Going Above and Beyond the Call of Uni Watch Duty

Frank in Action.jpg

Frank Mercogliano is the media relations czar at Idaho State (that’s him at right, holding a press conference while surrounded by marks of the beast), but he’s also a serious uniform guy. He designed the football team’s helmet logo, and he often spots interesting uni details on other teams — unusual, since most media relations folks are fixated on their own teams.

Case in point: During last Saturday’s football game between Idaho State and Portland State, Frank spotted lots of eccentric NOB action on the Portland State team, so he went over to the Portland State sideline to document it for the rest of us. “I have to be on the field at the end of the game for interviews,” he explains, “so I snuck into their team area and took some photos. The toughest thing was running from the field to the pressbox to get my camera, because it was a lot of steps.”

Now that’s devotion. Here’s Frank’s rundown of the Portland State oddities:

• “Erik Pedersen and Ryan Pedersen (who aren’t brothers) both entered Portland State at the same time, but only one of them gets an initial. I had two separate photos of them before they stood together.”

• “KJ McCrae is technically wearing a FNOB, except for some reason he has a period after the J, even though his name is KJ (it’s not an abbreviation). Also: The first ”˜C’ in McCrae should be lowercase, but it isn’t. I thought he was going to kill me for being in their team area, but when I told him I wanted a picture of the back of his jersey, he said, ‘You got it’ and turned around. They were about to finish a 36-13 win over us in which they passed, for 535 yards, so he was pretty much up for anything at that point.”

• “The pièce de résistance is Johnathan Benjamin-Nichols. He has his first initial, even though there are no other Benjamin-Nicholses on the team, and then it’s an abbreviated Benjamin, but with a hyphen instead of a period. Holy shit, right?”

Yes, well, that’s certainly one way of describing it. At the very least, I’d say Portland State’s equipment staff could use a remedial course in punctuation. Meanwhile, let’s all buy Frank a beer or something (everyone just give him a little sip of yours and it’ll all add up to one beer, simple!) in recognition of his stalwart efforts last weekend.

Signal Flare: Yo, Dave Graf, please give me a shout. Thanks.

Uni Watch News Ticker: I won this the other day on eBay (simple but nice, right?). After I sent my payment and shipping information, I got a note from the seller, Aaron Stoker: “I have to say I was surprised by the name I saw as the winning bidder. I love your site and I’m honored to have sold this jersey to you. Enjoy!” To my knowledge, this is the first all-Uni Watch eBay transaction. ”¦ Very odd find by Glenn Cook, who was covering a high school football game in Canada and spotted a player with one block numeral and one non-block. ”¦ A few weeks ago I linked to this article about the designer who created the NHL’s Winter Classic logo, but you couldn’t really see the developmental designs on the floor in front of him. Now, thanks to Steve Stovall, I have a much larger version of the photo, which reveals some interesting work. ”¦ Has there ever been a more lopsided accessory-to-logo ratio as on Demetrius Williams’s armband? (Good spot by Dylan Horowitz.) ”¦ Barack Obama was presented with a Steelers jersey the other day. ”¦ And in the interests of equal time, here’s history’s scariest goalie mask (with thanks to Roger Faso). ”¦ You may have noticed that Pepsi has a new logo. There’s a really cool video clip showing the brand’s design history here (with thanks to Mark Dziak). ”¦ By now you probably know that Marshall wore green helmets on Tuesday night. What you might not know is that the helmets won them the game (with thanks to Chris Mycoskie). ”¦ Final uni-related note of the MLB season: J.P. Howell wore Willy Aybar’s helmet last night (with thanks to Travis Church and Aaron Whitlow). ”¦ Check out the card at lower right — an early Pedro porthole! (Good spot by Ben Kramer.) ”¦ The Rockets wore red at home last night (with thanks to Brandon Hamburg). … A year after his death, Sean Taylor is still the source of uni-related fines: According to a small item at the end of this page, Steelers safety Ryan Clark (who played alongside Taylor on the Redskins in 2004 and ’05) was fined $5000 for wearing eye black stickers with a memorial “21” etched into them (with thanks to Chris Hilf). ”¦ Adam Gerard attended last night’s Wizards/Nets game and captured the NBA debut of Chris Douglas-Roberts and his remarkable NOB. ”¦ This article (forwarded by Jeff Janssens) suggests that Darren McFadden’s turf toe injury might be due to a change in footwear brands. Key passage: “McFadden wore adidas cleats in college and the Raiders wear Nike. McFadden said Nike has been contacted and, ‘we’re going to have something working up.'” Wait a minute — “the Raiders wear Nike”? I don’t know anything about turf toe, but I do know that NFL clubs don’t have team-specific footwear contracts, as the guy who wrote that article could have known if he simply looked at some photos. Jeez. … Congrats to Morris, Jared, Bill, Peter, and all our other Philly readers — enjoy.

