Paul here. Today is Phil’s birthday, so I’ve given him 50 ¢ and sent him to the movies. There’s no way I can match his usual Sunday smorgasbord, but I think I’ve come up with something that’s appropriate for the last Sunday of the NFL regular season.
A few weeks ago, Jim Vilk posted a series of late-night comments that linked to some excellent NFL-related videos — videos that are too good to be relegated to a series of late-night comments. So I’m going to cover them today and give them the attention they deserve.
First up: a CBS halftime show from 1979, anchored by Brent Musberger. The thing that really jumps out at you here is the junior high-level production values — incredibly (and endearingly) rinky-dink, although I’ve always loved this illustration. Also of note: great sock stripes being worn by the Giants (also note the official’s NOB), a good view of the Eagles’ old UCLA inserts, and a rare sighting of the Cards’ old full-house backfield. And check out John Stallworth at the line of scrimmage with his hands on his hips — remember when that used to be a fairly common way for wideouts to set up for the snap? Always struck me as “I’m so cool, just hangin’ out, I’m loose, I’m cool.” Anyway, here’s the full vid:
Next up: NBC’s early-’70s theme music and game intro, complete with players suiting up in their uniforms before the game. No need for screen shots on this one — just watch and enjoy:
Not a dry pair of pants in the house after watching that, am I right? But here’s a bonus factoid you may have forgotten: NBC briefly used that same musical score for its Sunday-afternoon NHL broadcasts. The final note — punctuated in the NFL version by the player slapping himself in the helmet — was accented by a goalie pounding his catching glove either with his fist or his stick, can’t remember.
Next: The world-beating intro to CBS’s NFL Today opening credits, circa 1978. Fun fact: Back in the day, a young Paul Lukas was thoroughly entranced — I mean thoroughly entranced — by the bit where a hand is shown flipping this lever. A supple flick of the wrist + just a hint of resistance from the lever = Perfection. Watch for it at the 44-second mark:
After Jim posted that one in the comments two weeks ago, Ricko followed up with the following info: “That music wasn’t original, wasn’t commissioned by CBS. It’s from a commercial music library (can’t remember the name of the track, though). It later showed up on a chainsaw commercial, and we used it a couple times on radio spots to parody the NFL”¦and for only the cost of standard ‘needledrop.'”

Yes, hands on hips was quite common.
Many coaches had recievers do it as a sort of semi-“set” posiiton, to prevent any arm movement that might have been seen as illegal motion. Other common version was arms at sides.
However, I recall plenty of flankers and split ends (Raymond Berry, Tommy McDonald and Randy Vataha come to mind quickly) who still used the common three-point stance.
Mostly it was individual preference. If I remember correctly, with the Colts, Lenny Moore stood straight up when he was playing flanker, while split end Berry was in three-point on the other side.

Paul, That isn’t the “name on back” (NOB) of the officials. I think it would be considered the “position on back” (POB). It stated which official was which… i.e. “Umpire”, “Referee” & “Side Judge”.
The graphics on those CBS clips may look rinky-dink, but they weren’t. That was state-the-art.
Anybody really rememember the first “Instant Replays”? Pioneered on AFL telecasts, I think (remember one of the first I saw was replay of catch by Oilers Charlie Hennigan). They could show it again at regular speed, but no slo-mo, as such. They could stop and start them, but not a specific places. Would leap forward a fixed number of frames and freeze. Then advance again, and stop. You got to see what was there wherever it stopped.
Things change.

You were not the only one transfixed to the TV once the music started to the CBS and NBC intros, I also experienced a Pavlovian reaction. (Still do!) It was the Sunday morning equal to Monday Night Football’s theme.
As far as the debate between Phyllis and Jayne, Phyllis was OK but for me Jayne Kennedy was it. I had a huge crush on that otherworldly beauty : )
(I was a kid in the Green Bay area, anyone not German, Polish or Irish qualified. In fact, even Italians seemed borderline exotic back then.)
In terms of John Stallworth and hands on the hips it seems that the 70’s was the crossover period where you still had three point stance ‘split ends’ and the new ‘wide receiver’ upright stances.
I remember NBC’s baseball game of the week intro ended with a catcher smiling from behind his mask. Think they used the same music, though I’m not totally sure.
That lever being pulled from the NFL Today intro reminded me of this. Skip to 3:35.

For a few years in the early-to-mid 70s, NBC used that theme music for baseball, football, and even hockey. If you got to MLB.com and check out their free view of the ’75 All-Star game, you hear it. There used to be a clip on YouTube of the hockey theme but I can’t find it.
How about Vin Scully calling football? You get those December afternoons in Minnesota an it’s not a very pleasant good afternoon to you, wherever you may be.

