Yesterday, the Arizona State University Sun Devils unveiled a new jersey, one of four adidas schools to do so. ICYMI, the others were Texas A&M, Mississippi State, and Kansas. This was actually a Ticker item, but since ASU is a Power 4 school, it deserves a fuller exploration.
Two of those three schools to unveil yesterday (A&M, Miss State) feature a new jersey chassis template, which is characterized by perforated numbers, and new mesh venting systems. The Sun Devils new jersey is also in this new template.
Unlike the other three schools, the Devils did not produce a hype video for the unveil. So let’s take a closer look at the jersey.
As you can see, the jersey is gold and features maroon numbers with a metallic gold outline. Like A&M and Mississippi State, they contain perforations.
Also visible in that shot is the front mesh venting material, which begins at the base of the hem, and in a modified pyramid pattern, terminates mid-jersey. There are also vent holes on the front of the collar.
In addition to the maroon numbers, “ARIZONA STATE” is prominently featured atop the numbers, which, like the numbers, are maroon and outlined in metallic gold. Above the wordmark is the conference logo, a PT*42 (Pat Tillman memorial) patch in black with white letters/number, located at the base of the collar. The makers mark is located on the left chest, also in metallic gold. TV numbers in maroon/metallic gold are atop the shoulders. You can get a better view of the vent holes on the neck here:
With the demise of the PAC-12 after last season, ASU and several other PAC-12 schools have moved into the Big XII conference, so this is our first look at that logo on the Sun Devils. The logo is metallic gold, with a maroon border.
Unfortunately, the school did not provide any shots of the back of the jersey, but based on what we saw with A&M and Miss State, one can expect the rear numbers to have the same vents/colors as the front, and NOB will likely be in block maroon letters on a nameplate.
The uniform was shown paired with a maroon helmet and gold pants (and of course, an untucked undershirt).
As of now, the team has not stated when they will wear the gold top. And while it is being shown with a maroon/gold/gold combo, that won’t necessarily be the combo worn when the team eventually busts them out.
I absolutely love it when ASU wears a gold jersey — their best combo, of course, is their gold/maroon/gold look, but if they go maroon/gold/gold, that’s a close second. When the team goes mono-banana, then that’s a bit too much gold. Hopefully they’ll be permitted to wear these jerseys as road tops against other dark jersey’ed teams. When it’s a gold vs. white matchup (for any team, not just ASU), it’s much less visually appealing. IMO, gold jerseys should count as “light” jerseys and should be worn vs. dark jerseys.
What do you guys think of the new gold jersey?
All 4 of those schools are Power 4 schools and ASU was the only one of the four to unveil a gold jersey.
“Yesterday, the Arizona State University Sun Devils unveiled a new gold jersey, one of four adidas schools to do so.”
I think Dave meant this sentence could be misread as ASU being one of four schools to unveil a new gold jersey.
Yeah, I get what he’s saying now. Changed the sentence to make it more clear.
I don’t like the gold-on-gold look. Those jerseys should go with maroon/gold/maroon uni sets. For better or worse, these are giving me Minnesota Golden Gopher vibes.
I’m going to ask nicely … PLEASE TUCK IN YOUR F*****G UNDERSHIRTS.
What is the distinction between gold and yellow? I know it has been discussed here before, but that looks yellow to me. Gold: Purdue, Vandy, UCF, Colorado, Colorado State, Notre Dame, etc.
I get there is “athletic gold” but it appears the same color as say, the Pittsburgh Steelers, who of course are black and yellow.
Does it really just come down the team calling it gold rather than yellow? Or is there an actual pantone dividing line between them?
Athletic gold is what some folks call yellow. But if the teams themselves say that color is “gold” (as in “athletic gold”) I do too. The Packers colors are green and gold. The Stillers are black and gold. The Oakland A’s are gold (Charlie Finley referred to their colors as Kelly Green, Fort Knox Gold and Wedding Gown White).
Feel free to call it “yellow” if you want, but I won’t be.
First of all, the Steelers’ team colors are black and gold, just like the Pirates and Penguins; there is very specific, historic reason for this as the city has “The Golden Triangle” district there.
The proper term for this “gold” in the uniform industry is Athletic gold, as it’s true color is a yellow-orange; yellow is a rare color in professional and college sports, the Rays (tertiary color), the University of Michigan and the University of Oregon wear it. When you see either football teams play Iowa or Minnesota, compare how their yellow looks to those two opponents gold, you should be able to see the difference.
Lastly, Purdue’s school colors are OLD GOLD & black; Vegas gold doesn’t cut it and looks bland, washed out and faded in electronic and print media.
I think their best look would be maroon/yellow/maroon. With no undershirt of course. A question about the perforated numbers: are they really perforated or is it faux, like a design element? It’s hard to discern from the photos. Either way, it looks really obnoxious.
I have always thought ASU has had one of the most iconic looks in college football. Their gold/maroon/gold look with the “lil devil” on the is a classic. I was even ok when they started with the big pitchfork on the helmets. But, I will agree, the solid gold look is a little too much.
I have always been a fan of Arizona’s traditional white helmet with the “A” on each side. I was sad to see them get away from that a few years ago.
“IMO, gold jerseys should count as “light” jerseys and should be worn vs. dark jerseys.”
I’ve always thought this, too. I hate when a basketball team wears gold on the road against a home team wearing white, but I love when a team wears gold at home against a road time wearing dark colors. Same should apply for football where the matchup is dark color vs. gold, even if most teams wear dark at home. I’d like to see ASU wear gold as a road color.
They’ve got Kansas and BYU at home. Hope they wear these against one of them cuz the gold vs blue would look mighty spicy.
Can they wear these on the road?
Technically, no. They are required (as is every team) to wear white on the road, unless the home team gives permission for them to wear something else. Hopefully they will. And hopefully they’ll allow their home opponents to wear their dark jerseys if they wear the gold shirts at home.
USFL Brahmas Vs Battlehawks worked great with gold vs royal, no reason why it wouldn’t here also.
ASU’s best look was during the Pat Tillman era with Sparky logo and a simple, but fantastic uniform. It’s mostly been downhill since the rebrand to the pitchfork. Add in that designers are getting worse by the year and here we are.
This uniform isn’t bad, but it certainly isn’t something from the ’90s and 2000s era of ASU. Numbers look awful. Metallic outline and border isn’t necessarily needed at all. All the mesh stuff.. Apparel companies are just trying way too hard to be different.
Where can I buy one!?!?!
Well, it simple: no Sparky means no love from me.
I love sparky , tradition
