NCAA Bowl Pool Predictions – Part II

NCAA Bowl Logos 2010-2011 (19-35) hed

By Phil Hecken, with Tod Hess

Back today with part II of the College Bowl predictions and previews, joined by Tod Hess, who has put together the Uni Watch NCAA Bowl Pool. If you want to dispense with the remaining 17 bowl writeups, and head straight to the poll, it’s right below. The reader poll showed that you guys want a pool based on STRAIGHT picks. So, here it is:

Uni Watch Football Bowl Pool. Our Group ID# is 6828 and the Password is bfbs (lower case).

If you missed yesterday’s article explaining the set up, feel free to check back now. Otherwise, let’s finish up the remaining matchups.

~~~
December 31, 2010
Meineke Bowl (Charlotte, NC): Clemson (-4.5) vs. South Florida (O/U 40)
Tod Hess: All orange (Clemson) versus all white (South Florida). I will go with South Florida in a mild upset.
Phil Hecken: I’m not sure what combination Clemson will wear (another Oregon wanna-be) but despite the garanimals-tendency, at least they have a fairly traditional uni-frame. South Florida has great colors, but the collar horns (yeah, I get they’re the “Bulls”) aren’t a good look. I’ll take Clemson.
~~~

Sun Bowl (El Paso, TX): Notre Dame (+3) vs. Miami (O/U 47)

TH: Miami wins the game, Notre Dame look better.

PH: Uni-wise, this is no contest. The game will probably be closer, but the Irish eyes dress will be smiling. Give me Notre Dame.

~~~
Liberty Bowl (Memphis, TN): Georgia (-6) vs. UCF (O/U 55)
TH: I have always loved Georgia’s uniforms and even if Central Florida is 10-3, the Bulldogs will win.
PH: In another easy uni-pick ’em, the Bulldogs are so classically superior in the sartorial department, it makes it very easy to take Georgia.
~~~

Chick-Fil-A Bowl (Atlanta, GA): South Carolina (-2.5) vs. Florida State (O/U 55)

TH: Give me a #1 with a vanilla shake, er Florida State has better uniforms, South Carolina has the better team. Gamecocks win.

PH: The ‘Noles have had some crazy unis the past several years, but it seems they’ve settled back into their classic garnet and gold scheme. That would normally be enough, but the ‘Cocks unis are, well…not good (nice colors, but terrible unis). I’ll take Florida State.

~~~
January 1, 2011
Ticket City Bowl (Dallas, TX): Northwestern (+11.5) vs. Texas Tech (O/U 60.5)
TH: Texas Tech wins the game and looks much better in the process.
PH: Good lord. Another choice between the lesser of two evils. Black and purple look horrible together (although the Ravens do it better than NW, which isn’t saying much). Still, they at least have Northwestern striping, and the white over white is quite nice. Texas wreck has better colors, but the uni is far worse. The spread will probably continue to grow and I’ll regret the pick, but I’m taking Northwestern. Maybe the uni gods will have mercy on my pick.
~~~

Capital One Bowl (Orlando, FL): Michigan State (+7) vs. Alabama (O/U 52.5)

TH: I detest Michigan State’s new uniforms and Alabama’s are classic. In the game Saban rolls his old team as Alabama smokes the Spartans.

PH: There is no uni matchup, not even PSU, for which I would not pick Alabama, so the opponent is immaterial here. However, Sparty used to have really great unis, until this ‘university-wide rebrand’ they underwent, designed to be uniform (pun intended) across all sports. They downgraded in the process. No contest, the Tide will Roll. Alabama wins.

~~~
Outback Bowl (Tampa, FL): Florida (-5) vs. Penn State (O/U 48)
TH: Both teams have great uniforms. Nod to Penn State in the uniform department. Florida wins the game for Urban Meyer.
PH: PSU sports my second favorite uni, so once again, this one is no contest, uni-wise. That being said, Florida does usually have pretty sweet unis as well. However, Florida is one of four teams (Boise, TCU & Oregon are the others) slated to receive special new bowl costumes, so we can expect another new look for the Gators. Doesn’t change my choice, no matter what that costume is. I choose Penn State.
~~~

Gator Bowl (Jacksonville, FL): Michigan (+5) vs. Mississippi State (O/U 52.5)

TH: Uniforms — Michigan. Game — Michigan. I know in my head they probably won’t win but this one I pick with my heart.

PH: Michigan still has a classic home … er, dark uni, although adidas has done their best to ruin the white jersey. Mississippi State is pure dreck, what with all the lumbar panels and side stripes. BFBS unis actually looked better than their regular ones, but you don’t spit on your school colors unless you play in Eugene. Easy pick: Michigan.

~~~
Rose Bowl (Pasadena, CA): TCU (+2.5) vs. Wisconsin (O/U 58)
TH: I don’t care what TCU comes out in, Wisconsin will look better and will win the game.
PH: Ah…the granddaddy of them all. THE game. The Pac 10 vs. the Big 10 in a cage death match for braggin’ rights. What’s that? TCU is in the Rose? DAMN YOU TO HELL, BCS SYSTEM. Well, we all know the Pac 10 winner (your Oregon Ducks) would have trounced Sconie, so maybe this will be a fairer fight. On the uni-fight, this is no contest. Wisconsin trumps anything the Horny Toads come out wearing — and it will be something we’ve never seen before, since Nike will be giving them new costumes just for the Rose. How sweet. Sorry Texas Christian — I’ll be rooting for you big time, but I ain’t pickin’ ya. The choice is Wisconsin.
~~~

Fiesta Bowl (Glendale, AZ): Connecticut (+17) vs. Oklahoma (O/U 55)

TH: Sorry UConn fans but they don’t belong in a BCS game. Oklahoma in a blowout on the field and in the better looking uniform department.

PH: This is another reason why the BCS sucks: guaranteed bids. No offense to the good people of the Nutmeg State, but your team is way out of its element here. And UConn’s unis are not in the same class as Oklahoma either. This, kiddies, is your “Lock of the (second day)”. As much as I can’t stand to hear Boomer Sooner, I expect it will be resonating throughout the southwest early and often. With no spread to overcome, this one is no contest: Oklahoma, by a ton.

~~~
January 3, 2011
Orange Bowl (Miami, FL): Stanford (-3) vs. Virginia Tech (O/U 58)
TH: I still can’t get pass the James Madison loss that Virginia Tech had. Stanford wins this game and unless Va Tech comes out in throwbacks, Stanford looks better too.
PH: I still can’t get past the Boise Community College loss that Va Tech had. Of course, they’ve improved since then. Va Tech does have a real purdy white over white with a white lid (despite the truncated stripe) but Stanford, with the exception of the momentary loss of reason (also known as BFBS), still has superior unis, both home and away. Stanford probably should have gotten the Rose, but the Orange will do. I’ll take Stanford for a nice birthday present.
~~~

January 4, 2011

Sugar Bowl (New Orleans, LA): Ohio State (-2.5) vs. Arkansas (O/U 58)

TH: Ohio State has the better uniforms and probably will win the game but as a Michigan fan, I just can’t bring myself to pick them. I will go with ex-Wolverine Ryan Mallet and the Arkansas Razorbacks.

