On Hi-Hat: Dave Trembley

capt.2fcf9d21c91a41eda272ea62e605e719.athletics_orioles_baseball_bab102.jpg

We’ve made plenty of note here at Uni Watch about the idiotic unfortunate flat-bill look currently being practiced by Chamberlain, Sherrill, and company. And I’m sure at some point we’ve talked about Joe Torre’s tall cap. It’s like Lincoln’s stovepipe top hat. I bet he keeps his keys and wallet in there.

So with those two distinct styles identified, exactly what is being displayed here by Orioles manager Dave Trembley? The bill is mostly flat, but not all the way. It’s certainly tall, too.

Is it a full-blown Torre? What do we call that bill? Fear of commitment? — Bryan

It seems to me that older people perch their hats on their heads, and it should be considered a Torre if the length from the top of the ear to the bottom of the crown is an inch or more.

Subject of hats reminds of Lou Holtz.
When he was on the sidelines, I always wondered if his head was really small or his hats were really big.

That’s a “back pocket” extraordinaire. The brim with the crease down the center … he’ll take ‘er off and put ‘er in his back pocket.

What a shock to see my O’s this morning on uniwatch, since we are in the midst of our annual late season swoon. Teams should hire a designated bill bender. At least Trembley has another year to get it right (just got his extension). Have to agree about the orange tops. Make them pullovers and it would be perfect.

Trembley rocks his hat “grandpa style”. It’s high as can be, and not “ghetto flat”. Just a little bit of a bend, to make it clear he’s no gangsta. The “grandpa style” hat makes it clear that he’s an old school baseball guy, who preaches fundamentals and hard-nosed play. At night, he likes to sip on Chivas, eat top-cut steak, and watch old war movies.

I love the way Trembley rocks his hat, b/c it reminds me of my grandfather and his friends.

    RIP, Pop.

Considering how the whole Joe Smith thing went here with the Timberwolves, is a fitting choice of colors…to say the least.

Thunder? Cyclones? Hmmm, maybe one the other names they considered was “Farts-In-A-Windstorm”.

Probably figured was too long for a jersey, though.

Lost in all this discussion of Torre’s & Trembley’s caps is the utter ridiculousness of having managers/coaches wear uniforms.
It’s time to end this silly practice, and get these guys some big-boy clothes.

My question is how do all MLB players not look like Torre? I bought a 5950 and the crown of the thing is huge. I have run it through several laundry cyles and worn it through a few softball games in 90+ degree heat and I still can’t break the damn thing in. I know an article was linked here about “hat surgery” but I don’t really want to take a scissors to a new $35 hat.

    Found a great website.

The hat surgery won’t work on the new polyester 5950 caps; only the old wool ones.

I did it to all the wool 5950’s I had and while I had some reservations at first, after the first one the difference was huge. No more “trucker cap” look and they fit like the Franchise caps.

I don’t necessarily personally disagree, but baseball IS different from the other (major) sports in regard to coaches. 1st & 3rd base coaches are literally “on-field” personnel. Everybody on the field wears a uniform. Just because the ascetics of it bother many doesn’t necessarily mean it’s ridiculous or need to be addressed.

Yes, this would look much better:

Re the flat bill…I believe the “pioneers” in the current era are Tony LaRussa and especially Lou Pinella. You can look at photos of them from the 90s and their caps look like they were just lifted from the box.

Just caught highlights of Illinois in their “Butkus era” gear. Fun. Never saw that uni in color before, at least other than in stills.

I think they didn’t wear to the white pants at home until Butkus was gone, tough. I dunno, maybe they did wear them his senior year. Before that was old gold…which was supposed to be close to orange, I guess.

    link

I am going to have to digress for a moment.

Yesterday, I posted Nikes new velcro spat strap:
    link

Later during the day, some of us started commenting on whether we liked them or not, even quoting films, such as “White Men Can’t Jump”.

The discussion prompted LarenR to make this point:

So, Nike got tired of players taping over their swoosh. Their first solution was to put the logo on the toe (I don’t have time to find a pic…I’m sure Sir Powers can hook us up), and now they’ve said, “wait a second, lets just put a giant swoosh on the tape (well, tape-substitute).”

