Carlos Guillen To Climber: Where’d You Get That Suit?

marmot

By Bryan Redemske

Regular weekend readers know how much I like to pick on Carlos Guillen. It’s not that the huge dip and baggy pants aren’t ridiculous in their own right — they are — it’s that they pale in comparison to the rest of his getup.

You see, friends, Carlos Guillen is a collector. In one of my previous lives as a high school baseball coach, I had a couple of collectors. Anything that made them feel even a tiny bit bad-ass was added to the wardrobe. It starts with wristbands, progresses to necklaces and elbow pads, then half-sleeves, and peaks with this. I wonder how much faster out of the box he’d be without all that crap? There’s a fine line between things you NEED to play baseball — shoes, a cap, a bat, and a glove. Everything else is extra.

We at Uni Watch can help Carlos break the cycle of dependancy. Let’s start with the legs. This picture was posted by Mark Mihalik in yesterday’s comments. One look at those guards tells me he needs to stay back on the ball. Guys who get pull-happy and lunge tend to foul pitches off their front legs, like this. Stay back, Carlos!

Up to the arms, where the heavy lifting is done. Taped wrists — especially with the stretchy tape Carlos uses — are dumb. By the end of the game, those things are nothing but sweaty wristbands that have to be cut to be removed. Just wear wristbands, dude. Or get stronger wrists or something. And then there’s the titanium-woven elbow sleeves. Not believing in quackery is the only way around those.

In positive news, Carlos seems to have cut down on the necklaces. I see only two here. Perhaps he found a solid all-purpose totem for game use? Let’s hope, anyway.

(The climber in the picture, by the way, is Sean Swarner, a cancer survivor who threw out the first pitch at the Indians/Yankees game last night. Swarner was esentially given a death sentence by being diagnosed with a pair of nasty cancers within a few years of each other. He beat them both — one of them severely decreased his lung function — and became the only cancer survivor to climb the highest mountains on all seven continents. I have no idea, however, why he wore his high-altitude suit to throw out the first pitch.)

Mark your calendars: If you’re anywhere near Barberton, Ohio, on Saturday, you’re going to want to check out this guy. He’s the grand marshall of the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, and this year’s theme is Purple Pride. More info here, thanks to Vince … who will feel Paul’s wrath upon completion of the boss’ vacation.

Uni Watch News Ticker: I know we’ve seen baseball players with quarterback-style wristbands before, but isn’t that usually in cases with a pitcher who speaks a different language? Anyway, here’s a player from the University of Illinois at Chicago with such an accessory, and I can’t figure out why. Anyone? (Thanks to Will Streit). … The Padres wore their usual home whites on Sunday, not the camouflage get-ups that they plan on using for the rest of the season on Sundays, because they haven’t received the camo duds in the Cool Base fabric yet (thanks to Brian Hilemon). … Maybe Jeremy Accardo should share this glove with David Eckstein? Details on Zack Hample, a noted ball snagger who brought the glove to the Rays vs. Blue Jays game in Florida the other day, are on his blog (thanks to Chris Flinn). … Texas A&M doing their part to promote prostate cancer awareness. Photos here. (Thanks to Chris Smith). … The Cavs wore their wine-colored jerseys for the first time in the playoffs on the road Sunday. They usually wear the blue alts. … Mark Jones notes that whenever Southern University and Grambling get together on the diamond, the teams wear Negro League uniforms. Added bonus: each player wears a jersey from a different team. … Loyal reader Paul Lukas found another gem on Steve Dewing’s site: “The stirrups are great, natch, but the real attraction is the San Diego 200th-anniversary patch, which the team wore in 1969.” … I recently judged the Akron Independent Film Festival, and this was one of the bizarre short films that was included. Needless to say, I thought of it in a round-about way when I saw this photo.

All it’ll take is one good inside fastball and Guillen will ‘collect’ one of link robo-elbow thingies.

Does Texas A&M always wear those stirrups? P.S. Gotta love those Texas Tech and LSU throwbacks, too.

my high school team played a team from scotts valley, CA in vegas and the whole team had those quarterback wristbands on. so i asked some of the players why while they were hitting and the infielders had situations for hitting, and the cather added the pitches as well. the coach would just yell out a color and a number, and voila!

Who is doing the ticker compiling?! I submitted that tidbit about the cavs wine on the road yesterday, and didn’t get any mention!

Vince, how about some love to a fellow North East Ohioan!!!

    Dave Sterling, Akron

I’m not from Akron, but my dad went to Buchtel High – Class of ’51.

Forget the link – will someone please wake up the guy sitting on the right side of the picture?

And why is he wearing a white hat while the other guys in the dugout are in blue hats?

