Montréal Alouettes Debut 1974 Throwbacks: A Post Game Report

Last week, the Montréal Allouettes unveiled their 1974 throwback uniforms, but unfortunately at the time, they didn’t release any still photos, and their hype video — while showing some glimpses of the throwback — didn’t really show off the throwbacks particularly well.

In that article, contributor/pal/Canadian University Uni Watcher Wade Heidt added his thoughts and it was noted Wade would possibly do a follow-up article once the uniforms had made their on-field debut. They did last night, and Wade is here with his report.

Montreal Alouettes. 1974 uniforms post-game report
by Wade Heidt

On August 22, Phil mentioned we may have a post-game report from me after we see the Montreal Alouettes 1974 throwback on the field. Here it is. The verdict is in. C’est magnifique!

The Alouettes hosted the Edmonton Elks on Sunday night. The game celebrating the 50th anniversary of Montreal’s 1974 Grey Cup win.

Phil covered the uniforms in great detail in the August 22 preview, so we will not review that again, other than some aspects not touched on. This uniform is a modern take of the 1974 uniform worn by the Alouettes. The front and rear bumpers of the helmets were left blank, giving a throwback feel. We discovered the uniform has white socks with stripes. The Alouettes wore similar stripes back in the day but it was later in the decade than 1974. The 1974 team wore blue socks. Plenty of game photos from Sunday can be seen here in the photo gallery.

I really enjoyed seeing this uniform on the field. Appreciated seeing the Als in navy over white at home rather than the usual mono-navy with the primary uniforms. The white shoulder loops going all the way around underneath looks good and shows it can still be done with modern tailoring. The red sleeves pop. The logo on the sleeves works here because of no logo on the sides of the helmet. Having the numbers on the sides of the helmet takes away the need for TV numbers on the jersey. The logo on the front of the helmet didn’t seem as bizarre looking as I thought it might. Here is some game action. Notice broadcaster TSN used the team’s vintage “Delta” logo in the scorebug.

I was disappointed in the uniform decision by the opponents. The Edmonton Elks wore their green pants. It would have made more sense for them to wear their yellow pants, like Edmonton did in the 1974 Grey Cup game. I really wish they would have been mindful of that to give it that throwback feel.

Of note, members of the 1974 Montreal Alouettes were at the game. They wore different Alouettes jerseys. Also ones that were not exact throwbacks to what the team wore in 1974. They were royal blue but these jerseys had TV numbers and the logo on the sleeve.

In summary, a good look for the Alouettes on Sunday. I’m hoping they change their plans and consider wearing it another time. Just like the 1974 Grey Cup, Montreal defeated Edmonton.

    Agree 100% ! Magnifique
New Era did an incredible job, unlike this NFL college crap Nike puts out.

I watched for a quarter or so last night. They looked terrific. I’m still not crazy about the front-of-helmet logo but overall they get an “A” from me.

In Edmonton’s defense, can we really expect the team who lost that Grey Cup to want to recreate the experience?

I had a similar reaction five years ago, when the Vikings played in Kansas City. It was 50 years after the Chiefs beat them handily in Super Bowl IV, so I was hoping Minnesota would wear throwbacks. Not only did they wear their current unis, they went with purple pants. After my initial disappointment, I sort of understood why they didn’t want to play along.

lol try being a Rockies fan, that organization shamelessly celebrates their ‘07 World Series loss so much

Edmonton had been on a 3-game winning streak since starting the season 0-7. Wore green pants in the last road game which was a win. Likely contributed to the decision. Still, the yellow pants are the main pants on the road. I would have liked to see Edmonton walk in there with that strut that a pro team should have. The idea is that it doesn’t matter what we wear, we are going in there and winning.

Thanks Wade…you nailed it..again! I will say I see the Citgo logo on the Al’s…

Thanks Rick! Montreal has a history of interesting nicknames for old logos. The Delta logo. The French Horn logo before it worn pre-1974.

One thing I noticed after doing the rundown. The Alouettes display their old small logos on the pant stripe on their primary uniforms. Noticed they did it as well on the throwbacks. You can see it in the red pant stripe here on the hip.

A bit off topic, but if the Broncos had done something more similar to this with their shoulder stripes (instead of the weird zig zag thing), the new Broncos uniforms would look at least 50 times better.

Well, the problem is, Nike can’t make shoulder stripes like that. Apparently neither can adidas nor UA. But the CFL unis are made by New Era (or at least New Era has their logo on the back); I *wish* Nike would tailor a jersey that would accommodate full loops — they kinda/sorta come close with some of the cuts for the Panthers (link), but that’s not even that good. Not sure why the NE branded jerseys can do it and the big three can’t/won’t.

Spot on observation. If NE can do it, why not the other suppliers? This extends to basketball as well, with those arm cuffs that stop at the back, Nike!

    amazing photo for the lede

a perfect timing of the running back elbow right upwards to take the handoff from the QB

i was fullback in HS so it’s nice to see

but whats with the yellow/off colour ball stripes?

Looks like the CFL is doing what NFL teams do. They’re taking brand new footballs, brushing, shaving-creaming, conditioning and mudding them. The NFL and CFL balls get darker, as do the CFL stripes. link

Great uniform that should be worn more often. And as Wade rightly observed: helmet numbers instead of TV numbers on the jersey is a good alternative.
