Who Was Lamer: Phyllis George or Jayne Kennedy? Discuss.

Screen shot 2009-12-28 at 10.01.16 PM.png

Paul here. Today is Phil’s birthday, so I’ve given him 50 ¢ and sent him to the movies. There’s no way I can match his usual Sunday smorgasbord, but I think I’ve come up with something that’s appropriate for the last Sunday of the NFL regular season.

A few weeks ago, Jim Vilk posted a series of late-night comments that linked to some excellent NFL-related videos — videos that are too good to be relegated to a series of late-night comments. So I’m going to cover them today and give them the attention they deserve.

First up: a CBS halftime show from 1979, anchored by Brent Musberger. The thing that really jumps out at you here is the junior high-level production values — incredibly (and endearingly) rinky-dink, although I’ve always loved this illustration. Also of note: great sock stripes being worn by the Giants (also note the official’s NOB), a good view of the Eagles’ old UCLA inserts, and a rare sighting of the Cards’ old full-house backfield. And check out John Stallworth at the line of scrimmage with his hands on his hips — remember when that used to be a fairly common way for wideouts to set up for the snap? Always struck me as “I’m so cool, just hangin’ out, I’m loose, I’m cool.” Anyway, here’s the full vid:

Next up: NBC’s early-’70s theme music and game intro, complete with players suiting up in their uniforms before the game. No need for screen shots on this one — just watch and enjoy:

Not a dry pair of pants in the house after watching that, am I right? But here’s a bonus factoid you may have forgotten: NBC briefly used that same musical score for its Sunday-afternoon NHL broadcasts. The final note — punctuated in the NFL version by the player slapping himself in the helmet — was accented by a goalie pounding his catching glove either with his fist or his stick, can’t remember.

Next: The world-beating intro to CBS’s NFL Today opening credits, circa 1978. Fun fact: Back in the day, a young Paul Lukas was thoroughly entranced — I mean thoroughly entranced — by the bit where a hand is shown flipping this lever. A supple flick of the wrist + just a hint of resistance from the lever = Perfection. Watch for it at the 44-second mark:

After Jim posted that one in the comments two weeks ago, Ricko followed up with the following info: “That music wasn’t original, wasn’t commissioned by CBS. It’s from a commercial music library (can’t remember the name of the track, though). It later showed up on a chainsaw commercial, and we used it a couple times on radio spots to parody the NFL”¦and for only the cost of standard ‘needledrop.'”

I’m too young to remember the great animation featured in our next video, which is from a 1970 playoff game, but I love (also note the great CBS Sports logo in the opening seconds):

That should be enough to keep everyone happy for the rest of the day, if not well into the new year. Faith Hill and Hank Jr. can blow me — I’ll take this stuff every day of the week.

