Uni Watch 2024 NFL Uniform Preview — NFC East

The NFC East is comprised of the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders. Three of the four teams have pretty big uniform changes — the Giants have added a new multi-year throwback, the Eagles have technically redesigned their uniforms (and will wear a never-before-worn uniform combination for a home game in Brazil), while the Commanders have added a new set of pants that should make a huge difference in their uni-look. Read on for more!

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have no announced uniform changes for 2024.

Interestingly, the Cowboys have benefitted twice from the NFL lifting the one-shell rule for the 2022 season. As such, the team (re)introduced a white helmet, which they had previously worn with their 1960s throwbacks. They’ve worn them on Thanksgiving for the past two seasons.

But the Cowboys also used their newly-allowed white shell to pair with their Color Rush uniform, which itself is a slightly modified 1960s jersey and white pants. They wear different helmet decals on the white helmets: a single star for the throwback which has a gray facemask, and a “double star” for the Color Rush helmet, which has a white cage.

The Cowboys are one of the NFL clubs that publishes a uniform schedule, so we can see what games they’re wearing their primary uniforms, as well as their alternates.

The team will wear its “classic” white jersey/blue pants 11 times this year. They’ll wear their navy jerseys three times. As for the alternates, the “all-white arctics” (as they call them), Dallas will be wear those for two games this season: in Week 4 (September 26th) in a Thursday Night Football game against the Giants, and in Week 14 (December 9th), a Monday Night affair against the Bengals. On Thanksgiving, the Cowboys will wear their throwbacks, also against the Giants. So of the three alternate uniform games, the Cowboys will wear them in both of their games against the Giants.

For the past three seasons, for a single game in each season, the Cowboys have worn a helmet with a red/white/blue stripe. It’s a look they wore during the entire 1976 season, when the nation was celebrating its bicentennial. You can read more about the reintroduction of the red/white/blue striped helmet here.

The team has not said whether it will continue this new tradition for 2024.

Not uniform related — per se — but perhaps the most famous Cheerleaders in the world are the Cowboys Cheerleaders. You can read a very comprehensive history of the cheerleaders uniforms here.

AFAIK, the Cowboys have no plans to redesign their uniforms anytime soon, but that hasn’t stopped folks from wanting them to get new uniforms.

__________

New York Giants

The New York Football Giants are celebrating their 100th season (est. 1925) this year, and as you can see in the photos above, they will be wearing a special 100th Season patch on their uniforms for the season.

Here’s a closer look at the patch, along with a handy-dandy explainer.

Here’s more on that.

But there’s more — a LOT more.

In celebration of their 100th season, the team will wear a franken-uni they’ve nicknamed “Century Red.”

I call it a “franken-uni” because there are actually three specific, different years of uniforms to make up the uniform. According to the team, “It harkens back to the earliest days of the franchise featuring tan pants; red socks with blue and white stripes from the team’s inaugural 1925 season; red jerseys accented with blue from 1933, when the Giants played in the first ever NFL Championship Game; and an iconic winged helmet honoring the 1938 champions as the Giants became a cornerstone in the foundation of the league.”

You can read more on this uniform here.

Here are some additional photos:

The team will debut the Century Red uniform in Week 1 (September 8th), when they play the Minnesota Vikings.

The Giants are another team who have released a uniform schedule.

In order to accommodate their new Century Red uniform, the Giants have now excised their popular Color Rush uniform — which was basically a throwback to their 1980s-90s road uniform (except paired with white socks, instead of blue). They will continue to wear their “Legacy” throwback, which was introduced in 2022 and basically replicates the uniform the Giants wore when they won Super Bowl XXI and XXV.

In more uni news, the Giants have taken the (for them) unprecedented move of unretiring the No. 1 jersey, which will be worn by rookie Malik Nabers. The No. 1 was the first retired jersey number in NFL history, so its significance should not be understated. And speaking of Nabers, he’s not a fan of the new Century Red uniform.

If you’re one of those fans of the (now excised) Giants Color Rush uniform, and aren’t particularly enamored with their current road white uniform, you’re not alone.

__________

Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles have the smallest of uniform changes for 2024. If you look at the images above, the green jersey is from a 2023 game (they didn’t wear green jerseys in the preseason) while the white jersey is from 2024. Can you spot the difference (besides the color)?

The team have changed the small wordmark above the number and below the collar. Here’s a side-by-side:

Here’s more information on that. Believe it or not, this one tiny change actually counts as a “uniform modification,” and it took two years for the wordmark (which the Eagles began using in their endzones in 2022) to appear on the uni. If you read that link, you’ll note that the team removed their previous wordmark from their nose bumpers last season, going blank — and at least as far as the preseason is concerned, they have not replaced it with the new wordmark. So, unless something changes, they’ll have logoless nose bumpers for a second straight season.

