Good morning, everyone. For the third time this college football season, a visiting team has spoiled its opponent’s whiteout plans. Two weeks ago, Phil told us about Eastern Kentucky saying no to Western Kentucky’s whiteout request. That same week, Cal said no to Auburn.
Auburn originally planned to wear white today against Cal, per sources.
NCAA rules state the road team dictates jersey color. SEC rules say the home team decides – conference games only, of course.
Cal originally agreed, but then read the rule book & said they’d wear white. pic.twitter.com/Re6oD5god0

This week, the Colorado Buffaloes wanted to have a whiteout of their own.

Their Thursday X post was followed by this Baylor Bears post yesterday:

Apparently the Buffs didn’t have the express written consent of the Bears, because the NCAA rule says, “The visiting team shall wear white jerseys; however, the home team may wear white jerseys if the teams have agreed in writing before the season.”
Baylor better hope this doesn’t come back to bite them. Western Kentucky ended up shutting out Eastern Kentucky 31-0, in a game that made the 5&1 list.
The score might have been the same had the Colonels agreed to wear dark jerseys, but I’m sure the Toppers were playing with a little extra motivation that day.
Cal/Auburn also made that same list. The Tigers didn’t get their revenge, losing 21-14, but we all got a great matchup.
Will we get a better looking game again? I do like Baylor’s all-whites better than Colorado’s. If the Buffs go back to their Week One look, though…
…that would mean yet another chess match of a game. Or will they mix and match their colors? We’ll find out tonight.

Remember Gs On The Goal Line?
Last night I was hoping to see my alma mater, Cuyahoga Falls High School, play some football. On the way, I ran over something in the road, and a few minutes later the tire pressure indicator on the truck I was borrowing came on. So I turned around and headed home while I still had air in the tire. More on that later. I did get to see some of the game on YouTube, and I didn’t miss much. Another shutout loss, the third in five straight home games to open the season. At least they won the other two. Anyway, the real reasons I wanted to go were to hear the marching band, and to see if Clifford Stadium still had Gs on the goal lines. They did, but not where you think they’d be…if you remember them.
According to the Gridiron Uniform Database, the last Super Bowl to have them was XXIII in Miami.
Most NFL teams phased out their Gs in the late 80s or early 90s, but the Steelers had them until the final game at Three Rivers Stadium in 2000. In college, the Georgia Bulldogs still have them, and they use the same oval G that’s on their helmets and at midfield.
East Carolina still has Gs as well (thanks, Brian Weingartz!), and so does UCLA.
Cuyahoga Falls, on the other hand, puts theirs IN the end zone, AND on the sidelines. I *never* saw that before…have you?
These were pictures I took last Summer after I got to kick on the field. And in last night’s video they were in the same place. I don’t know when they started this or why. When I went to school there, they used a simpler non-serif stencil with no Gs, just numbers. If I can make it to the final home game on October 18th, I hope I can find someone there to tell me the story behind this very quirky field design.
Does your school (high school or college) still have Gs? Let us know in the comments.

Another CFL Walkoff FG?
There were two games last night in the Canadian Football League. The second one featured a really nice green vs. red game as Saskatchewan faced Calgary.
No minimalism there! Might be too many frills for some of you, but I was very pleased with this matchup.
The first game was the classic Hamilton/Toronto rivalry. The Tiger-Cats wore their “The Hammer” alternates, which I would like a lot more if the gray…er, grey was lighter.
The Argonauts went mono-light blue for a new look on an old rivalry.
And the reason I showed the first game last is because…you guessed it…we’re walking it off with another game-winning field goal!

Rose High School in Greenville, NC and East Carolina University in Greenville, NC still have Gs on the goal line. I help paint the field each week at Rose High School. I’ve always thought all of us here should have the G on the field for Greenville.
G for Greenville… I like it!
And I covered an ECU game back in the Jeff Blake era. Glad to see they still have the Gs.