Hockey News’ Top 10 ‘Scariest’ Hockey masks

    link

Glad to see #5 made the list, seeing it’s my favorite hockey mask of all time.

Kind of disapointted with #1, I think other masks are scarier…

Great report by Mr. Mercogliano. Great example of on-the-scene uni watching.

The folks at Portland State should be embarrased by those name treatments. Just terrible.

“Erik Pederson and Ryan Pedersen (who aren’t brothers) both entered Portland State . . . ”

    Should read “Erik Pedersen”

    That’s all.

That block number/non-block number combo also carries over to the sleeve. Looks like a 3 from the 80s SF Giants collection.

Looks like the Orioles are doing much more than just putting Baltimore back on the road jersey…

    link

when team officials use the word “modernize” it always scares me!

I like the Palin mask, but then again I like Palin. I hate the Steelers, and I hate Obama. Funny how that works out.

So I was watching a Scubs rerun last night when I was let in on what the world thinks of us. I pulled the transcript from the net of the moment in the show I’m talking about….
    ————

    DR. KELSO’S OFFICE
He’s in a track suit, working out on his stair machine. Tyler wanders in to watch.

    Tyler: Is that fun?

Dr. Kelso: No, son. It’s work. But this body didn’t happen by accident.

Tyler: Well, you know what I think is fun? Baseball.

Dr. Kelso: My son is a big baseball fan. Not so much playing it, but more the designing and sewing of uniforms.

    Tyler: That’s neat.

    Dr. Kelso: No, it’s not.

A few notes about this pic:

    1. One of the Pedersons, #53, is wearing the Nike Strait Jacket. It’s a spat for your cleats.

    link

And I STRONGLY DISLIKE when injured players are on the sidelines in their jerseys and jeans, ala #59. Very bush league. They should be wearing some team or institution deemed warm up suit or SOMETHING!

I also like the Palin mask, but not for the reasons you “free thinkers” do. I once had respect for her running mate, but that’s long gone.

I never thought I’d actually long for a Vice Presidential candidate with actual qualifications — Dan Quayle comes to mind.

I’ve rarely been following the US Hype Machine (aka your election), but this “Hockey Mom” crap with Palin has got to stop.

She was going to go jogging in Philly in a New York Rangers jersey a few weeks back, and was saved by two Philadelphia citizens who informed her that her choice of clothing was a poor one(I believe the story was linked on this site). Have any prospective Veeps been assassinated before they took office? Because I’m pretty sure that Palin would have been had she made it out of the hotel in a Rangers jersey. Any “hockey mom” should have, and would have, known that.

Secondly, if you are a hockey mom, does the joke about wearing lipstick really make you proud? I mean, she only insulted every red-blooded American hockey mom by calling them “dogs”. You know, that’s normal Veep chatter during a rally.

Thirdly, NHL owners should not be lobbying for politicians in front of 15,000+ fans. By throwing their support behind one person or another, they could influence the undecided. In fact, some owners have now outlawed the discussion of politics in the dressing room over fears of dividing the locker room –> see: Browns, Cleveland, and Crennel, Romeo.

All in all, Palin’s claim to be a hockey mom needs to end sooner than later. Quite frankly, if you can’t get elected on the basis of your campaign, you should not be allowed to win votes by “being cute” and “representing hockey moms”.

I’m Teebz, I don’t have a political campaign, I wish both candidates well, to the winner go the spoils, and I approve this message. LOL

Is she supposed to decline the jerseys when offered? That wouldn’t be politically savvy, either. Most politicians are guilty of that.

Trying to “win votes nationally through the hockey world” is not a very sound strategy, obviously.

That might be the very first time I’ve ever heard an American call hockey “an American sport”. Good on you for it, Chris!

However, she has no ties to the Dayton Bombers aside from being a “hockey mom”. I have $5 right here that says she can’t name what league they play in despite the Bombers playing in the same league as the Alaska Aces. Except it’s $5 CDN, meaning it’s about $2.50 USD. LOL

She can be a hockey mom all she wants. I have no issue with her supporting her kids in their athletic ventures. But she needs to stop using the “hockey mom” title as a crutch to gain votes. It isn’t going to help her if she succeeds to get into office. She’ll simply have a closet full of jerseys from teams that have no meaning to her.