While the Eagles have no other announced uniform changes for the 2024 season, they still made plenty of uniform news.

On Friday, September 6, the Eagles and Packers will be facing each other in São Paulo, Brazil — the NFL first-ever game in South America. As you’re probably aware, both the Eagles and Packers use green as their primary color — but there’s a bit of an issue surrounding the use of the color green in the stadium they game will be played. Although there is no issue with either team wearing green (nor for any fans with of either team, despite the rumors), the Eagles — who are the home team — have opted to wear as little green as possible.

And in order to do so, they have created a never-before-worn combination of black helmet, white jersey and black pants.

How are the Eagles able to wear a black helmet (when they currently already have two — their midnight green, and a kelly green they wear with their throwbacks), when the NFL limits teams who have not undergone a uniform redesign to only two alternate helmets this year? Well, that teeny, tiny wordmark change actually counts as a “redesign,” thereby allowing the team to wear a third color shell this season. The team previously wore a black helmet in 2022, the first year when the NFL permitted teams to add a second shell, but mothballed it last season when they introduced their kelly green throwbacks. So they’re simply bringing that helmet out of retirement for the São Paulo game.

And speaking of throwbacks…

Last season, the Eagles introduced a kelly green throwback, which many fans had been wanting them to do for years.

For some unknown reason, there had been some crazy talk the Eagles wouldn’t wear the throwbacks again in 2024, but those rumors were quickly quashed, and the team will wear the kelly throwbacks twice in 2024.

Those will take place in Week 9 (November 3rd) against the Jaguars, and in Week 17 (December 29th) versus the Cowboys.

So, with the throwbacks twice, and the new combination for the São Paulo season opener, the Eagles will have maxed out their alternates for 2024.

Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders will continue to wear the new uniforms introduced in 2022, when they rebranded as the “Commanders,” with their burgundy jerseys remaining primarily used for home games, and the white jerseys for the road. When first introduced, the team seemed to go be preparing to wear an all burgundy and all white, but thankfully they mixed and matched the jerseys and pants often. The team also introduced an all-black uniform, which they wore three times in 2022, and twice last year. In an unusual move, the team wore the all black uniform in their final pre-season game this year, against the Patriots.

They plan to wear the all-black uniform twice in 2024. They’ll don the BFBS kits in Week 8 (October 27th) against the Bears, and again in Week 13 (December 1st) versus the Titans.

But the Commanders also have some VERY welcome uniform news for 2024.

They will be introducing a set of gold pants!

Based on their introduction, it appears the team will wear them with the burgundy jersey (although they may pair them with the white jersey as well). They have not said when nor how often they will be worn, and the team did not wear them during the preseason. Apparently they won’t announce their pants choice until the week of the game. So, we’ll all be in suspense each week hoping the team will break them out.

The offseason news (non-uni variety) wasn’t all great for the Commanders, however. First, back in February, the Commanders’ stadium advertiser terminated its naming rights deal two years early. That was followed by the team’s new coach, Dan Quinn, wearing a bootleg T-shirt showing a feather-clad version of the team’s “W” logo. While he never really cleared up the controversy, he apparently “learned his lesson”. But it wasn’t a great start for a franchise still reeling from the ownership of the since departed Dan Snyder.

But hey, they’re bringing back the gold pants!

Although I wish the Commanders would add stripes to all of their pants, it’s clear that the gold pants will be their best overall option.

I’m almost certain that the lack of stripes (in addition to the general trend of stripeless pants) is so that they can pair it with both the burgundy primary and the black alternate, without some mismatched stripe colors (a burgundy stripe wouldn’t really fit with the almost entirely black and yellow alternate look.

If the Eagles changing their wordmark qualifies as a “uniform change” then they will have to stick to this set for 5 more years I would presume. That’s not a terrible thing because I like the Eagles’ primary uniforms, but—like many people—I prefer Kelly green and wish they would either make their throwbacks their primaries or design a new uniform that focuses more on Kelly green and silver rather than midnight green and black. But sticking with their current unis isn’t a mistake; it’s fine.

Agreed, and I’ll go further: The Commies should adopt every aspect of the team’s pre-WFC visual identity and culture, just with names and logos updated. They should have maintained maximum visual continuity. In part to make it easier and more natural for fans to continue their identification with the team as the name changed, in part because the pre-WFC team was one of the best-looking in NFL history despite the name and logo. Gold pants are a start. Quality stripes would help. Heck, I’m not even all that opposed to the team having a black alternate, provided that it’s worn with gold pants.

