Jordan Reveals Longstanding Dream of Playing Hockey

Picture 1.png

Tired of those unsightly Reebok logos on NHL jerseys? So is Michael Jordan! In fact, we could probably eliminate the Reebok mark from the NHL altogether if we just cloned a few hundred Jordans and used them to replace all the players currently on NHL rosters, because MJ ain’t wearin’ no vector.

What’s the deal? According to this column (helpfully sent my way by reader Rachel Bicicchi), Jordan happily donned a Blackhawks jersey at Friday’s ’Hawks/Wings game, “but only after team officials sewed a red patch over the maker’s company logo.”

This isn’t the first time Jordan has engaged in some impromptu uniform modification in order to please the Masters of Swoosh, and I think it’s safe to say it won’t be the last.

Enjoy your Decoration Day, don’t forget the sunscreen, etc., etc. — Paul

On a related note (sorta), I was listening to the Blackhawks postgame on the radio yesterday (Why? I was in the middle of painting and couldn’t get to the radio to change the station).

Best caller: “I knew it was going to be an ugly game when Detroit scored off the celebrity puck drop.”

Has it been discussed that the Braves Jeff Francoeur has been playing lately with his pant’s legs pulled up, showing a lot of navy sock? It was a move to pull himself out of another slump, and it seems to be working. Hopefully he’ll continue the look…not that I like it, but at least it’s something different.

i am tired of seeing michael jordan. he just needs to go away. anytime people start to forget about him, he always has to stick his nose out into the world and get attention. i am tired of his clothing line and everything else.

    Talk about a paradox….

Was channel surfing this morning and came across a comcast broadcast of the Oregon-Arizona game. There was an Oregon player with green stirrups and yellow sanitaries. All the annoucners could do was talk about the sanitaries, comparing the kid to Rick Monday or Rickey Henederson. Sorry, I wasn’t awake enough to catch either the player’s name or details of the game. There were two distince camera shots of the kid that simply showed him from the knees down, bowing to the good thast the didn’t show the rest of the Oregon uniform.

So Paul – how’s that? Stirrups and sanitaries on an Oregon player. Cats and dogs will now lie down together.

Um, that would be “bowing to the good taste that”

    Oops

I hate logo creep too, but not for nuthin’, Jordan is still getting paid LOTS of money by Nike. Would you want to see your very expensive endorser wearing another company’s logo? I think not.

I’ll be sure to tune in!

Jordan also covered the Reebok logo with an American Flag during the medal ceremony during the 1992 Olympics.

Correct, but everything I read says that they do not observe Memorial Day on the same day as the United States. It actually coincides with Canada Day on July 1st. Can any of our Canadian uni-brethren back me up on this?

Nope. Canada Day is equivalent to Independence Day. You gained your independence from the British empire on July 4. We did the same on July 1… different years, though.

LOL… those two are idiots, but they had their hearts in the right place. They were poppied out for the Memorial Cup Final. The Memorial Cup normally ends the day before Memorial Day.

The reason the tournament got its name was due to the trophy itself. The Cup was donated in 1919 by the Ontario Hockey Association in honour of the soldiers who died fighting for Canada in World War I. So Milbury and McGuire went with poppies to remember the soldiers despite the poppies having way more meaning in November.

There is a correlation with Memorial Day there thanks to the schedule, but we don’t celebrate a specific day for fallen members of the armed forces outside of Remembrance Day.

Watching the Yanks-Rangers on MLB TV. The Yankees look completely bizarre with the red lids. Rangers? Somewhat looks like it belongs, since its as close as you can get to their alts.

    Umpires? Bat-shiat crazy.

Just starting to watch the Brewers/Cardinals game and I HAD to check in with this red hat report.

On the Cardinals, they look fine (great, almost). The reds match and it looks good.

On the Brewers, not so much. Especially when they’re playing a team that usually wears red, it’s not a good thing. Yuck.

Here’s the kicker: The umpires are wearing red hats too! The only good thing is that the plate umpire did get one of those hats with a short bill to wear under his mask. That’s good, but they look like crap in general.