Uni Watch News Ticker, Rare Sunday Edition: I knew Bert Campaneris had worn “Campy” on his jersey during that period when so many of the A’s were wearing nickNOBs, but I hadn’t seen visual evidence of it until now (major find by Steve K.). ”¦ Air Force went with a camo-patterned lightning bolt for the Armed Forces Bowl on Friday. ”¦ Portland Winterhawks goalie Ian Curtis has a new mask design with lots of Portland references (with thanks to Travis McGuire). ”¦ If you scroll about two-thirds of the way down this page, you’ll see all the different “ND” logos on display at Purcell Pavilion in South Bend (nice find by Matt Blinco). ”¦ Standford running backs coach Willie Taggard is slated to become Western Kentucky’s head coach, but couldn’t he have waited until after the Sun Bowl before wearing WKU gear? (Screen shot courtesy of Eric Visokey.) ”¦ Cort McMurray‘s wife didn’t like any of the Houston Cougars stadium blankets she saw in stores (“cheap acrylic junk,” he says), so she made a DIY blanket for him and also got him tickets for the Armed Forces Bowl, where he enjoyed the color-on-color action. ”¦ Bit of a cock-up when the announced the Team USA hockey roster during the Winter Classic, as the kid wearing Jamie Langenbrunner’s jersey was sporting a typo (as sotted by Mike Eakins). … Jeremy Brahm kicked off the new year by sending along new of the new FIBA Men’s Championship mascot, along with a video FIBA championship history with lots of cool old uniforms — recommended view (although the soundtrack is unlistenable, so hit your mute button). ”¦ Ten minutes well spent: This video of Pittsburgh hockey history, with lots of cool old uniforms (big thanks to Austin Chen). ”¦ Interesting news about skate guards and Kevlar socks here (with thanks to Paul Richard Cook). ”¦ Best part of the Winter Classic: hockey players with eye-black! ”¦ Matt Powers is gonna find this one very troubling: a Princeton football player without footwear. Barefootedness notwithstanding, it’s kinda odd to put a punter on a program cover, no? (Great find by Tris Wykes.) ”¦ What happens when your jersey is the same color as the field? The superimposed TV graphics can be superimposed on you (nice screen-grab work by Brian Polk). ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Fucking awesome DIY Chargers gridiron on display here. ”¦ While looking for something else, I came across this great shot of Spahny and Yogi in civvies. ”¦ Already worrying about what to wear next Christmas? You could do a lot worse than this. … Matt Newbery was watching one of those high school all-star games and noticed a few players with uni number issues. Note the different NOB fonts, too. … No photo, but Trey Jones says that when Warren Moon made his NFL debut with the Oilers, he wore “Canada” on his nose bumper, as a shout-out to his CFL days. Can anyone confirm or disprove? ”¦ Matthew Robins attended a wedding in Wisconsin on New Year’s Eve. The groom’s cake looked like this. ”¦ Oregon wasn’t part of Nike’s riflery program, but they got their own rifle-style glove design for the Rose Bowl (big thanks to Christopher Smith).

For the Birthday Boy: Please join me in wishing Phil the happiest of birthdays today. Enjoy your special day, buddy — hope you get everything you wish for when you blow out the candles. Now turn off the computer and go treat yourself to something special. You deserve it.

    On the 1970 intro:
    1. Watch the small box in the lower right and you’ll see the animation is taken from the film footaqge being shown.
    2. The theme was called “Confidence” and was from a short-lived musical about Walter Mitty. CBS used several versions, including a faster march (my favorite) and, later, an electronic version.

Back off Phyllis George. Not her fault networks only hired female sports reporters back then if they were beauty queens and genuflected to just about any male anchor with an annoyingly affected speaking style and/or a hairpiece.

The videos also remind me of two things:
    1) How annoying Brent Musberger was even back then.
    2) How good OJ Anderson was his rookie year and how awful most of his STL Cardinal teammates were.

Whoa, Paul. That FIBA video soundtrack — at first I was thinking, “uh, OK, it’s not fantastic, but ‘unlistenable?’ Come on.”

But I’d have to say that your mini-review is dead-on-balls accurate and I should have followed your advice about the mute button.

What the hell is that, anyway?

re: John Stallworth and WR setting up with hands on hips.

Yes, hands on hips was quite common.
Many coaches had recievers do it as a sort of semi-“set” posiiton, to prevent any arm movement that might have been seen as illegal motion. Other common version was arms at sides.

However, I recall plenty of flankers and split ends (Raymond Berry, Tommy McDonald and Randy Vataha come to mind quickly) who still used the common three-point stance.

Mostly it was individual preference. If I remember correctly, with the Colts, Lenny Moore stood straight up when he was playing flanker, while split end Berry was in three-point on the other side.

Paul, That isn’t the “name on back” (NOB) of the officials. I think it would be considered the “position on back” (POB). It stated which official was which… i.e. “Umpire”, “Referee” & “Side Judge”.

The graphics on those CBS clips may look rinky-dink, but they weren’t. That was state-the-art.

While watching that ’78 NFL Today Intro I couldn’t help but remember the Jets “silent game”, I think it was in ’80. I remember being riveted to the TV for the whole game.

    Everybody!

