Letter Grading The NCAA (FBS) BCS Conferences

ncaa fbs bsc hed

By Phil Hecken with Jim Vilk

At Uni Watch, aside from our love of uniforms, we like to critique them, tweak them, discuss them, and even make them. With the College Football Season now in full swing, I’m joined by Mr. “5 & 1” himself, Jim Vilk, who often finds himself at odds with many of us in his sartorial sense, for our attempt to ascertain just which NCAA FBS (that’s the old Division 1-A) conference has the best uniforms. And you’re going to choose, too.

Jim and I will be grading each team from each conference (we’ll start with the automatic BCS qualifying conferences now), and then pronounce an overall grade for that conference. You can use our individual grades as a guide for each team in the conference. Once we’ve finished that, we’re going to follow it up with a poll.

Here’s how Jim sees it:

“Every year, college football fans get into the same debate: who’s the number one team in the land? Of course, the BCS system has taken SOME of the meat out of that discussion, but another conversation is going stronger than ever: which conference is number one? What we’re going to do is take that discussion and tweak it a bit to involve the uniforms.

“Next to each team you will see my grade, followed by Phil’s. Suprisingly, our grades are pretty similar so far, with Phil being just a little more strict. I sort of graded on a curve, though, so today’s list and the next one will include one failing grade apiece.”

After that, we’ll each give you our own tweaked 5 & 1, and our next poll, which immediately follows the 5 & 1. Don’t forget to vote!

OK then, now that you’ve seen the unis and our grades, here’s the meat and potatoes:

Jim’s Five & One (his best looking five home uniforms and one worst):

5. Michigan — Gotta love that helmet.

4. Alabama — Basically the same as Oklahoma, but I gave ‘Bama the nod for sticking with helmet numbers.

3. Ole Miss — Script logo, great striping and the blue/red helmet/jersey combo add up to a winner.

2. Penn State — Fifty years from now, I hope JoePa and these unis are still going strong.

1. LSU — I don’t really root for them, but I could watch them every week.

And, of course, my worst uniform: Oregon — Topping the list of reasons: worst number font ever.

And mine:

5. Oklahoma — I can’t stand “Boomer Sooner” but the unis are O-K with me.

4. Auburn — Ever to conquer — never to yield.

3. Texas — We may not freestyle Texas Fight…but yea orange…yea white.

2. Penn State — Hit the line, roll up the score…JoePa will coach 20 years more.

1. Alabama — I heard Mr. Young sing about her.

And my WORST uni: Mizzou — Don’t send my boy to Kansas.

OK, folks. That’s what Jim and I think of the BCS conferences. But we’re only two votes. You guys will now have the ultimate say. So, naturally, I’ve contacted the UW Pollster, Jimbo Huening to set us up. You can use any methodology for reaching your grade. Take your time, be methodical, or just give it your best college try. Just be sure you fill in the little circle completely, or the scanner can’t read your vote. You’ll be asked six quick questions (grade each conference) and then you’ll be asked for your OVERALL favorite uniform for one team. Once you complete that, come on back and give us your own personal “5 & 1” in the comments. OK? OK!

all sport uni tweaks

Still have a backlog of uni tweaks, so let get right into it. If you have a tweak, change or concept for any sport, send them my way. OK? OK! Here’s what’s on tap for today.