PH: THE Ohio State University has pretty great unis — the silver is perfect, but the garnet needs fixin. I kid, that’s a little jab at THE Rob. Seriously, the Bucks have a pretty classic uni and even the Nike throwback costume they wore against Michigan was nice. The Razorbacks really shouldn’t be putting SNNOL (school nick-name on leg). A stripe is all that belongs on the side of one’s pants. Nuff said. I’ll take Ohio State.

~~~
January 6, 2011
Go Daddy.com Bowl (Mobile, AL): Miami (Ohio) (-3) vs. Middle Tennessee (O/U 48.5)
TH: Danica Patrick over Candice Mic er Miami of Ohio has the better uniforms and will beat the Blue Raiders of Middle Tennessee State.
PH: The “go daddy” bowl? Well, at least the commercials will be entertaining. Miami of Ohio has some pretty nice unis, actually, and Middle Tennessee actually blends a classic with a modern look reasonably well; that BFBS was a bit much though. Pretty easy choice here, takin’ Miami.
~~~

January 7, 2011

Cotton Bowl (Arlington, TX): Texas A&M (+2.5) vs. LSU (O/U 49)

TH: LSU has a better uniform than Texas A&M and a better team. LSU wins this bowl.

PH: A&M has pretty nice unis, but what’s with the wavy piping on the pants? Don’t. Do. That. And of course, the Tigers would match up with almost any team anyway, since their uni is approaching perfection, so A&M had too much to overcome from the get-go. Easy choice here, geaux LSU.

~~~
January 8, 2011
BBVA Compass Bowl (Birmingham, AL): Pittsburgh (-3) vs. Kentucky (O/U 53)
TH: If Pitt comes out in blue or gold pants they have the better uniform, but if the pull that uniform out they wore against Cincinnati, Kentucky has the better uniform. Either way Pitt wins this game.
PH: Pitt has better unis, unless you factor in their pro combat costume. Kentucky actually doesn’t have bad unis, unless you factor in that seemingly pointless double stripe on their midsection which neither begins nor ends anywhere it should. I’m not really a fan of KY when they go mono blue, so that tips the scales ever so slightly towards the yinzers. I’ll go with Pittsburgh, by a razor-thin margin.
~~~

January 9, 2011

Fight Hunger Bowl (San Francisco, CA): Boston College (+9) vs. Nevada (O/U 55)

TH: Boston College better uniform but, Nevada better team. Nevada wins the game in a blow out.

PH: BC has better colors, and far superior striping (although I could do without that fat Redskin-esque pants striping) but crappy fonts. Nevada has horrible bumperstickers, but better fonts. They’d probably look better if they didn’t go monochrome all the time, too. I think Nevada will win, but the sartorial choice is Boston College

~~~
January 10, 2011
BCS Championship Game (Glendale, AZ): Auburn (-1.5) vs. Oregon (O/U 74)
TH: I think the last team to have the ball wins this game. Auburn has the better uniforms but I think Oregon wins the game. Either way bet the over!
PH: OK, you know where my heart lies, so you know for whom I’ll be rooting. Of course, as of now, I have no way of knowing what the hell Nike has in store for Oregon’s bowl costume, but it can’t hold a candle to Auburn, more than likely. So, based on uni-matchup, I have to side with War Eagle. And that’s probably the only time I’ll be picking Under Armour over Nike. Wait…did I just make this game about the uniform manufacturers? Shoot me if I did. The pick: Auburn.
Alright. That’s the end of the Bowl previews/predictions. If you haven’t already made your selections, it’s time to move on to the pool. Make your selections below, and good luck to all the participants. Big thanks to Tod Hess for setting the pool up, and also to Zach Brady for the Bowl matchup graphics/locations/times/tv stations.
colorize this
Colorize This!
Occasionally, I will be featuring wonderful, high-quality black and white photographs that are just begging to be colorized.
Last weekend I thought it might be cool to have people colorize this tremendous shot of Al Bridwell & Jimmy Archer. A few of you took me up on the offer. Let’s see what we have:
First up is first-time colorizer Barry Moss:
Phil,
I’ve enjoyed the site for a long time and thought it would be fun to give the colorization a try. Being a Cubs fan I figured this would be a good one to start on after doing the first couple of tutorials. I thought it turned out pretty well for a first try. What do you think?
Barry Moss
~~~

I also received a couple from Michael Ferry:

Hi Phil,

Once again, loved seeing everyone’s work on the Red Wings…hats off to Chris Bieniek and George Chilvers for colorizing the background on the Powell photo, which takes patience and a good eye.

I’m submitting a modified Boog Powell, with a red brim like Paul Bilewicz noted. And part of me wanted to try the background on the Bridwell Archer pic, but I just don’t have the time this week…well, and even if I’d had the time, the background was looking like a real challenge. Anyway, thanks as always, have a good one.

Regards,

Michael Ferry

~~~
Our favourite colouriser from across the Pond, George Chilvers also checked in with the following:
Boog Powell (with red brim) … Bridwell & Archer from the 1913 Cubs … and Johnny McNally from the ’29 Packers.
~~~

Finally we have Dylan Buell:

Hey Phil

Here’s my version of the photo colorized.

Thanks!

Dylan

~~~
Nice work lads!
Two choices for this week (and feel free to send in something unsolicited — if it’s great, I’ll run it). The first one is this week’s Reader Request, which is a nice challenge. It comes from Chris Bisbee, who is a proud member of our Armed Forces (or, at least I think he is):
Phil,
Any chance of getting this classic picture of John Wayne colorized? Thanks.
Respectfully,
Chris Bisbee
Naval Facilities Expeditionary Logistics Center
Port Hueneme, CA
Thanks, Chris. The description on that photo is as follows: “John Wayne appears in battle garb he wore as a member of the 1925 undefeated USC Trojan frosh foobtall team. John Wayne’s name then was Marion Morrison.” OK, everyone, this is a great challenge.
The next pic is from Shorpy again, and it’s another beaut: Hank Gowdy of the 1914 Braves. The full description is: “Hank Gowdy of the Boston Braves in a photo dated Oct. 13, 1914, the final game of the World Series. (Although this seems to be at the Polo Grounds and the Series that year was at Fenway Park.)” A quick check of Dressed to the Nines shows us this is how the Braves looked during that season. Should be a great image to colorize.
Thanks again to all the colorizers, and if you find a hi-res image that cries out for a little colorization, send it my way.
all sport uni tweaks
Uni Tweaks
Lots and lots of tweaks keep pouring in, so obviously this is a popular feature. A bunch new to get to today. If you have a tweak, change or concept for any sport, send them my way.
Remember, if possible, try to keep your descriptions to ~50 words (give or take) per tweak. You guys have been great a keeping to that, and it’s much appreciated!
Now, on to today’s tweaks:
~~~

Starting off the show is Peter Saunders, who has some new looks for the Patriots:

Phil,

I have always marveled at the elegance of the red and white retro unis showcased by the New England Patriots throughout the past few years, but find it disappointing that Pats fans associate those colors with losing. Considering that sentiment, I created a “faux-back” of sorts that encompasses the classic design of the Patriots’ early uniforms while keeping with the basic elements of today’s Brady-era unis.