    “Happy Birthday to you,
    Happy Birthday to you,
    Happy Birthday, Dear Phil,
    Happy Birthday to you.”

And, of course, one yutz will continue,
    “How old are you…”

    (Take it, The Jeff) ;)

Now, had Phil grown up in the Twin Cities, this most surely would warm his cockles…

1980, Jets at Dolphins, I believe.

And here’s the full disco version of the 1970’s NBC Sports theme, by the same composer. Makes me think of Bryant Gumbel for some reason.

You got it Ricko. Just looked it up on Wiki, Dec 20, 1980 Jets @ Dolphins

    I have a question.

Wasn’t Texas Tech the first major football program to go with the monochrome black, including black socks and cleats?

I kinda think they were (a decade ago, or earlier?) cuz I can’t recall anywhere else I saw it earlier…or maybe it could have been Cincinnati, or someone like Northern Illinois, perhaps?

Pretty sure was a school that wears black with red.

Perfectly willing to wrong, that’s why I’m asking.

    —Ricko

    Paul,
You were not the only one transfixed to the TV once the music started to the CBS and NBC intros, I also experienced a Pavlovian reaction. (Still do!) It was the Sunday morning equal to Monday Night Football’s theme.
As far as the debate between Phyllis and Jayne, Phyllis was OK but for me Jayne Kennedy was it. I had a huge crush on that otherworldly beauty : )
(I was a kid in the Green Bay area, anyone not German, Polish or Irish qualified. In fact, even Italians seemed borderline exotic back then.)
In terms of John Stallworth and hands on the hips it seems that the 70’s was the crossover period where you still had three point stance ‘split ends’ and the new ‘wide receiver’ upright stances.

I remember NBC’s baseball game of the week intro ended with a catcher smiling from behind his mask. Think they used the same music, though I’m not totally sure.

That lever being pulled from the NFL Today intro reminded me of this. Skip to 3:35.

paul, why, exactly, do you refer to the nike thing as the “riflery program”? is it because of it being called “combat” whatever? i guess i missed when you first explained why you chose to refer to those unis as “riflery” unis.

To answer the original discussion from today’s posting…one thing for certain: Phyllis George has aged EXTREMELY well…WOW!!!

Who cares “who was lamer”…both Phyllis and Jayne paved the way for the Andrea Kramer’s/Hannah Storm’s/Erin Andrew’s of the sports world…

    Enjoy the games…

Could you imagine any network attempting the same thing this weekend?
Not likely. Hell, the League, the players union, would both have a fit. Now, the officials union would probably love it.

For a few years in the early-to-mid 70s, NBC used that theme music for baseball, football, and even hockey. If you got to MLB.com and check out their free view of the ’75 All-Star game, you hear it. There used to be a clip on YouTube of the hockey theme but I can’t find it.

How about Vin Scully calling football? You get those December afternoons in Minnesota an it’s not a very pleasant good afternoon to you, wherever you may be.

I believe that 1970 Dallas v Detroit playoff game
ended with the Cowboys winning by the strange score of 5-0.

i reiterate from late last night phil…
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! enjoy your day, and…

I’m sure it shows what kind of guy I am-and I assure I understand usage of jargon in context. However – I’d choose Faith over Hank for that activity mentioned. And while any evidence of Phyllis George’s skills remains unknown to me, Jayne Kennedy’s is availabale for d/l. . ..

Yes, that is correct. It was the only time the Lions made the playoffs in the 70’s

If COLTS end up running the table from here on out, how long we think it will be before people stop talking about Caldwell sitting down Petyon and others last week?

btw, my vote for “Dumbest Talking Head Comment of 2009” goes to Tony Kornheiser, who actually said Caldwell wasn’t being fair to gamblers and people who play fantasy football.

Congratulations, Couch Potoatoes, you now officially matter. At least to Tony Kornheiser.

Why not? Sports has morphed into being concerned with money above all else, right? Well Fantasy Football and Gambling are giant money makers these days.

Let’s just hope it never goes so far that the NFL (or any sport) officially says it should take into account those who need point spreads and imaginary games to stay interested in the product.