Those who’ve already sent in tweaks, they’re fine the way they are, but in the future, because many of you seem to enjoy elaborate write ups, can you possibly try to keep them to 50 words tops per team? Thanks!

~~~
Starting off the show is Tim Wharton who has tweaks for the Vols, the Pokes & the Titans:
Hi Phil and Uniwatch,
Love the site. Here are some tweaks of mine (attached). Thanks for the link for me to waste my time on this. I’m hooked now.
I live in Nashville. I’m not particularly a Titans fan, but I tweaked their unis because they are quite ugly and have pretty much always been since moving here. I’ve included UT Vols tweaks ’cause I hate the black they use, although it’s spread to the basketball team now. I like brown instead of black so they don’t look like Ok. State or Oregon St. I’ve also included the light blue as a trim color that they used to have on the basketball unis and still use for the Lady Vols. Lastly, THE COWBOYS. I have read your comments on the different shades of blue they use. I agree except when you start tweaking the unis you realize you need those different shades to make it work. anyway, for them no change on the home whites (I didn’t include). No real change on the (occasional) road blues (I didn’t include), except maybe for the numbers. I have included the alts I tweaked. Home and Away or the ‘special game’.
VOLUNTEERS: Home Alt; Away; Away Alt.
TITANS: Home; Home Alt; Away; Away Alt.
COWBOYS: Home or Away Alt; Home Alt Special.
Keep it rockin’
Tim
Next up is Jeff Martin, who has a couple tweaks, and a LOT of explanation:
Hi Phil,
Have been a Uniwatch fan for a while now and love the Uni-Tweaks so I thought I’d send you some of my ideas. I’m a big fan of the sleeveless vest jerseys. So I came up with what I would do with current uniforms and also threw in a couple of alternates if they had the “vest look”
Here are the first of my creations starting with the National League East…
I grew up a Mets fan so I figured I’d start with them.
I went pretty basic with the home and away jerseys but insisted on the pinstripes for the home jersey. Alternate 1, I thought the NY logo would look great on the crest and I liked the way this came out. Alternate 2, I used the Mets script in white with the orange trim… (They had a batting practice jersey with this look in the 80’s similar to this.)
The Cap tweaks – my idea came from my HS baseball cap from wayyyyyy back in the mid 1970’s. We had white bills with the white button and white eyelates on Garnet, (maroon).
I went with white bills for the Home uni’s and Gray bills for the away uni’s. I think this gives the caps a “classy look”.
2 notes of interest – There is no BFBS on my tweaks and all have STIRRUPS, which is how baseball uniforms were meant to look.
Mets Concepts.
Next up with my Uni Tweaks – The Phillies…
Pretty much the same deal as I did with the Mets with the home and away.. Stayed basic and kept it simple. For the Alternate 1 tho, I took a 1947 Phillies uniform and basically removed the sleeves and gave it a blue undershirt. The cap is the one worn in 1947 as are the stirrups. No reason to tinker with either the cap or stirrups cos I think they’re perfect.
I had a little fun with Alternate 2 (&3). I was feeling a little 70’s retro and did up the 70’s uniforms as sleeveless. The caps are my personal signature white bills with white button on top for Home and gray for the Away cap. I got positive responses from the Phillies Phans here at the Jersey Shore on Alternate Cap 2.
Phillies Concepts
Here are my Braves Tweaks…..
The Braves are a natural for sleeveless…. The away grays look real good with the navy blue undershirt. For the Alternates – I took the “Tomahawk A” from their alternate cap and put it on the crest. (kind of an Oakland A’s-ish from the late 60’s effect). Some of my uni’s have the numbers on the opposite side of the logos, some don’t. I’m still trying to figure which I like best – with or without numbers…
The Braves caps tweaks – I wasn’t too sure of. But, my 22 year old son, a devout Braves fan all his life, loved them so I guess it’s thumbs up for those… Yes, a Mets fan and Braves fan in the same house… It gets better – his girlfriend is a Phillies fan!
Braves Concepts
Time for the Marlins……
I always liked their first season uniforms and I’m fortunate enough to have gotten one the year they came out. I even got the rare “Carl” patch on the undershirt, in memory of the Marlins first President, Carl Barger who passed away at the 1992 Winter Meetings, just months before the Marlins played their first game.
So I went with the teal pinstripes and teal sleeves for the home uni and gray with the teal sleeves for the away. I think the teal sleeves is a fresher look. I did go with black stirrups altho I battled myself to stay away from the teal stirrups. I guess I could throw in a teal stripe on the stirrups. But would that be Teal for Teal Sake?!?!?
For alternates 1 and 2, I took the “Marlin F” logo from the caps and put it on the crest. It makes a nice crest logo. I guess I’m a little guilty of BFBS on Alternate 2 – note the black sleeves and black bill and button of the cap altho I believe this was the cap they used in their first year or two of existance..
Had a little extra creativity that day and did up Alternates 3 & 4. Alt 3 is pure Black for Black Sake and I guess is worthy of the black billed cap from Alt 2. Alt 4 is basically away gray with the “Marlin F” logo on the crest. With the gray billed cap – it’s really a nice look.
Also included the Cap Tweaks. I’m curious whether people like the white or gray better on the bills of the caps.
Marlins Concepts; Carl Patch; Marlins Jersey.
…and last but certainly not least….
The Washington Nationals……. Formerly the Montreal Expos…..
I went with the red for the sleeves and cap of the home jersey, (white bill and button of course on the cap.) I went with their navy for the sleeves and cap for the away jersey. The DC on the red sleeves is on white while the DC on the blue sleeves is in red…
Now for the alternates…. I always had a soft spot for the Expos. Maybe it was seeing those great (IMHO) red, white and blue caps on opening day 1969 vs. the Mets. Plus all the talent they grew and developed and gave away to all the other MLB teams – I’ve always had a soft spot for them. So it was a natural for me to pay homage to them with my alternates. Actually, if I owned the Nats – this is what our uniforms would look like. (No disrespect to the Nat’s Curly Dubya”.)
I just flipped over the expos “M” (which also has an “E” and a “B” for Montreal Expos Baseball) and made it a “W”. I have to admit – it was fun Photoshopping that…. Used an old Expos uni from the 70’s and replaced “expos” with “nats” underneath the new found “W”. I tinkered with the idea of changing colors but hey, red, white and blue! How could I change that!?!?!? I tried it with the blue scheme (sleeves, stirrups) and the red scheme. I think I like the original blue scheme better.
Well, that’s my National League East tweaks….. Gonna get to work soon on the NL Central… Hope you enjoyed.
Nationals Concepts.
That’s all for today. Again, I never want to censor or cut down on the number of words you folks use, but if at all possible, can we keep the descriptions down to say…50 words or less per team? Thanks. Back next time with more.
Missives From Ben
~~~

