BYU Cougars Debuting 1996 Throwbacks This Weekend vs. K-State

The Brigham Young University Cougars are in the midst of celebrating their 100th Season in 2024, and one of the highlights — at least for uniform fans — will happen this Saturday when BYU plays host to Kansas State, and they’ll do so while wearing 1996 throwback uniforms.

The team unveiled the throwback uniforms back in July, and to refresh your memories, here’s what I reported at the time:

The 1996 season was chosen because that squad won their Conference (then the WAC) Championship game over Wyoming, and played in the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day, defeating Kansas State. They’ll reprise those uniforms against K-State this year.

In 1996, BYU wore a royal blue jersey for home games, and a white jersey (often paired with solid blue pants) for road games. Here’s a closer look at the 1996 jersey (yes, it does have sleeve stripes despite the photo, which you can see on the lineman to the very right of the frame):

The sleeve stripes definitely have a Dallas Cowboys vibe, with two thick royal stripes bordered by thinner black stripes. Jersey numbers were royal blue, with black block shadow.

They’ll wear their white helmets with different striping for the K-State game in September. Two royal stripes will top the helmet running from bumper to bumper, and will feature thin black stripes on the inner portions of the royal stripes. Facemasks will be blue.

The classic oval “Y” logo will be on the sides of the helmet.

Here’s a look at the full uniform:

The jersey is pretty “clean,” to use the popular descriptor. As noted, the jersey will have royal blue numbers with black blockshadow on the front.

The only other ornamentation is found on the sleeves, which will have the set of two thin black/thick blue/thin black stripes. Atop the stripes is the “arrow Y” in royal, with a very thin white outline, followed by a a thick black block shadow.

Other than the makers mark, the only other logo on the uniform is found at the base of the collar, which contains the same arrow Y logo found on the sleeves.

This is a big matchup for both teams. BYU and K-State both sit at 3-0, with aspirations of winning the Big XII title, and a trip to the newly revamped College Football Playoff. Not only is this (now) a big rivalry game, it’s the first time since 1977 that the Cougars will play host to the Wildcats.

Not only is it a big game for both teams, it’s going to be one of those “after dark” games, with an 8:30 pm (Mountain Time) start. I’m looking very much forward to this one, and will be anxious to see whether or not it makes Jimmer Vilk’s 5 & 1 list, since both teams will have pretty good looking uniforms (how well they match up against each other remains to be seen).

And to whet your whistle, here’s a little hype video for the throwbacks.

What do you guys think of the throwbacks?

My most controversial opinion is that more football teams should go back to big drop shadows on numbers.

    Agreed.

I also wish more teams would go back to other block style numbers like BYU had in the ‘96 screenshot (diagonal stroke instead of horizontal in the middle of the 2 – not sure why they didn’t try to recreate the font in the throwbacks). I don’t necessarily like it more than the seemingly standardized block numbers but I like the visual variety.

Growing up in the early 2000s, my introduction to the NFL was when the 49ers still had the drop shadow jerseys. When I imagine their jerseys in my mind, that’s what I visualize. To this day their current uniform set, even though they have a longer historical precedence, don’t feel just right.

Yes, but black shadow on royal blue numbers doesn’t have the contrast necessary to make it really work in this case.

Block shadows can look good – sometimes. This is not one of those times. BYU’s royal and white “base” uniform is one of the most beautiful in all of sports. I wish they’d never stray from it.

I was hoping they’d go with the royal version of this jersey, but apparently the athletes voted for the all white

As mentioned previously, BYU did wear this combo in 1996–in their lone loss of the season against Washington.

I get this is a white out game, but I’d prefer royal pants or the royal jersey (that they wore when they beat K-State in the Cotton Bowl).

And yes, that’s Texas Coach Steve Sarkisian above

Of course, echoing the sleeve stripe on the trousers would have been an improvement, if they didn’t want to go blue trousers. But I get that ship has sailed, no stripes is “cleaner” even when that’s not actually better.