The first instant replay was used at an Army-Navy game…1963, I believe. Lindsay Nelson called the game.

Didn’t see it (or anything else that year ’cause I wasn’t around yet), but I remember reading about it. The one time I won a radio call-in contest, it was for answering that question.

’63 seems right, because the Hennigan replay I so vividly recall came late in the season (probably after the Army-Navy game) and was in the home stripeless jersey and single-white-stripe helmet (three white sleeve stripes and additional stripes–two of them red—came with the new Oiler unis in ’64).

Love the vintage NFL videos. I’ve got a few on youtube as well. Mostly vintage Seahawks stuff, however, I do have this one featuring those cheap ass Rawlings helmets.

    Lame.

    Happy Birthday Phil!

And thanks, Paul, for sharing those videos with a wider audience. I remember every Sunday during the 70s watching the NFL Today, even if we watched the NBC game.

I remember Jayne Kennedy, but just barely. I have warm memories of Phyllis (just warm, mind you…I was a mere lad waiting for football), as well as Brent, Irv…even The Greek…and Jack Whitaker’s commentaries.

And of course, if I wasn’t watching the Steelers or Oilers, I was watching whatever game Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier were calling. They seemed like two of my buddies.

I even had fond memories of the beer commercials. I liked Ed McMahon’s “Holiday Greetings from Budweiser” and Natural Light’s “The Beer With the Taste For Food.” Beats the crap out of today’s stock trading and ED commercials…at least most of today’s beer ads are funny.

Whoa, almost time for the “Which Of You Teams Is Most Tired of Sucking Lately?” Bowl (Giants at Vikings).

Actually, an interesting combination of colors, though:
Purple, Athletic Gold, White vs. White, Royal, Red, Gray.

wasn’t the first EVER “instant” replay (not just nfl) ever one of the mickey mantle moonshots in (i think) 1961*

im almost 99% certain that was the first ever time such a device was used

as far as the nfl, no idea, but im pretty sure i heard that a mantle HR was the first ever use

The soundtrack of my youth: 1970’s NFL Pregame Show theme music.

A lot of stuff sure looked better in the ’70’s (logos, socks, sleeves–look at the Eagles and Cardinals and Lions and tell me that they look better today), including the crude (though not at the time) graphics. What passes today as information on the screen is, to me, eye pollution.

    Yes, I am old. :)

Could be Hornung:he was a placekicker. Bragg was a punter: Curt Knight was the Skins PK in those days.

Whoa! CBS is counter-programming the Bears game on Fox with a *gasp* NFL game? I was expecting to flip over and see a gardening show or something.

Ahhh yes. I was SO geeked out for all this stuff – going back to NBC Baseball in the 1960s. The full half hour pregame shows for 70’s football were must see TV. Pre-merger in Baltimore we had a local pre-taped pregame before kickoff on the CBS afilliate. Seemed to be around 1970 that the national pregame shows took hold.

Jax @ Browns (rd game, so not blacked out) feels like a football game, and looks damn cold.

Great topic! I’ve been trolling YouTube for a while now, looking for original-broadcast clips.

When I saw Dandy Don in the 1978 Pro Bowl clip, I had to remind myself that that was his second stint on MNF. He left ABC briefly to do NBC games; he was a color commentator, alongside Curt Gowdy, for the “Sea of Hands” Dolphins-Raiders playoff in ’74.

    intersting factoid on instant replay

while searching to see if there was any mention of (what i thought was first use by baseball)…apparently instant replay was invented for HNIC

but the technology was never used

the widely accepted (and mentioned here earlier) “first” use in IR, was indeed, the army-navy game:

On December 7, 1963 TV and sports history was made when the first ‘instant replay’ ever seen on the air was broadcast during the Army-Navy game.