It’s been almost two months since Bootheel Ben Traxel has annoyed me. But in between, he did grace us with some wonderful lookbacks at the old Kansas City Municipal Stadium, so I guess I can cut him some slack. Well, the party’s over. Here’s Ben:

~~~
• Baseball card of the week: Dressed to the Nines has no record of these Pirates Unis.
~~~

Venue of the week: Anaheim Convention Center. Briefly home of the Anaheim Amigos of the ABA. Not those Amigos. Perhaps the move was due to the number of fans in the place? Anyway, during the riots in LA a few moons ago it also held a playoff game or two. Love those modern molded forms. Kinda has a Candela feel.

Other stadiumesess that have eye catching interest…

• The very loud and large Husky Stadium is mostly going away soon to a complete remodel, (whatever $250 million buys). Something architecturally bazaar about that place.

• London’s Olympic spaceship is going up. I think I like the birdsnest better. The Olympics just bring me down anyway. I just can’t stand two solid weeks of nothing but gymnastics, bookended by happy cheery evening festivals.

~~~
• Sorry. Old time basketball uniforms just look creepy. Give me the willies. Always have, always will.
Nobody should wear this. Ever:
• Sorry Boston. That’s just wrong.
Basketball pants?
Basketball belts?
• A little, shall we say, friendly?
• A little better, interesting design.
• My money’s on these guys. Anywhere, anytime.
• If the coach were alive they might have a chance.
~~~

• I have no story for this, but I love it.

• Ever wonder what team these guys were on?

• Was this ripped off this or this?

• The Notre Dame bookstore has football pins for every game this season.

~~~
• Okay. These football shirt tails have been bothering me for too long now. I cannot stand it when these guys go three quarters of the game with their ragged tail dangling in the breeze when they act like it has to be shrink wrapped to begin with. It just looks crappy sloppy. There are other options out there but I can’t imagine they are all that comfy. There are different types of jersey tails. The “half moon over the moon” is quite popular. There is the “nail pouch” look. And lets not forget the “cover your ass”. Once upon a time it wasn’t a problem. I kind of liked the half jersey option. Now it did come with other issues. But I say bring it back. And let’s start looking a little snappier. Here’s a good side by side example.
~~~