Interestingly enough, LI Phil posted this pic as evidence:
    link

Which eventually prompted LarenR to post a pic of the Nike Air Zoom Apocalypse 4, one of my top 3 fave cleats of all-time:
    link

LI Phil later returned with this photo:
    link

He unwittingly posted pics of the same Shoe albeit, one is the turf version, and the other is the molded “shark version”.

Love them or hate them (or, like me, fall somewhere in the middle), there is no denying that the folks in Nikeland are marketing geniuses!

I went to the local high school’s Pep Rally with my wife and daughters last night and then out to dinner with my wife, so unfortunately I had to rearrange my priorities and NOT CHECK IN ON UW!

    Here it is:

Not only did Nike realize that their football athletes were taping over their logo in the name of structural integrity, because of the disturbing trend of baseball players wearing their pants like pajamas, their rear justified logos were being obscured as well.

So this trend is not one sport specific!

Within this thread on Niketalk, there are tow desighnerd from Easton who complain about the difficulties in altering their mindsets with this!
    link

    Like so:
    link

By the way, check out Jason Taylor’s Air Jordan III Player Exclusive TD Plate cleats from the other night:
    link

And so. (turns out I did have time for a quick search…)

    and cetera

    actually…this one looks frikkin schweet

It is at least in the flow of the pattern… which is better than most Nike swooshes.

Also, I couldn’t disagree more on the thought of the Orioles and orange tops. Orange is wonderful as an accent color…and when used in a tempered way (think University of Texas’ burnt orange) as a main color…but otherwise it is way too loud for my taste. To each his/her own, though…I guess.

Maybe the NFL coaches should go back to suits instead of looking like hobos, including the Coach Belichick, but he could just cut the sleeves down.

I have to agree that Trembley definitely looks old school, because when I am around my dad and his friends (50s-60s) they all sport the same look on their caps.
Orange is an odd color to hope for, but back when the O’s were good, orange was their alternate uni.

To the guys looking to break in a 5950… Wear it in the shower. Turn it inside out, put it on that way in the shower. Do the switch from wearing it inside out, to regular a few times. Work that section of the hat that sits “high”, and when you’re done…let it sit out. Wear it wet, if you can. The hat will come out looking good. Once it dries, if you want, you can cut out the “plastic stuff” on the inside. If you wear it in the shower AGAIN, it’ll really break in. Just be careful with the scissors, you don’t want to cut through it. Feel free to bend the brim, how you like it, in the shower as well.

I’ve done this for a bunch of 5950’s, and it works great. The fabric doesn’t run, and it shouldn’t shrink. To be safe though, if you are an “in between” size, err to the bigger one.

True…no 4940s in games but the 5950s really do not shrink like old ones did. What most people don’t realize is that New Era makes a “low crown” version of the 5950s that are IMPOSSIBLE to find anywhere but from New Era directly.

I had the misfortune of buying one of the new 5950s last season and tried to do the “surgery” like I had for many years prior and it came out HORRIBLE. I know an article was linked here about “hat surgery” but I don’t really want to take a scissors to a new $35 hat.

Need to define terms here. The new synthetic-fabric 5950s do not shrink like the old wool ones. So you have to buy one that fits your head on day one without counting on any “break-in” routine to shrink it to your head.

That’s a separate issue from removing the stiff backing of buckram-and-plastic-wire that makes the front of a 5950 stand up like a billboard. That’s easy to remove from the new synthetic 5950s, if you do it carefully. Once you take that stiff backing off, the whole cap is soft and comfy. Eliminates the stovepipe effect, except for those who perch their caps two inches above their ears like they’re dressing for the Old Country Buffet. If you wear your cap that high on your head, there’s no helping you. But for everyone else, it’s worth the elbow grease to take the backing out.

(Also, the reason you should never take a scissors to a $35 cap is that you should never pay $35 for a 5950. It’s really not that hard to find 5950s for under $25.)

Roper threw an interception and my Best Friend asked, \”How the hell do you miss a reciever with a friggin LIGHTHOUSE on his head?\”
That game is not on here in Southern Oregon (ridiculous!). Instead we get to watch the pathetic Beavers get their asses handed to them by Penn State. While I love watching the Beavers lose, I\’d much rather watch the Ducks win.

What about the rest of the uni combo for the Ducks? Which of the 4 jerseys and 4 pants are they rockin\’?
Black with Green Shoulders and Black Pants. Makes me so worried what my Cougars are gonna look like when we go Nike next year.
anything will look better than today….
Yeah, the yellow helmets really need to go…