The creator was 29-year-old ‘wunderkind’ CBS television director Tony Verna, whose illustrious show-business career has spanned over 50 years of Sport and Entertainment history

still thought a mantle HR was earlier, but maybe it wasn’t considered instant replay

It’s the Cowboys. That much you could put money on(okay, holder could be Danny White; think he held for a time but Waters did for years, and it kinda looks like #41. Also, photo could go back to ’77, which would make it Effern Herrera, who was “portlier” than Septien and did wear bigger pads, as I recall. I’ll amend my earlier comment and say it’s Herrera and Waters).

    A) from that particular angle, soccer and straight-on kickers look remarkably alike at moment of impact.
    B) kicker’s wearing white shoes. By late ’70s when every NFL team but the Vikings wore white shoes, there weren’t very many straight-on kickers left, especially ones who wore a uni that would come close to matching that one; two wide white sleeve stripes and fairly apparent.

I learned to punt barefoot. My uncle (who’d played for the Gophers) told me it was best way to learn. He was correct. When you strike the ball properly, doesn’t hurt at all. That’s how you know you’re doing it right. When you’ve got that down, you can put your shoe back on.

I believe in week 17 both networks have doubleheaders due to the fact there is no Monday night game in week 17. The only reason we are not getting a CBS game in Detroit is the Lions sold out at home thanks to all the Bears fans.

Starting in 2006, both networks air a double-header in week 17

    Actually, NOT shocking.

Both networks have had doubleheaders on the final Sunday of the season for the past several seasons.

Two reasons: (1) Since there are 17 Sundays in the season, there needs to be one weekend when both networks have doubleheaders so that each has the same number of doubleheaders; (2) Four games broadcast on the final Sunday gives the most chance of showing games with playoff implications.

If the Cowboys beat the Eagles, then Minnesota will get the #2 seed and the Eagles will have to go back to Dallas for the first week of the playoffs. By Minnesota winning, the Packers are already guaranteed to play Arizona on the road again next week.

I don’t know about repeats on the first two WC games. But I know the Lions and Packers played the ’93 season finale at the Silverdome, then played again six days later, again in Pontiac, in the playoffs.

Didn’t the Jets and Raiders do the same thing in the past few years? My memory’s fuzzier on that.

The main reason the announcer less game failed, was because it was TOO EARLY – there was no such thing as stereo TV yet. Plus, the Orange Bowl was a very bad place to do it, acoustically speaking – it literally soakied up the sound. I think TODAY, with a good portion of the audience having HD/Surround Sound, the SOA graphics available, it would be an AWESOME thing to revisit.

With the score (example: Green Bay 10, Detroit 7), let’s pause for a moment (CBS commericial intro)

Curt Gowdy at the top of the hour, “We now pause five seconds for station identification. This is the NBC Television Network.”

NBC with no pre-game show (didn’t come along until 1975).

Split feed audio on CBS (example: Giants at Browns. NY viewers heard Jack Whitaker and Frank Gifford. Cleveland viewers heard Frank Glieber and Warren Lahr).

The “CBS Sports” ticket tearing in half, with a ref’s whstle blowing. Then then “Confidence” song starts up as the CBS voiceover intones: “CBS Sports presents, the National Football League. Brought to you by, Ford. Who has a better idea. By Firestone. Where the rubber meets the road. By The American Oil Company. You expect more from American. And you get it. By Marlboro. Come to where the flavor is. Come to Marlboro Country. And by Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. A popular beer at popular prices.”

Good afternoon. I’m Ray Scott. Alongside me, Pat Summerall.

At halftime, we’ll be showing you the Wilson High School marching band, and then we’ll go to CBS Control with Bill Mazer bringing you first half highlights and statistics. So don’t go away!

Pro Football Report with Bruce Roberts in Chicago (CBS postgame highlights show). While over at NBC, Pat Hernon hosts the Sperry-NFL Report.

That is OK. Between the mismanagement under Millen and the shitty new number font on the jerseys I really don’t care for the Lions much. Just watching them cause their ain’t much on otherwise. That’s why I was apologizing. My brethren snapped up enough tickets to force Fox to show you that game and lock you out of a different one.