I don’t see that really upsetting them since 66% of the blue jersey usage this year is at home, by their own choice.

Man, the Cowboys mismatched color shades have gotten out of hand.
I know some people look at it as a Cowboys “tradition”, but to me, it looks like crap.
They had it right up until around the mid 1970s when the helmet and pants started to “drift apart”.
It’s just slowly gotten worse since then.

They’re so bad. Wish they’d just stick with navy on all of them. Use the silver pants and the white pants with the silver stripe in between as well. Would look great with actually matched unis. Also, please wear the white pants with no silver stripe with the all white unis.

Excellent comments! After about 1975-76, the Cowboys pants started to indeed drift away from the helmet. Would love to see the Cowboys ditch the navy altogether and return to the dark royal that they used to wear, along with the pre-1980 road dark royal jersey that would match the design of the home white. And regarding the home white; the blue is too light; it needs to go back to the dark royal design, and then have the helmet stripes and star go to dark royal as well. Bringing back the socks with the dark royal upper portion and two white stripes would help as well.

I don’t like the throwbacks and never have, because they really aren’t throwbacks. They use NAVY when the original uniforms were royal, and the shoulders and stripes are also very much “off.”

Dallas best white uniform was the Roger Staubach look of the ‘70s. Dark royal blue, matched on numeral, logo, socks and stripes. Metallic blue/silver matching helmet and pants. The jerseys numeral font was iconic and should never have been scrapped. Since then, the blue shade, silver/blue/green mismatched colors have been a disaster. Numeral was changed to generic block—not unique. It is a classic example of how not to change uniforms.

So unless the Eagles get an exemption from the league, they won’t be able to wear their black jerseys this year, right?

Does that Week 1 Eagles uni really count as an alternate? I thought they got an exception for that helmet. So no black jerseys this year?

Dallas always looks good however I don’t like the white pants navy jersey color combination with the silver helmet. The silver pants should only be worn with that jersey. The white pants only look good with the throwback white helmet.

Commies in burgundy over yellow – yippee! They still have the worst alt and road set out there (though the white over burgundy is passable).
I’ll continue to say the Cowboys got it right out of the gate and that their throwback is just plain terrific. Would love to see that more.
May be in the minority but NYGs legacy red and aways are perhaps my faves in this division.
No one has been able to convince me that the shade of the Eagles Braman-era helmet is what it was BITD…it’s too light. Could use an icy bucket one of these days.

After watching the Cowboys wear their navy blue jerseys this past preseason game, I’m coming around to liking it better because their regular white jersey with the light blue metallic pants have too many blue colors. Navy star and stripes on helmet, royal blue numbers and stripes on jersey and pants, shiny metallic light blue pants, is just not good. They need to have silver pants that match the helmet, and maybe just drop the royal blue and use navy instead.

Since this is the division I am most emotionally invested in, I read this one most avidly.
DAL: hate the team, but I can’t imagine them ever changing. Nor should they. I wish Nike would get the metallic textiles right, because their home pants look Carolina blue, not that weird shimmery silver/green/blue it used to be that never matched the helmets. Hell, I love the inconsistencies and all the mismatched colors.
NYG: hate the team, and while I wouldn’t want them all the time, I LOVE the frankenthrowbacks for this season. The logo patch has a lot of thought but it is designed without being overdesigned.
PHI: My Birds. I have gotten used to the midnight green but the better choice is kelly green. One Super Bowl for midnight, but 3 NFL titles in kelly green. And bring back silver pants! Regardless, I HATE the black pants, helmets and jerseys. Green has been the team’s principal color for 90 years. Black became a trim color because of Buddy Ryan, the best coach never to win a playoff game that we ever had. Let it go, people.
WSH: Another BFBS to eliminate, and the return of gold pants works with white or burgundy tops. Of course, Nike is itching to go full monochrome until they look like Commander Mustard (battlefield promotion for the colonel). Stripes would be nice.

Am I crazy, or is nobody else making a big deal about the Cowboys wearing their regular Navy unis at home twice this year? I know they’ve made rumblings for years about this, because navy merch sells better, but White At Home is practically a Cowboys trademark.

Dallas has worn their blue jersey at home on rare occasions recently, and now they are going to continue to force feed blue at home on occasion. As has been frequently commented on this site, Dallas lost some huge games wearing blue where they were the favorites. The blue jersey curse was well known, and the Giants, Eagles and Redskins all wore white at home sometimes just to force Dallas to wear blue. I believe Dallas is wearing blue voluntarily now to break the tradition of the blue jersey curse. They will win most games at home, even wearing blue. As time passes they can try to forget the curse this way.