Simmer down Teebz. Maybe I didn’t explain myself. I wasn’t calling hockey an American sport. I was remarking on how futile her attempt to get votes for supporting hockey would be. She should associate herself with an “actual” American sport like baseball, football, or basketball. I love my Predators but don’t care about the rest of the NHL. Sorry to let you down.

For those that can’t read Cyrillic, it would be tough to pronounce players’ names if you didn’t know the Cyrillic alphabet. For example, John Grahame, playing in the KHL, has his name translated to “Dzhon Grem” according to the Cyrillic alphabet. Jaromir Jagr is “Yaromir Yagr”. Wade Dubielewicz is “Ueyd Dubelevich”.

At least that’s what I’ve been told, anyway.

Anyone wanna take a trip to Guatamala? I want to get my hands on the Rays World Series Champion gear to add to my AL East Champion gear and AL Champion gear.

As an aside, the Predators, from what I’ve been reading, are in a far better situation than some of the NHL teams currently. Despite their ownership problems, they don’t have some of the problems other teams have, namely making payroll. Keep supporting them – they are a solid Western Conference team.

As for the futility, I agree. That’s what I’m saying about her use of the term – it’s wrong on so many levels.

That’s it – all baseball playoff caps (the NFL does this too) were made with a standardized design, then had the team logo added. That’s the way it’s been for years.

    Another point from the game:

Marshalls’ running back was Darius Marshall, thus causing a “Playing for the back of the jersey” conundrum.

It caught my attention at first because one of my teammates, and good friends, in college was also named Darius Marshall.

After college, he worked at the UN and on 9/11 was walking out of a Borders Bookstore and was knocked out by debris and was missing for hours.

He fortunately survived, however was killed in the freak Staten Island Ferry accident.

Quick comment on the adidas/Nike thing with Darren McFadden. Correct me, Mister Powers you may be able to help with this, but when he announced he was going pro, Nike signed him up to a major contract. The cleats he wore in college, his adidas ones, were made specifically for him. The University of Arkansas is an adidas school so all of their athletes probably get customized measurements for their shoes. My question is, if he is complaining about his toe injury and somehow linking it to his shoes, which I don’t think he is, wouldn’t Nike try to replicate the measurements adidas did for his cleats?

    Absolutely!

When an athlete signs with a company, that company makes a mold, a last, of the athletes’ foot and then manufactures customized shoes for said athlete as to their specifications: colors, special promotion type events, such as the Celtics Banner night, etc.

The NFL has a shoe and apparel deal with Reebok. Players are allowed to wear Nike and Under Armour shoes because those companies are licensed by the NFL to outfit them. I believe that only Nike, besides Reebok, is allowed to outfit the players with gloves, but Under Armour might be as well.

As was the case with Randy Moss wearing Pony cleats…the logo had to be obscured, or blank. This is also the case with the NFLers wearing Jordan Brand cleats, Air Jordan Retro cleats without the Jumpman logo.

Reggie Bush, at Adidas behest, wears Adidas cleats and gloves with VERY visible branding. Adidas guesses that the free advertising that the fines bring will provide a good return on investment!

I really can’t even say how much I love those new Pepsi logos/bottle designs. Not so much the MTNDW, but I really really like the others.

I think that is pretty much the opposite of every other opinion I have heard. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard close to outrage from a lot of people about the new logos and bottle design for the Pepsi brand and people enjoying the MTN Dew branding and bottle design.

I actually really like the new Pepsi logos. The way the “smile” changes for Diet, Pepsi, and Max is kind of endearing to me, whether it’s sending an odd comment on increased happiness with increased caffeine, which I’m sure isn’t what they were going for.

Correct. Which is why I wonder why Nike couldn’t copy the adidas specs that he had in college. I mean, Nike, as with most shoe companies, has the capability to design footwear to the athlete’s liking. In McFadden’s case, it seems like he had several foot related injuries in college so he requested a wider shoe with a higher arc. I am surprised he didn’t request the same from Nike.

Regarding the Celtics gold trim and championship patches in general:

I’ve always thought it would be cool if the team that wins the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, Stanley Cup and World Series wore some sort of uniform element signifying their championship for the entire following season.

No scan, but I was flipping through the NBA Preview edition of SI when I saw a pic of Brian Urlacher (pages 30-31). If you look closely at his QB-style wristband, you can an see that he wrote “BE AN ASSHOLE!” in marker along the bottom. I like that in a linebacker.

