On Beavers, And Their Place In Uni History

beaver

By Bryan Redemske

FYI: Paul’s got a non-uni piece up Page 2 today.

Meanwhile: Back in the good ol’ days — say, 1603 or so — the beaver played a key role in the rapidly expanding fur trade of North America. Without this humble, wood-nibbling creature, there’s no way the white man would have taken over the continent. A beaver pelt was good for all sorts of stuff … like trading for whiskey and tobacco. Actually, one pelt was good for one pound of tobacco or four pounds of lead shot. A dozen pelts hooked you up with a rifle. And 15 beavers meant you were a 17th-century pimp.

At Oregon State, five pelts means you play baseball. The two-time defending national champion Beavers have five different jerseys, effectively ending late-night laundry duties on road trips. You likely remember the old-timey contrasting-color placket that debuted in February, but here’s a quick look at the rest of the rotation. Thanks are owed to Hank Hager, the Oregon State baseball SID, for putting up with me for the last two months. I wanted to dig a little deeper, but the coaches are busy trying to win another championship or something. Their priorities are clearly out of whack.

First and foremost is the elimination of this logo. That’s a very good thing.

Here’s what the Beavers wore as their standard home uniform for the past few years. Despite a university-wide logo rebranding (aiming more toward this), the cream is still around. And though Oregon State is a Nike school, the baseball team wears Wilson uniforms and uses DeMarini bats, which are made by Wilson.

The new white uniform is pretty cool. A similar black jersey — worn with sweet striped stirrups — is also in the mix. The numbers on both, however, are morbidly obese.

The gray pinstripes, which looked like this last year (crap is also a good way to describe it), now look like this. Much better.

And, finally, there’s an orange jersey. At least they don’t have an orange hat to go with it. Or a white one with sublimated flames or something. Schools don’t do that, do they?

Now over to Vince, for more beaver jokes … and the ticker.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Chris Souder thinks he has found the perfect shoes for Paul. … Elena Elms passes on these photos from the Virtual Museum of University History at UNC. … Not sure this has been linked to not or yet, but someone went through a pretty detailed comparison of the old and new Portland Beaver uniforms. Even if it’s old news, I had to get one beaver mention in, right? (Thanks to Nick Oelke). … New football uniforms coming for the University of Kentucky (Thanks Shannon Knight). … That’s it for the ticker today. 15,347 emails on the ESPN smoking column, but only a handful of helpful ticker notes.

Good news in the uni world as these hellish looking things got eliminated and won’t be seen again until next season. I blame all the injuries COL had on the Bettman Stripes. They’re gulity.

Me and my roomate want to get the jerseys from the 1st mighty ducks movie (the green/yellow and unfortunately splash of purple ones that were never used by the nhl team). Anyone have an idea as to where i could find replicas online?

    Good God why…..

MIT (the “Engineers”) features a stylized edgy-looking beaver as its athletic mascot. To be sure, MIT athletes might not compete favorably with, say, OSU on the various athletic fields. After graduation, however, things, how shall I say, “change” in a direction favorable to the MIT folks. Regardless, MIT deserves some props for doing the beaver right.

Just wanted to second LI Phil. Great job providing us with our collective fixes while Paul was away.

and, whom amongst us doesn’t prefer a stylized, edgy-looking beaver to a hairy, unkempt one?

I’ve been dying for both one of those and one of the Hawks jerseys from that movie. I saw a kid with a Gordon Bombay Hawks jersey at a BC basketball game and went nuts looking online to no avail.

Let us know if you find one!

Even though they think adding black is an appropriate “tweak”, I’m glad to see Kentucky won’t be simply copying Buffalo’s uniforms again next season.

It doesn’t get any lower than that.

    Paul’s back – Yeah!

Oops, not quite yet. Sorry- I’m a premature eja -er- commenter.

    From the UK jersey story:
The big stripe down the side of the jersey and pants has been replaced with a smaller, more traditional set of diagonal stripes around the rib cage area.

I didn’t know diagonal stripes are “traditional.”

The new uniforms will also feature more black trim, particularly around the sleeve and collar areas.

That’s what UK needs, more black. (sigh).

    Great review of Oregon State.

We’ve talked about it before, but the Portland Beavers (AAA, Pacific Coast League) also have a great link this year.

I’m not exactly part of the Uni Watch community, but I’m an avid reader. Read it every morning. Gotta say though, I’m pretty disappointed with the blog the past week. The ticker’s been pretty light.

The Oregon State White and black unis with the dark stripe along the buttons are hideous. The grey pinstripes suck too, and the orange hurt my eyes. The cream are nice anyway.

It’s been mentioned every day, but you may have missed it – regular writer Paul Lukas is away, and Bryan is filling in (with help from Vince). We’re all very appreciative that there is a daily post at all, rather than shutting down the site for the week. For someone who claims to value the site, your criticism is extremely misplaced.

Here we go again! Do you ever think maybe to ask Wade if the ticker is ALL he reads? Maybe he skims and doesn’t have the time to dive into the posts/comments with as much detail as some of us do.

Yet again a critical remark, not personal in nature, is jumped on. Way to make a guy feel welcome.

I hope you aren’t discouraged from posting in the future Wade. It’s a shame the “Get It” mentality of this blog at times forms cliques.

link were outstanding. The new ones are not nearly as good.

As for link, I am willing to look past the cap brim and jersey buttoning issues, because the pants are just about perfect (a little baggy, hiked just below the knee) and those stirrups are beautiful.

ESPNU will have a uniform-themed block of programming on Monday. In honor of Cinco de Mayo, they will show a bunch of games where the featured player wears number 5.

9 a.m.- Edgerrin James: Miami vs. UCLA (1998)
11 a.m.- Donovan McNabb: Syracuse vs. Virginia Tech (1998)
1 p.m.- LaDainian Tomlinson: TCU vs. East Carolina (1999 Mobile Bowl)
3:30 p.m.- Reggie Bush: USC vs. UCLA (2005)
6:30 p.m.- Darren McFadden: Arkansas vs. South Carolina (2005)
9 p.m.- Christ Lofton: Florida vs. Tennessee (2008)

And then they’ll go with the cheesy ending – O.J. Mayo on Cinco de Mayo.

    10:30 p.m.- O.J. Mayo: USC vs. Arizona (2008)

Site is being sluggish today. Our hosting provider will be moving our database to a new location tonight sometime between 10pm-midnight. This will fix the load problems you might be experiencing.

I was always taught that baseball pants were to be put on inside out and upside down. Meaning the elastic at the bottom does not show. It seems that now even players who wear high pants do not wear them correctly as most of the pictures showing stirrups today have visible elastic cuffs.

I actually liked the horns for some reason.

The interlocking UB has been used for quite some time but it was upgraded (my term) in the mid 90s. It’s a school-wide mark, as opposed to the Bull and Buffalo word mark that are exclusive to athletics (and also add black to the equation). Those graphics have yet to make it on the uniforms.

How funny would it be if their uniforms were “updated” this year or next to match UK’s?

While I’m personally not a huge fan of the modern “OSU” logo, I wouldn’t have nearly as much a problem with it if it wasn’t combined with a “classic” looking jersey. You either go classic, or you go modern. If you tried to mix the two in professional sports, you’d have an link on your hands.

Michigan and Oregon State have nothing on Florida State.
