Buccaneers Announce Creamsicle Throwbacks Will Return for 2024

Fans of the Buccaneers creamsicle throwbacks will be happy to learn the team has announced their return for the 2024 season.

As noted in this article posted on the Buccaneers website,

With the Atlanta Falcons in town on October 27, the Bucs will break out their ultra-popular “Creamsicle” uniforms and transform Raymond James Stadium into a homage to their first home, Tampa Stadium.

I didn’t think there was any doubt the team would break out the creamsicles this year, as they specifically introduced a second white shell last year with the express purpose of bringing back the throwback uniforms.

The popular throwbacks were re-introduced last season after the NFL lifted its “one shell” rule the year prior. It was the first time in 10 years the Bucs had worn the throwbacks.

They wore them for one game last season, against the Detroit Lions, and lost 20-6, leading some fans to complain that the team simply doesn’t play well in orange.

They’ll get another chance to reassess their “success” on the field while wearing throwbacks against Atlanta in late October.

I personally LOVE LOVE LOVE the Bucs in orange and white (I’ve never been a fan of the red and pewter, despite the team’s success in those), so I’m pleased with the news. Hopefully the team will perform better than they did last year.

I’d love this uniform, or something very similar, with an updated logo. Maybe something like their current logo just rendered primarily in orange with red?

The white and orange just feels very Tampa, it feels like a Florida team. The red and pewter is fine, but it feels more like a MAC team look. Of all the teams that started updating their colors in the 90s (PHL, SEA, TB, NE, STL/LA, BUF, DEN) I really only think Seattle went in the right direction. And with the Rams and Bills already ditching the darker shades for the original, vibrant colors, hopefully the other teams follow suit.

What I would really like to see is the white jerseys from the infamous inaugural year of 1976 – with the orange-on-red numbers and names. (They wore white the whole regular season and only used the creamsicles in the preseason.) Of course, one of the sharpest unis of all time had to be paired with the worst team of all time, but still, I think it looks better than pewter and red.

I will honestly say, the Bucs pewter/red was possibly the BEST “rebranding” of all time. I think it is a great look. Although, I do love the creamsicles and glad to see them on the field once again.

Totally agree—I’ve always liked the pewter/red unis.

Now, do I think the Bucs should flip the creamsicles to their standard uni and the pewter/red to their alternate? I do.

As a Bucs fan, and growing up in the Tampa area, the day they unveiled the new uniform was like a curse was lifted on the franchise. People dont realize Tampa was a DOLPHINS town, not a Bucs town, until the mid 90s, until the curse of Bucco Bruce was lifted. Dont get me wrong, I love the nostalgia, and I love how they do the stadium, even with only playing 70s music. but the change needed to happen, and the Alarm Clock Bucs never should have happened.

The pic of the decals being applied made me think of a question I’ve had for years. How do they just where to put them? Given the different models and (presumably) sizes, it seems like it would be hard to get in consistent. In fact the pic of the team on the field shows that the linemen’s decals are not in fact very consistently placed.

Anyone here know how they do this?

I bought a Florida Gator helmet decal kit for my hardhat at work. It had no instructions on where to place them on a helmet. Just kind of had to guess where to place them. Luckily, they are made to be easily removed (my guess is so they can put new ones on every week). So, you can actually move them around until you find your final placement. Then, firmly press them on with your thumb.

For me, this is one of those cool for nostalgic purpose situations, but I’m not really a fan of the uniform. Orange is my purple. I dislike it even more with the way uniforms are worn these days. I don’t care to see long undershirts hanging out and players wearing tights and plain white socks with it. Just not appealing to me.

The Bucs have a top 5 uniform set IMO, and these are just the cherry on top. I don’t think they should move to them full time, but I love seeing them occasionally.

The Bucs COULD have a top-5 uniform set if they still used actual “pewter” like in the original rendition of their red uniforms, instead of the dull brownish-gray they use now. Google what actual pewter looks like; it’s much lighter and more metallic than the Bucs’ current color.

The Bucs and Nike faced some limitations when it came to the shade of pewter for the 2020 redesign. Recreating that 1997-2014 shade of pewter wasn’t feasible due to how current materials work.

Agree with you and was aware of that, but also worth stating that Nike CAN produce the perfect shades of orange and white!!

They could have the shiny pewter pants if they wanted. Look at the Cowboys…….. It would just have to be a different material.

This would be great in color vs color games. Are there any teams colored jerseys where this wouldn’t work?

True. Also, not color vs color, but teams playing them with all white uniforms, including white helmets, wouldn’t be good. Isn’t this one of the reasons given, about Vinny Testaverde being colorblind? Not enough contrast from light orange and white.

I thought it was Joe Ferguson of the Bills having problems with too many AFC East teams having white hats.

Never heard that about Vinnie but it wouldn’t surprise me.

This is absolutely true. (Or at least it was the reason given at the time.) It’s why the Bucs always chose to wear white at home during the Testaverde era.

When Lindy Infante was coaching the Packers, in 1988 or ’89, they wore white at home against Tampa in an attempt to confuse Testaverde, who was supposedly color-blind. The idea, I guess, was that the orange was so light it would not be distinguishable from the Packers’ white. I’m pretty sure the Packers lost that game.

This could be a great color-on-color game if the Falcons wear their black throwbacks. I can’t stand any of the new Falcons jerseys, but their throwbacks are more than fine.

My view is that these are the only good thing about the Bucs or Tampa. Red and orange is an underrated combination.

Chances the falcons wear their throwbacks and red helmets in that game?

Longtime Bucs fan here. The Bucs would be nuts to abandon their primary set of uniforms for their throwbacks. The color scheme of red, pewter, orange and black has been around for plenty of success and is still very popular here in the Tampa Bay Area. I don’t see any need to throw away a winning visual identity formula.

Not a Bucs fan but I love their logos and uniforms (except for the alarm clock period) and both pewter and red and creamsicle and white should exist side by side. It would be exciting if they would switch logos on the helmets every once in a while: Bucco Bruce in red, black and white on the pewter lid, the ship in orange and red on the white helmet. I wonder how that would look like.

Gorgeous uniforms! I’ll be a Buccaneers fan for one week this year. If they wore these full-time I’d become a full-time fan, like I was from 76 to 96. The red and pewter is so overrated and unattractive. Trying too hard to be tough. I prefer a swashbuckling, stylish, winking buccaneer over an angry pirate.

This was always one of my top three NFL uniforms only behind the Steelers black unis and the Oilers blues. I do think they would be improved with a recolored modern logo though.

The 49ers just announced their uniform schedule, indicating they will wear their “home red” when playing at Tampa on Nov 10.

November seems a little late for the “wear white because it is hot and humid” Bucaneers/Dolphins/Commanders early season home-white strategy.

Makes me wonder if that will be a “creamsicle” game?? The white helmets and pants would contrast well with gold and red of 49ers, and they are a “high profile” opponent, possibly a national broadcast, which would be another good reason to wear them when general NFL fans are paying attention to TB.

Nov 10th may seem to be a little late to you, but we had a high of 87° on Nov 10th 2023. The Bucs have worn white at home in that portion of the schedule (between week 9 and 11) going back to at least 2014.

I’m fairly certain the creamsicles will only be worn once this season just like last year. I have to think that the team wants to keep the number of games down to a minimum to increase participation and merch sales.