    Bad idea (aesthetically). Ditch ’em!

The Texases look fine. Kinsler’s got the red socks and Teagarden’s got the red gear on.

Maybe the umps should have gone with red “throwback” shirts like they used to wear on occasion about 10-15 years ago.

    The Yankees? Yikes.

Royals v Tigers – Tigers don’t look terrible in the red caps, on TV at least it almost looks like they match the outline on the script/numbers. The Royals, however, in their powder blue alt tops look absolutely wretched with the caps.

only game i can get is yanks (who don’t look horrible, but rather, like they lost their caps in transit) vs. texases (who don’t look any different than when they wear their red caps anyway) … nice to actually see the yanks without that stupid giant NYS patch on the back of their heads, however…the question still remains…

    why is this necessary again?

Unfortunately the T is horribly off-center in the pic they display. I have seen hats like this that have a big (and wrong era/later 80s) Rangers logo on the back (which I didn’t like), and you can’t tell if this one has that or not.

They also sell this one at mlb.com, but it doesn’t look accurate at all, and it’s a “wool blend” and made by American Needle.

    also says it’s backordered.

Well, found it on Google. But I’ve got a purty big head and I’d have to find one in person so I could try it on. You wouldn’t believe how long it took to find just the right 49ers cap!

What I’d really like to have is a Rangers T-shirt with that original jersey design:

    link

I take that back, it’s backordered in most sizes, but 7 5/8 is available if you have a larger gourd.

Well, I’ll tell ya, my friend is the clubhouse mgr for the Reds- he let me in the storeroom, “take anything ya like.” (Imagine that.) COuldn’t find a hat to fit. And it is 7 5/8. Me, relief pitcher Lee Smith….and..Johnny Bench. Biggest hat sizes he’d ever seen. I guess that’s an honor.

If you see a 72 Rangers T…give me a shout!

I’m with ya. Plus hat sizing can be very flakey. I can wear a fitted hat in anything from a 7 1/2 to a 7 3/4. That’s why I headed to the fan shop to try them on. This Rangers hat is just a smidge large and it’s a 7 5/8.

I was also a Reds fan during their white/red pinstripe hat days, and it took me forever to find a hat to buy because the pinstripes were NEVER lined up correctly! It drove my mom crazy.

Turned on the Braves @ Giants game..and I went WTF?
Then I remembered….Red Hat Day. Looks weird to have a red cap on the G-Men.

This may sound sacrilegious, but I actually think the red cap is an improvement over the mismatched shade of blue the Yanks wore last year. To make the uniform complete though, they need to match the caps with red stirrups.

According to the broadcasters of today’s O’s/Jays game and Yanks/Rangers, all proceeds will go to the Welcome Back Vets fund and if you order online an additional dollar will be donated. Fyi, don’t know if it’s the party line.

    Military Recognition/Memorial Day done right.

Just got back from taking my daughters (7 and 5) to a Huntsville Stars game vs. the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx. Every Monday game in Huntsville is Military Recognition Day, where everyone with an ID gets in for a buck. The lady at the ticket window asked if I was military and I said “I used to be” to which she replied “That’s good enough for me”. 3 tickets, $3.

For the 7th inning stretch they bypassed the singing of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”, instead observing a moment of silence followed by the playing of “Taps”. I was a blubbering mess after Taps and had to explain to my girls why they wouldn’t be hearing one of their favorite songs. I made sure they understood.

Made me think of the money grab that MLB performs in the name of recognizing the troops.

Uni-wise, it was softball vs. softball but at least the local nine went high-cuffed. They appeared to be tailored that way. No special hats in the minors, I guess.

And to add one of my opinions: it’s disgusting that the umpires also have the red hats. Even though I’ve yet to see a red ump hat for retail sale, it makes it look like the umpires have sold out and compromised their integrity. If that doesn’t turn your stomach, nothing can.

Went to see Dodgers/Rockies. Got halfprice club level seats, which was good. Forty minute rain delay at Coors today, so we visited the bar where a kid I remember from grade school was pouring. That was the highlight of the day.

