As most of you are likely aware, the New York Jets unveiled a full set of new uniforms for the 2024 NFL season. (The team later announced they will also wear a Super Bowl III throwback later this season.)
So, what better place to showcase a new uniform than on Monday Night Football?
Last season, the Jets opened their season against the Buffalo Bills, which also happened to be a Monday Night Football game. In that game, they debuted white throwback uniforms (from the “Sack Exchange” era) that would form the basis for this year’s new uniforms — and while they won the game, they unfortunately lost QB Aaron Rodgers to injury just four plays into the game.
The team, with Rodgers now back and healthy, got a chance for a MNF redux — both emotionally and uni-wise — as they are the road team tonight against the San Francisco 49ers. With the Niners sporting their gorgeous red jerseys with gold helmets and pants, the Jets could have created a fantastic uniform matchup by re-debuting the white Sack Exchange uniforms (now their primary road uniform). Instead, their 2024 season will kick off with the team wearing green pants and socks.
Ugh. The Jets wore only white pants in the pre-season, going all-white against Washington, and then green over white against the Giants and Panthers.
I don’t mind the green pants (as long as they’re paired with the white jersey) — in fact, I think they actually look pretty good. And it’s nice to see a bit of a twist on the “Sack Exchange” uniforms — the Jets never wore anything but white pants with those uniforms originally. It’s the green socks/leggings that look terrible with the green pants.
It’s not like the Jets haven’t worn green pants with green socks before — but not always. With their recently retired set, they would occasionally wear white socks (even when they went mono-green, they’d still break up the yoga pants look by wearing white socks/leggings).
When the Jets modified their original “Sack Exchange” uniforms for the 1990 season, adding some black accents and a set of green pants, they would always wear white socks with those green pants.
I understand if the Jets don’t want to wear the white pants with the white jerseys for opening night MNF (as they did last year), since they lost their QB for the season in that look. But if they insist on debuting the new green pants tonight, would it be too much to ask to pair them with white socks? I’m not even sure the team has a set of white socks, since every combo (except the BFBS alternate) was shown with green socks during the unveiling.
Tonight’s game could have felt like a classic uni rematch from the 1980s. Instead, the Jets will look like they’re wearing green yoga pants. Couldn’t they have saved this for some other week instead of premiering it on the first Monday Night Football game of the year, with millions of people watching?
Again, I’m all for the Jets wearing green pants with the white jerseys … I just wish they weren’t doing so in green socks.
Legacy White. It’s like regular white, but with more historical context.
Agree, not sure how white can be “legacy”, particularly since, you know, they’ve always had white. At least it’s not “Legacy/Icy/Gotham/Mr. Freeze” white.
I agree, it might be less than desirable, but if the pants have a stripe, it isn’t a total yoga nightmare. Maybe a couple of guys go white socks and we have an infield comparison.
Was just about to post this same comment. With the pants stripe, it’s not as bad. I agree though, white socks/leggings would be better. Paired with the white jersey, I (somewhat) like the green pants.
I think the green/white/green combo looks fine.
Have to agree, the only caveat being that if they had white socks they might then be tempted to wear them with the white pants and white jerseys, which they did in practically every white-jersey game after 2002 (with maybe 2 or 3 exceptions) until the 2019 redesign, although those at least had green stripes.
I for one don’t really understand why football players think same-color pants and socks look good, especially dark-colored pants and socks (i.e., the “yoga pants” look). To me it just makes the legs look smaller/thinner/weaker. Same thing with stripeless pants; stripes make the leg, in motion, look stronger and faster.
The green pants are by far a better look than all-white, IMHO. But I agree on the socks 100%…white would be a much better choice. Socks need to contrast with the pants in just about all cases.
The more I look at both versions of the new unis, the more I think there should be no collar coloring (that is, solid green or white with the jersey). Or, if they insist, it should be much thinner. Looks very outdated to me.
Yeah I agree. The collar looks too thick. At least make it thinner to look more sharp
I got freaked out for a moment when I first saw this and thought they were wearing black pants or something. White pants/tights would have looked better but I’m fine with this
Yeah this doesn’t bother. I was surprised to see the headline. This falls more into the not ideal but not a disaster.
I agree, overreaction by Phil. Not ideal, but not terrible.
I’m with you. It’s bad but I was expecting black pants or worse.
I actually think that the uniform combo ain’t bad. I do think that all uniforms need contrast between the pants and socks. Butttt, the untucked shirt drives me up the wall. Not even for a F’N photo shoot they tuck that M’F in. You’re a damn professional millionaire and elite athlete dress up to it.
His skirt looks sloppy and ridiculous.
Possibly stupid question: is there some functional reasoning for the untucked undershirt trend, or is it just something players think looks cool? Wondering if perhaps there’s something about how NFL jerseys fit that makes players want the undershirt untucked for, perhaps, comfort?
Yep, sadly the mono leotard look is now the norm.
This combo is swell with me.
Calling this a Terrible Uni Combo is a bit misleading. I don’t think sock preferences here ruin the uniform at all. It’s a very good NYJets look! Love the stripes and even kinda dig the collar – it works.
I don’t think I could call this “terrible” based on what we’re seeing from other teams, but I agree that contrasting socks would be a big improvement.
I don’t understand why teams (or designers) are so dead-set against contrasting the socks in these uniforms. It’s so ubiquitous, it’s like some sort of unwritten rule. To me, every single one of those uniforms would look way better with contrasting socks. I’m not saying every team has to do it, but I keep seeing all of these teams debut NEW DRIP, and it’s almost always mono-mono-mono, white/white/white/white, black/black/black/black. They keep acting like its F R E S H. It isn’t. It hasn’t been fresh for quite some time.
We keep being told that “this is what Gen Z wants,” but is it really what they want, or is it what they’re being *told* that they want? Is the astro-turfing so complete that there’s no longer a meaningful distinction?
It’s fascinating that in response to an ever-expanding range of possibilities, we’ve become even more myopic, parochial, and hierarchical.
I don’t mind this uni-combo either. The Jets could add white stripes to the sock, and I think that would help break up the mono green for those objecting to the look.
Looks great.
Jersey B gotta Jersey B!
White-over-white…call it clean, call it icy, call it what you will…is a terrific road look for the Jets throughout their uniform history. Ugh – there goes my optimism.
PS: They shouldn’t even own green pants.
Wait a min, This guy is wearing low tops for shoes. There is white on his ankle. Do you guys mean that the white sock should replace some of the green on his lower leg? Looks like to me he has on some track pants over white socks..
Yoga pants for football is gaiye
You keep saying “socks.” They’re not. They’re solid-colored tights which more and more team insist on wearing.
Yes, I know. I am using it in the sense of “lower leg stylings” — typing socks/compression gear/spandex/tights/whatever gets tiring.
If you have a better “catchall” than socks, I’m all ears!
Hosery …. : )
If I had to choose between green socks and plain white socks, I choose green. I’ve seen way too much of white socks lately. I’m sick of them. If they did white socks do them with some green stripes on them. That’d be a massive improvement. Plain white socks? No thanks.
Looks fine to me. Hate the Jets, but that new green helmet is fantastic, just striking.
i mean… they could’ve gone BFBS pants….
Hideous even for The Jets. And then there’s the whole man-diaper untucked T thing.
Why don’t they make an untucked T that matches whatever pants/stripes they are wearing?
As I’m too young for the period these are throwbacks too, I would have assumed that green pants with white jerseys are more retro.
White socks with green stripes would look so good with this combo. Feels like a no brainer.
What’s interesting was seeing Wilson and Sauce in baggier uniforms with big sleeves. Fashion is cyclical.
