The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are hosting their annual “Irish Wear Green” game against Louisville this Saturday, but until yesterday, it wasn’t certain whether the team would actually don their “lucky” green jerseys to match the fans in the stands. The team has now confirmed it.
Interestingly, however, there was no hype video nor any photos of the uniform (or green jersey) the team will actually wear. However, based on an image from the EA Sports college football game, we have an idea:
https://t.co/afnffHfarI believes Notre Dame's green uniforms for the Louisville game on Saturday will look like the ones in this screen shot from @EASPORTSCollege…

In an environment where almost every special uniform is accompanied by a robust social media announcement — hype videos seem espeically popular these days — it’s unusual for the Irish to keep their cards close to the vest. The website Blue & Gold, which monitors such things, believes the team will wear a green jersey top and white pants with their golden domes. It’s expected the combo will look like that shown above.
This will mark the third time (in three years) under Head Coach Marcus Freeman that the Irish will don green tops. They’re 1-1 in them during his tenure. But overall the team has a very good winning percentage while wearing them.
They’ve not only worn them in lieu of their “regular” blue tops over the years, but they’ve also sported them during their Shamrock Series games (you can click on that to see each special uniform the Irish wore for said Series).
Here are a few historical looks at the team going gold/green/gold (in different shades of gold!), which is my personal preference — I don’t like it when the team goes mono-green, although that’s rare.
While still unconfirmed, it’s expected the Irish will take the field wearing this uniform vs. Louisville:
I know some of you like Notre Dame (well, if you like Notre Dame) in their regular gold/blue/gold, but I’ve always liked it when they changed things up and busted out the green jerseys. I’d prefer Saturday’s combo to be gold/green/gold — the Irish should only wear gold pants — but I’ll reserve final judgment until I see them on the field.
Your thoughts?
This is one of the few alternate jerseys I enthusiastically support. Despite no longer looking like ND, it makes sense with their brand and has a solid history to it. I don’t think it is something they need to do every year. I think it would just be cool to break this out for a big game. Not even so much one that was circled on the schedule at the beginning of the year. But rather during the season, where it feels right and they need something a little extra special, break out the special green jersey.
This all coming from someone who is emphatically anti-ND.
I love the green jerseys, but yeah, completely agree on the gold pants. That’s a must.
This ND fan thinks this combo is ✨️crisp✨️. I’m all for it.
I consistently like uni combos that are metallic helmet / color jersey / white pants. The Buccaneers, 49ers, and Cowboys have each done this a couple of times in the last few years. As long as the jersey numbers are white to match the pants, I think it makes for a look that’s cohesive but distinctive. (It helps that those 3 NFL teams all had stripes on their pants. ND with striped pants is just weird, though. I thought the Shamrock Series jerseys with stripes that they wore against Wisconsin at Soldier Field looked like ND fan jerseys that come in kids’ sizes for $20 at Walmart.)
I do hope the Irish wear green socks tomorrow.
Personally, I believe Norte Dame should break out the green jersey for one of the big bowl games.
Respectfully, Notre Dame doesn’t go to big bowl games.
Really weird
Why are uniform designers the WORST at designing uniforms? Come on, gold/green/GOLD! Sheesh! However, I digress, and like Phil, I’ll reserve my overall opinion until they hit the field. I’d rather see the occasional green jerseys than not. The Irish flag does have green in it.
I personally don’t like white pants without stripes, though Penn State is one obvious exception. Other than that, they remind me of my 5th grade practice pants. Just sayin…
ND should NEVER wear anything but gold pants with the gold lids. This is coming from a ND hater.
NOT a fan of ND, but I do appreciate the fact that they have (almost) always had one of the most instantly recognizable unis in college sports. That said, it should be carved in stone that they MUST ALWAYS wear gold pants ( an exception will be allowed for the S.S. unis).
Gold pants look so much better with this.
I’m not so sure about this shade of green. It looks a little too soft and pastel to me, but it’s hard to tell with a limited number of photographs.
I’d rather see a “sharper” Kelly, with a little less blue, a little more yellow, and less of the soft pastel, something closer to the first and third historical photographs. The second photo is a nice shade, but I think it’s too dark for this purpose.
Navy trim would really help these, especially on the numbers.
The gold helmet that Brady Quinn is wearing is perfect. It’s 1000x better than the fool’s gold-looking helmet they wear now.
YES.
No. They can’t make it that way anymore. The helmets are made of different materials, and the paints used in the past aren’t legal anymore. Over time, the process resulted in tan helmets. At least now, the helmets are gold.
ND is the cautionary tale for why I don’t want my USC Trojans to ever have alternate uniforms. It’s a slippery slope. ND was probably the original team to have an alternate uniform, when they’d very rarely break out the green jerseys, usually against my Trojans. I loved this tradition, and I hate to admit it but when the changed from blue to green at halftime against USC, it was very cool. But now they have these gawd-awful alternates every year, and they can’t even get the green jersey correct, putting it with white pants. They look like Oregon, and that’s no compliment.
Gold Pants in a decent OLD GOLD shade are a Must. This version, the Irish are – Channeling Baylor from the 1960s and 1970s ….
How can you be the “Irish” and have no green elements in your uniform? I love Notre Dame in green jerseys!!! This is an alternate I can fully stand behind.
As an ND guy, I actually liked the white pants. Our gold pants look better under the lights, but this was a day game so I liked changing up the look. As my wife pointed out, though, Louisville wearing white pants took away from the contrast/effect. (Side note: I was so proud of her for having an opinion about uni aesthetics.)