Home — Silver-blue-silver, like the current, but with simplified fonts and classic striping on the jersey. I removed the pants striping to complement the helmet.

Away — Silver-white-blue, also keeping with the current set.

Away Alternate 1 — Silver-white-white, hearkening back to the white-on-white days of old.

Away Alternate 2 – Silver-white-silver, complementing the home set but not as aesthetically pleasing in my opinion.

Thanks for your time,

Peter Saunders

~~~
Next up is Kyle Allebach, with a Seahawks tweak:
Dear Phil,
For my uni-tweak, the Seattle Seahawks. I changed the pants and helmet to silver, but kept the basic shirt design. Also, a neon green belt. I experimented with the neon green a lot, and even on a silver jersey with green numerals, but stuck to the two uni’s I have now. Unfortunately, I’m not skilled enough with photo editing software (I used Photobucket), or else I would have more experiments.
Thanks for your time,
Kyle Allebach
~~~

In the three spot today is Mike Benkert, who some new looks for the Bengals:

Hi Phil,

In tweaking my hometown Cincinnati Bengals uniforms I wanted to address two major issues. (1) Minimizing the amount of stripes on the pants and jerseys to compliment the helmet, rather than overwhelm it. (2) Standardizing the uniform set so there aren’t so many variations and inconsistencies amongst the pants and jersey designs, home and aways, and stretchy and standard jersey templates. Old, new home & away.

Thanks,

-Mike Benkert

~~~
That’s it for today. Check back next weekend for more.
vilk 5 & 1-B
5 & 1, Best of Edition
And now, the part of the post you’ve all been waiting for: The 5 & 1. But this isn’t your usual 5 & 1 — this is THE year end, best of, wrap up Cinco y Uno, Mothersunbowlvilker-style.
He’s had a whole year to work on these, so lets see if he gets any of them right.
~~~

5. Nebraska/Iowa State — The Cyclones blew me away all year long.

4. SMU/Tulane — The Green Wave’s white helmets were a major upgrade.

3. Temple/Penn State — Both teams with NNOB…just another reason to love this matchup.

2. USC/UCLA — Last year UCLA wore a throwback jersey to make this #1…

1. Ole Miss/LSU — …while last year’s #2 stayed its good old timelessly classic self.

And the bad one: Utah State/Boise State — I’d say your unis are why the BCS won’t take you seriously, but then again they did take Oregon…

~~~
OK, then. There you have it. The Mothersunbowlvilker’s all-season best 5 and 1 worst. I have a feeling the Little Caesar’s Bowl may just challenge your “1” for the worst overall. And, of course, you still missed the worst regular season game. But we knew that already.
But hey — with four new costumes for the Bowls, we may have not even seen the worst yet.
terry proctor
Recollections from Terry Proctor
Way back in September, it was announced that Bing Crosby’s wine cellar holds a copy of Game 7 of the 1960 World Series. At the time, all that was mentioned was that it was going to air on the MLB Network sometime later this fall.
MLB has finally announced that it will be airing the game this Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 8:00 pm (eastern).
Back in September, I asked Terry Proctor, UW historian, if he had seen the game and if he had any recollections of it that he’d like to share. He sure did. Here’s what Terry told me:
“I remember that game very well. I was 13 years old and in the 8th grade at Livonia Jr.-Sr. High School. In those years of afternoon World Series games the school administration was quite lenient in allowing students to either listen to or watch the games.
“School itself was not disrupted but if you had a study hall in the afternoon you were allowed to go to the auditorium and watch the game for the length of that period. A TV was also set up in the boys’ half of our gymnasium and if you had gym class you watched the game. Our phys. ed. teacher/coach/athletic director (if you were a PE guy back then you did all of those jobs as part of the deal-no specialization) was a huge baseball fan and worked as a “bird dog” scout for the Phillies He was friends with Eddie Sawyer, manager of the “Whiz Kids” and the Sawyer family lived in Mt. Morris, NY about 12 miles from Livonia. Eddie Sawyer’s daughter was a phys ed. student at Ithaca College in 1963 and did her practice teaching at Livonia in an arrangement worked out by our coach, Gene Baker.
“When classes would change I would turn on my portable radio and get the update, passing the news to anyone I passed in the hall and to the members of my next class. I’ve always been a Yankee hater, so I always rooted for the National League club regardless of who it was. Any team as long as it wasn’t the Yankees.
“Our school day at Livonia started at 8:35 AM and ended at 3:35 PM. This was because our district had a lot of farm families and many kids had to help out with morning chores before school. The later starting time made this possible.
“The time 3:35 PM is memorable to me because that’s the exact minute that Bill Mazeroski’s series-deciding home run left Forbes Field. If you look at the picture of Yankee left-fielder Yogi Berra watching the ball disappear over the wall you will note that the scoreboard clock reads “3:35.” The day-ending bell had just rung and I was on the stairs going down to the school bus as Maz hit his shot. Being a real Yankee hater I began yelling for joy and it fely like I flew down those stairs and out of the door.
“To me, the World Series was a more prestigious event in the old days. The entire nation sort of “took the week off” from work, school and other pursuits to enjoy the last taste of baseball for the year and to get ready for the coming winter.
“I feel fortunate to have been able to enjoy the World Series as I did in those days. Nowadays the night games get over very late, often when kids are in bed. I still believe that by watching or listening to the games in school in those days helped to cultivate more baseball fans. Not so today. Most kids today gravitate to football, which is predominately an afternoon sport. Do MLB leaders need a road map to figure this out?”
Wow. Thanks, Terry. I’ll most definitely be watching this game come Wednesday night. It’s always nice to watch the Yankees lose the World Series.
~~~~~~~~~~

Alrighty, ladies and germs. That’s almost it for this fine Sunday in December.

“I went to a football stadium and a hockey game broke out.” OK, so it’s not the classic fight/hockey joke, but they did play hockey inside the Big House yesterday. They called it “The Big Chill.” Only a few people showed up. Wow…that’s gotta be like, a record, or something. In fact, it was — more people have watched a hockey game in Michigan than have seen a football game — at least in one day.