Maybe I just missed this because I haven’t watched a lot of NBA action since Jordan played for the Bulls, but I watched the Celtics/Cavaliers game on opening night to get a glimpse of these gold-trimmed jerseys the C’s wore, and I was disturbed by what I saw on the floor. Not only was the celtics.com logo on two corners of the floor (a disgrace to the finest basketball floor in the NBA, even though as I said I don’t watch much), but also the name of the arena (TD Banknorth Garden) was on either end of the floor. Whatever happened to having the team name along the baselines? Is this common these days? I couldn’t imagine an NFL team doing likewise in the endzones. Just bothered me to see this, but I imagine it’s been going on for awhile and I am just now realizing it. I know the Brewers advertised their website on the pitching mound this year, but that at least could be fixed with a well-timed swipe of the foot by the opposing pitcher.

she couldn’t tell you . . . the difference between Ronaldo, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ronaldinho.

No, no! The Orioles script has to stay! The cursive O is the most recognizable aspect to the team. I was always for the team to wear black hats with just the cursive O on them. They came close with their now Friday hat, but they made the O to big and added an ‘s to it. I think the bird logo is fine for a sleeve patch, but not on a hat. I always wondered who outside of Maryland would purposely by that hat? Thats why you see so many non-fans of teams wear the classic hats with symbols on them like the Yankees NY, the Boston B, etc.

The remodel done a few years ago has freshened the place up. I spent many a day and evening there in the late 1960s through mid-70s. Absolutely loved the place.

It used to have a funky added section that was where left through center field is now. Totally separate from the rest of the stands, about 10 rows deep and maybe 30 feet above the field. Had it’s own personality.

Used to host the Civil War between Oregon and Oregon State. But in my mind it was never more packed or exciting that it was for the Portland Timbers of the old NASL. It all peaked in 1975 with the fire marshall looking the other way while over 35,000 jammed into the 27,000-seat facility (several thousand on field level behind ropes).

In the block/rounded numeral HS pic…even the block numbers don’t even seem to match up. Look at the 6 and the 2, specifically the space between the vertical segments at the top. Proportionally, much more empty space on the 2 than the 6–I doubt those are from the same font.

Maybe this was a practice, and their practice uniforms were just cobbled together from whatever was lying around?

Yeah, I agree they are losing their identity with this new set. If you watch that video Paul linked to you can see that Pepsi has been slowly losing the “soul” of their brand for a few years now. It seems like every time Pepsi rebrands themselves, they lose a bit of who they are.
I’m not sure what’s worse, political commentary on this site or links to rugby and/or soccer “kits”
Soccer “kits” are uniforms.

There’s been a bit of talk of the Boston Celtics and the new trim being a nod to their victory season. Coincidentally, the “soccer” team Celtic FC from Glasgow, Scotland ( from which the original New York Celtics were likely to have taken their name ) also adopted a gold trim at the beginning of the current season to complement the traditional green and white hooped shirt.

As for championship winning teams having distinctive league patches to mark the achievement and distinguish them from the crowd, again that’s common in soccer. In Scotland and England, the sleeve patches for champions usually have some sort of gold accent compared to the drab versions worn by the also-rans.

The best example of this distinction would be from Serie A, Italy’s top “Calcio” division. The winners of this soccer/football championship, a feat known locally as “lifting the Scudetto”, are entitled to wear a small shield patch in the colours of the Italian flag on their shirts the next season.

Warning! link to soccer kit coming up:
    link

The Italians also have a roundel / cockade patch in the same colours which the winners of the domestic knockout competition, the Coppa Italia, are allowed to sport the season after.

Then of course there are the star marks for lifting ten Scudettos… the Italians are big on calcio and big on tradition.

I think they were the only two IIRC
I seem to recall the Royals wearing caps with gray crowns. No?

And didn’t the Dodgers have alternate caps with gray brims at one point? I want to say that they paired them with blue jerseys.
the royals grey-crowned cap rings a bell too – maybe for a game or two
It was the official road cap for 1995. I don’t remember if they made the whole season but they were used for most of it: link

Anyone know who the sleeve patch was for?

