Miami (of Ohio) Introduces New White Uniforms for 2024

The NCAA’s parade of uniform reveals marched on this morning, with the Miami (OH) Redhawks showing off a new white jersey and pants for the 2024 season.

Without much fanfare (or the seemingly obligatory hype video — at least as of this writing) the new unis have several updates from their previous look. Here’s what was unveiled today:

As you can see, the new uniforms are paired with three different white helmet variations. The jerseys feature three same-size stripes on the jersey caps (which bear more than a passing resemblance to a certain uni maker’s signature look), with “Miami” in red script with a thin black outline on the chest.

The numbers are in a red varsity font, with a black outline and black dropshadow. Here are a few additional looks. If you look at the first shot below, it appears there is an additional red outline within the red numbers. Perhaps this is just a trick of the lighting, or perhaps it’s a different material, which gives the appearance of an outline in that light.

Unfortunately, at least thus far, there have been no looks at the back of the jerseys, but one can surmise the numbers will follow the same pattern on the back. The previous iteration of the jersey had NOB in red.

It also looks like the team has a new striping pattern on the pants. Whereas previously, the white pants had a single, thin red stripe, the new pants look to have a red/black/red stripe.

How do the new whites compare to their previous set?

As you can see, the old uniform (on left, above) did not have any sleeve stripes, instead having TV numbers on the sleeve caps. TV numbers are completely eliminated in this new set. Additionally, the old jerseys featured thin red sleeve stripes at the base of the sleeve cap. Those are gone now. Finally, and as was pointed out earlier, the numbers have changed from a red university block outlined with a thin black line, to a similar style with black block shadow. The “MIAMI” wordmark has also changed from a bespoke all caps font, to the script we now see.

__________

The changes are subtle and to me they are a wash. I like sleeve stripes but I’m not sure these are the best (IMO they should have followed the red/black/red pattern found on the pants), and while I won’t miss the TV numbers, they could have been moved to the top of the shoulders. I never particularly liked the MIAMI wordmark, but I’m not sure the script “Miami” is much better. If you’re a fan of blockshadowed numbers, then you probably like this change, but I actually prefer the old look without it. I don’t mind the change to the pants stripes.

Your thoughts?

Three white helmets? I can see the regular red M logo and the Miami script, but why have a ghost white M on a white helmet. Completely unnecessary. Ghost letters and numbers should be illegal IMHO. I don’t like helmets with different logos/numbers on each side. Otherwise it’s an overall solid look.

Overall, I consider this a slight downgrade. In particular, I dislike the switch to the white facemasks on the white shell. It doesn’t look “clean” compared to the red facemasks, it just makes the rest of the helmet looked washed out.

I’ll amend my comment by saying that I think the white facemask makes the rest of the uniform look washed out, not just the helmet.

I’m still trying to figure out the graphic elements in the middle helmet’s stripe. I am assuming that it could be a nod to the Miami tribe, but the nickname is now the RedHawks and not the Native American R-word, so what it the obligation to have Native American elements to the uni? Maybe the use of “Miami?” Full disclosure I’m a MACtion alum (Go Zips!) and lived in Ox-Vegas for two years post college.

This was covered a few years ago, but has to do with the relationship with the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, which still exists despite the change in mascot. In 2022, there was a Twitter/X post about the meaning of the different helmet elements: link

I really hate how football pants have turned in to bike shorts, both in the NFL and in college.

I feel like the university would look better and be unique if woodmark was ‘Miami OH.’

Nope. It wouldn’t be unique, it would be incorrect. It is in the main school website URL because the other Miami bought their domain first and the average American is too stupid to know that “Miami University” and the “University of Miami” are different things. “Miami of Ohio” doesn’t exist, it is an invention of sportswriters If trademark law was used in the same way in 1925 as it is today the other Miami would have a different name.

thanks Chad. I was just implying its location being in the Miami Valley of Ohio. Nothing wrong with embracing non powrr 5 status. I went to Western Mich.

Why don’t the stripes go all the way to the seams on the shoulder caps? It just looks unfinished.

Also, they maybe could have told those guys to put cups on for the photo shoot.

Slight downgrade. I like white helmets, but when they have contrasting facemasks. I also would like the collar and the sleeve cuffs to be red. They’re okay but a little too boring for me.

I agree with others that the jerseys make me think of the 49ers’ white 1994 throwbacks, with the three red stripes and the black block shadows on the numbers. Though the red “outline” just appears to me to be stitching; either the thread is a lighter shade than the base twill, or it just catches the light differently.

I mean did they let a student photograph this uni reveal????? Why let anyone who wears their uniform with Football hot pants and tights be in the reveal photos? Not to mention the CLEARLY VISIBLE junk… ewwwww, gross.

Love the indigenous artwork. Best part of helemt and ignored by uniwatch. This pages commitment to ignoring all things indigenous and pushing for cultural eradication is truly amazing.

They spent too much money on THREE helmets and not enough on jockstraps apparently. Actually I think this is a downgrade though. I would prefer the MIAMI wordmark on the chest and a red facemask on the helmet.

Think a small cradle at the base of the neck above the school name or maybe on the back of the helmet referencing Miami as the “Cradle of Coaches” would be a cool IYKYK addition.
The adidas MAC uniforms often seem to have a bargain bin look. The jerseys seem tight and stretching TV numbers and such out of place. The stripes on these sleeves have that look.

Too much red, should be all white with white numbers with a black outline…all black or all white or it is not allright!
No, I think this new set is a downgrade. As much as I love drop shadows and scripted wordmarks it does not work here: the wordmark is too small and the drop shadow looks too dominant on an otherwise unspectacular jersey. Three different white helmets looks to me like a snarky comment on today’s need for change with every single game but I am sure it is not meant that way.

I will say this once again: all black or all white or it is not allright. Too much red in here.
