Happy Sunday, everyone! Two nights ago the San Francisco Giants, already mourning the loss of the legendary Willie Mays, found out that another Giants great passed away. The ball club, wearing a memorial patch for Mays, celebrated a victory over the rival LA Dodgers.
__________

__________
That celebration was tempered by the loss of 11-time All Star and longtime Giant Orlando Cepeda.
__________

__________
With his number 30 circled in the graphic, you kind of knew a similar memorial patch was coming. And yesterday, the team delivered, adding a patch on the sleeve for him.

__________
The Mays patch remained on the chest, as you can see in this photo of David Villar on his phone…I mean, adjusting the extended flap on his batting helmet:
__________

__________
Also yesterday, Phil’s Mets added a similar Mays patch (with no name)…
__________

__________
…and a patch for former catcher and Mets Hall of Famer Jerry Grote, who died in April. Grote’s logo is the same as the one already on the sleeve for departed shortstop, coach and manager Buddy Harrelson. In fact, they turned Harrelson’s patch into a dual one for him and for Grote.
__________

__________
That last photo shows the patches looking pretty much centered on the Mets’ City Connect jersey sleeve. Not so much for the Mays patch in the next photo:
__________

__________
Phil was asking me yesterday if that’s the first time a memorial patch had to share the same sleeve as an ad patch. I told him no, because I remembered the umpires having the same issue.
__________

__________
Then, fellow Tweeter @jackhibbert34 reminded us that the Cardinals’ Whitey Herzog memorial shares a sleeve with the ad patch on their City Connect jersey.
__________

__________
Phil, ever the inquisitive one, also asked if the Mets’ three memorials on one jersey are a record. No, because the 1993 Dodgers had three memorials on two patches as well, honoring Roy Campanella, Don Drysdale, and Tim Crews.
__________

__________
And of course our founder reported back in 2010 about the Yankees having three separate memorials (two patches and an armband), for George Steinbrenner, Bob Sheppard, and Ralph Houk. (thanks to reader Paul G. for finding Paul L.’s post)
__________

__________
The umpires have that beat. Back in 2020, they had three memorials, but during the World Series they added a fourth!
__________

__________
Several teams have had two memorials like the Giants…including the Giants two other times. They’re included in this (by no means comprehensive) slideshow:

Hopefully, there won’t be any more patches needed this season for the Giants or Mets.
Love the stampeders unis, especially the striped shoulders! Winnipeg- not so much, too much with the blueish yoke and stripes.
The shoulder stripes for the Stampeders a modern take on their old-timey look. Famously worn back when they won the 1948 Grey Cup.

Most of us really embraced the Blue Bombers going back to royal blue and a modern take on their classic look. They went back to this fulltime last decade. A good, signature look for them. However, the new uniform set to me has been like a fancy car with a dent in the bumper. The blue shoulder yokes on the white jersey are irritating. Easy fix is complete white jersey like they used to wear with this look before they abandoned it for that 1995 disastrous uniform redesign. And fix the helmet stripes.

I am celebrating this weekend. Oh, it’s Canada Day weekend alright, but I am really celebrating looking at the CFL standings and seeing the Blue Bombers at 0-4.
The blue shoulder yoke detracts from what is otherwise be a beautiful road uniform. The Blue Bombers’ home blue and gold uni is the best in all of pro football IMO.
I see what you did there with the “Indian Fever” headline:

A few minor tweaks and that’s song’s good to go on the other side of the world.
Seattle Mariners wore their ” official MLB Batting Practice ” caps with their Northwest Green (teal) jerseys last night against Twins. Sales must have flat lined so they now are being pushed on Saturday home games. We will see when they wear teal on road if that cap is used.
Saw that on the tube last night. Can’t say I’m a fan for in-game use. The “S” is hard to see on the white background. I tend to agree that a hat with white front panel generally works better if it is a logo that is not a letter. For the Orioles, Blue Jays, Expos – it is classic and amazing. A lot of other times not so much.
The teal hat with the navy brim for the Mariners would be a great hat specifically to match with this jersey.
I hope one day The Mariners go back to being a royal blue and yellow team…lose the compass, return to the trident while they’re at it.

I must be well on my way to becoming a cricket fan; I like the uniforms, and that’s as good an entreė as any!
The revolution starts one fan at a time. Welcome aboard!
Not sure I can support taking 4 days to watch a Cricket Match. That and after many years I STILL don’t understand the scoring…
T20 is not Test Cricket.
To put it in baseball terms:
Each team gets 120 pitches (more or less) to score as many runs as they can.
Each pitcher can only throw a maximum of 24 pitches.
A run occurs each time the batter and base runner switch places.
Hitting the outfield wall (including foul territory) = 4 runs.
Over the wall = 6 runs.
The team’s “at bat” ends when either all 120 pitches are used up or 10 outs are recorded.
Games last 2.5-3 hours, depending on relative skill of the opponents.
T20 is such a perfect format for the USA. Every bowl (pitch) means something and a chase like yesterday’s final was exciting up until the final ball.
“REALLY nice looking game up in Calgary”
Ain’t that the truth!
If both teams ‘had’ to tweak their looks for that one, I’d have both squads lose the shoulder logos (hate when the helmet logo get repeated there) …Stampeders could replace them with TV numbers – and Winnipeg should ‘right-size’ theirs.
Love the alternate uniforms for the UW vs SMU game. Though not sure why SMU has Houston instead of Dallas on their jerseys.
That’s a strange shade of purple on the Huskies. Maybe it’s Forum Blue.
The Yankees also had three memorial patches (well, two patches and a band) in 2010 for Bob Sheppard, Steinbrenner, and Ralph Houk.

Thanks!
I was told by someone in the know that the armband was for Steinbrenner as well as the patch. I’ll add this update at some point today when I get home.
Updated, with credit given. Thanks again.
Is the Giants number font the same as the Celtics’ one?
Megill’s Mays patch almost looks like they tried to center it between two pinstripes. But zooming in put that theory to rest. It’s still a little too far to the left in that context.
