Uni Watch/University of Hawai’i Design Contest Entries (Part V)

You’ll recall last month the University of Hawai’i and Uni Watch partnered on a contest to design a special edition uniform for the Rainbow Wahine Basketball Program. The winner will receive a cash prize of $1,500, roundtrip airfare for one to Honolulu, and accommodations, for the basketball game slated for January 25, where the winning design will be worn and showcased to hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide.

We received over 100 entries, and we’ll look at some of those today. Although UH Athletics Staff, Players and Administrators will choose one winning design, readers are encouraged to discuss the submissions and to choose their favorite(s).

Over the next two days, I will run all the entries received (and in the order in which they were received).

This is Part V.

I ran through all the designs again and the turtle theme by Marijoy Jatico really stands out at as my favorite. Beautiful design and excellent white space balance! I also really liked the rainbow tie dye by Hiroko Kishimoto and the way Kalei Meyer did the flower lei.

Call me harsh, but I think concepts with apostrophe catastrophes should immediately be disqualified.

Otherwise, I agree with Walter – strong group.

Great group of submissions! I just whoever wins has a submission that flashes some rainbow stripes.

I agree. I think this was the strongest group, top to bottom!

Marijoy’s turtle unis are wonderful! I love the aesthetic, and you can bet that the merch will fly off the shelves. I also liked Dan’s and Logan’s submissions very much.

Yeah, that apostrophe is close to an automatic fail, but under these circumstances, I think it can be forgiven.

One thing is sure, UH will not have an excuse for not having good looking women’s basket uniforms.

    Well done everyone.

Marijoy, Cheyenne and Garret are my top 3 in this batch.

And I’d take Logan’s design copy and paste on every sport at UH.

Lots of great concepts in this batch! My favorites of this group, in order:

    1) Marijoy Jatico – spectacular turtle design!
    2) Garrett Kato – probably the most original of all the designs I’ve seen so far.
    3) Colby Sanders – an overall strong design overcomes the apostrophe catastrophe (barely).

Logan Patterson wins this round. VERY NICE!!

Hiroko Kishimoto is my 2nd choice.

Colby Sanders & Matt Yamane also produced very solid designs.

Near miss on Marijoy Jatico’s submission. IMO, if the front and back of the jersey were reversed and the turtle that is currently on back were left off the jersey altogether (possibly made smaller and put on the shorts instead of the “H” logo), this might have been my favorite. With the side panels only visible on front (as they are now), that would have balanced the simplicity of just the “Hawai’i” wordmark and block number on front. It’s just too busy for my liking. Also, IMHO uniform numbers inside of a bigger design element belong on back, not front. Absolutely stellar design elements, I just question the arrangement.

    Marijoy Jatico!!!!!
I haven’t commented yet because I was waiting for a design to jump out at me… many others are good, Marijoy’s is spectacular!

For the love of all that is holy, Rainbow’s…how have we gotten so bad at understanding the difference between plural and possessive?