Y’know, I really don’t mind that font for the numbers as much as I thought I would. But I definitely don’t care for it on the LIONS wordmark in the end zone. The thing I really can’t stand is the black facemasks.

Can we christen the unitards that Arizona is wearing the ‘Used Tampons’ uniforms? Because that is the very first thing I thought when they took the field today.

All my buddies used to rail about kickers wearing two different shoes – saw it as a “look at me” thing. Soccer shoes for kicking are drastically different from football shoes, I would tell them. That said, if the soccer shoe was designed and fitted properly, I would see no advantage to kicking barefoot.

I absolutely love how the Seahawks look in the blue jersey and dark navy blue pants.

Warren Sapp was right, Greg Knapp is terrible. Thankfully, this season is over, and the last play of the game pretty much summed it up best for the 2009 Seahawks. Hopefully, the new GM will sack Knapp.

I imagine the barefoot thing is just what a guy is used to. I certainly wasn’t advocating kicking barefoot, just saying that when you’re a kid it’s a great way to learn…or, I suppose, get your technique back again if goes a little south on you.

The “different shoes” rule actually pre-dated Pete Gogolak and those who followed him. It was on the books to allow straight-on kickers to wear a square-toed shoe.

se: Jim O’Brien winning Super Bowl V with a square-toed Riddell on one foot and a regular adidas turf shoe on the other. He was a backup receiver, too, and changed to the Riddell as FG opportunities came approached. Check the toes of Paul Hornung’s shoes…

Didn’t the Jets and Raiders do the same thing in the past few years? My memory’s fuzzier on that.
Yes; Jets and Raiders played each other in Oakland in the final game of the ’01 season; Jets won 24-22 on a 52-yd John Hall FG to make the playoffs. Back in Oakland the next week, Raiders won 38-24.

In the last game of 1991, the Raiders and Chiefs played in L.A. already knowing they would play each other in the wild-card round; only question was where, winner would host the game. Chiefs won 27-21 despite Todd Marinovich throwing 3 TDs in his starting debut; the next week in KC, Chiefs won 10-6.

I meant to say BLACK football cleats.

Looking at the Bengals’ ridiculous outfits, it occurs to me that when they made the change to this jersey and pants set they kept the helmet exactly the same. When’s the last time a team did that?

The Bills changed only the center striping pattern and colors; the Cardinals only slightly changed the logo decal. The Falcons changed the logo decal and the Rams changed only the color of the horn decals. The Jaguars changed the helmet shells to the color-reflective metallic paint.

I can’t think of any other team in the AFL/merger era that completely revamped its uniform from the neck down without making any changes to the helmet.

I don’t dislike this look as much as others here, but I do admit this game would have looked better at Lambeau: link

#66 for the Jets doesn’t have a helmet decal on one side of his helmet. I think it’s the right side.

That’s a great find! The yellow sleeves really help that matchup.

well…g-men get roasted (although, did it really matter?) and the jesters are going to the playoffs

i’ve had better football birthdays, but thanks to everyone who wished me a happy bday

Well, with college basketball underway, that means the economy’s gonna tank again…

Just now get to check the uniblog after an 8 hour drive through a snowstorm….Happy Birthday LI!

Boy it looks cold in NYC. I just looked at the box score.

bengals have nine yards total offense with under 10 to go in the third.

    NINE.

Apparently the Jets made up “Win And We’re In!” towels to give away at tonight’s game. At least I hope they were giveaways.

    it IS cold brinke

21 degrees farenheit (at least here on LI)…winds not as bad as last night (50 mph gusts)

just prepping us for the pond hockey wx i guess

Wasn’t that game announcerless because NBC had their sound equipment was stolen from the stadium the night before the game?

No. Once they realized that this Saturday afternoon national game (I miss those) was a dog, they decided to go announcerless and promoted the hell out of it.

While I’m here, happy birthday, Phil.