That’s enough for now. No complaints accepted. That means you LI Fill.

~~~
Well, I have nothing to say then.
Ben will be back may return soon at some later date with more ramblings and other assorted quips and quibbles.
~~~~~~~~~~

OK folks, that’s all for today. It’s a college football Saturday on UW, and the highlight game is definitely going to be Iowa vs. Ball State. “What?” you say. Well, it’s the game to watch because Iowa will be partying like it’s 1958. Those are the throwbacks they’ll be wearing today to celebrate Randy Duncan’s 1958 squad, a team which was arguably the greatest team in Iowa history. That year, the Hawkeyes won both the Big Ten title and the Rose Bowl, and were voted #1 in the Football Writers poll. Before the geniuses who came up with the BCS nonsense, that was one measure of your #1 status in college football.

Enjoy the games today, and try to get yourself in front of a tube for the Iowa game.

    LSU as the best and the SEC as the best dressed conference? Does ESPN’s fat contract mandate you gush all over them? ;)

    I have no idea how LSU is 5 + 1’s best. Purple and yellow are okay, but the helmet is awful. LSU in block over a tiny tiger?

    The SEC does have some classic unis (Bama, Auburn, UGA) but it also has some awful ones (UT’s cremesicle orange, UF’S cartoon character helmet and LSU per above)

    For what it’s worth I am a fan of Michigan’s, UCLA’s, USC’s and Florida State’s unis. The Seminole’s helmet is also the best IMHO.

    None of the ESPN money gets filtered down to me, so that’s a free endorsement of LSU and the SEC. I’m a Penn State/Big East fan, but I not only admit the SEC is the best conference, they look the part as well.

    As for the helmets, they have a college look to them. Block or script score high for me when it comes to the NCAA. If this were the NFL, I may have graded them differently.

    You guys and your A+’s for Penn State are lame. At the very least, they need a stripe on the pants. Putting their logo someplace would be nice too – doesn’t have to be on the helmet, make it a jersey patch like the Jets or Steelers have. They have this really nice oval/lion logo… and they don’t even use it anywhere. What the hell? There’s “clean, conservative design” and there’s “we got our uniforms off the shelf at the local sporting goods store”.

    My vote for best uniform probably goes to LSU or Wisconsin, with an honorable mention for Virginia if they’d change the pant striping a bit. I really like the idea of the orange jerseys with the navy helmet & pants though.

    I could go for a pants stripe, but if you’re going to put anything on a PSU helmet, let it be the numbers.

    Virginia would have been an A if it wasn’t for the butt stripes and lettering.

    I could even see the lion logo going on the pants, but if you put it on the helmet, then you’re just going to look like North Alabama:
    link

    OK, A++ is an asinine grade, but I can kinda understand it. But WTF is a B++, Jim?

    And Black Coffee & Bourbon: Does ESPN’s fat contract mandate you gush all over them?
    Thanks for giving me a good laugh to start my (very short) weekend.

    That was because, although Pitt looks very good, I can’t give them anything in the A range until they bring back the script Pitt helmets.

    No Notre Dame? Seriously? Sure they are not in a conference but excluding them is like excluding Barry Melrose from a best mullet poll. It’s just not right.

    “No Notre Dame? … Sure they are not in a conference”

    i believe you answered your own question

    Penn State could a stripe on their pants.

    LSU, Ohio State, and Auburn need to sync up their helmet and pants stripes.

    I’m from Mizzouri, and they are the AZ Cardinals of college football. Wiggity wiggity wack y’all.

    I don’t know if anybody noticed, but Iowa’s uniform looks a lot like the Steelers.

    Penn State did have a stripe on their pants I believe in the 1960s. In the 60s and part of the 70s, Penn State also had player numbers on the helmet.

    Auburn needs to return to the orange face masks of the Bo Jackson era.

    Iowa is long overdue to establish their own identity, and alter their unis.

    South Carolina needs to return to the red helmets and uniform from the 1980s.

    Not exactly. The relative thickness of the black striping is much higher on the pants than it is on the helmets or jersey.

