Carolina Panthers to Debut New Uniform Combination This Sunday

Pretty big news out of Carolina last night, when the Panthers announced they’ll be wearing a brand new uniform combo for their game this Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

First they announced the helmet:

The Panthers first got black helmets in 2022, after the NFL lifted its “one shell” rule. They were worn once that year, against the Falcons, and the team went mono-black. Carolina won that game, 25-15. They would wear the black helmets just once again in 2023, also against the Falcons, and again, the Panthers won, 9-7. The Panthers won only 2 games total in 2023, so they won half their games in black helmets.

It does make a bit of sense then, that they’d break out the black helmets again this weekend against the Falcons.

Now here’s where it gets interesting. The Panthers had been playing a bit fast and loose with the “alternate” rules by pairing their black helmets with their black jerseys, which had been designated as their “primary” jersey. Technically, they’re not supposed to combine the alternate helmet with either the primary home or road jersey, but the NFL has allowed similar exceptions (for example, the Bengals with their “white tiger” helmet being paired with their road jersey). So the NFL probably wouldn’t crack down on the team for wearing the mono-black this year.

But a funny thing happened over the summer. The team tweeted out a teaser that showed the black helmet being paired with the Process Blue alternate jersey (and black pants and socks):

So the plan, it seems, was to pair the black helmet with the alternate jersey for this season (or at least for one game). And indeed, the black helmets were being worn at practice yesterday.

And finally, there was this interview with Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard, who confirmed the pairing of the black hats and blue tops:

Hubbard said, “Yeah. I mean if you ask me the black helmets are the best in the league. And our blue jerseys? I love wearing the blue jerseys. I think the last time we did that was Tampa last year [actually it was Atlanta — PH] and I thought we looked fly. So it was good.”

The only question is what pants the team will pair with the blue jersey. The teaser video from June showed them wearing black pants and hosiery, but I’m hearing they’ll be wearing white pants. A player was seen in the practice video wearing white pants with black socks:

As of the writing of this article, the GUD still has the pants as “TBA”.

Here are a couple stills from the video above showing the black/blue/black/black combo.

Although I’d like to see it on the field, I don’t think I’m a fan of that look — at least not with the black socks. But I do think I might like the blue jersey paired with the white pants and blue socks (so picture this with a black helmet) or the black socks.

The Panthers also have silver/gray pants and Process Blue pants, though I’m not sure either of those combos would work any better. But much of it would come down to the hosiery. If the Panthers went with blue pants, it might not look bad with black socks. Silver pants with black socks or blue socks might work, too.

What do you think of the new black helmet/blue jersey combo? Which pants and hosiery would you like to see the Panthers pair with the bucket and shirt?

I like the idea of blue-black-blue. Blue socks would be best…

My issue here is that the blue stripes on the helmet appear to be a different hue to the jersey. It could very well be the lighting, but it’s not a great start.

From what I read this morning, it will be white pants! I have lived in Western North Carolina all my life and followed the Panthers since there beginning! Personally, I love the process blue jersey but it only looks good with a silver hat and pants. The black helmet looks bland and is hard to see. If it must be worn it should only be with an all black uniform. The black jersey looks much better with silver helmet and pants. Black and blue is okay for a flannel shirt but not with a football or baseball uniform

Before it existed, always thought black/blue/black combo would be a good primary uniform option for the Panthers if they ever redesigned their uniforms. With alternate helmets now and their addition of black pants to their ensemble, we could see it even without the Panthers redesigning their uniforms.

I like it! Much better than the mono-black! Would have looked much better against a team that didn’t wear a black helmet also. I figure the Falcons will go mono-white against this IF Carolina does decide to wear black pants.

Would look good with the white pants and blue socks if the blue jersey didn’t have the silver lining on the stripes. There’s no other silver found anywhere else on the uniform

Black helmet, blue jersey, black pants, and blue socks is about to be the best uniform in the NFL. I said what I said.

(They do need to just put the regular logo decal on the black lids though, instead of an all-blue version that doesn’t match anything else on their uniform)

It would benefit from a splash of silver…maybe the facemask?
    Those stripes really gotta go.

It will be better if they go with the white pants. The black pants will be too much.

If they are in fact going with black/blue/black this will be their best look yet. I like it better with black socks as well although some stripes would be a nice touch on the socks. My only complaint will be please FFS move the helmet decal forward and down.

I want to like this combo but it still doesn’t feel like a perfect fit for them. I like silver helmet/blue jersey/ silver pants best but they rarely wear that anymore. And I would love to see them pair their white jerseys with silver pants but they’ve only done that once a very long time ago.

Going to agree that black/blue/black is a good combo, but as others have said, the blue on the helmet doesn’t seem to match the jersey’s color. Also the black helmet is just a bit problematic the way the logo is rendered on there, since the logo is black it blends in too much with the black helmet. I think that was probably the desired effect when designed the assuming it was part of a mono black uniform, so it sort of worked if that was the route you were going. But with the blue jerseys (which looks better than mono black) the logo needs to stand out more.
My preference would still be for a Carolina blue helmet, carolina blue jersey, and white pants. With blue/white/blue for road games.

I’m not a fan of the black helmet at all whatsoever. I’d prefer they’d stick with the classic silver helmet, black jerseys and silver/gray pants, black socks or do silver helmet, white jersey, white pants, “process” blue socks. Like they used to wear in the good ol’ days.

After the Rams and Commanders, the Panthers have the worst uniforms in the league. Looks like a early 2000’s Arena League uniform.

Did you see what Houston wore last week? Have you seen the Cardinals bloodclot uni? I don’t think the Rams or Commanders come anywhere close to being that bad. Well, maybe the Commanders BFBS alts are that bad, but the burgundy over gold that they wore last week is Top 10.

The Titans have them all beat be a wide margin…The Panthers aren’t even the worst on the NFC South (looking at you, Atlanta-throwbacks aside, of course).
    YMMV

I like the blue jersey and I’m on board with the Panthers being one of 3 teams who can get away with having black as one of their primary colors (Ravens and Raiders being the other two. Okay, and maybe the Steelers), but that helmet is HIDEOUS.

As much as I love Pat Patriot, Bucco Bruce, and the old-school Broncos helmet, lifting the one shell rule has been a net negative from an aesthetic standpoint. Too many alt helmets for the sake of having alt helmets.

They’re the Panthers, so they should have a black helmet option. The logo is a little too hard to see, though. I see people here saying that they’re wearing them with white pants instead of black, which is unfortunate. This helmet seems like it’s begging to be matched with black pants.

I love it, I’m not a monochrome fan at all, so I’m in favor of the blue on black look for the Panthers. I’m looking forward to the Lions black on blue later in the season. The Bengals new black on orange combo looked great too.

Helmet needs outlines of the logo and the stripes in silver and/or white. The rest could be blue, black, blue socks. White pants? OK, but with blue socks. I like the jersey and the socks to match.
