Jimmer Vilk’s 5 & 1
Welcome to the Five and One for 2022!
After more than a decade in hiatus, Jim Vilk (the original “5 & 1” decider) returned! And he’s back again for 2022.
The concept of the 5&1 is simple: Jim will pick five good matchups (not necessarily the five best anymore… he will have categories that will change from week to week) and one awful matchup.
You may agree and you may disagree — these are, after all, just opinions and everyone has one. Feel free to let him know what you think in the comments section.
If you have a game you feel is “worthy” of consideration for the 5 & 1, please either post it in the comments below or tweet Mr. Vilk @JVfromOhio.
Here’s today’s 5 & 1:
Come closer…I’m going to let you in on a little secret. OK, that’s close enough. As much as I go on about mono uniforms and teams straying from school colors, there’s a dark mono alt uni that I really really like. It’s Washington State’s.
The reason I like it so much is because in small doses, white really pops. You can see it here, and you can see it as we begin the Five Good Things with…
5. The “If You’re Going To Keep Feeding Me Mono White vs Mono Dark, I Won’t Spit This One Up” Matchup:
Hey Cleveland…*this* is how you do mono brown!
4. The “Phil Talked Me Into This One But He Didn’t Have To Twist My Arm” Matchup:
Usually the Buffaloes are lucky to make one appearance a year, but this is their second thanks to that sweet Bears road uni.
3. The “Red (Pants) Alert!” Game:
With a Script Alert from Sparty!
2. The “Yes, I Said Number Two” Matchup:
This game usually owns the top spot but…
1. Simply The Best:
I love me some horsey head helmets against a classic Navy look.
Those shiny helmets and too-light numbers vs the “Blue” Devils were not awesome, baby.
See you next week!
Thanks, Jim! OK readers? What say you? Agree or disagree with Jimmer’s selections? Let him know in the comments below.
No love for the Tulane/USF game? Tulane in white/white/powder blue with powder blue facemasks vs USF in white/green/white. Game was beautiful!
Thought about that one, and if Tulane wore green or blue helmets, they were in. Just missed the cut along with Vandy/Georgia and Colgate/Army.
Minnesota/Illinois could have cracked the Top 5, but the Golden (ahem) Gophers chose to go white from head-to-toe with a little maroon thrown in.
I like Minnesota when they look like Minnesota. There needs to be gold in them there Gophers!
Alabama and Tennessee: classic and it fits!
Bama and UT – classic uniforms. Can’t beat it.
I like Bama at home better than on the road. Or at LSU.
Bold move having LSU and Florida at number 2. That SMU uniform is a great look.
Great to have brown uniforms represented in the 5. Brown uniforms get an undeserved bad reputation. It is a colour too and looks good! No secret I am a proponent for more brown uniforms.
Couldn’t agree more about brown. Wyoming quietly has some of the most beautiful uniforms in all of cfb.
Wyoming, yes. CMU…NO!
I thought Air Force/UNLV would have your contrasting self excited!
An early version of my Five had all three service academies in it. It came down to the little things: Colgate’s black facemasks vs Army and UNLV’s gray numbers on the red jerseys vs Air Force. If I still did Honorable Mentions, they would have gotten them.
No real talk about the TCU vs Oklahoma State game? Those TCU uniforms may be the worst thing I have ever seen.
I was kind of surprised, but it’s not the first time they’ve worn those so maybe that’s why. They’ve worn them (or something very similar to them) for at least three years. And although I should *hate* the uniform, I actually love it. Back in 2019 (sorry for all the link rot) I gushed about them link, and I’ve lauded them in the years since.
The SMU game was amazing. The TCU game was not. Oklahoma State looked good, but the Frogs looked gross.
No Michigan v Penn State?
If that game were in State College (and PSU wore their GOG unis), AND UM had maize pants, then I think Jimmer would put it in The Five. Without maize pants, no way Jim gives UM The Five nod.
SMU-Navy was the clear winner this week. Well worth staying up on a Friday night to watch.
No one is talking about the perfect contrast game ISU v. Texas
