Toronto Raptors Unveil New “Classic” Edition Purple Throwback

This morning, the Toronto Raptors announced, via video (what else?) their new “Classic” edition uniforms for the 2024-25 season. These are basically the same uniforms worn from 1999 through 2006. They’re nicknamed “Purple Fever” and will serve as an homage to that set.

While the team has provided no still shots (at least as of yet), they did release what appear to be black and white photos of the new uniforms (as a teaser, the tweet preceded the video):

I was able to make a few screen grabs, which are below. Fortunately, since this is a throwback, the video showed us plenty of highlights of the original uniforms in action.

The uniforms feature Toronto’s iconic old-school purple color with red trim and black and grey on each side of the jersey. This uniform is part of Toronto’s 30th season celebration as the organization honors three decades in the NBA. The Raptors have unveiled a new commemorative logo for the year featuring the No. 30 with a Raptors claw mark in the logo.

Here is a look at the road jersey upon which the Classic Throwback is based:

You’ll note the graphic says “1999-2003” but the team actually wore the purple roadie until 2006.

While fans will no doubt love the throwback, they are more eagerly awaiting the official unveiling of the team’s new City Edition uniform, which features a modified Raptors logo doing a Vince Carter dunk (Carter will have his number retired by the Raptors this season).

While the team has not officially released the City Edition yet, sources have confirmed its legitimacy.

And the uniform Vince Carter was wearing when he had that epic All Star Game dunk? You guessed it: the new “Classic” uni:

I’ve said before I’m not a huge fan of many of the late 1990s/early 2000s NBA uniforms, which were rife with sublimation, but I actually did like the one that the Raps are reintroducing this year. It was wild (different color front/back) but it was one of those “so bad it’s good” type things. It’s like they threw red, purple, black, white and gray at a wall and this is how it came out. I’m actually looking forward to seeing them on the court again!

Your thoughts?

I love these! Their current logos pale in comparison to when they used an actual raptor, and the purple is also great. What’s the fun in naming your team after a dinosaur if you’re just going to use that clawed basketball logo?

So much better than the garbage units the team wears currently. With some tweaks they should make these permanent! Red and purple is an INCREDIBLY unique color scheme in sports but a sharp one so it deserves the love.

    “Make it permanent”

Seriously, thanks in large part to the unique color scheme, these are their best look. Give me this uni and the white version and the Vince Carter city alt and call it done.

Graphic said 1999-2003, because in 2003 they switched from “Toronto” to “Raptors” on away jersey and that version was using from 2003 til 2006. It’s not a mistake

The graphic says until 2004 because they removed the pants number for the last few years.

Just so people know that it’s technically correct

They’re a little gaudy and a little silly, and maybe not exactly to my taste, but you know what? They’re colorful, they’re distinctive, and they own the look.

I’ll allow it. More power to them.

Yes, yes, yes. From the distressed pinstripe to the dunking dinosaur of the city alt, this is what they should wear instead of yet another red, black and white uniform. Leave that to the Bulls and the Blazers.
