EXCLUSIVE: Zambonis Debut New Song, ‘What the Tkachuk?’

Just in time for the start of the Stanley Cup Final(s), our hockey-rock band, the Zambonis, have a new track, called “What the Tkachuk?,” and it’s debuting exclusively here at Uni Watch!

Zambonis defenseman/guitarist/singer Dave Schneider describes the song like so: “For 32 years, dudes have walked up to us and told us we need to write a song called ‘What the Puck.’ At which point we’ve always walked away with some condescending ‘Yeh, right’ smirk. But now, ‘What the puck, Matt Tkachuk’ has finally happened, and we apologize to Chad, Todd, Chip, etc., etc.”

Here’s the song:

You can see lyrics, credits, and more here, and you can explore a shit-ton of additional Zambonis music here.

Matt Tkachuk and the rest of the Florida Panthers will face off against the Vegas Golden Knights in Game One of the Stanley Cup Final(s) tomorrow night.

On the main page, that Whalers logo fits that guitar so perfectly. Also, “Tkachuk” is a perfect onomatopoeia for the sound of a shot in hockey.

I’m not a hockey fan and had never heard of this player before, so I definitely thought that was what the song was about until I actually read this post.

Creatively turned their denim shorts in vintage tackla breezers. super cool and definitely would sell if they wanted to.

Tkachuk was a guest on Inside the NBA on TNT, visiting his first Heat game and saying hi to his high school buddy Jayson Tatum of the Celtics. Seems like a personable guy and he is a very good hockey player I found out.

Has that Whalers logo guitar been mentioned on here before? This is the first time I am seeing it and it is awesome.

I’m totally going to use “Tkachuk” in place of the real thing if I can. Like, “what the Tkachuk is this?” Also, I so love the use of the Whalers’ logo on that SG-like guitar. What a great fit!

The Panthers have personalized goal songs for each player after they score (the notable exception being a 5th goal, which no matter who scores they play “Mambo #5”). I wonder if someone can convince them to switch it out for games 3 & 4 here in FL.

That first link for the Zambonis seems to be broken.

As an aside, is this the first time an NBA Finals and a Stanley Cup Final series have been played in the same arena? I’m thinking maybe Boston…

The Panthers and Heat do not play in the same arena.

Off the top of my head, the Rangers (vs Canucks) and Knicks (vs Rockets) both hosted games in their respective finals in 1994 at Madison Square Garden.

The Heat and Panthers play in different arenas.

The last teams that shared an arena during the Final(s) were the Nets and Devils in 2003.

Think the first couple songs I remember off the top my head mentioning a hockey player’s name are:

I make the dough, you get the glory by Kathleen Edwards – “You’re the Great One, I’m Marty McSorley”
(Along with being mentioned in the lyrics Marty McSorley (along with other players appear in the video)

Me Like Hockey by the Arrogant Worms – “What’s a Teemu anyway?” and “Me like Sergei Federov …”