Didn’t see it (or anything else that year ’cause I wasn’t around yet), but I remember reading about it. The one time I won a radio call-in contest, it was for answering that question.
My prize? A “Cow Christmas” CD. We listened to it a few times, but I wasn’t moooved enough to keep it…

’63 seems right, because the Hennigan replay I so vividly recall came late in the season (probably after the Army-Navy game) and was in the home stripeless jersey and single-white-stripe helmet (three white sleeve stripes and additional stripes–two of them red—came with the new Oiler unis in ’64).

And thanks, Paul, for sharing those videos with a wider audience. I remember every Sunday during the 70s watching the NFL Today, even if we watched the NBC game.
I remember Jayne Kennedy, but just barely. I have warm memories of Phyllis (just warm, mind you…I was a mere lad waiting for football), as well as Brent, Irv…even The Greek…and Jack Whitaker’s commentaries.
And of course, if I wasn’t watching the Steelers or Oilers, I was watching whatever game Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier were calling. They seemed like two of my buddies.
I even had fond memories of the beer commercials. I liked Ed McMahon’s “Holiday Greetings from Budweiser” and Natural Light’s “The Beer With the Taste For Food.” Beats the crap out of today’s stock trading and ED commercials…at least most of today’s beer ads are funny.
Whoa, almost time for the “Which Of You Teams Is Most Tired of Sucking Lately?” Bowl (Giants at Vikings).

Could be Hornung:he was a placekicker. Bragg was a punter: Curt Knight was the Skins PK in those days.
Whoa! CBS is counter-programming the Bears game on Fox with a *gasp* NFL game? I was expecting to flip over and see a gardening show or something.

If, for example, it’s CBS and the local NFC team is on the road, that market gets both AFC games…unless, I suppose, local stations have the ability to opt out…which I rather doubt. Don’t think CBS would take kindly to losing, in your case, the Chicago market, no matter how minimal the viewership might be. Just too damn big a market to discard.

Ahhh yes. I was SO geeked out for all this stuff – going back to NBC Baseball in the 1960s. The full half hour pregame shows for 70’s football were must see TV. Pre-merger in Baltimore we had a local pre-taped pregame before kickoff on the CBS afilliate. Seemed to be around 1970 that the national pregame shows took hold.
Jax @ Browns (rd game, so not blacked out) feels like a football game, and looks damn cold.

I do miss Busch Stadium. Yeah, it was a cookie-cutter stadium, but those sunlight arches were so cool. When I think of the Cardinals in the 70s, I think of those arches, diamond patterned endzones, Jim Hart and Roger Wherli. If it wasn’t for Conrad Dobler, they might have been my 2nd-favorite team.

It’s the Cowboys. That much you could put money on(okay, holder could be Danny White; think he held for a time but Waters did for years, and it kinda looks like #41. Also, photo could go back to ’77, which would make it Effern Herrera, who was “portlier” than Septien and did wear bigger pads, as I recall. I’ll amend my earlier comment and say it’s Herrera and Waters).
A) from that particular angle, soccer and straight-on kickers look remarkably alike at moment of impact.
B) kicker’s wearing white shoes. By late ’70s when every NFL team but the Vikings wore white shoes, there weren’t very many straight-on kickers left, especially ones who wore a uni that would come close to matching that one; two wide white sleeve stripes and fairly apparent.

Back to my very cool sold-in-Germany only black with yellow “Gerd Muller Goal” adidas. Some local old German car parts guys sold imported Adidas out of their back room. Once I found out, my whole team went over there, heh. “Saybrook Imports.”

I learned to punt barefoot. My uncle (who’d played for the Gophers) told me it was best way to learn. He was correct. When you strike the ball properly, doesn’t hurt at all. That’s how you know you’re doing it right. When you’ve got that down, you can put your shoe back on.

Yeah, I guess the point of my original post (and the follow-up, for that matter) wasn’t clear. I’m just saying that I’m glad that there’s an alternative available on a day that I’m actually looking for one. Despite the decades of history between the two teams, Bears/Lions isn’t exactly a must-see game on January 3, 2010.
The game doesn’t have a whole lot of playoff implications. About the only thing in question today is whether or not Jay Cutler can break the single-season interception record. I’m pretty sure that’s safe, but 30 isn’t out of the question.

If you’re watching the game in HD and have a 5.1 sound setup, you can get the same effect by simply disconnecting the center channel since that’s the only channel the announcers should be on if the sound is mixed properly. You still get all the crowd noise, officials, etc!

I believe in week 17 both networks have doubleheaders due to the fact there is no Monday night game in week 17. The only reason we are not getting a CBS game in Detroit is the Lions sold out at home thanks to all the Bears fans.
On a sidenote, between all the blackout and Lions injuries this year, I don’t know half the people playing for the Lie downs.

Actually, NOT shocking.
Both networks have had doubleheaders on the final Sunday of the season for the past several seasons.
Two reasons: (1) Since there are 17 Sundays in the season, there needs to be one weekend when both networks have doubleheaders so that each has the same number of doubleheaders; (2) Four games broadcast on the final Sunday gives the most chance of showing games with playoff implications.