Michigan & Sparty played, and Michigan brought out some sweet throwbacks. Too bad the maize on the jersey didn’t match the process yellow on the helmets. Still, a great look for the Wolverines. Although, I wonder how many people could even see the game from the “cheap” seats.

Don’t forget to join the Official UW Bowl Pool for a chance to call yourself “CHAMP” for a year. Unfortunately, no prizes for this — I had asked Paul about it and all the year-end goodies are already committed to Paul’s Big Raffles. So if you join the pool, and you know you will, it’s all for glory, not swag. But isn’t just being in the pool reward enough?

Enjoy the NFL today, unless of course, you live in Minnesota and New York (oh right, the Jets are playing — boy, that Tom Brady’s some QB, eh?). In case you haven’t yet heard, Minnesota got walloped with such a blizzard that they’re postponing today’s game until Monday night. So, if you live in the New York & Minnesota coverage areas, you’ll get that game on Fox. Have a great Sunday everyone.

    (Re: last night’s Le Islanders game): Phil, surprised you didn’t mention the icelanders preview of their new jersey’s last night! It was great to see them embracing their future french canadian roots! It was a true testament to the Islander fan: an extinct franchises fan base is louder and more passionate! (How do you say relocation in French)? It was great to see the 2nd best jersey in hockey (behind Hartford) out in #’s!

    I assume most of us have heard by now that the Metrodome roof deflated at 5 a.m. from the weight of the 5th largest single day snowfall in Twin Cities’ history.

    At noon it will be 2 above zero.

    Yeah, today an outdoor stadium would have been…interesting.

    —Ricko

    For the weather wonks…
    Officially 17.5″ at airport.
    For me in Eden Prairie (same suburb as Vikings’ offices and facility) probably around 20″. Suburb immediately SW of us had the most, at 21.5″.
    Downtown, where Dome collapsed, around 16″, I guess.
    Busses stopped running mid-afternoon yesterday, will resume at 10 a.m. today. Lotta people slept at Mall of America, apparently.
    Even ministers were calling the TV stations last night to say staying home from church this a.m. would be okay, “God will understand.”

    Right. But the NFL’s gonna be pissed about the Dome thing.

    —Ricko

    I just checked in to wish you good luck digging out, Ricko! Far cry from the weather we had up there at the Deep Freeze last year!

    Yeah, all things considered, that weather was better.

    To make it worse, today is one of those days to gather a witch, a welldigger and a brass monkey and check to see how cold it really is.

    Just shoveled the patio again. Damn, it’s awful out there. Clear and sunny but–yeow!–that wind.

    —Ricko

    Ah, “deflated” is now being replaced with “collapsed”.
    Snow on the roof, of course, and on the playing surface.

    The air-supported Dome has deflated before. This is first time it has fully collapsed. Total pancake.

    Awful lot to get done by Monday night.

    (And many, of course, are kidding that’s some kind of karma…giving Farve’s shoulder more time to heal and keep his streak alive).

    We’ll be getting Packers-Lions on Fox today.

    —Ricko

    This just in. Dome won’t be ready Monday. Won’t be ready Tuesday.

    Possibility of playing at U of M’s TCF Bank Stadium being investigated.

    —Ricko

    I am somewhat surprised that 17 inches was a big deal in Minny. I just always assumed that you guys up there measured snowfall in feet like they do in Buffalo! Seriously though, I was really surprised that it was such an event.

    I was listening to the local sports radio ( here in Charlotte NC ) this morning and they mentioned the possibility of the game being moved to the Meadowlands..I really don’t see that happening. The radio guy then said that would be very suspiciously convenient for the Giants…..REALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!

    This really does kill the Big Blue’s chances against the Eagles next week.

    On a closing note….. It is almost unfathomable for me to have ever imagined that I would be rooting for both the Cowboys and the Patriots to win their respective games!!!!!!

    There are snowstorms and there are blizzards, not the same thing. The issue is the wind…as far as stopping things in their tracks. Plows couldn’t keep up. I have a small patio I need to keep clear so small dog can get out to do her business. I shoveled the damn thing at least six times yesterday, and again this morning. Just kept building up.

    That has nothing do with Dome collapsing, of course.

    —Ricko

    Common misconception about Twin Cities. Buffalo gets more snow, and Detroit and Cleveland get about the same as here, on average.

    You could look it up.

    —Ricko

    Not surprised that the game being postponed is a big story…. I am a Giants fan, so this is a HUGE story for me…

    I am surprised that 17 inches was a big deal in Minny. I guess I just always had the misconception that the Twin Cities got hit like that all the time and that the Metrodome was built to sustain things like that.

    As far as the Giants not wanting to play outdoors…. they are not exactly the Miami Dolphins!! It gets plenty cold back home in Jersey! Remember the last time the G-Men played Brett Farve in the Frozen Tundra… Skiba just needs to drive to a local shop and pick up some long johns!!!

    Snowfall totals vary up here. The Twin Cities are landlocked, so they get lots of cold but not as much snow as lake effect areas. Buffalo gets a fair amount of lake effect snow, but nothing like the south shore of Lake Superior.

    The wind is a big reason why the snow was such an issue, because the workers clearing off the Metrodome roof had to be pulled off for safety and couldn’t clear the snow in normal time.

    They are also mentioning Ford Field since the Fox TV crew will already be in place for the Lions “game” today. If it happens, it will be the best NFL playing in that stadium since Super Bowl XL.

    I’m pretty sure that Green Bay fans would riot at the very idea of the Vikings playing as the “home” team at Lambeau.

    One there is no TV crew in place at Lambeau since the Packers are at Detroit today. Two you have the same problem with cold weather gear for the Giants as you do playing at the University of Minnesota.

    I gotta imagine that Joe Skiba must be scrambling right now if they are going to play outdoors. I highly doubt they brought the cold weather gear for the trip to Minny.

    I have heard it reported several times that they did not bring their cold weather gear to Minnesota, er, Kansas City since they actual have got to Minnesota yet.

    The latest from local MSP Fox affiliate news (they’re cutting into national broadcast)…

    Any Viking ticketholders who go to Detroit will be given best seats in the house, “right on the 50.”

    Other tickets will be given out free in Detroit, starting at 10 a.m. (I think it is) tomorrow.

    The U’s TCF Bank Stadium was the first choice, but Vikings were told it had been “shut down for the season” and couldn’t be made ready in time.

    Next Monday night’s game with Bears at Dome still in doubt at the moment.

    TV changed, too. Getting Packers-Lions on Fox and, because now no game in town, Bengals-Steelers on CBS, which wasn’t scheduled to air here.

    —Ricko

    “The U’s TCF Bank Stadium was the first choice, but Vikings were told it had been “shut down for the season” and couldn’t be made ready in time.”