Regarding that stars jersey that i mentioned about getting yesterday, i went with modano. I cant wait to get this in the mail, first ever hockey jersey i have bought.

Good choice. You\’ll be able to wear that LONG after he retires. Best American to ever lace up skates…..

My guess for the quarterback style wristbands are for hitter’s tendencies while the player is playing defense. Ryan Braun, new to left-field, has a cheat sheet that he keeps in his back pocket that he’ll pull out before every hitter. It just seems easier to have it on your wrist.

I agree with post #12- the wrist bands outline the game plan for the hitters. For batter #1 you pitch this way, #2 can’t hit a changeup, etc etc, Also the put on there the defensive postioning, Shade towards left for the cleanup hitter because all he does is pull the ball. All stuff like that so the manager doesn’t need to be yelling stuff all the time and the players have the information at their disposal

Regarding post #10- I would think that’s the Athletic Trainer, He’s got on khaki’s rather then the grey baseball pants. Thus the different color hat. Maybe he just chose to wear that one that day.

    “Loyal reader Paul Lukas” …

I’ll be laughing all day long!
I have no idea, however, why he wore his high-altitude suit to throw out the first pitch.
he wears the suit because it’s his ‘calling card’ if you will…anyone can throw out a first pitch, but someone wearing a suit will garner instant recognition…and you’ll remember it long after you’ve left the ballpark…he founded link which basically is for that rather small group of cancer survivors who climb mountains

he raises awareness & cash for the disease

I’m not familiar with this person. Should I be?

And as for the QB cheat sheet armbands in baseball, and I ask this never making it past 6-7 year old tee-ball myself, but isn’t that a little bit much? From a purely spectator point of view it seems to me that baseball is one sport where for all of the “precentages” and “tendencies” and whatnot that managers preach and try to rely on, what actually happens on the field usually is the farthest from what was planned.

Did anyone else have the uh… fortune… to see Jason Taylor on Dancing with the Stars last night? It’s my wife’s fave show. The Dolphins uni-inspired outfits immediately made me think of Uniwatch. I dug the stripes.

Here’s a link to video. Not as clear as the HD we were watching on last night…

Dave: I’m compiling the ticker in Paul’s absence. You were the first to point out the Cavs jersey item, but not the only one. Thus, no mention. Sorry.

Rob: I grew up in Hinckley, now live in Brunswick, and have tallied addresses in most Clevo suburbs, but none in Akron. I do read the Beacon Journal online quite often for Windhorst’s Cavs stuff, as it is perpetually and infinitely better than the PD’s coverage.

Unless Jason gets his trade, that’s the last time he’s going to hear that song.

As the equipment manager at UAB, we have our catchers wear them for pitches being called from the dugout. They are colored coded for each inning to mix it up and limit the opportunity for the pitches to be picked up.

“There’s a fine line between things you NEED to play baseball – shoes, a cap, a bat, and a glove.”

it must be a pretty fine line if it weaves between all those things.

but seriously, since you’re so intent on being minimalistic, all you really NEED are a bat and glove. and if you’re an AL pitcher, you don’t even need the bat. then again, i’ve seen those dominican kids with milk cartons on their hands, so the glove must be not needed either.

obviously, anyone can nitpick; about grammar, about accessories. but the reasonable point here is that these limiting lines, such as we imagine them, are arbitrarily defined according to what we mean by “need.” perhaps mr. guillen feels a need to back all his millions by ensuring he stays as comfortable in the batter’s box as his salary allows, with whatever superstitions or preventive padding may be, if comfort in the batter’s box helps him stay productive.

a fair comparison might be made to a volunteer blog contributor: does he really NEED to raise the same points again and again, or does he merely ornament the page with more redundancy out of a necessity to justify the margins given him?

My Texas Aggies sport the excellent stirrups and are on the longest conference winning streak in Big XII history? Coincidence? I think not.

    …about capitalization.

I believe this topic was raised once before and with the additions, it seems Bryan felt it appropriate to update it. Save the “fair comparisons” for somewhere they take unnecessary shots that contribute.

I could use the group’s help on finding some uniform information – military uniform. Specifically, I’m looking for a guide to the proper placement of decorations and insignia on US Army dress blues. I haven’t been able to find anything with the Google.

If you have a link suggestion, would you kindly forward it to gamma1099 at juno dot com? Greatly appreciated.

Most of the Brewers outfielders do this. Corey Hart checks his after every hitter. He once was accused of checking his cell phone when he was looking at his cheat sheet! Bill Hall did it in the outfield last year. I haven’t noticed if Gabe Kapler does, and we’ll be able to tell on Mike Cameron starting today!!!

