Dress Rehearsal

Screen shot 2010-04-02 at 7.54.50 AM.png

Hosiery match-up for the ages last night in San Francisco, as Rajai Davis’s logo-clad stirrups faced off against Barry Zito’s striped socks. Thanks to all who brought it to my attention.

New ESPN column today — the curling story. Link coming soon. Nope — bumped again. Sometime next week. And in case you missed it yesterday, my annual MLB season-preview column is up. — Paul

Uni Watch News Ticker: Yesterday I asked what was up with Kris Benson’s BP jersey. Now Gabe Greenbaum has checked in with the answer: “He’s wearing a D-backs minor league practice jersey. In spring training, they allow minor leaguers to wear regular numbers with ‘fake’ jerseys. They are nylon mesh with no side panels and they wear gray pants, whereas the big-leaguers wear white pants.” Benson is currently on a minor league contract. ”¦ This Pittsburgh Condors throwback has some amazing chain-stitching. Super-inexpensive, too, but don’t let that scare you — Jeff Fedenko says he knows the seller. “He’s a legit overstock seller of Mitchell & Ness,” he says. ”¦ Good video on the design of the World Cup soccer ball here (with thanks to Markus Kemp). ”¦ Here’s an excellent resource: If you go to this page and click on any of the team logos, you’ll auto-download the football uniform history for that school (major thanks to Jay Rogers). ”¦ Good video about the Chicago Blackhawks equipment staff (as forwarded by Ron Roza). ”¦ Ron also sent along pics of his Springsteen-themed goalie masks. “They were custom-made by Gary Warwick, and Todd Miska painted them (he did Eddie Belfour’s masks),” Ron explains. “They were made for me about 10 years ago, before a wife and kids, and continue to get plenty of wear.” ”¦ New uniform, sort of, for the Phillie Phanatic (with thanks to Andrew Hoenig). ”¦ The WNBA’s team, the Tulsa Shock, will look like this (with thanks to Joseph Moore). ”¦ I don’t think we’ve seen a real person modeling the Giants’ new alternate jersey and cap until now. That’s Mike Heimowitz on the right — he works for the team and sent along the photo. ”¦ Love this shot of Deacon Jones wearing FiNOB (screen shot courtesy of John Szczepanski). ”¦ “Virginia football coach Mike London has been talking about a big overhaul of the school’s uniforms,” writes Ryan Mahanes. “The phrase used was that Virginia would become an ‘Oregon of the East’ in terms of color and style combinations. London apparently even met with Oregon and Nike officials this winter to discuss such a move. Many UVa fans think it’s just an April Fool’s joke, but they’ve been talking it up for awhile. Here’s a link to a story that makes the Oregon comparison.” ”¦ Cool photo of the Gonzaga hoops team wearing sleeved jerseys — with “GU” instead of TV numbers (very interesting find by Al Cummings). ”¦ Y’know, maybe pajama pants aren’t so bad after all. Matt Mitchell sent me that shot from a softball game between Baylor (massive Under Armour logo) and Texas A&M (faux stirrups with Adidas logo). ”¦ Is the SI cover jinx real? Which teams have been represented most (and least) often on the cover of SI‘s baseball preview issue? Dan Cichalski decided to tackle these weighty issues on his blog. ”¦ Just what you’ve always wanted: a Minnesota Gophers dishwasher indicator (odd find by Tris Wykes). ”¦ Morris Levin reports that Flyers backup goalie Carter Hutton was wearing his UMass-Lowell mask the other night. … The L.A. Kings sent an e-mail to fans yesterday that included, among other things, a note that the team will wear its black alternate jerseys for postseason home games. “Maybe the Kings should focus on actually making the playoffs instead of picking a jersey to wear,” says Mike Jones.

I mentioned this a few days ago with no photos, but the Orioles also tinkered with their new away jerseys to avoid the “Balttimore” issue we saw last year.

So I’m looking through today’s blog and ticker, and backtracking through yesterday’s comments section…

Did no one really point-out or comment about the men’s NIT Championship between Dayton and UNC being played with link?

Yeah, I forgot to watch the game too, but I had to rub my eyes when I saw the highlights late lastnight…hence the backtracking through uniwatch today. Sorry if I missed a previous discussion.

went to the sports authority yesterday looking for some real ‘rups and was disappointed to find only the full sock…none of which sported stripes.

Something wrong with pullovers? It just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me to cut the wordmark in half and always have alignment issues. It looks sloppy. Either design the jersey around the fact that is split in the middle and follow the same general layout as the Yankees or Tigers home uniforms, or wear a pullover so you aren’t chopping your name in half.

Why did Baltimore do it in the first place? I don’t think you should ever have the double-letter effect for a jersey. For example, the Braves have never done it. The home jerseys have “Bra” on the right and “ves” on the left.

Speaking of “Dress Rehearsals”, the Twins have an exhibition game with the Cardinals today to introduce the new ballpark.

And, naturally, it’s supposed to be raining around game time. Not “stop the game” kind of rain, I guess, but rain.

So there’ll be all kinds of barbs about why Minnesota didn’t build a retractable dome (although such criticism never seems to be levied against Detroit, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington and two teams in New York, all of whom, I’m pretty sure have had a rainout or two).

