Did Mike Bibby Accidentally Leak a New Sacramento Kings Uniform?

There was a time, not all that long ago, when NBA teams wore white jerseys at home and dark jerseys on the road. A few teams had alternates they’d break out from time to time.

The Sacramento Kings are one of the oldest franchises in the NBA, having begun their existence as the Rochester Royals (they were actually formed in 1923 as a semi-pro team) and officially joined the NBA (following the merger of the NBL and the Basketball Association of America which created the NBA in 1948). The team moved to Cincinnati in 1957 (becoming the Cincinnati Royals), and in 1972, the team relocated again, becoming the Kansas City–Omaha Kings. That name was shortened to just the Kansas City Kings after three seasons, when they stopped playing games in Nebraska. Finally, the team relocated to Sacramento following the 1984-85 season. So the Kings have a rich uniform history should they ever want to bring back an old uniform as a throwback.

From 2002-2008, here is what the Kings wore for their home and road uniforms:

Mike Bibby played for the Kings when they wore these.

So, if the Kings were ever looking for a throwback uniform (or in NBA parlance, a “Classic”), the 2002-08 uniforms would be a candidate.

Kings legend Mike Bibby may have accidentally leaked a new uniform for the Kings when he posted, and then deleted, an Instagram story showing him in the purple version of the 2002-08 uniforms. But not before Tweeter J r u e (@thatl0calguy) made a screen grab and posted the following to X/twitter:

In case that tweet is deleted or it doesn’t appear full-size, here’s another look at Bibby’s selfie:

So it’s quite possible that the uniform Bibby posed in and posted to Instagram (especially considering he later deleted the post) is indeed a leak of a new (old) Kings uniform.

Will this be a Kings “Classic” edition? It is already known that a total of four teams will receive a Classic Edition Jersey in the 24-25 campaign, with the confirmed teams being the Golden State Warriors and the Memphis Grizzlies. That leaves two teams still to be confirmed. It’s thought that Cleveland will also receive one, and if legit, this would be the fourth team.

Of course it’s entirely possible this now deleted Insta post is simply Bibby repping in his old duds. But that’s also unlikely. The photo also shows the uniform with the “retro” Nike logo, which has been used in the past for Classic uniforms, lending further credence to this being legit.

So what do you guys think? Is it legit? And if so, what do you think of the Kings choice for their “Classic” uniform?

Here’s a look at the entire Kings franchise uniform history. Which uni would you like to see brought back?

Like the Arizona Cardinals, the Sacramento Kings are a would-be legacy franchise that has lost its equity by playing musical chairs around the USA and descending into irrelevance. Bringing back the “SACRAMENTO” uniforms could only help.

All the Kings uni’s from that era should have been rounded up and torched in a large public bonfire.
Those were worse than the crazy Pistons, Grizzlies and Cavs uniforms of that similar era.

Um … am I the only one who notice Sacramento is misspelled in the headline and the second paragraph?

They would do well to go back to this look, frankly. Their current look is a perfect example of Nike’s inability to decide if they want new, old, crazy, traditional, or retro for retro’s sake regardless of whether that retro look is worth rehashing. And often it doesn’t matter what they decide, the finished product looks like it was handled by people who were either rushed, lazy, or don’t have the skills to execute properly.

I second this. But it’ll never happen. We’re a dying breed, you and me. Always takes me a minute to figure out which team is home and which is away when I tune in. Then I forget a few times over the course of the game if the home team is wearing their dark unis. But the NBA doesn’t care – and ultimately it’s not a big deal. Just another sign that the only constant in life is change – especially when it comes the uniforms in professional sports.

It looks like he’s in a “set trailer”, so maybe he’s recording a commercial for the upcoming season, similar to the Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Dan Marino commercial.

If you enjoyed the Kings uniform illustration, there’s a whole lot more where that came from at bballjerseys.com, the invention of the supremely talented Abram Baclagon. He has perfectly illustrated complete uniform histories of every NBA and ABA team and is 4 players into a new feature on the site where he is creating complete, post college, uniforms histories of the Top 75 NBA players, including All-Star unis. Beautiful work!

Given that OKC gave up the history of the Seattle Supersonics in the deal, I’d suggest the Supersonics uniforms go under the “defunct” teams, and the OKC uniforms begin in 2008.

And when the NBA grants Seattle and Las Vegas new franchises (I’m not sure why they’re expanding, they barely have enough quality players as it is to keep anyone watching), the Sonics will rise from the ashes of that crap deal that Howard Schultz signed in 2008.