Ah, that’s because those posts are compiled between working at a full-time job (second shift), caring for my son at home every day, attempting to be a passable bike racer, and keeping the house in order along the way. And I’m working for free, as is Vince. Because of all of that, I get about 5 hours of sleep per night.

Feel free to let me know where I could carve in a few hours to compose a piece more to your liking. Because if it’s that big of a problem, I could just turn off the comments and shut the site down for the week — per Paul’s original plan.

Let me know, and I’ll bend to your wishes.

Well … this seems like a perfect opportunity to thank Bryan and Vince for their efforts this week. I have, for better or worse, become quite addicted to UniWatch and would not want to see it shut down for a week. Heck, a day is tough. I enjoy all of the uni discussions whether they are at a very detailed level or a high level. I enjoy the occasional tangental discussions.

    So

    Thanks Vince

listen i’m not trying to complain about your life style. i never wanted to come to that, and i deliberately acknowledged in the beginning your volunteer role. i hope most readers here can observe what i contended is a polite comparison between one blogger’s view of needed critique and one baseball player’s view of needed armor

Maybe I’m a rarity around here, but I am a sports fan (and weekend warrior) who likes both the classic things like baseball pants worn at the knee and black-on-black cleats while also rooting for the OU Ducks and wearing a mirrored visor in my adult hockey league. so what? we discuss the entire range of styles here. just because Paul hates purple in unis does not mean that is a requirement for Getting It. I love the Carlos G. stuff. I have always been called Mr. Accessory by my coaches and teammates. That doesn’t mean I also don’t love my Yankees going NNOB forever. to me, the guy complaining about the constant references critical of Carlos G. is just pointing out that Bryan is beating a dead horse. we get it – Carlos wears a lot of stuff. but, being a minimalist isn’t always cool either. well, unless Bryan will shake hands with (as I call him) ‘Pee Hands’ Posada.

allow me to pile on with the thanks to Vince and Bryan. I look forward to UniWatch every day (beats having to do REAL work at work – and it’s one of the few ‘blog’ sites that my work firewall doesn’t block) and the sometimes spirited repartee that goes on. A little decorum goes a long ways, ladies and gents.

When my kids were younger, their soccer coach had the bright idea (really…no sarcasm) of putting rubber bands on one wrist or the other to remind them which side of the field they were supposed to generally stay on. Right wrist = right side of the field. By age 8 or so, he graduated them to colored rubber bands for positions. Red rubber band, right side = midfielder, right side, and so on.

Well, I thought his ban was of the cornball joke of putting a link in the comments section of a scantily clad babe and saying something like “can you find the uniform”? I thought it was a ban on the corny joke and the idea running it’s course (like we’re not supposed to say that phrases about getting sick in one’s… well, I don’t wanna say it at the risk of getting banned!) I would think one could argue that saying G-DD-MN is much more offensive than talking about a good looking girl…or guy (can’t forget the female uni-watchers out there). When someone mentioned this back in the post when Paul had the photos of his stirrups that post disappeared and a response disappeared and the topic was silenced.

Besides I think most of the off-topic stuff on here isn’t out of whack. And I’d also argue that sometimes even uni-related stuff is squashed. I know everyone’s tired of the Sean Taylor stuff (and I’m not bringing it up to debate again) but there was some good, honest, intelligent debate on both sides of the coin of that topic. Yet after awhile people were like “no more”. Same thing with logo creep.

I say, if you want to debate, do all you want. If you don’t want to participate in a certain topic, don’t. No one is holding a gun to your head. People can feel free to talk about something else, just write a new comment. I hate to see “let’s move on” or “no more” when they’re uni-related topics. Now, politics, “Yankees Suck!”, etc. Sure. After a few posts, they should get squashed like a bug.

That’s cool Bryan. Not sure what nidinakes meant in post, but I wouldn’t call at all what you wrote today as a lazy effort (in fact, I think it’s quite good). However, there could be valid criticism as far as unoriginal topic. (You wouldn’t be the only offender in that category although quite honestly, I don’t see that as a problem because I’m amazed at the variety of stuff on here. With new posts every weekday, it truly is outstanding work Paul and company do).

To me, lazy would be just writing the same thing, almost verbatim and that clearly isn’t what you did. However, if it was repackaged without any new analysis, than critical remarks could be valid.

One of the biggest complaints I hear about Paul outside of UW is that he’s quick to rip a new uni design when a team makes a change without offering an alternative. Now he would say that sometimes status quo is OK and a change isn’t necessary. While that might be the case sometimes, it would be cool to have a little more “what I would have liked to have seen is this….” and have it be an original idea, not just saying “the Chargers should be back to the old throwbacks” because you’re not bringing anything new to the plate.

