Oklahoma State Cowboys Unveil New Orange Basketball Uniforms (UPDATED)

With the NCAA Basketball season less than a month away, the Oklahoma State University Cowboys have unveiled a new orange uniform for the 2024-25 season.

While not explicitly stated, the new orange uniform appears to be the first in a series, at least based on this tweet:

There is no hype video (yet) — but the team did release four still photos of the uniform in what appears to be a video shoot, so it’s quite possible that a video is in the works.

Let’s take a look:

The jerseys and pants are orange. Around the collar and arm slots, there are a thin white and thick black stripes. Side panels with a thin white/thick black/thin white stripe extend down the sides of the jersey. The front of the jersey features “OKLAHOMA” in vertically arched lettering above the number and “STATE” in a horizontal line below the number. Those are both rendered in black.

Jersey numbers are white, with a thin black outline.

The shorts have a black waistband with a “Pistol Pete” logo at the center. The same striping pattern of thin white/thick black/thin white found on the jersey side panel extends down the sides of the pants. “COWBOYS” in white lettering run down the shorts on the thick black stripe.

There are no rear views of the uniform, but we can probably surmise that NOB will be in black lettering (similar to the OKLAHOMA/STATE seen on the front), and it’s expected the rear numbers will also be white with thin black outline.

These uniforms are somewhat similar to the previous look, but with some obvious differences.

Whereas the old uniforms feature a solid black stripe around the neck and no stripes around the arm openings, the new jersey has the black/white striping pattern. The previous set read “COWBOYS” above the number in a bespoke font, while the new ones split OKLAHOMA STATE into two lines, with one above and one below the number. Finally, numbers on the old uniforms were black with a white outline, the new jerseys have the opposite style.

The new shorts are much more detailed, than the old, which were basically solid orange. The new shorts have the added white/black/white stripe down the sides as well as the black waistband.

Interestingly, the new men’s jersey is similar to that worn by the OSU Women’s Team last season. The women’s jersey features the same style “OKLAHOMA STATE” placement and arching. The numbers and collar striping are basically the same as the prior men’s jersey.

Since this appears to be just the first new uniform for 2024-25, it follows that the team will introduce new black and white uniforms as well. OSU went to the former design back in 2017-18.

UPDATE: As I suspected, the photos did come from a video shoot, which the team has now released:

__________

I’m pretty happy with the new uniforms. I like the new collar and sleeve striping, but I’m a bit less enthused with the side panels. I definitely prefer the white number outlined in black to the previous set that had a black number outlined in white. And in general I’d prefer the wordmark to be entirely above the number, with one as long as OKLAHOMA, splitting them above and below the number — particularly when “OKLAHOMA” is vertically arched — makes it more balanced.

The OSU Men’s Basketball season tips off on November 4, against Green Bay.

Your thoughts?

This is an interesting continuation of the recent Texas Tech unveiling, where there was discussion about above-below vs. double-stack lettering. There is definitely a design challenge with the difference in length between “Oklahoma” and “State.” UNC also has one five-letter word and one eight-letter word and came up with these beauties, but I wonder whether it would look as good with the long word coming first. link

Well done. Loving the return to simplicity with these and Ball State’s unis which were recently covered here. Simple striping with the right contrast, nice typefaces (and ones with staying power…not gimmicky ones), as well as big bold colors is just…so refreshing! Let’s keep it up!!

Big improvement. Always happy when I see teams moving away from the mono-color unis while at the same time not going crazy with gimmicky design elements. They struck the right balance here, IMO.

I married into a family of Oklahoma State fans, and my wife’s BIL is a graduate of “Poke State,” so the interest in these new unis extends beyond my personal UW readings.
And the wife loves them, as she says, “Much better than those ugly black ones.” I strongly agree — not to keep her happy; I had my opinion decided before I showed her — especially with the vertically arched state name in the cowboy-style font used in many OSU unis, including some of the football uni numbers. The white numbers trimmed in black, along with the multicolored collar and side panels, create an esthetically pleasing kit, and the small Pistol Pete on the shorts waistband is a nice, subtle inclusion. As some of the locals might say, “They done good in Stillwater!”

    1. Great look. Nothing ‘edgy’ which is why it’s great. They have a great color combo so let it do the work.
    2. Old-timey Warriors fan here, but why make us bend our necks 90 degrees to read the shorts lettering? Why is the ‘TNOL’ (Team Name On Leg) always horizontal these days? Trying to start this as a Uni Watch pet peeve.

“Why is the ‘TNOL’ (Team Name On Leg) always horizontal these days?”

Because it would be hard to fit vertically ;)

I’m guessing you mean why is it written at 90° (so “COWBOYS” appears upright if the player is seated), as opposed to it being:

    C
    O
    W
    B
    O
    Y
    S

Good question. I noticed that, but didn’t really think much of it but yeah…it might look better if spelled out that way, as opposed to how they have it now.

What a massive upgrade. The previous uni looked like it was from a cheap rec league. Hopefully we are starting to see the pendulum swing away from the ultra-minimalist unis that have been fairly prevalent in NCAABB for the past few years back towards classic looks like the new ones here.

Good basketball uniforms. Good color, good contrast and striping. Good letters and numbers. They look like Oklahoma State, and there’s nothing crazy or embarrassing that you’d have to explain to grandpa. The outgoing oranges look like practice gear, so this is a nice improvement.

I don’t think I’ll ever like down-the-leg writing, so I would ditch that part. I’d also like to see that OSU logo somewhere, probably above the knee like before.

Ditch the lettering on the shorts, add the OSU monogram on the left leg and stop messing with it for the next 10 seasons. Big upgrade. Love the matching side panels on jersey and shorts, only basketball should be allowed to have uniforms with side panels.
