Memphis Grizzlies Unveil Vancouver Throwbacks

After announcing their new jersey patch partner advertiser late yesterday, the Memphis Grizzlies today gave fans of their original Vancouver uniforms some great news: they’re paying tribute to their 30th anniversary season by donning the team’s white Vancouver Grizzlies-era uniforms.

The new Classic Edition uniform features the team’s original primary logo and team colors of turquoise, bronze, red and black in one of the more memorable uniform looks in NBA history.

The team announced this afternoon they’ll wear the throwback Vancouver Grizzlies uniforms for select games during the 2024-25 season.

Let’s go to the video…

That provides some really good footage of the original uniforms but unfortunately doubles as an ad for their new “jersey partner.” And it doesn’t give us too many looks at the “new” uniforms. The team only provided a few stills.

The team will also have a special court to be used when the team wears the throwbacks.

Here are a couple looks at the Classic uniform (which is actually pretty true to the original):

Memphis celebrated its 25th season in 2019-20 by brining back the teal Vancouver jerseys while also giving the court a throwback look. This will be the first time Grizzlies players have worn the white jersey in an NBA game since 2000.

According to the team

The Grizzlies’ original primary logo directly showcased the animal itself while the secondary marks – “Clawball” and “G-Swipe” – represented its ferocity, both of which were repped on the team’s home and away uniforms.

The primary team colors of turquoise, bronze, red and black were utilized throughout the brand system and instantly combined to create one of the most iconic home and away uniform sets in the league.

This season, we will be showcasing the home white Vancouver Grizzlies uniforms. The mix of primary team colors when combined with the bold logos emblazoned on the chest and leg, plus the native Canadian Pacific Northwest pattern outlining the uniform, work together to form one of the more memorable uniforms in NBA history.

The team will debut their new (Classic) uniforms on their Opening Night, which is October 26th.

__________

I was not a fan of these (or the teal road) uniforms when they originally debuted — this was the height of crazy 90s uniform design with lots of sublimation, but as the years progressed, I guess absence has made the heart grow fonder. I kinda like them now. It’s not a uniform I want to see 40 games a season, but for a few select games, it’s nice to see the design make a reappearance.

What do you guys think?

I love the jersey, the logos, the court… I with though that a team in Memphis represents Memphis. I wish they grabbed everything from the old days but slightly tweaked Vancouver to be Memphis.

    Wow…

Another photo of an athlete with his mouth open.

That is almost as bad as videos showing athletes walking somewhere in their street clothes.

Both have run their course and need to be dropped.

I could not agree more! The constant barrage of these staged gaping-maw photos is disgusting and tired. To me, this lame pose does not convey “passion”; it is fake and boring. If I wanted to look down anyone’s throat, I would have become a dentist.

Almost as ubiquitous as the football player with untucked undershirt and both hands pulling down on the middle of the shoulder pads, as if they are REALLY in

In response to a couple of comments. Omitting or tweaking Vancouver on the logo would be disrespectful. This original white jersey was only worn by the Vancouver team. Don’t mess with the throwback. Can’t forget about the origin of the team and where it all started.

Pretty sure the “Canadian Pacific Northwest” is closer to the Yukon, since Vancouver is in the SOUTHwest of British Columbia. Of course the Grizzlies do play in the Southwest Division, so what do they know about geography in Memphis?!?

Love the Haida trim but hatehatehate everything else about these fussy, weird-colored uniforms. The bear on the shorts looks like roadkill. Just no.

Bought a teal Greg Anthony Grizzlies replica years ago at Big Lots but donated it to Goodwill. Kind of regretting it now.

This is insulting. Shame on them or any team wearing a uniform of a club that was taken from another city. I think it’s a disgrace. Whalers, Expos, and any others too. It’s just a cash grab by a team that doesn’t deserve it.

Ahem. The Grizzlies live on in Vancouver via pop culture based on recent documentaries and fashion. It’s tough to see another city sport it but it helps keep the city in mind. With talk of Seattle getting the SuperSonics back, maybe we can a team again down the road but not anytime soon.

I don’t like these jerseys. In a time where Memphis is struggling we need to keep it memphis. Memphis vs everybody. I will be wearing my blue Zach Randolph jersey that says “Memphis” on it to the games. Love the new grizzly logo much better.

I would like to see them go back to this color scheme. I absolutely hate the court design they have now and the unis as well. It’s just so bland. I’m a Bulls fan. But, I live in the Memphis “market”, so I get to watch a bunch of Grizz games. I actually dated a gal about 15 years ago that had season tickets and got to attend a lot of games. Even that uni design then was pretty good. Loved the yellow accents.

I really like this design mostly for the pattern they have for all the outlines, and I love the bear logo on the shorts. I’d honestly love to have a pair of the shorts to wear casually.
