Just when you thought Icy Whites was the latest fad that’s outlived any its usefulness, along comes the University of Washington Huskies to reintroduce another BFBS helmet into their 2024 uniform set.
And what is the other newest fad in the unveiling uni-verse these days? Why, the hype video of course.
So when the Huskies decided to unveil their latest BFBS helmet, well, then a hype video it shall be. It’s um… well, it’s interesting:

I’m wouldn’t want to have that audio on repeat.
And as is now the custom apparently, the team didn’t offer any stills — but fortunately, due to the nature of the video, capturing stills was no problem. So lets take a bit of a closer look.
The helmet has a black matte finish, with a metallic purple/gold/purple stripe running from front to back (I’m thinking for better visibility, they should have reversed that pattern). It comes with a gold cage and the front bumper says “DAWGS” in gold lettering.
Each side has a “W” logo in purple, bordered in gold. They have paired this logo with black helmets before (as we’ll shortly see).
The team has not indicated when this will be worn (or how often) nor if it will be paired with an existing uniform or whether a new uniform (or jersey) will be introduced.
This is not the first time the Huskies have done BFBS. In 2013, they wore a BFBS uniform, including a black helmet, against Oregon (it was almost a Spy vs. Spy game).
That helmet was a matte finish with purple/gold stripes that truncated from front to back, and those helmets had the same purple/gold decal as the 2024 BFBS helmet.
In 2014 and 2015, they kept the same blck matte shell but removed the stripes, wearing those helmets with a BFBS uniform.
They kept the same helmet and uniform for a 2016 game against USC, but swapped out the purple/gold decal for a Stars & Stripes decal.
They would dabble with some black accents on their purple helmets in 2018-19 (so BFBS although the helmet wasn’t black), which included a black “W” decal and black facemask.
And once again, in 2020, the team would wear another black helmet. In a game against Arizona, they’d introduce an all-new BFBS uniform to pair with the helmet. The helmet was again matte black with a purple/gold “W” decal. There were no stripes on the helmet.
So that’s their prior history with a black hat. In every case, they’ve worn a black uniform with it, so it’s at least likely (if not certain) that the team will pair the helmet with a BFBS uni. While the new helmet isn’t the first one with stripes, it is the first black helmet with the purple/gold/purple center stripe and a metallic gold cage.

Do you guys have any thoughts on the latest BFBS entry into the college uni scene?
Sigh. This uninspired garbage continues. Can half the teams go WFWS and the other half BFBS just so we can be done with this??
Hey, everyone else is jumping off this bridge. We should too!!!!!!!
Man, I wish the Niners would go with gold face masks.
No
I would never wear gray with gold.
Agreed. The gray face mask doesn’t work with SF at all. I really don’t like gray face mask unless the team has some gray in their color palette.
I give the Colts a pass. They have an old school look, and gray goes well with their color scheme. If the Jets had the Namath look back, they too would get a pass.
Purple and black should never be put together. Sorry Ravens, but it looks like ass.
ass, like purple and black, so good though!
Agreed. I am grateful, however, that those stupid helmet stripes don’t show up.
They should invert the Adidas logo so it looks like a W
Looks like this will be paired with a black jersey. Early post from a pretty reliable retail site. Seems to be a one-off like the rest of the adidas drops this week. Numbers contain the small “holes,” too.

OH gawd that is hideous.
Go Oregon State Beavers.
Exciting. I wonder if other schools will have a black alternate helmet?
Ugly.
My two cents; it’s long past time for the “BFBS” term to be retired. It’s trite and outdated. Athletic programs are quick to follow revenue streams and excitement. Black helmets have been around for ten plus years and this constituent needs to divorce itself from the communist centric narrative that Paul championed. The whole keep things in the 80s and “get off my lawn” is so tired.
I’m pretty sure that’s not what BFBS means. Do some homework and look it up in the Uni Watch glossary please.
Lol is this a troll post?
Wear your black helmets, they match your hearts and your “bottom line first” mentality. Enjoy the travel, the 9AM starts and the weather of the Big10. Here in Seattle, I’ll root for anyone but you, except against the other traitors.
Have you picked a Pac 2 Team yet?
I’m going with the Beavers.
Stripes should have been gold purple gold to make them pop, they should have had the old Huskie in purple outlined in gold. The players will still think it is too ornamental: all black helmet with no further decals will do fine. Maybe an inspirational message on the front bumper: GYAK (Get Your Ass Kicked). Or WDAH (We Dumb As Hell).