Jim, on a related note, do you remember when they first started putting the arrows next to the yard line numbers pointing toward the nearest end zone? As I recall, the Rose Bowl used to have arrows on each side of the 50 – a few other fields had that same feature, but the Rose Bowl was the last one to do away with it, many years ago.
Actually, my high school has arrows on either side of the 50s, but on no other numbers.
I believe the first was Arrowhead Stadium when it opened in 1972. They had little arrows, as opposed to the ones you see today.

The first Super Bowl to have them was XII. Same type of arrows as KC.

My AC blower went out this week, so I had to borrow my mom’s old minivan. The way the cloth ceiling is sagging, I had to wear a cap every time I drove it.
Auburn’s planned white at home was squashed by Cal two weeks ago

Thanks!
Post now updated with your info.
Did Colorado mention (anywhere) that the asked Baylor and were refused? WKU said the announced their whiteout in July (although they apparently never cleared it in writing with EKU).
I’m just curious whether Colorado just assumed they could go white at home and expected Baylor to play along or if they followed proper protocol and were then re-Buff’ed (see what I did there?)
WKU/EKU is obviously a big rivalry game, but the last time Baylor and Colorado met was in 2010 when both were members of the Big XII Conference. So there is a bit of a rivalry between the two, but not as big as some. I’m wondering if Baylor pulled an EKU here or if Colorado was simply expecting the Bears to play along.
I have yet to come across anything from the university. They haven’t even updated their uni choice on X, so maybe they’re going to surprise us.
A lot of what I read was reporters and commenters wondering if they’re going to wear white anyway. I don’t think they’re that dumb.
Speaking of marking the goal line, I remember “00”. It was a thing in Edmonton at Commonwealth Stadium while they still had grass less than 20 years ago. Edmonton should put the “00” back on the goal line. It was a longstanding signature detail about their field.

I appreciate that we have gone back to the future in the CFL. The Roughriders in simply green and white uniforms. The Stampeders in simply red and white. Current new uniform designs but a nod to the old days way back.
Both teams have featured black and silver as trim colours for many years. True many of the designs with these trim colours did look good.
Some not as great. Like this Saskatchewan at Calgary game 21 years ago. Both teams in black pants! With triangular pant striping. Glad we’ve evolved.

A couple of teams had 00 in the late 60s, but I can’t remember where I saw the video. I think it was Buffalo and Green Bay.
I know the Bills also had a G bisected by the goal line.
link
“a G bisected by the goal line” is how I think it should have always been done, like the C on the midfield stripe in Canada. Although I’ll accept 00 as long as Jim Otto or Ken Burrough are allowed to play.
If teams went back to one home and one road uniform this white out BS wouldn’t be an issue. #getoffmylawn
The buffs were never going to wear white. The white out is for the fans only. They did it last year against USC. Fans wore white, team wore grey and black.
If they weren’t planning to wear white, why did they tweet a photo of a player dressed in white?
link
At least the Buffs have like 6 other alternate looks they can wear.
I’m pretty sure Colorado just wore all-whites recently in a road game against their in-state rivals. They had that same “flatirons” angular rock pattern that isn’t really visible, but I think they had black cages in that one.
It’s a shame since their standard gold helmet with the black bison looks great, but now they always run away from it in favor of either all-white or all-black.
CU and CSU both have such disappointing sets, considering the design elements that are available to them.
In 55 years of watching football, I can’t remember ever noticing a G on the field. Interesting! Thanks
CU is wearing their gorgeous classic look!
Gold black gold with classic shoulder stripes!
Praise God baby

I love this site… I’ve been catching up on old 49ers Superbowl games over the last couple of weeks and thought “WTF” is that G on the goalline? … Sounds like something UniWatch might write about. And by the end of the week…
Funny to be reading about this today. On Saturday night I took my dad to a D3 game at Geneva College, in Beaver Falls, Pa. The goal lines were marked with stylized “G’s” same as the school’s wordmark. Bonus: the field is shared by Beaver Falls H.S., which produced Joe Namath.
That’s awesome!
I may have to do a followup piece next weekend and include this. Thanks!
