Golden State Warriors Unveil New “Classic” Edition Uniform

Posted in:

Good morning, Uni Watchers, and a Happy Humpday to all!

The Golden State Warriors have officially unveiled their new “Classic” edition uniform for the 2024-25 season. This one wasn’t as much of a surprise as it could have been, because along with the massive “City” edition leak from last week, a couple non-City jerseys were also leaked, including the Warriors.

The team announced the new uniforms in a video voiced-over by former Warrior Chris Mullin, who was drafted by the team and played for them from 1985 through 1997.

The new uniform pays tribute to the Warriors’ Philadelphia roots, where the team spent 16 years and won two NBA Championships.

Here’s a closer look at the jersey:

The jerseys are white and feature red letters with blue blockshadow, as well as red and yellow piping around the collar and sleeves. “WARRIORS” is in vertically arched lettering. Numbers are in a red block font, and also feature the blue blockshadow.

Although the uniform is based on one worn by the Philadelphia Warriors, it’s actually one never specifically worn by that team. And the Golden State Warriors have not put a specific year (or years) on which the new uniform is based. It most closely resembles the uniform worn from 1954-57, although it also bears a resemblance to the 1961-62 version.

As you can see, both of those jerseys featured “PHILA” in vertically arched lettering across the chest. The 1954-57 had a solid red waistband, while 1961-62 featured red, blue and gold stripes.

The pants the Warriors will be wearing for the classic edition have a red waistband, and blue/red/gold/red/blue stripes down the sides and at the hem.

The rear of the jersey will have NOB in blue, radially arched lettering, with numbers in the same style as the front*:

* The above image was actually from last week’s massive jersey leak. Somewhat inexplicably, the team did not provide any images of the back of the jersey — so I am expecting it will not look exactly like this, but rather will have truncated striping, as is common to all Nike on-court jerseys.

Additional jersey detail shows that the numbers will have perforations:

The team provided a few “storytelling” slides as well:

If you look at that last slide, justaposed with the black and white photo of Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain, there is a photo of Steph Curry wearing a similar uniform to this new one, only in blue. That uniform is their 2021-22 “Origins” design, which celebrated their 75th anniversary. The Knicks, Celtics and Warriors were the only teams to receive “Origins” uniforms. Here’s how that blue version looked in action:

The Philadelphia Warriors, founded in 1946 as one of the NBA’s charter members, captured a league title in their inaugural season of 1946-47 and again in the 1955-56 season.

“Our new Classic Edition Uniform is a testament to the rich legacy of the Warriors and a nod to the history that shapes our identity as a team,” said Warriors Senior Vice President of Marketing Amanda Chin.

__________
I like this uniform a lot, and it’s understandable the team didn’t do a straight throwback (since that would have had “PHILA” as a wordmark). I’m glad neither they nor the NBA are calling it a “throwback” since it’s not, but instead describe it as “Inspired by the Philadelphia Warriors, this season’s jersey design harkens back to 1946 when the team was one of the NBA’s charter members.” However, the design clearly doesn’t look like the 1946-47 uniform, as that featured gold letters and numbers, with blue blockshadow, and had blue shorts. I wish they would have actually used that uniform as their “inspiration,” even if they swapped in “WARRIORS” for “PHILA.”

The team has not yet announced how many times, nor on which dates, they will wear the uniforms.

Your thoughts?

Guess the Game from the Scoreboard

Guess The Game…

…From The Scoreboard

Today’s scoreboard comes from Jacob Kitman.

The premise of the game (GTGFTS) is simple: I’ll post a scoreboard and you guys simply identify the game depicted. In the past, I don’t know if I’ve ever completely stumped you (some are easier than others).

Here’s the Scoreboard. In the comments below, try to identify the game (date and location, as well as final score). If anything noteworthy occurred during the game, please add that in (and if you were AT the game, well bonus points for you!):

Please continue sending these in! You’re welcome to send me any scoreboard photos (with answers please), and I’ll keep running them.

Guess the Game from the Uniform

Based on the suggestion of long-time reader/contributor Jimmy Corcoran, we’ve introduced a new “game” on Uni Watch, which is similar to the popular “Guess the Game from the Scoreboard” (GTGFTS), only this one asked readers to identify the game based on the uniforms worn by teams.

Like GTGFTS, readers will be asked to guess the date, location and final score of the game from the clues provided in the photo. Sometimes the game should be somewhat easy to ascertain, while in other instances, it might be quite difficult. There will usually be a visual clue (something odd or unique to one or both of the uniforms) that will make a positive identification of one and only one game possible. Other times, there may be something significant about the game in question, like the last time a particular uniform was ever worn (one of Jimmy’s original suggestions). It’s up to YOU to figure out the game and date.

Today’s GTGFTU comes from Marcellus Jacobs.

Good luck and please post your guess/answer in the comments below.

And finally...

…that’ll do it for the early lede. I will have several additional articles, including HUGE Boston Red Sox uni news, as well as Anthony’s Ticker, to follow. So make sure to keep checking back often!

Everyone have a great Wednesday, and I’ll catch everyone back here in the morning.

Peace,

PH

I find it very odd that there is no blue anywhere on the jersey but the wordmark, and no yellow anywhere else on the jersey but the piping. Same thing happened with the blue version of this uni.

While it’s not 46/47 look which would interesting on the home jerseys, the Warriors did win a title in this style in 55/56 so it’s not crazy to throwback to these.

Using all three primary colors in the same uniform is massively underdone across sports, love this look.

Beautiful…I love it when uniforms pay homage to franchise history-I realize sonetimez relocation ‘hurts’, but celebrating the past is a net-positive in my book.

GTGFTS – December 5, 1976 Final @Vikings 20 Packers 9. Love love love that sloppy field at the Met!

Man, I have said it before and I will say it again: The interrupted/truncated back piping on the back of these Nike templates is just dreadful.

    Just, why Nike?

In keeping with the old PHILA abbreviated word mark they should have gone with WARRI or GOLDE. Thank you, and I’ll see myself out.

My thoughts on the Warriors new uniforms is a very nice looking uniform. But these uniform reveals are getting kind of boring, I know it’s what we do here but every day a different team has a new uniform. I miss the days of when a new uniform reveal was exciting and fresh.

Ah yes, those classic 1960s uniforms that had giant Nike and Rakuten logos plastered all over them…

Is there a solution to GtG from the uni? It looks like the visitors are the Hurricanes and the Isle wore the fisherman in both visits during the 2022-23 season.
