The Iowa State Cyclones men’s basketball team have unveiled a new gold alternate uniform for the 2024-25. Iowa State’s official colors cardinal and gold, although if you’ve followed the football team in the recent past, you’d be forgiven if you thought their colors were cardinal and black.
Be that as it may, the basketball team has a pretty deep history with gold uniforms. They released the following video, which shows several previous versions of their gold alternates, followed by their newest look for 2024-25.

Unfortunately the team hasn’t released any still photos, but I was able to make several screen grabs of decent quality, so we’ll use those to look at the new uniforms.
The jersey (and pants) have a retro feel, and the script the team is using is almost identical to that which was found on the team’s football helmets from 1987-1994.
As you can see, the jersey is gold, and pretty minimalist. Cardinal stripes adorn the neck and arm openings, with “Cyclones” in a retro script across the chest. Two cardinal stripes run down the sides of the jersey.
You can see how the jersey font is very similar to that used on the football helmets.
In fact, it happened only quickly, but the video actually featured a repro helmet to emphasize the connection:
The back of the jersey is similarly plain, featuring NOB in thin cardinal lettering, and a uniform number which is also solid cardinal.
The shorts are also gold with a cardinal waistband, two cardinal stripes (matching up with the jersey) run down the sides and are at the hems as well.
Besides the maker’s mark that appears on the left hip, the script “Cyclones” logo appears at the base of the right short.
And here’s a comparison between the Cyclones most recent gold alternate and their new one, where you can note the differences.
According to the team, the new alternate will be rotated in with their traditional Cardinal red and white uniforms.
I love it when a team uses an actual school color for an alternate uniform, rather than going the trendy BFBS or AFAS/GFGS look. I actually didn’t mind their previous set (although I wasn’t a fan of the diagonally tiled striping pattern which ran down the sides). So this is definitely an upgrade. I’m looking forward to seeing these uniforms on the court!
Your thoughts?
Gorgeous!
Would make a nice chassis for a baseball uniform…red base layer, gold vest – the script is stellar.
Those look EXCELLENT!!!
Love this uniform, and I hope other teams use stuff like this as a basis for retro-style uniforms. Definitely looks like something you’d see in the 70’s and 80’s.
glad they got rid of that logo on chest alt uni. those are generally terrible because of the narrow width on top that doesn’t extend past the width of the numerals and looks unbalanced.
2 Sweeeet !
cool way to honor Average Joe’s Gym’s 2004 American Dodgeball Association of America’s championship run
Glad I wasn’t the only one who was reminded of Dodgeball will these unis!
full Ronald McDonald.
Yeah, it’s a little too fast-food for me, but concession sales should be good for those games, at least. My mind wanted to read it as “Calzones.” This should look pretty good on the court, though.
I wonder if it would look better if the chest script was arched a little bit, and the front number was a little lower. A tiny (TINY) bit of black or dark navy in the trim might help things, but you have to be really careful what you wish for there.
I think I’d like it better if it had the “I-State” logo on the pant leg instead of the second “Cyclones.”
I’m not much of a basketball fan but this set would make me watch a game if I found them on TV. What a great upgrade. I hope their football team has taken notice.
As an aside, NBC News tonight had a story about Jimmy Lonetti and his glove repair shop. I hope there’s a followup here tomorrow.
script is awesome
So why would an Iowa State college program release this? If my kid was going there and that program raised our tuition by hundreds of dollars just for an extra jersey and not even have my kid who I paid hundreds of dollars more and not even get to see my kid on national television.. well. At least we are providing for the rich.
What?

Am I the only one wondering why a team that plays indoors, held a uniform reveal outdoors?
Yes
Great uniform, would love to wear it.