    Much better than it was in 05…though I liked the old sleeve stripes better. It pains me to watch SMU with that pattern.

    The baseball card of the week is a total mess. It from Topps’ 1969 set, but the picture was taken at the Polo Grounds when Cannizzaro was with the Mets in 1962-1963. Thank you Topps for putting a six year old picture on a card, and then doing an ugly air-brush job on the hat. The 1969 set actually has at least four cards with pictures taken at the Polo Grounds.

    Even as a kid, I loathed some of Topp’s airbrushing jobs. I was, if I may say so, a fairly accomplished graphics student for my age- and I always thought they looked like garbage. If you went from the Reds to the Phils, or the Yanks to the Tigers, theye might be passable.

    But when someone went from the Padres to ANYwhere- ack.

    Holy crap! the first section looked as if somebody barfed up a keyboard. BCS= Bull Crap System

    Liked Jeff martin’s METS ( H/A & the alt1) & PHILS
    (H/A regs more than retro alts)tweaks. He seems a bit in love w/white & gray bills. Don’t think whites would fly. But I like the grays.

    Phil-That Celtic player was a member of the “Original” NEW YORK CELTICS-so in no way would a New Yawk team ever be connected with a Bahston club.

    I’m surprised by Auburn’s inclusion in your 5 best, Phil. Not because it’s a bad uniform (it’s great), but because their official colors are something more daring than X + white.

    Also, Penn State got a better grade than Micigan? Is it because Mich’s second color is maize, not white? VERY similar jerseys, Identical pants (just different colors), the major difference is the yellow and the helmet. The Wolverines’ helmets are the greatest in sports, I think that makes up for using yellow instead of white.

    I scored PSU higher because they go without names on the back. The maize had nothing to do with the lower ranking; I love Michigan’s use of it.

    I know LSU has names on the back, but man, those stripes make up for it.

    I’m going to be way off the reservation here because of my personal likes and dislikes, but here’s a BCS five-and-one:

    5. FSU
    4. Virginia
    3. Vandy
    2. Texas
    1. North Carolina

    worst – Thug U, with dishonorable mention to Boston College (talk about bad numbers!).

    Stanford got an A??? Despite their new BLACK uniforms?

    link

    Oh yeah, for a team that’s named after a color, that move to black”earns” an A. :o(

    I think the poll is on the home uniform only, not the away or any alternates, so the BFBS has no bearing on this discussion.

    I have an idea how to solve the stirrup problem. Make the pants with the stirrups sewn in, all at the same spot, just above the top stripe. The loop should be of thin, slightly elastic material and form fitting to the foot’s arch so as to be very comfortable. Then uniforms would be uniform again.

    Stanford’s uni wasn’t judged by the black jersey, but the red one.

    And please, please, please no belly shirts again for football. That has to be THE worst look for the sport of all time, worse than the way too tight jerseys coming out now.

    I guess NC State didn’t want to wear red on the road. The gold is ok though, especially if it brings a win with it.

    That rule is so god damned stupid. The road team should not be able to dictate the home team’s uniform. Period.

    Not only that, but it was supposed to be the “White Out” game for Georgia Tech… and the Wolfpack are the ones wearing head-to-toe white.

    Very dumb.

    Did anyone else besides me realize that Georgia Tech was wearing last year’s design, both pants and jersey?

    *a…hem*

    thanks larry

    j/k

    the jimmy v. fund definitely did the heavy lifting on this one

    I was not aware Husky Stadium would be remodeled. I was out there a few years back when Ohio State played. It does not look like it would be loud but it was.

    Wonder how it will look when done?

    On those baseball tweaks… somebody sure like sleeveless jerseys & lightly colored cap brims. They kind of lose their originality when they all follow the same basic idea & template. Personally I don’t think teams need more than one alternate; less is more. Honestly anytime you flip any logo or design upsidedown, it seems like a sign of disrespect.

    **Georgia Tech is recycling the gold jerseys from last year vs. NC State.**

    I guess that solved Russell Athletic’s problem of having to come up with an alternate gold jersey to substitute for their current home white set.

