this new uniform. Of course, I think almost everyone will agree that NBA teams already have far too many uniform choices, and the “City Edition” uniforms — now going on for more than five years — have resulted in some terrible designs (in most cases, because it appears designers are running out of ideas). And I think most of us would agree the 2024-25 uniforms (based on the leaked photos) for the most part are pretty terrible.

There are a few good ones, however, including the Suns new City Edition uniform. It’s one of the few I’m actually looking forward to seeing on the court.

What do you guys think of the Suns (alleged) new City Edition uni? Were you a fan of the 1995 ASG uniforms from which these take their inspiration? Or do you think the whole City Edition program — which may have been kinda fun for a few years — has more than run its course?

Fire away!

This made me chuckle. Spot on. Nicely done. Was trying to come up with something clever with regards to the ‘next step’ – but nothing is sparking. “The Team”? “The Basketballers”? It’s all so ridiculous.

I like those a lot! Love some different color schemes. Wish the Spurs would go to a fiesta theme full time.

Honest question because I just don’t know local people actually refer to the Phoenix area as “The Valley” or is this a completely made up thing.

See my comment below. But outside of one sports talk guy, I’ve heard this since I’ve lived here for the past 34 years. But nobody says they are from the “Valley of the Sun”.

Yes, the Phoenix Metro area has definitely been called “The Valley” for a very long time (decades) and continues to be. If you ever were to watch a local news broadcast (although I wouldn’t recommend it), I bet they say “The Valley” 100 times.

Memphis is just as bad since the show “Bluff City Law” came out a few years ago. News channels constantly say “The Bluff City”. So, I’m waiting on the Grizzlies to come out with a jersey with that on it.

There is a local sports radio guy who has said for years that the Phoenix topography isn’t a valley, but is actually a basin. He calls the radio listeners “basinonians”. So he probably doesn’t like this. I’m assuming this will have a front number.

I’m have so many issues with this uni, but I will try to critique them in as much of a vacuum as possible and not simply as the all star uni with some tweaks. The side panels do not match. The purple is too desaturated to work with the rest of the color scheme. The bland western font of the valley is a total mismatch for the wacky 80s/90s vibe that the rest of the uni puts off. Not nearly enough white elements to make the color scheme pop. The star is obviously supposed to be the all star game star but it’s not. It looks more like the intentionally skewed aloinestars logo than the cockeyed star from the ASG uni. Anyway, I guess this is what they’re getting. I look forward to my nephew wanting one for Christmas.

Not impressed at all with this lazy design that lacks attention to details. As much as I like stars on uniforms I like them symmetrical. The font is a mismatch, the lettering is too narrow, there is no number on the front. Very underwhelming.