    Oh, man. I don’t get it. They build these new, massive structures and they don’t consider potential use, emergency use, whatever. “Shut down”?

    (Here comes Grandpa’s rant…..) my fondest memories of growing up in Minnesota were watching the Vikings play in the worst imaginable weather. (Granted, I watched on TV, but 47,000 others chose to sit in the snow and ice and bitter cold, god love ’em. It made for compelling, joyful, dramatic football.

    Indoor football just doesn’t make sense to me.

    I wonder if “shut-down” for the season gets re-visited if the damage to the Metrodome’s roof can’t be fix by next Monday. It would be neat to see an outdoor Vikings home game

    Amazing. Took into the 3rd quarter for the Packers and Lions to score more points than the Giants and Vikings have scored today.

    —Ricko

    Let’s see, what are the chances a natural surface field in Minnesota gets “put to bed” for the Winter in a very special, very precise fashion?

    And maybe the restaurantes and concession stands get shut down. Fridges/Freezers emptied and defrosted, beverage lines cleared…possibly the plumbing, too. Luxury boxes closed up.

    I could go on. You don’t keep a stadium on 24-hour readiness the rest of year in case of some off-the-wall emergency. Makes no sense. Costs money, too.

    In other words, would be seriously bad management.

    A question:

    Only skimmed yesterday’s entry.
    Didn’t the Rochester Red Wings wear red and black during the Boog Years, not red and navy? And the stirrups were essentially the same as the Cardinals; red, but with black replacing navy.

    Loved Terry Proctor’s recollections of Game Seven 1960. I watched the last two innnings in sixth hour Phy Ed class. in the junior high (which had once been the senior high) where the basketball court doubled as the Auditorium stage. We walked in and, to our surprise, the curtains had been drawn and we all sat in the theater seating to watch the game, in black and white of course, projected on a huge screen. First time I’d ever seen that. TV like a movie. Amazing.

    Huge suprise. Memorable technology. And, of course, one of baseball’s most memorable home runs.

    All good.

    And a long, long time ago.

    @Peter Saunders – like the Pats ideas, I think the white jersey with silver pants looks very nice, surprising that they’ve never done it with the current set (to the best of my knowledge)

    I like the Pats tweaks simply because they correct a lot of what’s ugly with the current set. If those shoulder stripes weren’t there on the home jersey, I’d put red numbers in white trim. With the stripes, the white numbers compliment it nicely.

    Sorry, I wasn’t around at all yesterday, I was working a tournament and then had to drive home four hours to bet Blizzardaggedon 2010 (at least that is what I am calling it).

    Vilk, saw your comment about the MAC. Normally, I wouldn’t pick the MAC but Ohio is playing a Sun Belt team. I gotta believe MAC > Sun Belt.

    DeathStorm is a nice catch-all in this case, and not nearly as unwieldy as the alternatives.

    Last year’s big snowfall was called Snowmageddon by the Cleveland media.

    Hope the LA people aren’t salivating over the Metrodome’s problems, because if they think they have a superior location, their argument is on shaky ground…literally.

    Love Benkert’s take on the Bengals. Using less tiger stripe definitely does complement the helmet better. Not often you see an attempt a doing something with a side panel that looks alright.

    Oh great, another person referring to Michigan State as “Sparty”. That is the name of the mascot, not the team.

    Then they should be ashamed of themselves. “Sparties” is a derogatory name for MSU given by the walverine fans.

    Just made official: NYG/MIN will take place at Ford Field in Detroit tomorrow night. 7:20 p.m. ET kickoff.

    I assume that when something like this happens, there is no time or need to change end zone rugs?

    ESPN.com did report that about an hour after the game, the crew was already at work replacing the end zones.

    No, just stating facts. No one should be forced to watch a Lions game. This will be the first NFL game in Detroit featuring two NFL teams since Super Bowl XL.

    As for the end zone, I don’t know. I know they turned around from the MAC championship markings to the Lions marking between Friday night and Sunday morning.

    I hope they keep the Lions end zones. It would show that even the mighty NFL has to make do with what’s available sometimes.

    Tom Lewand of the Lions said they will do everything possible to make the Vikings feel at home. Whatever that means.

    Hey, the Lions actually managed a win! Sure, it took Aaron Rodgers getting knocked out before halftime with a concussion….

    “the Lions said they will do everything possible to make the Vikings feel at home.”

    you say that like it’s a good thing

    I wonder if this whole snow / roof collapse will have an effect on the Vikings and the city/state negotiating a new stadium.

    Pretty sure by tonight there will be more “move team to LA” talk….

    Metrodome lease is up after 2011 season, even though there may not BE a 2011 season.

    NFL owners, of course, would rather hold out for those insane expansion fees (which aren’t there in a franchise move), but they don’t seem to be forthcoming, and the Wilfs have been around long enough to now maybe get the votes to move.

    The roof collapse might get them another yay or two, too.

    —Ricko

    It still comes down to money, and who’s going to pay for the new stadium, and how much.

    Let it be a warning, that if they do build a new stadium in Minnesota, the ticket prices will go up a LOT.

    I’ve been following the general sports business & NFL stadiums, and it’s getting truly insane. That an 18-year old Georgia Dome “needs” replacing if it ever wants the chance to host another Super Bowl.

    You’re right, that’s insane. The NFL is so out of touch with reality anymore it’s laughable.

    I remember getting a tour of the Silverdome with my athletic training class after the Silverdome roof collapsed. The Pistons were playing there at the time.

    “Oh-ho, the roof’s got a hole in it,
    and I might drown.”

    Old song. Don’t know why I thought of it.

    Stuck with Jags-Raiders as a consequence of living in the SF Bay Area, but just thought I’d pass along that CBS’s intros of Jaguar players during their “Keys to the Game” introductory segment showed MJD and Garrard in the old Jags unis. Weird.

    Terry, Nice recollection of the 1960 game 7. I was in the 3rd grade and a Pirate fan. We got out of school and I was at a friends house who hated the Pirates. As soon as Maz hit the HR the kid turned the TV off in a second.

    Maybe its the soccer (or Jets) fan in me but I just realized how much I love the look of NFL teams with the team logo on the breast of jersey

    i.e Steelers, Jets…cant think of any others, hmmm

    My day went from bad: Shoveling crazy amounts of snow. To worse:
    link

    Not happy at all!

    Oh, and Phil, we generally say “Sconnie”… with two “n’s”. I’ll let it slide this time.

    Terry (and Ricko), loved hearing your recollections of 1960 Game 7. Wasn’t old enough for that one, but I’ll always remember where I was for the only other Series to end on a homer. I was putting together our new entertainment center when Joe Carter hit his shot off of Mitch Williams. I was looking down at my work when I heard the crack of the bat, so I didn’t see the swing. I did see the ball go over the fence, though. What a game…and of course that’s when the Jays looked as great as they played.