    No good games for my area at noon. I sure wish Iowa was on for me but nope. Michigan, MSU and Wisconsin. Iowa wearing the nice throwbacks would be much better to watch at this time.

    Unlike Ben, I hope those half jerseys never come back. What an ugly look to see that skin and sloppiness. I do think unis should be tucked in, but things aren’t as bad as those ugly cut-offs.

    Seriously, bare midriffs is OK for the cheerleaders, but I don’t need to see 250 pound men running around with their guts hanging out.

    It still shocks me people like the uniforms Texas wears. Yes, the design is a nice, simple classic, but the color is the same as the stuff that comes out of the backside of a baby.

    Plus, their official color is burnt orange yet their helmet decal is brown (as Paul revealed in his helmet decal article a couple of years ago).

    Everybody complains about inconsistency of colors in uniforms but they continue to give Texas a pass.

    Sorry, Texas gets an F.

    The fact that my Scarlet Knights ( they of the Radio Shack logos ) have the highest graded uni of the Big East, sure those say a lot about a crappy dressed conference….

    Just looked at the pic of Chris Cannizzaro. He’s wearing his New York Mets uniform with a badly-recolored cap crown. That looks like the Polo Grounds in the background.

    What did Jack Lambert used to say about quarterbacks?
    link
    No, that’s not TCU’s latest pro combat design.

    Actually, the Frogs looked good against SMU last night:
    link

    In the venue section, I think the word “bizarre” is intended and not “bazaar”. Very cool building though.

    Penn State’s uniforms are only interesting because they are unique in their plainness. In all honesty, would anybody really want every team to wear the Penn State design with only different colors?

    You hit the nail on the head, Jim.

    There’s a place for new uniforms, but there’s also a place for a uni that has (almost) been untouched for a lifetime. If more teams held on to that look, I might be advocating shoulder stripes or blue road pants or something else. But, they’ve held on the longest, so I give them credit for that.

    I agree. I know both Phil and Jim love the Penn State unis. I rate them a F-. They are not attractive to me at all.

    Way too plain and white is not an attractive color. How many people would say white is their favorite color? How many kids?

    They are so generic looking.

    I would give them better grade of they used the schools original colors. Pink and black. Pink and black go together well.

    But PSU’s plain blue and white is an F-

    Surprised they haven’t gone pink and black in October for breast cancer month…

    Yeah, if every team dressed like them I’d call them generic. But they’re actually unique now, especially with the NNOB jerseys. That’s why I rate them higher than Alabama, even though they’re almost the same. Yes, other teams go NNOB, but most of them have gone back to it, where PSU has stayed with it.

    And the plain white wouldn’t be so way-too-plain if more teams played on grass. Throw some mud on those road unis and they look pretty good.

    The blue is okay, boring but okay. C. The whites are prison unis. F.

    NOB is good IMO. Which is always right. Just ask LI Fillup.

    Outside of wondering if Boomer Sooner will play well on the road at UC tonight, my big question is will Landry Jones wear half white sleeves tonight to match the away jersey. At home this year he’s worn crimson half sleeves…

    I’m sure it was mentioned somewhere but a lot of college coaches are wearing a “coaches to cure md” patch on thier sleeves today. I didn’t find a pic yet, but I also didn’t search hard.

    Can someone please explain why Miami gets a D? There aren’t a lot of pointless stripes or crazy fonts and they have a unique color scheme. Definitely not worthy of a D

    Perhaps you have a different definition of “pointless stripes” and “crazy fonts” than a reasonable person (or Jim) does.

    I dont think its unreasonable to say that Miami has a good look. Too many times people are afraid to embrace something modern (at least on this site). If you ask me, Miami’s green jersey/white pants look is one of the best looks in the country.

    perhaps you have a different definition of “unreasonable” than a reasonable person…or jim…does

    Miami’s colors are sharp. I like their number font, too. The helmets are nice. I even liked their link last year.

    But their regular unis? You can call them modern if you want, but they’re just a mess with the ass stripes on the pants and the idiotic jersey striping that link.

    As for the green over white look: how often do they even wear that? I prefer the orange anyway.

