Wear Fake Stirrups, Get Torched*

Let this be a lesson, Todd Wellemeyer. Also, best not to groove pitches to Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Pat Burrell … in consecutive at-bats. —Bryan

Then the O’s go and wear link and come back from a 6-1 deficit against the Pirates who chose not to cooperate by wearing their current unis instead of the one’s from 1979.

Were the O’s uniforms button-down or pull-over in 1979? The Bucs should have their black uniforms with yellow pants complete with pill-box hat! The O’s should have worn the Orange tops!!!!

The Os’ tops were in fact button down in 79. The orange alts were pull over though. I thought they looked great last night and especially loved that they went with historically acurate helmets except for the Coolflows.

Alot of people at Camden Yard was talking about how great the O’s looked last night. Bring back the cartoon bird.

Whilst on the subject of THEY REFUSE TO GET IT(TM), The A’s didn’t wear throwbacks against the Giants last naight as well.

You’d think that interleague play would be the perfect opportunity to wear the throwbacks. You had a couple 70’s World Series match-ups last night, but the O’s were the only ones to go throwback. (Except for the Jays, who do it every Friday at home)

Anyone know how TBTC nights work? I thought I’d heard that the home team foots the bill for both sets of uniforms…which would explain why so many times only the home team changes unis.

Someone mentioned it would have been cool if the Cubs P.A. announcer used a megaphone the other day. I know on the very first TBTC when the White Sox did it at old Comiskey, the P.A. guy WAS down on the field with a magaphone. I also remember that the players really liked the unis and many said they’d just as soon wear them every day. I think a lot of guys have never experienced how comfortable baggier pants do feel. And, in the case of those White Sox unis there were no stirrups, just white kneehighs…so lord knows they were convenient.

I look at it this way, if ankle length pants really did work better, football uniforms wouldn’t stop at the knee and Cooperalls would have caught on for hockey.

We’ve got to come up with a uniwatch term for this …

I love that the Orioles went all-out with the batting helmets as well. Usually you see the club keep their usual batting helmets for throwback nights.

If link were Wellemeyer’s downfall last night, it sure took a long time for the “jinx” to affect him… in his previous seven starts, “The Colonel” was 5-0 with a 1.88 ERA, holding the opposition to a .256 batting average, striking out 26 while walking 13. The only St. Louis pitcher who didn’t get “lit up” last night was infielder link, who pitched a perfect ninth.

Most of the Cardinals wear today’s horrid “pajama pants” style of uniform… Then there’s infielder link, who rocks the old-school stirrups.

Am I seeing things correctly? Were the Giants TBTC caps really without the MLB patch on the back? Talk about doing it up right.

The O’s helmets were their usual helmets, but they put a white sticker with logo across the front and an orange over the bill to give it the ’79 look. The white was way too short and gave a visor appearance, probably because they couldn’t put the sticker over the cool-flo vents.

As for the Pirates, the O’s said it was a celebration of the ’79 season and AL Championship, not the World Series, so they did not have the Pirates participate.

But if it’s the home team that has to pick up the tab, then the visitors may not even have been asked to play along.

Now, if they WERE invited and refused to wear uniforms someone else would pay for, then yeah, they’re being stuffy.
As for the Pirates, the O’s said it was a celebration of the ‘79 season and AL Championship, not the World Series, so they did not have the Pirates participate.
the bucs beat those o’s, 4-3, in 1979…so i can see not asking them to participate

however, it’s fuckin LAME, since they WERE the two participants IN that 1979 WS…if you’re celebrating you AL championship team…and you have 159 other games to do it…why would you choose to do so against the team you actually played (and lost to) in the big dance?

and whom amongst us wouldn’t have LOVED to see link last night?

They also went with elastic waistbands.

According to an article on the Pirates homepage. The equipment manager said that they were not asked to participate and they only found out when the read about it.

When it comes to throwback uniform games, the Home Team is responsible for buying both their uniforms and the visiting team’s jerseys. So it is not the fault of the Oakland A’s or the Pittsbrgh Pirates for wearing their regular uniformslast night but the decision of the home team to not provide throwbacks for the visitors.

I wish the SFGs would keep those as an alt. And when I say alt, I MEAN an alt; IE; maybe once a month, you know? Not like the frickin Astros who wear ’em every night. Or maybe just keep em for Friday night home games or something.

How many MLB teams have no alt? Giants…Yankees..?

The Brewers did not in the first throwback game ever.

I didn’t realize it was a requirement. Nice touch? Yeah. But why should I be required to change my clothes just because you change yours? Even if you offer to pay for it?

Why do I have to do that? To satisfy you?

Which I happen to think is a very good way to do it. And unlike most teams who come to mind (i.e. Red Sox), they actually wear them during Sunday night games, because they wear the hats every Sunday home game. Oh, and also, I think the Astos DO have a system, they just have so many variations that it doesn’t seem like it. I know they wear the pinstripes as their “normal” uniform, but then they usually go with the clean whites for day (weekday) games and then the red alts for Sunday games. I think.

Too bad its a Saturday thread… lots of beautiful throwbacks Friday. Giants unis are one of my favorites of all time… yes, they should ditch their goofy black alts and go all orange.

    Ref the O’s:
I love the cartoon bird, and rock a white panel cap on a daily basis. With the change to the road unis upcoming, I hope the PTB embrace the past and add a cartoon bird cap to the current uni somehow. I was excited when we went orithilogically correct back in 89, but the constant updates have become boring. Loved the orange stirrups, but next time invite F. Robinson or Palmer down to ensure they aren’t backwards.

on the flip side..the Astros don’t let their minor league clubs wear their socks high, I’m not exactly sure why. This is why Hunter Pence wears his high every game.

Also, the Astros wear the pinstripes for home games, all whites for saturdays and day games, and red with “Astros” on sundays. As for the almost non existant away jerseys, Drayton hates them so thats why they dont wear them, opting to go with the “Houston” red alts on the road. That makes 5 jerseys with only 4 being used normally.

I guess that makes some sort of sense. Although I wish they’d just stick with the stripes, I think they look a lot better (although I sort of like the red hats). I also think it’s kind of cool that they’re at least consistent with the reds, and have separate ones for home and away. Now that I think about it, neither the black nor the red that they use works well with gray.
