Utah HC Unis Debut, More Hockey, Football, & More

Posted in:

Good morning, everyone. Now that we’re a week into the National Hockey League season, we’ve had a chance to see the new Utah Hockey Club’s uniforms in some meaningful action. As we like to say here at Uni Watch, “I’ll need to see these on the field/court/ice in order to render a judgment.” Well, it’s been two games with both unis being worn, so let’s do some rendering.

The Hockey Club played its first game at home on Tuesday against the Chicago Blackhawks, in what was a nice uni matchup.

It’s very fitting that they opened against Chicago, because I get a real Chicago Bruisers vibe from Utah’s unis…and that is a very good thing. I love the black and light blue color scheme, almost as much as I love navy and light blue. Both the blue and the white stripes really pop here, as do the white letters and numbers.

The inaugural season patch can be seen on both shoulders, and a secondary Utah logo is on both sides of the helmets.

You can see the helmet logo better here, and this is a look at it on the white helmet.

Two days later, Utah wore their whites with black breezers as they traveled east to take on Phil’s New York Islanders. Again, another nice matchup.

I’m sure a lot of you noticed this a lot earlier, but I didn’t realize until yesterday that the striping was different. On the black unis the stripes are separated, but on the whites there’s no separation.

I’m not sure which version I like better. All I know is, along with the 2-0 start, Utah fans have a lot to cheer about…including these simple but very effective unis.

If/when they get a name and a new logo, I hope they put it on the white jersey. Leave the black uni just the way it is.

Yes, There’s Still Hockey In Arizona…

…just not the NHL kind anymore. The Arizona State Sun Devils, who shared their arena with the former Arizona Coyotes for the past two seasons, had an interesting promotion this week. Yesterday I was surfing the web when I came across this post:

Of course that got my interest, as that instantly reminded me of last Winter’s Ice Football from Germany.

Oh, yes. It’s real, and it’s spectacular.

Turns out ASU was promoting its Friday doubleheader of hockey and football.

The hockey team started things off against Michigan, in a battle of helmets that take the designs from the football teams.

Here’s a better look at the helmets, along with a nice Arizona-shaped alternate captain’s patch:

The patch on the other side is for the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, which the Sun Devils joined a few months ago.

After that game, the football team hosted the Utah Utes, in yet another mono y mono matchup.

At least the pants weren’t plain!

Terry might have more to say about this game during Sunday Morning Uni Watch. The only thing I’ll add is I wish the logo on the helmet matched the one on the pants.

Another Goal Line Discovery

Last month’s pieces about Gs on the goal lines (found here, and here) led me to find something else. Fellow SMUW Crew member Wade Heidt reminded me that Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium used to have double zeros at the goal lines instead of Gs.

I remember seeing those during the 1984 Grey Cup between Winnipeg and Hamilton.

I thought I had seen those somewhere else before, and it turns out I did. Another green and gold city, Green Bay, used to use 00s in the early 60s.

Those stills were taken from this highlight film of a 1962 Lions/Packers contest. I think I’d prefer to see 00s on jerseys instead of on the field, but it’s a nice little quirk that I’m glad a couple of teams did. Anyone know of other teams that did this?

Going Out With A Kick…And Some Long Volleyball Rallies

When I can, I like to end with a walk-off field goal, but today I’m going to give you a kick of a different sort. Check out this piece of footwork during last night’s Purdue/Nebraska volleyball match!

Here’s another rally, on a nice looking gray court.

And I’ll take this lengthy one over an ace any day!

Plays like that are why I consider indoor volleyball to be one of my four major sports. Hope you enjoyed them as well.

That Will Do It For Now

My dad turns 90 years old today, and my niece turns 40, so there will be lots of celebrating. Mom’s dad was born 120 years ago today, so hopefully they’re celebrating in Heaven. May you have a good day as well. Take care, and I’ll see you tomorrow for Sunday Morning Uni Watch.

Unpopular Opinion but I wouldn’t mind seeing the Utah HC keep those uniforms with their new logo being added as a shoulder patch.

Yup I’m right there with you. These are very nice. I can tell they won’t though, because NHL Store isn’t selling the sweaters like they are for other teams, nor are they selling the locker room gear. Just cheap generic t-shirts, hoodies and hats.

The inconsistent striping on Utah’s jersey is driving me nuts. Why did they do that? Either one looks fine, but why? The simpler arrangement on the white jersey looks cleaner. Aside from that, these look really sharp.

Just speculating. The Los Angeles Kings introduced new uniforms this season and likely have them in the works for a couple of years. Can’t help but notice the Utah white jerseys having the similar striping design to the new Kings white uniform. Except the trim stripes around the black are light blue instead of silver. Both new looks this year and not many teams switched uniforms this season. Removed the top stripe so that it is not the exact same template as the Kings white jersey?

Something else to note about the Utah uniforms. They have home and road gloves. Notice the white wrist roll on the gloves when they wear their white uniforms.

It is not common for NHL teams to have different gloves at home and on the road. The Golden Knights used to do this until they changed to gold uniforms as their primary home look.

Come to think of it, the Ducks also started doing the different home and road gloves with their new uniforms this season.

Vegas did it when they had the gray home uniforms. Black gloves at home white on road. Now they wear white with the Gold homes and on the road. The alt still uses the black gloves.

Wade – In regards to the 00 yard line:
While I was looking for any additional old CFL stadiums with a 00 goal line (with no luck), I stumbled onto some other stadium history I though was interesting .

Empire Stadium, at the time home stadium of the BC Lions of the CFL, had a temporary ski jump constructed for a 3 day event back in 1958.

It’s one of my favorite obscure sports rules. My mind was blown when I learned it. Hardly ever gets mentioned. I imagine PE teachers don’t want kids just kicking the ball all day, which is probably what I’d have done.

Utah looks pretty good but they look a little too much like the Sharks from a distance. Not sure I like that. I also happen to be a Sharks fan haha.

Utah looks decent. NHL has the best uniforms by a mile. Way ahead of NBA, NFL and MLB. SLC is also a much better fit for a hockey team than anywhere in Arizona. Utah will be a huge success for the league. Great move.

Utah’s home jerseys for game 1 had a different shoulder patch on the right shoulder to commemorate the first official game. The patch read inaugural game versus inaugural season on the left shoulder patch. The game patch also had the date underneath it.