    I don’t have a problem with modern. I like WVU’s unis. I don’t like Miami’s because of the “eyebrows” above the numbers and the goofy pants striping. Yes, the Mountaineers have modern striping, too, but it’s different…and not annoying to me like Miami’s.

    If you’re looking for logic, you’re in the wrong place. Not that I don’t put a lot of thought into my picks, but basically, I either like something or I don’t.

    I also like Nevada’s unis and those Wyoming alternates from last week, so I ain’t no fuddy-duddy. Just some new looks are good and some aren’t. Some old looks are good and some aren’t.

    Just a question, how long has Penn State had the contrast collar jerseys? I would rate their unis higher if they were, well, more plain that is if they went back to jerseys with regular collars, went back to grey facemasks and brought back their helmet numbers.

    I think they went with the contrast color collars back when Nike got the Penn State contract (mid-to-late 90s?). For a brief time, they had a raised, sublimated PSU monogram on the sleeves (IIRC, all caps, with the “S” in a larger font than the “P” and the “U”). I don’t think they have that presently.

    In regards to the new NBA uni’s…. Is it me, or did the Knicks switch theirvhome jersey numbers a bit? From this picture, which I figured was new based on the collar, it looks as if the black dropshadow on the number was replaced by white….

    As opposed to this….

    what’s with the white NOB on the white jersey?

    you can’t read them…what’s the friggin point?

    i know they do it with hoop, but is this something new for football?

    Nope, they did that last year against Arizona, when they “won” the worst matchup award for the week.

    As far as matchups go, I’ve always thought the ACC was a clear #1. You have a gold team, a powder blue team, a royal blue team, a red/white team, an orange/purple team, an orange/green team, and a great looking FSU. Lots of different colors with little overlap. The only dud is Wake Forest.

    The worst conference for matchups is the Big East. Lots of dark colors (4 wear navy, 1 black, and 1 dark green) and little variety (2 teams are blue/gold, and 3 are red/black).

    What’s with all the love over Michigan’s helmet. Its not as if the design is unique. The color scheme maybe but there are at least 2 other colleges with it and one with the same color scheme. I’d rather give credit to a design that is somewhat unique rather than something stolen from the Ivy League.

    Why do I always get caught by the spam sieve? Phil, do something productive and get my comments through. Oh, and BTW, Mizzou? Worst? How about when they wear the gold pants. link Those aren’t that bad. At least not grade D bad.

    You guys were WAAAAAY too nice in dishing out A’s. Jimvilk, the Ole Miss helmet logo is enough to reduce a full letter grade. And the LSU truncation drops it at least two. I know you wouldn’t wear it without that correction.

    wow, if yall were the designers for any league… how boring it would be. i understand you like classic but catch up with the times.

    I refer you to the above conversation regarding the Miami unis. I’d repeat it, but it’s bedtime.

    Ah, heck, I can copy and paste real quick:

    At least the Anaheim Convention Center is right across the street from Disneyland! No wonder there weren’t any fans in the place; Pirates of the Caribbean had opened at the same time.

    You can even see a building from the Disneyland Hotel in one of the pictures.

    Great webpage. I obtained a good deal of excellent data. I?ve been keeping an eye on this technology for awhile. It is fascinating how it keeps shifting, however some of the core elements keep the same.

    I?ve recently started a blog, the information you provide on this site has helped me tremendously. Thank you for all of your time & work.

    I am perplexed by your grading system. For one thing, it appears to be based entirely on a single photograph on each team. But the selection of photos is unbalanced – for instance, you’re using Clemson’s best uniform combo while also using Baylor’s worst. There’s NO WAY Clemson deserves anything higher than a “C” when you consider their purple pants. For that matter, Oregon’s uniforms can look much better depending on the combo.

    The other thing I must call attention to is the lack of detail. Texas COULD be an “A,” but they insist on sporting that awful black sock/black shoe look. It’s just dreadful, and it ought to reduce their grade.

    And Ole Miss? Are you high? Let me get this straight: the NY Giants look terrible when they were a blue helmet, red jersey, and gray pants. But when Ole Miss wears a darker blue helmet, red jersey, and gray pants, it’s a great look. Give me a break.
