Leo’s World ‘Take Me Out To The Ballgame” Quiz with Answers!

This morning, I posted a Quiz from Leo Strawn — he of “Leo’s World” — and here are the answers.

For those of you who took the quiz (or if you’re just taking it now…NO CHEATING!), how did you do?

Take Me Out To The Ballgame: A Quiz
by Leo Strawn, Jr.

I’m Leo…welcome to my world!

MLB is in the home stretch, so give me some peanuts and Cracker Jack…and an end to the 7 1/2 decade drought with a wire-to-wire division championship AND a World Series win! (Changing the name from “Indians” was supposed to end the “curse”, right?!)

This edition will focus on obscure baseball uniforms and caps, but no photos in the questions this time, just trivia. Like the battle for a playoff spot, this quiz might be a bit tough, so just give it your best and have fun with it, okay?

NOTE: For this quiz, I only included AL and NL clubs because uniform info on teams from other Major Leagues is scant and sometimes unreliable.

Ready…?

__________
1. Which Major League club was the first to wear letters on their caps? (Hint: This was a 19th century NL club that is still in MLB today.)

And A Note From Leo

#9 says: “The Athletics were the first Major League team of the 20th century to feature green on their uniforms and caps way back in 1963 when they were located in Kansas City. Who was the second?

Two UW readers enlightened me on my error. The 1937 Dodgers and the 1910 Phillies both wore green.

I said “20th century” because I knew the Phils wore green for St. Pat’s Day in 1899 and kept those unis for the rest of that season. I was more worried about wording it in such a way that the Reds wasn’t an obvious answer to the question. I only double-checked back to the 1950s, didn’t know about the 1910 Phils, forgot about Dodgers and no one else came to mind. I should have worded that one differently and said something like “second half of the 20th century” since I knew that was correct.

When I’m writing articles and I don’t have solid proof, I don’t hesitate to say “might” or “may”, but I need to make sure I’m more thorough on these quiz questions in the future. That’s one of the things I love about the UW community; no egos, no snarky comments from “experts” who won’t engage in conversation here but rather post on other websites without proof while misrepresenting what I said to make themselves sound important, etc. I’m not like that and I don’t care what people think about me. I’m here because I love sports history (especially uniform-related) and I like to share that passion.

UW regulars are genuine people knowing that uniform accuracy and getting the record straight is more important than saving face. Big thanks to DJ and Patrick for correcting me.

Would be interested to know if anyone knows about any others besides the 1910 Phillies and 1937 Dodgers that I overlooked…?

Cheers!

==========

Thanks Leo! Always enjoy your quizzes!

The Athletics were the first Major League team of the 20th century to feature green on their uniforms and caps way back in 1963 when they were located in Kansas City.

Incorrect. The 1937 Brooklyn Dodgers were first.

    Good call.

I knew there were 19th century uses of green, which is why I worded it the way I did, but I didn’t even think about any from the first half of the 20th century. I should have said modern era or something like that.

    Thanks for correcting me.

This reply might show up twice, but I wanted to thank you for that.

I knew there were 19th century uses of green, which is why I worded it the way I did, but I didn’t consider anyone from the first half of the 20th. I should have said “modern era” or something similar.

Looks like they had green on their sox, too. I would never have seen that one (hard to tell colors sometimes on his graphics) and I was totally unaware of them wearing green in 1910. I said 20th century because the Phils wore green for St. Pat’s Day in 1899 and kept those unis for the season.

No excuse, though, I need to make sure I’m thorough. Should have said “second half of the 20th” since I knew that was correct. Thanks for that info.

    Cheers!

    Thanks!

(P.S., I have a couple replies waiting for moderation, this post and the earlier one. Can you free them?)

Should have gone with gut on the Orioles black over black. I’ve seen it many times(have a replica cap) but I was thinking International League Orioles were the team that wore that.
