Good Sunday morning, everyone. Hope you had as nice of a Saturday as I did. I’m tired, but I had a good time with the family and our friends in Washington, DC. When we finally got back to our friends’ house in Maryland, I found out that Antonio Brown’s CTESPN Network has struck again. Looks as if the Colorado Buffaloes should be getting new black jerseys.

The Denver Broncos won’t be the only ones wearing mountains on their sleeves this season, if this is correct. We’ll see when the official unveiling happens, but so far I’m liking what I see.
I also found out last night that Brigham Young University released their entire uniform schedule for the 2024 football season. There was a hype video, which is by no means obligatory. Instead of sitting through that, play the music of your choice as you scroll through this gallery I prepared for you.

On the plus side: only two games with navy blue, neither one in mono-navy…and no BFBS! On the minus side: the classic white helmets are worn in games 4 through 7. That’s it. Games 2 and 12 will have navy helmets, while the other six games will feature the royal helmets. I really like those, but I don’t think they should be worn that much. Oh well, even when BYU doesn’t look exactly like BYU, they’ll still look good this year. Game 9 should be another blue vs. red matchup at Utah, and the Cougars will be in contention for the good side of the 5&1 list quite often.
Now then, come along with me if you wish, as I share my day in the District of Columbia. When we arrived at the Metro station downtown, the first place we went was the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.

Together we visited the first floor, then The Wife and our friends went off to the American Art Museum. The kids and I finished the rest of Natural History, including one of my favorite items, the Peekskill Meteorite. I saw this fall from space with my own eyes as I was driving down I-77 in October of 1992.
There were many impressive displays…

…and a LOT of details. There was so much stuff crammed into the museum that I started to get information overload. I didn’t take a lot of photos because my battery was running low, and I needed to keep one eye on each of the girls, who tended to drift in different directions. I did make sure to take photos at my all-time favorite exhibit in the building: the Bones Hall. Get ready to get your Mid-Century Modern groove on!

If you grew up with the Childcraft books as I did, you’ll feel the same vibe with the colors, the fonts, and the simplicity of these displays.

Very clean, as they say nowadays, and very soothing. I really love the look of the Winter Skate in the Rays case. Get a load of the details in this closeup.

As a lot of you have noticed, Phil and I have been embracing some new concepts these days. We also agree that some things are good just as they are and don’t need to be changed. Well, I’m here to tell you that the Bones Hall is the New York Yankees uniform of museum displays. Don’t ever change it!
Speaking of uniforms, I’m always Uni-Watching…even on vacation. I only saw three jerseys yesterday. One guy was wearing a Polk High Al Bundy number 33 jersey, a kid was wearing a Justin Jefferson Vikings jersey, and a really little kid was wearing a really little circa 2009 Illinois football jersey. I saw a Sixers shirsey and lots of caps from lots of teams, but only one person was wearing a Commanders cap. I didn’t even see him until we got back to the Metro parking lot. This tracks with what some DMV residents have said in the comments about Commanders gear not being seen very often.
The best thing I saw all day was a guy with a Bills Hawaiian shirt.

The standing bison AND a single-bar helmet! I’d wear that, and I’m not even a Bills fan. Anyway, after the museum, we all met up at Carmine’s Italian restaurant.

Great food in huge family-style portions (three meals and an appetizer feed eight people easily), intimate lighting, and Sinatra-style music playing on the speakers. My kind of place.
I’m not sure you are using the page break (-) symbol properly.
It’s kind of jarring to attempt to read with a page break after every paragraph imho
I was instructed to use it before and after photos, so it’s done properly. I just use less words than Paul and Phil so it’s more noticeable.
Interesting. That CU graphic looks like the ones that Antonio Brown posted for the NFL (all of which were proven correct).
Coach Prime shot down a similar looking jersey rumor just a day or so ago. link
CU: a solid look. If I walked into a noisy bar and saw this on TV from across the room, I would know who was playing.
BYU: as above. No issues.
DC: we live 15 minutes from Center City and we take the kids to NYC at least once a year, usually at the holidays. We had forgotten about DC until earlier this summer. It’s a great trip! We had family in both NYC and DC growing up and at one point, 3 of my college roommates lived in DC, so I am not sure why it fell out of the rotation. But we’ll be going back more, and hitting Annapolis on our way down.
Am I the only one who is growing tired of mountain motifs on uniforms
You are not, I can assure you.
Referring to CU. I’d like the mountain sleeves more if they weren’t geometric. I think I’d like solid gold mountains with white snowcaps, but that might not contrast enough? I guess that could be handled with black line between the two colors?
BYU needs to drop the navy uniforms. Pick a shade of blue and stick with it.
Agreed! As do a LOT of teams that went with the 90’s/00’s trend to go with a darker color of what already existed. BYU looks so good with the royal blue/white.
Not sure why royal blue fell out of favor and so many teams switched to navy blue? Maybe had something to do with the popularity of teams going BFBS, and teams thinking navy blue was the next best thing.
Not just blue….. But, even the teams with a really great shade of green went with a darker color. Eagles, Oregon, etc. Would love for the Colts to go back to a lighter shade.
If memory serves, schools which traditionally wore a dark shade of blue (Pitt, BYU) adopted the royal blue to take advantage of color TV, despite it not being an official school color.
Walter….. I don’t think anything says “yeah, that was a bad idea” like this…… Not even Iowa’s horrible redesign with the horizontal stripes across the shoulders.

Visit the Portrait Gallery. It’s a bit out of the way (by Gallery Place, not the Smithsonian) but well worth the metro ride. My favorite museum.
That’s where The Wife and our friends went. They enjoyed it.
The rest of us may join them next year. I always used to lobby for the Air and Space Museum, but it’s not as good as it used to be.
Colorado should have made those mountains look like the Flatirons in Boulder. That would have been a slam dunk of a home run for this uni.
Anyone going to address the fact that Utah ALSO used the mountain graphic on the sleeves?
Absolutely, That’s exactly what I thought when I saw them
Jim,
Great museum pics. Never been to DC but gotta go for those museums.
Also, Weekend Olympics Uni Watch: Puma is making track unis with vertically arched country names. Man that looks good. And France has some warmups with slight concave lettering that’s kinda cool.
My daughter LOVED the Bones Hall — She was 8 when we went last year — and I really loved the throwback vibe there.
Hope you enjoyed your time in The District! My family flew in from the west coast a few weeks ago and also visited the Museum of Natural History. Information overload, indeed!
I don’t remember seeing the exhibits you photographed. But we did see a lot and were pretty exhausted by the time we got to the entrance. Truth be told, the adults were more happy to be out of the sun.
