UAB Football Unveils New Uniforms for 2024 Season

Less than a year after introducing new uniforms for the 2023 season, the UAB Blazers have updated their uniform set for 2024.

There are no major changes to the uniforms for 2024, but there are a few key changes. Also — in what is very unusual these days in terms of college football uni unveilings — there was no accompanying hype video.

Here are the new uniforms for 2024:

Let’s take a look at each uniform individually.

__________

HOME

The home green uniforms are mostly unchanged, but there is a new addition: a green helmet. UAB hasn’t worn a green helmet since 1994. The uniform is shown in mono-green (the team did not indicate if they will mix and match helmets, jerseys and pants).

__________

AWAY

The away uniform is similar to last year’s, but the gold numbers present in 2023 have now been changed to green numbers with a gold outline. This will undoubtedly improve visibility on the field. The uniform is shown in mono-white. The helmet features a green Dragon logo with a single green stripe.

__________

“CHILDREN’S HARBOR”

This specialty uniform has been worn for the past eight seasons. Children’s Harbor provides services and refuge to seriously ill children and their families. This is a light gray uniform (jerseys and pants) and will be paired with the white helmet this season. Numbers are chartreuse, outlined in white. The white helmet will have a chartreuse dragon logo, and stripes are black/white/chartreuse/white/black. As they have previously, UAB players wear the names of Children’s Harbor patients on the back of the jerseys, which are donated at the end of the season. The pants have a chartreuse stripe running down the pants leg, with a truncated white/gray/white modified Northwestern stripe at the top.

__________

“BIRMINGHAM SERIES”

These uniforms are similar to the Children’s Harbor uniforms in that they are also light gray. However, the numbers and wordmarks are white outlined in green. They’ll pair this uniform with the new green helmet. The gray pants have a thick white stripe running down the side, with the word “BLAZERS” running vertically.

__________

“SMILE-A-MILE”

These uniforms are black, and feature chartreuse numbers and wordmarks outlined in white. NOB is reversed (white letters outlined in green). The team will pair this uniform with the white helmet featuring the same colors/striping as the Children’s Harbor helmet. Smile-A-Mile is an organization UAB initially partnered with last season that serves children diagnosed with cancer, providing the patients and their families support and hope from the diagnosis stage to years beyond treatment. Like the Children’s Harbor uniform, the Smile-A-Mile uniforms feature the patients’ names and are donated to them at the end of the season.

__________

HELMETS

As noted above, this year the team features two helmets: green and white. The green helmet is new, and replaces a gold helmet from last season.

__________

Here’s a look at last year’s uniforms compared to this year’s. Note the white uniform has added “collar horns” and the light gray and black uniforms have removed stripes from the sleeve caps.

UAB’s season begins on August 29th of this year.

__________

I’m not especially enamored with UAB’s uniforms — mostly due to the collar horns and apparently bespoke fonts. I also don’t see the need for three alternate uniforms (no matter how worthy the cause). I do like that the team added a green helmet this year and dumped the gold, as well as the improvement to the away jersey by changing the numbers from gold to green.

It seems UA has a new template this year, which is why we’re seeing updates (however small) to the uniforms that schools outfitted by UA are unveiling.

Your thoughts?

I like these. I don’t mind stripes matriculating onto the chest in this style, or the chevrons Virginia Tech had. Also, I usually despise gray jerseys, and I am kind of horrified they’re rolling out two, but this shade of gray isn’t as abrasive as most version are. It’s kind of the lighter shade, like Ohio State used last year.

get rid of the collar horns (and BFBS uni) and these are reasonably solid even though I think there’s not enough gold. a gold stripe on the pants or something would help. I actually kinda really dig the light gray/neon green one as a sometimes uni, it’s different and fun. the black brings nothing interesting enough to justify having a black alt. otherwise my only other critiques are that I don’t like the monochrome outline logo on the main green and white helmets, and that I think a gold helmet is missing from the set.

“Charity-washing” is a thing, best embodied by the old saw, “Good intentions pave the way to Hell.” I addressed this a few weeks ago, when I described a family at a crowded restaurant all wearing “Fuck Cancer” sweatshirts.

Dang. UAB has arguably one of the coolest logos in the history of sport. That dragon is amazing. While it’s strong enough of a mark to work well in single-color applications, it looks best in full color.

The collar and collarbone stripes seem unnecessary. I wonder if they look gaudy because they’re the same color as the UAB and numbers. Maybe if they were low contrast (e.g., green on black, gold on white, etc.), maybe they would seem more sleek.

The white outline on the neon numbers seems unnecessary, too. But hey, I’m just a dad guy from the suburbs, so whatever.

Agreed on the Blaze logo being one of college’s best – especially rendered in full color. I’m not sure why UAB is so scared to lean into the full color aspect. They should be embracing the grit and grime of downtown Birmingham and instead look like a poorly executed gentrified version of themselves. Sad to see. Hope they can remedy this going forward

Is gold not one of their official colors anymore? It seems like all of these are “color rush” style alternates.

Although an upgrade from last year’s set, there’s very little to like here. Except… sometimes we talk about looking for new color combinations on this site. While the execution is not good, I’m intrigued by how well black, white, and chartreuse go together. I think those colors on a different template might really work.

While the jerseys don’t use UA’s new ARMR 37 template, (these use the CompFit3 template introduced in 2022) there will be a sub template for ARMR 37 that looks a little similar to these, with front inserts likely inspired by the Jets’ 2019-2023 jerseys. While the Children’s Harbor jerseys are always amazing, the green and white jerseys need to go back to gold numbers

It’s detestable that the dragon head has been downgraded to green and white over the last couple of years. The full color version with the red and yellow flame is sacred, is visually unique and interesting and should have never been messed with.

Good hell, maybe they should have let the program die. These are not good. Collarbone stripe is ugly

So most teams are going back to basics and they trot out these ugly sins again. Awful.

    I agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

with odd template filler, a gray & black jersey both not being team colors, it feels straight out of 2014

I’m sure the causes are worthy, but these might be the single worst uniform set in FBS football.

It’s odd that the shoulder horns were on every jersey last year except the road one. That was obviously a concern as it’s been remedied by the redesign. Is there some verbiage somewhere about what they’re supposed to represent… because it seems putting a couple of stripes on your shoulder *HAS* to have some supposed significance.

I think they’re meant to represent bull horns… oh wait, this is UAB, not USF!! lol

I’m an Oregon fan, so no stranger to wacky uniforms… but welcome to the uni-wilderness UAB. Woof, these are horrific.