Three different logos, different colors for regular Pepsi, Pepsi Max, diet Pepsi, and gold for caffeine free. Also, by the sound of things, you either LOVE them or HATE them, no middle ground.
I’m kinda meh on them… Should have stuck with the old one though, they had a lot of identity with that one that’s not going to translate to this one, it’s too different.
Yeah, I agree they are losing their identity with this new set. If you watch that video Paul linked to you can see that Pepsi has been slowly losing the “soul” of their brand for a few years now. It seems like every time Pepsi rebrands themselves, they lose a bit of who they are.
I’m sure link is less than thrilled with the new direction.
That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the new logo(s)! It’s nice to find another pro wrestling fan here on Uni Watch.

One of the south florida defenders had to change pants in the middle of the third quarter. He just dropped trou on the sidelines.

Now the question is: will the 49ers be studying the game tape?

Paul- Thanks for your tip of the hat to me and your other Philadelphia fans on the Phillies’ victory in the World Series. (it still feels funny to see THAT in print!) You are a class act.

On the way home from work listening to Doug Gottlieb interview the President of Operations for the Celtics, Rich ??? on ESPN The Radio. Gottlieb asks about the gold trimmed unis for opening night, wondering if the tradition rich fans had anything to say good or bad about the change. Mr. President said he didn’t think anyone really noticed the change. When asked about the black alts, he said they will be sticking around because the players love the contemporary look.

    So out of touch….

Here’s a question: If the players like the black-trimmed alternates, who is out of touch? Don’t get me wrong, I think those Boston alts are hideous but I’m a 32 year old suburbanite.

Just wanted to address a couple things mentioned,

I’m pretty positive those are actually nike football vapor jets, dyed or custom made in a navy colourway.. Interesting find though.

And: the Raiders have no deal with Nike. How anyone especially this writers think they do is beyond me. Nike had to push to get a swoosh on players’ gloves, and people think the nfl would still allow a team deal? No way!

I know it isn’t uni-related but here is some info on the stadium in portland.

PGE park was originally built on the site of an old dog track. It was intended to be a full horseshoe type stadium for football use. However, the city would not allow them to build over a section of Morrison st. The resulting stadium turned out to be a descent multi-purpose.

Anyway, now the stadium is shared by the Portland Beavers (AAA), Portland Timbers (USL), and PSU football (1-AA). Currently there is a proposal to move the beavers to a baseball only stadium across town and fill in the PGE outfield with seats in order to send the Timbers to MLS.

And did anyone else notice in this pic that the number for the stadium is like one of those Hollywood numbers…

Don’t know if anyone picked this up but….the last 13 WS Champs have either worn a hat that is either in the “family of red”, or a color that is either black or a very dark navy blue:

    2008- Phillies (Red Hat)
2007- Red Sox (Red/Navy Blue Hat)
    2006- Cardinals (Red Hat)
    2005- White Sox (Black Hat)
    2004- Red Sox
    2003- Marlins (Black Hat)
    2002- Angels (Red Hat)
    2001- Diamondbacks (Road Hat- Black)
2000- Yankees- (Navy Hat, but looks like black)
    1999- Yankees
    1998- Yankees
    1997- Marlins
    1996- Yankees

This research possibly shows us two things- dark colors and red are popular in MLB, or the very good teams wear dark colors and red and the rest of the teams will be switching to these colors in the near future….

A few years back, with subtle differences, such as a clear sole, it was released as the Zoom Trainer 1, a cross-trainer based on the Air Trainer 1.

Those gray Nike cross-trainers were THE BEST.
Comfortable beyond belief, and they took a LONG time to wear out; great for me who mostly always played on hard courts. McEnroe saw em one day on a tour of the campus, they were just prototypes, and started wearing them. While Mac was a high-profile Nike guy, he never had a signature shoe. In fact, I don’t think any player has ever had a shoe with his name on it; IE the Air Agassi.
Sampras was associated with the Air Oscillate, but even then, he would wear Wilson shoes with a swoosh.
The San Francisco Chronicle’s Raiders beat writer states in today’s paper that McFadden has a deal with Nike and the Raiders have a team deal with Nike. If that’s the case, then they’re stuck with Nike having to fix the shoe. Kind of a bad situation to be in with one of your high profile marquee players beholden to a shoe contract that is possibly affecting his performance. The worst kind of logo creep!
Thank you Paul, for the continued fine job.
I have a hard time believing this. A team with a shoe deal? In the NFL? Nah. Judging from how far downhill the Chron website has fallen, I wouldn’t take this info as gospel.

Oh, and that TOTALLY explains the Cubs’ problems.

A scarier goalie mask would be a big NObama piece with a hammer and sickle on the side and the words “Union of Socialist States of America” on the chin piece.