They still make square-toe shoes? I’d love a pair, even though I’m only kicking for…kicks. I’ve never worn anything other than regular turf shoes, and for the times I kick straight-on I just curl up my toes. Very little margin for error. Never had soccer shoes, either, for when I switch styles.
1-2 companies still make them. There is a Placekicking Website with camps and sideline nets and shoes with links to companies that still make squaretoe kicking shoes. There is a particular shoe, with a huge flat fronyt similar to Tom Dempsey’s shoe, only for full footed kickers, that allegedly adds 10-15 yards to your kicks. Some HS kid from Illinois allegedly made an 83 yd FG with the shoe about 8-10 years ago. He ended up kicking off for the Florida Gators, but never won the FG kicker job.

Once in awhile you can find them on Ebay. I got a pair of Riddell hightops with a square toe shoe, other matching shoe about 3 years ago.

man…after making everyone associated with the 72 dolfish extremely happy last week (obviously, the colts are still reeling, going down 30-7 to the bills today)…and now thoroughly dismantling the bungals…

i guess we can officially say the jets are super bowl bound

Ahhhhhh. So that’s what it stands for. Wondered.

If there is one thing I’m NOT looking forward to January 22-24 it’s the cuold. Can we do a DEEP SOUTH next year?
The NBC music is AWESOME! I used to watch the games almost just to hear that music. They used it on college hoops games too. I still have an audio cassette tape with that theme song on it from 1976.
I remember a great intro that was all drums with a scanning of all the team helmets in 1968/69? It fascinated me as a kid.

The Saints kept the same helmet through 6-7 jersey types and 4-5 pants types, then finally shrank the fleur de lis a bit and added an outline while keeping the same uni.

THAT IS AN AWESOME JERSEY !!!

I predict that we wil eventually see those type of stripes, at least at the NCAA level, giventhe disappearance of sleeves from football jerseys.
Similar to the 1945 Calgary Stampeders, a HS team in Corpus Christi, TX, and the featured team in the “School Ties” movie that started my throwback jersey interest ….

Always liked Jim Zorn. Too bad about his Redskin drama.

Here’s a screen grab that I bet no one can find …. Jim Zorn #11 for the Cowboys in preseason 1975! Played great in 2 preseason games for the Cowboys, but got cut as they would only keep two QBs back then. If I am not mistaken, WR Steve Largent was also at that Cowboy training camp and also got cut at the end. The rest is Seahawk History.
When I was a kid, I told the local shoe salesman I wanted a shoe like Tom Dempsey’s. He politely explained why that wasn’t possible. That would be cool having the shoe you mentioned.

Of course, I could also use something to bring back what little flexibility I once had…

Al Michaels did the games in Pittsburgh, while Keith Jackson did the games in Baltimore. Vin Scully did the games on the radio. I have games 5 and 7 on VHS and I taped game 7 off my radio, so I have Stargell’s game-winning home run announced by two of the greatest announcers of all time. And I have Al Michaels, too…
ABC it was. NBC did the NCLS
You guys are right. Memory failed me. I do remember NBC doing the NLCS, though. What solidified it in my mind was that the game ended in Pittsburgh, and that was the backdrop as the NBC theme music at the end rolled. The World Series ended in Baltimore.

If you really want to go old-school NBC AFL.
It’s the famed NBC “Chimes” march … heard recently on HBO’s history of the American Football League … written by a former assoc. director for Carson’s Tonight Show – you can hear a sample by hitting the website above.

All good examples, although I was thinking more along the lines of a total revamp like the Bengals, rather than tweaks like the Steelers (numeral font), Lions (pants color), Colts (ditto) and Saints (various minor tweaks). The Eagles and Redskins examples are better, particularly the latter.

I have this memory of Jayne Kennedy that is so strange that I would like to know if anybody else remembers it.

One Sunday when I was real young, Dan Pastorini, quarterback of the Houston Oilers, was about to use the first flak jacket to protect his broken ribs.

NFL Today got Jayne Kennedy to wear the flak jacket and a blue floral bikini and nothing else. She looked amazing. Then some guy (the inventor, maybe) hit Jayne with a baseball bat to prove that the thing worked.

Anybody else remember this crazy event?
