UCF Football to Wear Special Helmet Decals Designed by Pediatric Hospital Patients

Good morning, Uni Watchers. Happy Humpday!

Today’s lede will be relatively short, as I’ve been busy with some family matters for the past several days, and the NFL uniform previews are taking far longer than I expected. Later today I’ll have the NFC East and NFC North, and those are CHOCK FULL of uniform and helmet news. So now to today’s shorter lede:

In a time when most of the uni news these days is ads, untucked shirts, biker shorts, “Icy Whites” and things of that nature that tend to get the most clicks, when some good uniform-related news comes around, it’s always nice to report it. Today’s one of those days (or at least this article will be one of those).

The University of Central Florida (UCF) Knights will be putting special helmet decals on this weekend when they take on the Sam Houston Bearkats. UCF is 1-0, and this game should see them leave the field at 2-0. But while the Knights helmets will look a little different, it’s being done as a gesture of goodwill and thanks to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.

Briefly: According to a post on the school’s athletic website, this past spring, UCF players visited Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children to visit with patients. However, there was another reason for the visit: kids were asked to help add designs to the decals that appeared on players’ helmets during the spring game.

At this point I’ll post the video the team shared yesterday. It brings us up to today:

How cool is that. The Knights will take the field this Saturday evening in white helmets, and the “UCF” logo they will be wearing was designed by the kids during the team’s spring visit. Each side of the helmet will feature a differently-colored UCF logo.

The above is a still from the video showing the kids helping some of the Knights’ players design the logos that were first worn in the spring game. Of all those logos created and used in that game, they have selected two to be worn against Sam Houston:

How great are those, by the way? Either one would look good as a full time logo.

I particularly like the one that’s in several shades of blue — if we zoom in (unfortunately there is some glare) we can see that there is a roller coaster motif with some riders in cars at the top left. (You can see the design a bit more clearly in the design stage.)

As noted in the video, the idea to have the kids help create decals came from UCF equipment manager Brad Anderson.

He said, “We got such a good reaction from the spring game with the helmets that we really wanted to put this on the field for an actual game. Not just the spring game, but a game that counts towards us making the College Football Playoff.”

I had to admit I chuckled a bit at what he said next:

“So we started looking at the calendar…”

It almost felt like his next words were going to be “to see which would be a cupcake game,” but he continued with:

“And September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, and we just really wanted to bring as many eyes and as much attention to pediatric cancer awareness as we could and what better way to do that than put the kids’ decals on the helmets.”

With those helmet decals and Sam Houston as an opponent (as of now, UCF is a 22-point favorite), I’d say the odds are pretty good UCF will stay undefeated going into week 3.

The premise of the game (GTGFTS) is simple: I’ll post a scoreboard and you guys simply identify the game depicted. In the past, I don’t know if I’ve ever completely stumped you (some are easier than others).

Guess the Game from the Uniform


Based on the suggestion of long-time reader/contributor Jimmy Corcoran, we’ve introduced a new “game” on Uni Watch, which is similar to the popular “Guess the Game from the Scoreboard” (GTGFTS), only this one asked readers to identify the game based on the uniforms worn by teams.

Like GTGFTS, readers will be asked to guess the date, location and final score of the game from the clues provided in the photo. Sometimes the game should be somewhat easy to ascertain, while in other instances, it might be quite difficult. There will usually be a visual clue (something odd or unique to one or both of the uniforms) that will make a positive identification of one and only one game possible. Other times, there may be something significant about the game in question, like the last time a particular uniform was ever worn (one of Jimmy’s original suggestions). It’s up to YOU to figure out the game and date.

    I Miss The Vet…but not those Saturday Night ‘Specials’.
    However, when turns to the Phils uniforms 1970-present, I say the old maroon looks better than the current red, and the road grays are superior to their home pins and the powder blue.
    The day game cream set may be the best of ‘em all though.

    “How great are those, by the way? Either one would look good as a full time logo.”

    They’re going to be unreadable from any distance.
    Another well-intentioned but not-well-executed idea.

    The Raiders logo is unreadable at any distance too. No one I know has complained. The Brownies don’t even have a logo. You can still read “UCF” (albeit not clearly, but you can make it out).

    As long as the numbers are readable from distance, that’s all that matters.

    Great video, great idea. Loved how the players interacted with the kids. This is what sports are all about.