LI Phil linked the pic of Helton before the game receiving recognition for his 2000th hit. He didn’t look as bad as some others. The starting pitcher and left fielder each went high-cuffed. The red, white and black made me think of the San Diego State Aztecs, who could have outplayed the Rox today. We left during the eight run top of the seventh (after a seven run top of the fourth), an inning that included two of the worst defensive plays I’ve seen in professional ball — even counting AAA.

Poor Juan Pierre, with the oversized red hat and the blue stirrups looked like he belonged on the link. This was Selig’s lowest trick yet, which says a lot.

Forgot to mention that two fans were wearing the red abominations. One was an angry middle aged man a few rows in front of us. One was a cute twentyish girl in line for nachos. I was quite upset that anyone would buy and wear these stupid hats. Still, out of about 27k people, I guess 2 isn’t as bad as it could have been.

I don’t know who did it or why (just flipped over to WGN from the NBA game for a moment), but somebody on the Cubs apparently took it upon himself to express his displeasure at whatever by destroying the casing of the Gatorade “fountain drink” machine in the dugout. Whats-his-name and Brenly spent a few moments talking about it in the 3rd inning and the cameras got a few good shots. Zambrano started clowning around with it too. I was entertained.

Not really a uni-related happening, but I figured dugout equipment was pretty close…

I knew the red caps would be bad luck for the Rays. Our biggest rival wears red, we lost the World Series to a team with a red cap, who thought this would be a good idea? We blew a 10-f***ing-run lead. TO CLEVELAND.

what’s grammatically incorrect about “expect bankruptcy”?
Nothing, but I believe it’s “Expect Fold”.

    Mr. T is gonna sing.
I missed it! Thats gonna be epic YouTube gold.
It was everything I expected and more.

If someone doesn’t YouTube it soon I will have to do it myself.

I was wondering about that Gatorade Big Gulp machine when I noticed Ryan Theriot getting a drink earlier tonight. Is it new? I don’t recall seeing it before (in any dugout, not just at Bud Light Bleachers Stadium).

BTW, Len Kasper is the play-by-play guy’s name and he just pointed out that Carlos Zambrano is wearing a single batting glove on his top hand. He was batting left-handed, so the glove was on his left hand. (Maybe he was expecting the Pirates to bring in a lefty? A pitching change was made, but a righty was brought in.)

Oh, and earlier tonight, they showed a side-by-side photo of Nyjer Morgan (back in stirrups tonight after going jammystyle yesterday) and Juan Pierre. No specific mention of the stirrups, but there were comments like “old school” thrown around.

Nyjer Morgan just fouled a ball off his ankle in the 8th inning and writhed around on the ground a little bit. As he was starting to get up I noticed he had a strip of athletic tape at the top of his stirrups. I’m assuming it’s to hold the hosiery in place and it’s usually covered up by the pants. Is this normal for big-league stirrup wearers?

I think the Gatorade fountains are new this year. I remember seeing them during Cubs games much earlier this year and thinking that it was a tremendous excess that didn’t need to be there.

Also, thanks on Kasper’s name. If I didn’t despise the Cubbies so (Brewer fan) I might care to remember that. ;)

    Something I just noticed:

The Padres’ stars and stripes caps actually have the older logo.

The current “SD” logo has link while the stars and stripes cap link.

The red caps or the blue caps still don’t look as bad as the baseball bell-bottomed trousers they are wearing.

In today’s pick on the Nats item, the Nats couldn’t be troubled to wear red sleeves or socks with their red hats on the road. That would have actually looked good.

Since Memorial Day is a day to remember those who died in military service, this would seem to be the one occasion for which black would be the appropriate tribute. Not necessarily monkeying about with the caps, but a uniform black armband worn over a white or gray jersey. Thoughts?

Nyjer Morgan is my new least-favorite MLB player.

I know, I know, stirrups, blah blah blah. Get a uniform that fits and bend that frigging brim. The Our Gang look isn’t making it.
