ISU Cyclones Hoops Unveil New White Uniform with Return of “Dribbling Cy” Logo

Following the recent release of their new gold alternate uniforms, the Iowa State Cyclones have now unveiled a new white uniform.

The new uniforms, like the new gold alternates, are throwbacks. The team unveiled a video referencing the originals and then showing many shots of the new uniform. The highlight of the new uniforms is the “Dribbling Cy” logo (seen in the splash above), which will appear on the right thigh of the shorts.

At the time the video was released, the team had not released any decent still photos. However, last evening they did release several. I had made some screen grabs which show the some of the details.

The uniform is really nice, and features Iowa State’s cardinal and gold colors as accents. Both jersey and pants are white, with the jersey containing cardinal/gold/cardinal striping around the neck and the arm slots. “IOWA STATE” is in a vertically arched thin block font, rendered in red with gold outlines.

Numbers are in a varsity block font, in cardinal, with gold outlines.

The rear of the jersey has a solid red NOB, with numbers in cardinal outlined in gold (same style as on the jersey front).

The shorts feature a red/gold/red waistband, with red/gold/red striping down the sides of the pants, as well as on the shorts’ hems. The “Dribbling Cy” logo appears on the right thigh.

You can see several addtional photos in the gallery below:

The new uniforms are considered to be throwbacks, which is a nice touch. Here’s how they compare to the previous white uniform the team wore:

I really like the new (old) uniforms! Unlike the ISU football team, which seems to love BFBS and fears almost any gold, the basketball team likes to stick with school colors. Their previous white uniforms weren’t bad, although the gold “CYCLONES” wordmark was somewhat difficult to read, and the unis had tiled side panels that didn’t do the uniform any favors. Obviously, the new unis have jettisoned those, and used the beautifully arched “IOWA STATE” wordmark in cardinal, outlined in gold, which is easier to read.

Well, done, ISU!

What do you think of the new uniforms?

Have they made an official change in their shade of red? The new red seems right to me; maybe last year’s unis were the change?

Overall, a big improvement. Addition by subtraction, I think.
I will say I prefer when teams have their team name (“Cyclones”) on their home unis and city/school/whatever (“Iowa State”) on the away, but that’s a minor preference for me.

The new uniforms appear to simply be an option in the rotation for what the Cyclones can wear this year. The “old” uniforms referenced in the story will still be the regular home uniforms while the throwbacks will be considered an alternate.

What an upgrade! I especially like the dribbling Cy logo on the shorts. They should do that for all the sports: batting/pitching Cy, hockey Cy, volleyball Cy, etc.

They had a number of these in the 1970s and 1980s.

You could tell this was coming this summer in Central Iowa…all of new merch had dribbling Cy on it. A bit bittersweet…scarcity used to make these kind of rare and special. Either truly old stuff from back of a closet or small brands that made vintage licensed apparel. Soon to be more ubiquitous, but oh well, I like it too!

These are beautiful. Always love a retro mascot on the shorts (KU for one). Everything is tasteful. Its almost as if they were designed to look good (not for schtick).

These are some of the most boring uniforms I’ve ever seen. It did take them more than three minutes to design?

Iowa State “red” is cardinal. Unfortunately, because Iowa State is not one of the big “names” for the uniform suppliers, they often get Southern Cal colors (which is usually more maroon than cardinal). Last year looks more “maroon” to me. As a Cyclone, this year’s colors look better.

This logo is a prime example of “just because it’s old doesn’t mean it’s good”. I like a retro, cartoony, anthropomorphic logo, but this looks like it was designed in about ten seconds by someone who is “ok” at drawing.
