Ole Miss to Debut New “Camo” Helmet vs. Oklahoma

The Ole Miss football team have, arguably, some of the best uniforms and helmets in College Football.

Earlier this year, the team unveiled a new white jersey, which they paired with one of their white shells and white pants last weekend. Icy white? Yes, but most folks would admit this was a pretty good looking uniform.

Some argue — including the team itself — they have the “best” helmets in the game. I’m not sure I 100% agree with that assertion, but here’s how Ole Miss feels:

If that sorta “which of these helmets doesn’t belong” look in the upper right photo looks a bit out of place, you’re not wrong. That was actually the first helmet in NCAA football with an ad. That helmet, which debuted in 2022, was a new camouflage design created by the hunting brand Realtree (whose founder and CEO, Bill Jordan, is an Ole Miss alum and played football for the school in the 1970s). It was, relatively speaking a pretty tiny ad, and not visible except for extreme closeups.

Obviously not satisfied with the numerous helmets they already have, Ole Miss yesterday unveiled another new helmet.

It seems that the “camo” pattern isn’t really camo in the traditional sense of the word, but almost more like a marble finish (for lack of a better descriptor).

It’s got a navy blue base, with areas of lighter blue and white spaced throughout the finish. The classic script “Ole Miss” logo is in red with white outlines, and the helmets will have navy blue cages.

It doesn’t appear to have an ad anywhere either.

The team will debut the new helmets on October 26th, when they face new SEC foe Oklahoma (the Sooners moved from the Big XII to the SEC this season, along with the Texas Longhorns). Since those two teams had been in different conferences, this will be only the second meeting all-time between the Rebels and Sooners. The first matchup between the two programs came in the 1999 Independence Bowl, a game that Ole Miss won 27-25.

This game could end up having big implications in the SEC. Although the game is still a little more than a month away, both Ole Miss and Oklahoma currently are 3-0. Whether either or both will remain undefeated by the time this game is played remains to be seen, but either way it will still be a big game.

And what better way to fire up the players than to give them brand new helmets for the game?

I’ll honestly need to see this in action before I can pass judgment on the helmet itself. I’m generally not a fan of helmets that aren’t a solid color, whether it be two-tone, gradients, or what looks like a marble-ized camo pattern. But I’ll reserve any further judgment until I see them on the field.

Your thoughts?

Yeah, that was my first reaction too.

I’d ask what the point is, but all these silly uniform changes don’t need to have a point anymore.

As an SEC fan/alum (HUNKER DOWN!), I have to say that Ole Miss really aren’t boasting when it comes to their unis. I think they get a bit carried away at times, but the kids and their fans like it, so, okay. Like Phil, I do want to see these on the field.

If I put all of Ole Miss’ uniforms in their own vacuum, I will admit they do have overall a good look. If I saw them on the TV I’d think “that’s a good looking uniform”. But they have one of my biggest pet peeves with uniforms, and that is using two shades of the same color separately. Either have a navy helmet/jersey set or do the powder blue set, but don’t have one of both. It’s the same with BYU, with them having essentially two sets of home/road uniforms, one with a dark blue, one with a light. Or how the LA Chargers had three different blue jerseys, with each blue being its own thing. It makes the overall uniform set feel kinda disjointed, like “which color is ACTUALLY your color”. I’m fine with having multiple shades of a color, but they all have to be used together. Like how the Seattle Kraken have two blues on their jerseys.

Not that anyone asked my opinion, but they lean just a bit too much into the light (powder?) blue. It was cute when they had the lighter blue helmets with “normal” jerseys and pants, but now their whole brand seems to revolve around light blue and white. I think they feel right at home in navy, red, and gray.

Living in Northeast Mississippi and surrounded by so many Ole Miss fans, the powder blue fad has gotten out of hand. It’s everywhere! And God forbid you make fun of them for it because “it’s part of our history”. Yeah, you got a bunch of helmets that were powder blue instead of dark navy by mistake. Your coach decided to just keep them. I still don’t get it and never will.

Not a fan. I am absolutely pissing into the wind on this, but I dislike when teams codify their nickname as a part of their uniform. Everybody celebrates the “Ole Miss” script on the helmets: I want to see an “M”.

Hate the Ole Miss White helmets.
Hate the Ole Miss “Camo” helmets.
The light Blue helmets are passable, but not necessary.
Hate all “script” team names or logos on helmets. Zero identity or imagination.
Ole Miss generally has good uniforms, but desperately needs a good helmet logo. They have never really replaced the old Colonel Reb they got rid of 30 years ago.
At his point, a good Red Block “M” trimmed in White would be an improvement.
and get rid of the incongruent pants striping.
Small details make A+ uniforms look C+
