[Editor’s Note: This afternoon we have a piece from our own Jamie Rathjen, a UVa alum, who brings us a look at Virginia’s new baseball uniforms. Enjoy! — PH]
by Jamie Rathjen
Virginia baseball revealed new uniforms today from EvoShield, a company that makes a lot of baseball equipment besides jerseys, caps, and pants, such as catchers’ gear and batting helmets.
The reveal video showed four different jerseys: solid blue, orange, and white, as well as orange with blue pinstripes, all with the same “Virginia” script. There is an additional white jersey with blue pinstripes shown in this article from Virginia. It promises “seven different uniform looks,” so we may not have seen them all yet. We only have the video and a handful of other pictures to work with for now.
A partnership for success. Thank you @EvoShield https://t.co/T9bA1EDCBy

All the jerseys were shown with white pants except for the orange pinstriped design, which has matching pants (!).
I am a big fan of colorful baseball and softball uniforms, so the mono-pinstriped orange look is something I can absolutely get behind. I’m continually impressed with Virginia’s athletic department for getting creative without resorting to the non-school-color tropes that plague so many of their counterparts — an example being the football combo from two weeks ago, which recreated the 1989 uniforms with the current set. Baseball actually represents one of the few exceptions to that claim, having worn camo in the past, but eventually came to its aesthetic senses.
The team is again striking out on its own, having only switched to school outfitter Nike in the 2020-21 school year when the whole athletic department got new uniforms. Before that, it was with Rawlings.
According to Virginia, the uniforms will formally be revealed at the American Baseball Coaches Association conference in January.
In baseball, the only pants should be gray and white.
agreed… and the jerseys should be gray or white, too.
That is one of the reasons I’m a Yankees fan.
And the grey jersey should match the grey pants (it’s sad that isn’t a given…)
No way. Little color is good. Not all the time, but different pants are nice.
Is this a common thing for baseball? I figured for the larger D1 schools one brand is responsible for all the school’s varsity sports programs.
I was thinking the same thing, I know it used to be a different story though. I guess UVa isn’t high enough on Nike’s priorities for them to care. The only other instance I can think of these days is BC football being Adidas and everything else is New Balance. That has a logical reason since NB doesn’t do American football.
Yeah, it probably used to be more common than it is now.
Actually the all orange isn’t too bad for college baseball! Although I probably wouldn’t like it in MLB, it is better than most CCs and especially those with black or navy pants!
An all-black or navy uniform wouldn’t be too bad, if properly accessorized (light colored socks and/or sleeves).
The swash under the script Virginia is too thick, or the lowercase “g” is too small. Either way, the swash can’t pass through the loop. So their solution was… interrupt the awash? That alone makes the whole design questionable, even more than my antipathy for UVA.
Good uniforms, it looks like they sweated the details, and it’s nice to see a peripheral athletic outfitter.
One question. Are their hats still new era? I think they’re the only major 5 school that wears new era on field hats.
Nice uniforms but also surprising that the swoosh is not providing them. I like the white space in the g loop of the wordmark.
Jamie – COMM ’00 here – like these a lot, and the all orange ones are a cool feature. The thing that’s been grinding my gears/chapping my a$$ the last few years since the re-brand has been the terrible number font. They look awful on the football jerseys. Perhaps slightly better on the baseball unis, but they need to kill that font – it looks like a combo of a stencil and dimples. Just doesn’t go on a uniform, IMHO. Love to see your contributions – thanks for this! Wahoowa!
Double alum (COL 91 and GRAD 93) and big fan of UVA baseball Unis. I love bold orange and blue, but these are not doing it for me.
Like MJ, the script is not quite right.
I’m not sure about the orange and blue pinstripes. They look decent in the hype advertisement but in the photo the blue totally washes.
I’d love for them to use the script (a fixed one, of course) on the basketball unis. And as sad as it is to part with CTB, maybe this will lead to an alternate or two on the b-ball court.
Also, thoughts on a road gray? Seems odd we don’t have one – I know we have in the past. Something a little off about not wearing gray pants on the road.
