Guess The Game From The Scoreboard for August 4, 2022

Guess The Game…

…From The Scoreboard

Today’s scoreboard comes from Leslie Holt.

The premise of the game (GTGFTS) is simple: I’ll post a scoreboard and you guys simply identify the game depicted. In the past, I don’t know if I’ve ever completely stumped you (some are easier than others).

Here’s the Scoreboard. In the comments below, try to identify the game (date & location, as well as final score). If anything noteworthy occurred during the game, please add that in (and if you were AT the game, well bonus points for you!):

Please continue sending these in! You’re welcome to send me any scoreboard photos (with answers please), and I’ll keep running them.

September 30, 1956 the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8 – 6 at Ebbets field in Brooklyn.

The Sal Maglie as a Schaefer Award winner was a giveaway it was from 1956. To be precise, 9/30/56, as the Dodgers held off the Pirates 8-6 to hold off the Braves in the standings, clinching the NL pennant.

This was Don Newcombe’s 27th win of the season, but more importantly, Jackie Robinson’s final regular season game at Ebbett’s Field

    Date: September 30th, 1956
    Location: Ebbets Field, Brooklyn
Final score: Dodgers 8, Pirates 6
Dodgers clinch pennant on the last day of the season.

Just struck by the fact that that game was played when I was 1 year old, I’ve never been a Dodgers fan, and yet I know the entire Dodgers lineup from their uniform numbers. That team is really imprinted on the nation’s baseball consciousness, thanks to Roger Kahn, Ken Burns, et al.

Yes, and Dick Groat, Bill Virdon, and Vern Law. They were already building that 1960 WS winner.

Not a Dodgers fan but I love Ebbets Field. Glad the Mets took some inspiration from it for Citi Field.

Pretty cool how the photo shows ol’ Skoonj making the catch right at the “6 RF” on the scoreboard.

(edit) after further review, he didn’t make the catch. Groat doubled to right to lead off the top of the seventh.