Didn’t the Jets and Raiders do the same thing in the past few years? My memory’s fuzzier on that.
The main reason the announcer less game failed, was because it was TOO EARLY – there was no such thing as stereo TV yet. Plus, the Orange Bowl was a very bad place to do it, acoustically speaking – it literally soakied up the sound. I think TODAY, with a good portion of the audience having HD/Surround Sound, the SOA graphics available, it would be an AWESOME thing to revisit.

ref got clocked in the second qtr of the Philly-Cowboys game. his zebra shirt got a serious rip in it. interestingly, the stripes appear to be an overlay stitched over the black shirt – it’s not a black shirt with white stripes screen printed on.

All my buddies used to rail about kickers wearing two different shoes – saw it as a “look at me” thing. Soccer shoes for kicking are drastically different from football shoes, I would tell them. That said, if the soccer shoe was designed and fitted properly, I would see no advantage to kicking barefoot.
I absolutely love how the Seahawks look in the blue jersey and dark navy blue pants.
Warren Sapp was right, Greg Knapp is terrible. Thankfully, this season is over, and the last play of the game pretty much summed it up best for the 2009 Seahawks. Hopefully, the new GM will sack Knapp.

I imagine the barefoot thing is just what a guy is used to. I certainly wasn’t advocating kicking barefoot, just saying that when you’re a kid it’s a great way to learn…or, I suppose, get your technique back again if goes a little south on you.
The “different shoes” rule actually pre-dated Pete Gogolak and those who followed him. It was on the books to allow straight-on kickers to wear a square-toed shoe.

In the last game of 1991, the Raiders and Chiefs played in L.A. already knowing they would play each other in the wild-card round; only question was where, winner would host the game. Chiefs won 27-21 despite Todd Marinovich throwing 3 TDs in his starting debut; the next week in KC, Chiefs won 10-6.

I remember when I was the manager of the high school football team, one of my jobs was to keep track of the kicker’s shoe and tee and the long snappers pullover. The long snapper was a receiver and he need a 50-70 number to long snap back then. I would run the shoe, tee and pull over out after each touchdown.

I had square-toed shoes as a kid, but they were cross-country-ski boots. I never tried using them to kick a football; I kicked soccer-style.

I meant to say BLACK football cleats.
Looking at the Bengals’ ridiculous outfits, it occurs to me that when they made the change to this jersey and pants set they kept the helmet exactly the same. When’s the last time a team did that?
The Bills changed only the center striping pattern and colors; the Cardinals only slightly changed the logo decal. The Falcons changed the logo decal and the Rams changed only the color of the horn decals. The Jaguars changed the helmet shells to the color-reflective metallic paint.
I can’t think of any other team in the AFL/merger era that completely revamped its uniform from the neck down without making any changes to the helmet.

Here’s a screen grab that I bet no one can find …. Jim Zorn #11 for the Cowboys in preseason 1975! Played great in 2 preseason games for the Cowboys, but got cut as they would only keep two QBs back then. If I am not mistaken, WR Steve Largent was also at that Cowboy training camp and also got cut at the end. The rest is Seahawk History.

1-2 companies still make them. There is a Placekicking Website with camps and sideline nets and shoes with links to companies that still make squaretoe kicking shoes. There is a particular shoe, with a huge flat fronyt similar to Tom Dempsey’s shoe, only for full footed kickers, that allegedly adds 10-15 yards to your kicks. Some HS kid from Illinois allegedly made an 83 yd FG with the shoe about 8-10 years ago. He ended up kicking off for the Florida Gators, but never won the FG kicker job.
Once in awhile you can find them on Ebay. I got a pair of Riddell hightops with a square toe shoe, other matching shoe about 3 years ago.

When I was a kid, I told the local shoe salesman I wanted a shoe like Tom Dempsey’s. He politely explained why that wasn’t possible. That would be cool having the shoe you mentioned.
Of course, I could also use something to bring back what little flexibility I once had…

All good examples, although I was thinking more along the lines of a total revamp like the Bengals, rather than tweaks like the Steelers (numeral font), Lions (pants color), Colts (ditto) and Saints (various minor tweaks). The Eagles and Redskins examples are better, particularly the latter.
I have this memory of Jayne Kennedy that is so strange that I would like to know if anybody else remembers it.
One Sunday when I was real young, Dan Pastorini, quarterback of the Houston Oilers, was about to use the first flak jacket to protect his broken ribs.
NFL Today got Jayne Kennedy to wear the flak jacket and a blue floral bikini and nothing else. She looked amazing. Then some guy (the inventor, maybe) hit Jayne with a baseball bat to prove that the thing worked.
Anybody else remember this crazy event?