    “I feel fortunate to have been able to enjoy the World Series as I did in those days. Nowadays the night games get over very late, often when kids are in bed. I still believe that by watching or listening to the games in school in those days helped to cultivate more baseball fans. Not so today. Most kids today gravitate to football, which is predominately an afternoon sport. Do MLB leaders need a road map to figure this out?”

    Most excellent point, Mr. Proctor.

    The NFL since Pete Rozelle, has always been smarter than MLB, and the starting times for the playoffs are a good example. Everything from the economic system, merchandising, public relations(NFL Films), etc., has been handled better by the NFL. No surprise football has been the national pastime for nearly two decades now.

    Final three points about Game 7 of the 1960 World Series: First, baseball historians will tell you it’s one of the greatest games ever played in the history of the sport. Second, for a game in which there was something like 71 at bats, not one player from either side struck out.

    Third, we had someone on this board who recently asked a fair question about this game living up to the hype. If you’re 30 or younger, those perceptions are natural, even the 1993 Series is now 17 years old. MLB has done a poor job of educating fans about the history of the game, but I suggest checking out the MLB Network, if you can receive it.

    While the game winning home run is what most fans remember about this game, there was so much more that summed up the entire 1960 world series. There was also a very impressive array of talent on both sides, even though the Yankees were the heavy favorite.

    Nonsense about the NFL being smarter than baseball. If that were the case, the NFL would have revenues a lot bigger than baseball’s, but it doesn’t. All evidence I see points to the fact that baseball is the better run sport… bigger contracts for players, more merchandise sold, better media presence (MLB’s advanced productions are superior to NFL Films), etc. Baseball remains the national pastime; saying otherwise doesn’t make it so.

    And to suggest that MLB doesn’t educate its fans about history? If any sport CARES about its history, its baseball. I suggest most NFL fans today have never even heard of Gale Sayers or Jim Brown. At least baseball makes sure fans remember its stars of the 1960s.

    Gotta disagree with you, I can’t recall the last time I heard was called the national baseball pastime.Revenues aren’t really the true indicator of a sport’s popularity. TV ratings are far more important, and the NFL has been killing MLB for years in that department.

    Having bigger contracts for some players in MLB only means some average players get rewarded for their performance. Don’t know who sells more merchandise, but NFL Films has been winning Emmy awards long before MLB finally woke up and finally improved the quality of their productions. Ken Burns doesn’t work for MLB, where are all the team history productions from MLB?

    I didn’t say MLB doesn’t care about it’s history, they’re just doing a substandard job. Thanks to NFL Films, at least some younger football fans have heard of players like Sayers and Brown. Younger baseball fans are fewer, and struggle to name the stars from the past.

    The NFL costs much more to run per game, what with their being so many more players and staff, more equipment, etc. I’d think the NFL crushes MLB in per game revenue. IF the MLB makes less than the NFL while having ten times as many games, then I’d say the NFL has been at least a little bit smarter than MLB over the years.

    Apples and oranges. Tickets for eight games are much scarcer than tickets for 81, which makes it easier to charge more, have larger capacity, etc. My impression is that football’s more popular right now, but that may be affected by the local ballclub’s eighteen-year-and-counting losing streak.

    Looking at the tears in the roof in the video, has there been any kind of statement if the Vikings will be able to play any more games in the dome this season?

    That kind of fix cannot be quick, can it?

    I don’t think so. It might even convince Wilf to move to LA now. Or, convince everyone else that Minnesota can’t afford a new stadium (since the Metro has been around longer than Brett Favre).

    Also, this isn’t the first time the Metrodome apparently collapsed. It has happened five times before, since it is fiberglass supported by air pressure (link). This might just help Wilf to get a new Dome.

    Maybe I missed it from yesterday’s comments, but no uni-love for the Army v. Navy tilt yesterday?

    link

    Navy’s jersys caught my eye in a good way.

    I was going to give them an honorable mention today…even brifely flirted with the idea of putting them in the Top 5.

    I like Navy’s red as a nod to the Marines. It also keeps Navy from looking like ND. I’d like to see them wear those road unis all the time.

    it might not be an ultimate prize or anything like that, but i will send the bowl-pool winner a pair of uw stirrups independent of phil incase there is some sort of question with who knows what authority. so there is that. just don’t mention it in a post phil, and i will say something again in the comments on the day it is decided, because whomever wins will post for sure about their victory, and you won’t get in trouble.

    i love the colourization stuff, that is a nice addition to the sunday paper. i love it all, but great job dylan.

    really mothersunbowlker? penn state is the only big ten team, and it isn’t even against the big ten? let’s just say i ain’t surprised. at the very least, how can a michigan home game not make the list? i love ya jim, but that’s a fail.

    oh phil, what a great post, way to give it your all on this snow day. when i make it out to nyc this winter, i am going to kiss you deeply, and you will awkwardly love it. or maybe i will just sing you the first song on link clip of 3.

    tod, michigan man or michigan fan? if it is the later all i can say is what i said to michigan “fans” back in the day when THE lost to them, not you every year…how bout those chippewas?! but if you are a michigan man, may i say that i can not wait until you get better, and you will, all this is a cycle, don’t let the fact that you are down make it so that you hate on the state south, and spite your conference. deep down we are brothers my friend, except the third saturday of november where you are my mortal enemy to be squashed like a bug. suuuuure, i may tease you for app-state, and point out that you can’t teach your kids to tackle, but you are a powerhouse, a sleeping giant, keep your head up, and beat mississippi state for the big ten.

    on wisconsin!

    Thought about OSU/Iowa, but since I didn’t go there, I thought I wasn’t qualified to comment on them. ;)

    On TCU!

    you can comment, you just can’t take pride in beating them until the zips play football. and even as an ohio state grad, michigan hosting wisconsin was the big ten game of the year, holding black socks against the game was tom petty, at the time, i just didn’t call you on it. link.

    It was Northwestern/Wisconsin I held back because of black socks. TCU/New Mexico was a worthy replacement.

    And I doubt the Zips will ever play football…unless they go back to 1-AA.

    there is no shame in the oac, own it.

    um, okay, then what was your excuse on scUM-sconnie, i thought it was socks. it was a classic matchup, maybe if you said motion w that points backward, but you didn’t. why did that not crack the top 5? you gave some love to the iowa pittsburghs(shock), but very little to the big ten this year. i am just having what team is better bowl debate uw style. so what’s your stance, why isn’t there a big ten match-up?

    Problem with a Big Ten matchup is when they play each other, so does the SEC. Plus, some of the better-looking matchups are next year (barring any uni downgrades, of course). The Big Ten got more love last year, but not all matchups look as good when you switch from homes to roads.