But, you wanna know the real reason why leaving the Dome behind is a good thing? Here it is…

On the news last night, video of a young man, mid-20s, peering through the gates at Target Field just to get a feel for the place. As he looks off camera toward the field he says, sort of wistfully, “I’ve never seen an outdoor baseball game.”

    —Ricko
(And, please, don’t some knothead ask if high schools play indoors in Minnesota, or why didn’t he go to Saints game, or something. Obviously he was referencing MLB. Jeez.)

If that is a faux stirrup in the shot of Texas A&M and Baylor then it’s an exception to the rule. I’ve been to several A&M softball games over the past couple of years and haven’t seen a player wearing a faux stirrup.

All of the players that I’ve seen have ribbon stirrups like the ones in link shot that clearly shows a twisted stirrup on the left leg and a seperation between stirrup and sani on the right leg.

The stirrup is alive and well in College Station. Now if we could just get some stripes on the baseball team’s.

    ok, guys…

I officiate spring practice for some colleges and our standard attire is plain black shorts with our normal striped shirt and hat (white in my case since I’m usually the referee). We also wear our plain black shoes.

The question is what type of socks should be worn with this? I usually wear black “no show” socks so it looks like I’m not wearing any. Thoughts?

Someone wanna give me a reason beyond “that’s just how it is/should be”? Within my lifetime most of the league has used them for at least a couple seasons. Just because no one does it NOW doesn’t make it wrong. It’s not like it looks drastically different, it just fixes the chopped wordmark issue. (and of course they’re quicker to put on, but that doesn’t need mentioning)
Zito’s stripes are too high, and Davis’s logos are too low.
Great minds, etc.
Just wrote EXACTLY the same thing to Phil in an e-mail.

Why would anyone who professes to know something about baseball uni history even ORDER socks with stripes that high…when the era of stripes that high was the teens and ’20s with hugely baggy short pants? The cut of today’s short pants is far more like the ’60s and ’70s, so stripes (you would think) would be positioned more the way it was those years. Is just kind of a scrambled mishmash of history. Come to think of it, I suppose by their standards that passes of knowing what you’re talking about.

while it’s not terribly original, aren’t the conn tiggers a farm team of the detroit version?

and i kinda like how the olde english logo is reminiscent of detroit’s

More importantly, though, the NCAA is about to solve that problem they’ve had for so very, very long. Namely that SO many times the 95th ranked basketball team is really the best in the land, but they get overlooked by the media and other teams. Finally, that injustice soon will have a chance to rectified.

And, along the way, if the NCAA happens to pick up that money that’s now going to the NIT instead of them…well, that’s just a byproduct of righting this egregious wrong.

Also, I believe the phrase “The Big Dance” will be replaced with “The Money Grab”.

    RE: CT. Tigers

Yes they are, and I believe they are changing the name next year…but it could have been a great way to incorporate CT (as a double meaning logo for both the Tigers & the state of Conn.)…but obviously laziness is reflective in just designing the logo and has/had no future to begin with in branding the team.

Why change your logo 2x in 2 years, where you could have easily & permanently branded your team…

They are changing to Puma and the real kits will be released today. I have their change kit from last year but thanks to Errea’s inability to keep this year’s home kit in stock, I never got one. The empty racks at Turf Moor probably contributed to the change in supplier.

They need to vote him into the hall of fame before Shane Lechler officially surpasses him as best Raiders punter of all time, assuming he hasn’t already.

It was jersey day yesterday for JV/freshmen for my high school team. The rule is to wear solid green socks (I know, but its not my call), and most kids typically have/get their own. On the off occasion that they need socks, we give out green ‘rups. Well, yesterday a freshman said he needed socks so I hand him a pair of ‘rups, and he says “what are these?”

My initial reaction was “are you kidding me?” I sucked in as much air as I could and “gently” gave him a lesson.

Wasn’t the issue a matter of time? The team only got formal permission to move within the last few days. They claim they’ll have a better, more permanent logo next year, following a name-the-team contest.

Spring training, being SO laid back, doesn’t seem inappropriate for less formal jerseys, etc.

BUT, I’m guessing that Trembley’s idea is to get his young team into a certain frame of mind (and the fans, too), to think of themselves as major leaguers and to begin dressing and carrying themselves as if they were. In which case, it’s probably a really good idea for them to dispense with the normal casual attitude. Let them think they’ll get the pleasure of kicking back a little in Florida once they’ve earned it on the field over 162 games.

“Maybe the Kings should focus on actually making the playoffs instead of picking a jersey to wear,” says Mike Jones.

The Kings, along with the Coyotes, have been the feel-good stories of the NHL’s Western Conference this season.

Neither team was thought to make the playoffs, yet both teams have found good goaltending, solid defensive play, and some breakthrough scoring performances.

Los Angeles’ number for making the playoffs is two. Two LA wins, two Calgary losses, or a combination of one win by LA and one loss by Calgary puts the Kings in the playoffs.

I’m going to speculate if this was simply East Coast bias or simply not checking info, but unless the Kings collapse down the stretch (and they beat the Canucks last night), they will be a part of the 2009-10 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

It would be awesome if Slama faced Brendan Ryan in their game tonight. The Twins’ announcers seemed puzzled as to why Slama is wearing stirrups, since he’s the only Twin to wear them. They said Terry Mulholland was the last Twin to wear ‘rups.
Missed this one earlier…