    Oh, and Wisconsin/Michigan suffered from being played on the best-looking weeekend in college football. I woulda put them at #10, but Miami had to come out with those wonderful Toy Combat unis then.

    Because it’s Sunday and I have time…
    I went through all the old lists. OSU made it a few times against non-conference teams, so did some others, but when it came to conference season, the highest-rated Big Ten matchups were Wisc./Purdue link and Wisc./Iowa. link

    THE didn’t make the list this year. maaaybe one non-con, as a 5. and really, they shouldn’t have, osu didn’t have a top 5 all year, but you can count on an arthritic hand caught in a vice all your big ten choices, and thaaaaat’s pretty much what i thought. call it the best sec and 1, stupid east coast bias screwin’ the little man, we need a playoff. it is just sour grapes jim, i lost huuuuge on the 5-1 bets this year. non the less, you went out of your way to snub the big ten, which is fine, who caes, but also evident. black socks, deny it.

    You sound like a Boise fan complaining about biases…

    OSU made it more than once. I looked, but if you don’t believe me, go through each list yourself because I have a life and I’m not doing it twice in one day. One of the times was when Paul didn’t run it, but it was in the comments section (Sept. 5th edition) and it counts. That wasn’t their only appearance, either.

    You act as if the SEC is my favorite conference. It isn’t. I may think it’s the best, and the best looking, but I don’t root for any of the teams. I root for Penn State, who if I recall, made it as often as Ohio State did. I root for Pitt, whose only appearance was an &1 selection for wearing the Toy Combat unis. I sort of like Michigan, but I don’t like their road unis, which is the only reason the UM/OSU game didn’t make the Top 5. The fact that Iowa State came out with a fantastic new uniform this season is why the Big Ten got knocked out of a few lists. I don’t root for them, either, but I loved that uniform.

    You want to cry bias? Go do it to someone else because I’m not listening. I can’t stand Miami and I’m not fond of Notre Dame, but if the Irish wear green and the Canes wear the orange Toy Combat unis in the Sun Bowl, you bet that goes in my Top 5 bowl list.

    I don’t go out of my way to screw anybody. I pick what matchups look nice to me – nothing more, nothing less. You lost out because you placed a bet on what the Uni Watch village idiot thinks is a good looking ball game? Whose problem is that? That’s yours, not the idiot’s.

    He has bias its Temple every week. They made it more than any other team. Those pants look horrible but Vilk keeps putting them in.

    Check your facts, sir.

    Not counting the best-of list, I put Temple in the Top 5 only three times. Just one more than Ohio State.

    Plus, it’s not a bias if I like how they look. That’s the whole point of the list, after all. It would be a bias if I liked another uniform better, but put Temple in ahead of them just to screw with someone. I don’t do that, but apparently you and Robert think I do. You would be wrong.

    sorry my friend, had to say it, especially since you could have chosen the spartans. i love saginaw, my dad was a dow man, i lived down the road in midland 3 times in my life.

    No problem. I applied to Michigan but got more money to go to Saginaw to work with the football team. I think the reason I am a Michigan fan is when I was a kid you could not watch State on TV as they were on probation and you could see Michigan three times a year. That is probably what swayed me to Michigan.

    As for State, I just couldn’t pick them as I think Saban is going to try to drub State.

    well there is picking your conference, and there is crazy. but i wouldn’t put it past danny, he is a good coach, and sparty is happy to play the tide while bama miiiight not be to stoked about the olde tangerine bowl. take sparty and the points, bama for the win.

    by the way, don’t get me wrong, i understand being a fan of, i was mostly playing around. that being said, i hope everybody who is not one of the living or dead 600,000+ people who earned a degree from o-state, hate o-state, and that includes all the people in ohio who take pride in THE’s victory for no legit reason. but it is bowl season, so don’t get me wrong, go big ten.

    No problem, If I were making my pick with the points I would have took State but I was just making straight picks. I have had years where I picked all Big Ten schools and they went 1-6.

    i dig. again, you can’t take them all, but who thought we would be so good last year? the problem, we always play on the road, a southern team in the south, a western team out west. but that is okay, i like sparty against the houndstooths.

    that’s an official tell on champ-chimp skip, make sure you take bama. you now know two picks to oppo, or if you-re scared, to not oppo.

    “Michigan fan. Saginaw Valley man.”

    you keep tossin’ those no hitters in sodapop valley

    It’s one thing when comapanies started putting their name in front of bowl games…but the Ticket City Bowl? The Fight Hunger Bowl? At least that one is for a good cause, but still…

    The only thing worse than naming your web site godaddy.com is naming your bowl after it. Makes the GMAC Bowl sound almost charming and old-fashioned in comparison.

    Can’t Hershey or Mars come out with the Candy Bowl? Can’t Frito Lay or Planters come out with the Snack Bowl? Kellogg’s can’t do the Cereal Bowl? C’mon, someone out there sponsor a bowl and give it a decent name.

    Kind of going in reverse, but I always kind of liked the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl for that reason. Have a fiesta, get tortilla chips, likely Tostitos. Always made sense to me.

    I remember when Sunkist sponsored the Fiesta Bowl. They should have sponsored the Orange Bowl, eh?

    they sponsored wisely, you have to give them that, but it is no sun or bluebonnet bowl. sheeeet, salad bowl, that is awesome, i remember coming across that a few years ago. pineapple has been out there recuiting for kcai all week, think i could get her to go thrifting for old salad bowl tee shirts before she flies back tonight?

    I miss the Tangerine Bowl and the Peach Bowl. I really miss the Blue-Gray game on Christmas Day. My dad and I use to watch that game and try to figure out what school the helmets belonged to. Then they messed that up by trading decals and sticking them all over their helmets. Then on Christmas night would get to watch the Aloha Bowl.

    I miss the old days.

    Oh… And get the hell of my lawn.

    i could kiss you! damn straight, the blue-gray game. sure it was a cold gray day in mobile, but that game was great. you would sit there in your slippers with your little brother in a headlock, your old man smashing you on the head with his new ratchet set telling you to leave him alone as your mom burnt the ham in the kitchen and called it cajun. and if you team stunk, and wasn’t going bowling, maybe the crappy senior from a crappy class could plaster 30 stickers on his helmet and tackle some jerk from alcorn state. blue-gray memories, priceless.

    Then you could name a bowl after what it’s made of. There used to be a Copper Bowl…why can’t Corning sponsor the Ceramic Bowl? Wonder Bread could sponsor the Bread Bowl and USX or Alcoa could sponsor the Metal Bowl.

    sounds like our christmas days were not the same, except the electronic football part that neither of us mentioned.

    the best bowl game was the one on one george rogers-curtis dickey snow bowl in the back yard with your brother where the extree point was betwixt the trees.

    We use to do that other days. My dad worked three jobs and if it didn’t snow Christmas was on of the few days we could watch football together.

    We had the extra point between the trees, electronic football and table top hockey.

    There was the Cam-Am Bowl at Tampa Stadium in the 1970s, which pitted Canadian versus American college players. I don’t know if these few games were ever televised.

    rpm, the other great thing about the Blue-Gray is you would see players from teams that never got on TV back then. How many times was Wyoming, Colorado State or Rice on TV back then.

    hats off to mike benkert. amazing what a few small changes can do to make a travesty into a nice-looking, consistent set of unis. well done!

    I went to the hockey game at Michigan Stadium yesterday. Despite what photos from the upper reaches of the bowl look like, the visibility was very good. It’s really tough to tell with a photo, but even from row 75, it looks like you are on top of the field/rink in that joint, at least to me. Great place to watch a game.

    It was a world record for hockey attendance, and a Michigan Stadium record for any event. The only small crisis happened during the second period/intermission, when many concessions on the south end ran out of hot chocolate.

    The new lighting system looked good as well. most of the fans are left in the dark, but the field is lit very well, considering how few lights there are.

    Nice to see that it went well. I’m glad we didn’t get the kind of snow yesterday that we got today (wet and slushy this morning), let alone what the Twin Cities got.

    It was only a few hundred more fans than the UConn football game from earlier this year (the football record). I would expect the Ohio State game to come close, or at least set the football record, next season.

    I have this 1990 Giants media guide I would be happy to give to someone who wants it. Give me an address and I will send it to you. If you want to send me the cost of postage back, that will be accepted. Reply to this and I will send you an image of the cover.

    you know what would be great?

    would you like to offer it to the winner of the UW NCAA Bowl Pool?

    shoot me an email and if you’re willing to offer it up, i’ll cover the postage

    SOOO this’ll be fun, two teams playing on sort of neutral ground with a third team’s logos everywhere.

    … I can already see the special piece UniWatch does on this NYG-MIN game in 2025

    that’s funny. that’s a reto crack right? uw doesn’t give you both a look at olde uni finds and what is happening today? i thought it did, but maybe i am reading something else every day. maybe we should just direct feed you video game triumphs or fantasy team standings so we can keep up on the reeeeally important happenings of sunday december 12, 2010. good golly.

    AAAAND what do you propose they do? if you are going to rip the nfl for playing a game that can’t be played somewhere else, at least offer an alternate solution. what would that be commissioner johnj?

    I think you may have sensed sarcasm where there was none. I was trying to say that it will be a unique game, the type of game that uniwatch would look back on years from now.

    Easy, Moose. Santa’s watching. Or Corny Cornelison or whoever it is that brings you presents on Cornsmas.

    okay, just back from the airport, so i have time to do this right. i am soo sorry johnj, i totally misread you, wasn’t my day, i feel real bad about that one. as i sort of referred to in the above, i had just gotten home from sliding through an intersection betwixt two cars, got pretty lucky, then saw what you wrote, and didn’t read for the sarcasm, and lashed. anyway, please accept my apologies for that, i totally owe you one if there is ever anything i can do for you.

    hey no worries rpm haha the internet has the tendency to make you think everyones a snarky sarcastic 13 yr old so i know where youre coming from, especially on a bad day like that.

    …i guess my initial post is a little incorrect though now that we know theyre removing the lions logos huh? minor bummer, still gonna be neat

    Seriously, folks…was gonna ask why would simply removing the endzone graphics at Ford Field be so tough? One of the easier tasks in such logistics, actually, and would leave them with, at worst, generic endzones.

    That would so horrible under the odd circumstances of the Giants-Vikings game?

    —Ricko

    Ford Field has changed the field logos several times in the past few weeks, because of the high-school football finals and the MAC championship game. It’s not a big deal for them to change it for the Vikings, other than the lack of purple paint.

    According to another tweet I just got the Vikings logo will be all white since Ford Field has no purple paint in stock.

    you say that like it’s a oh…nevermind

    will be an interesting game for sure

    if favre plays, do the giants end his career?

    More intriguing…

    If there is no 2011 season, and the Vikings were to move in the interim…have we already seen the last Viking game ever at the Dome?

    Or, if they miss the playoffs (kinda likely) the last Viking game in Minnesota?

    —Ricko

    ahh yes, youre right… my bad, i had assumed that most teams with field turf didnt paint on their logos

    pretty weird, kind cool… im gonna guess thats a high school team? (basing this off the lack of fans, TNOB and rip off helmet logo)

    Went through the unis of the bowl teams and here is the manufacturer breakdown(plus one somewhere I lost track and missed one team and I’m not going bak through that again)
    Nike 44
    Adidas 15
    Under Armor 8
    Russell Athletic 2

    not that it matters but the whole Nike vs Under Armor or Adidas for that matter is sort of a pointless argument based on the sheer number dominance of the bowl teams.

    nike is sponsoring it next year

    wait for it…

    —Ricko

    The reason why Michigan’s helmet maize doesn’t match the jersey maize is because adidas uses a goofy maize to start with, and the helmet wings are actually yellow tape. The helmets are retaped a few times a year (by hand) because helmet manufacturers don’t allow painting on the helmet under conditions of the warranty. Supposedly the cold of the ice and the physical nature of hockey causes paint to chip as well, and it’s bad when inhaled.

    Or so the Director of Hockey Operations at Michigan told me a few years back.

    Naw, it’s yellow tape. I went to UofM and knew one of the hockey student managers. The football wings won’t fit right on the hockey lids, so a bunch of student managers and equipment guys do the taping for the hockey helmets

    Auburn’s uniform is blue and orange, after all. You put that together and you get bore-ange. And that’s what it is. Boring. Go with the dynamic Ducks. Whatever they wear out there in Glendale will be crap-your-pants-caliber badass.

    But still, man. But still. Auburn’s navy blue and dark orange combo really doesn’t do much for me. Either the orange needs to pop more or the blue does. It just looks a little drab — like it’s missing a little Lightning or something to give it a spark.

    As great as this blog typically is, I can’t understand the hate for purple or many of Vilker’s choices for 5&1. LSU’s unis are way overrated and just another example of Vilker’s continued appreciation of some horrible unis. I hope Uniblog adds some other CFB 5&1 reviewers next season! Maybe a poll for the masses!

    If you’re willing to sit through looking at photos of every game and objectively picking what looks good to you instead of picking some school you like every week just because you think I slighted them, have at it. Actually, I’d like to see someone else’s unbiased perspective, too.

    Just a bit of an FYI….in the A&M/LSU matchup….A&M changed uniform tops mid-season….the bottom middle and bottom right photo in the collage you used are the ones we started the season with and the ones on the top row are the more current ones (adidas went with a different material, a tighter stretchier fit, and made the TEXAS A&M font smaller) – if you see a picture closer up I think it looks much cleaner