For example, to practice what a preach, I love the Tennessee Titans color scheme but I wish they would go with a more traditional number font and helmet stripe. Since they’ve pretty much had the same uni since their inception that would be original. Heck, our posters that are more artistically inclined…I LOVE when they do mock-ups with original ideas. That’s the coolest.

To the people saying “say something nice or don’t say something at all”, that’s completely the wrong idea for an online community like this. I’m saying be mean or hurtful or to get personal, but we’re bound to have disagreements. With Paul. With Bryan. With each other as posters. That’s all a good thing people.

There’s a difference between honest disagreements and personal attacks.

Rip on teams, equipment suppliers, logos, colors, leagues, famous people, politicians, articles of clothing and stadiums, but don’t say anything about your fellow posters that isn’t nice. Shouldn’t be that hard.

I go to Miami University and recent went to their baseball game against Purdue and noticed Purdue’s catcher Dan Black was wearing one of the QB wristbands. He would get the signs from a coach in the dugout and then look to the wristband to translate. Now being a former catcher I know there’s a lot of different signs to learn, but what happened to good old fashioned memorization?

I thought the “don’t make the same joke about the hot girl” rule wasn’t because it’s inappropriate or sexist or worse than swearing.

It’s because it’s tired. It’s cliche. It requires no effort.

    Be better than that.

Advancement of the game, overcomplication, out-thinking and micromanaging.

Back when I was catching, if I had a pitcher with more than two pitches that was a luxury. Plus, I called all my pitches, including pitch-outs. It was up to the pitcher to decide whether to attempt a pick-off throw or to step off. If they weren’t doing their job in that regard they’d get a stern “give him a look” or “keep him close” or after the fact if they stole the base “give Dougie a chance” from our manager.

Now, managers have to be in control of EVERYTHING, down to signaling throws to first and even step off.

Same with defensive signals. We had a few call-outs but aside from a wheel play on a bunt or a first and third, what to do if the runner at first steals we had pretty basic formations in the field.

Football is the same way, long gone are the days of the QB huddling his team up and calling the plays. Payton is the closest to that and he’s new school in that those are line-of-scrimmage hot reads for the most part.

To me, it’s a sad reality because things are more fun when it’s simple.

I just realized something about the new park … can’t say how glad I am that … let’s just say “some company” … hasn’t paid to put their logo on THOSE outfield walls!

Keep up the good work, Vince!
as far as i can see…everyone who has complimented bryan has also complimented vince

and who might the “other writers” who “whine(d) less” be?

don’t try to start shit about bryan…you’re not funny on the weekend and you’re not funny during the weekday either
Asics makes the best looking baseball spikes!! Just the right amount of striping withour being too thick (Reeboks strpies have gotten really wide lately, kind of defeats the hpurpose of black spikes whith that much white.)

Oh good lord!! I think the checked pants pattern is seared into my retinas!

As for Mini Fenway as stated earlier…

    link

I’s like to see many teams adopt a mini version of their home parks for the kids and youth baseball.

I am just wondering if there is anything to the Phoenix Suns wearing their Orange uniforms on the road for the first two games of the playoff series, only to loose both.
During the season, Phoenix wore Purple roadies for the 2 away games and won both.
When I e-mailed the Suns front office about what I had come up with and highly suggested wearing their Purple uniforms tonight, I was returned a e-mail basically saying…it was none of my business and the color of the uniform does will not dictate the out come.
I beg to differ. I will go out on a limb to say that if Phoenix wears Orange tonight, their playoff run will end tonight.
Paul or anyone out there, is there such a place that would keep records as record of the teams different color uniforms?

I always thought these link looked solid.

    That’s just bizarre.

The Suns’ run might very well end in game five. But it’s not going to be because of the color they wear.

Quite possibly the best post that I have ever read on UniWatch!

Well, maybe a close second to Phil’s Ricky Williams, Herbivore comment!

At one time- maybe its still there; they had re-created Crosley Field in the Cincy suburb of Blue Ash.

OK, so the Indians in their home uniforms (not the throwback inspired unis) have nameplates. The nameplate is white. However, inside the letters, it’s link. On a white nameplate. I can’t imagine this is cheaper or more effective. I don’t particularly think it’s ugly, but it is happening. I have no idea why. I also can’t think of another instance where this happens.

Ok, enough is enough. I like some of these outrageous looking uniforms that have come out in recent years (ie. The “U”, Oregon, Minnesota). But what the hell is up with Cincinnati’s new uniforms. I hope they get laughed off the damn field

And there’s your textbook case for not triple-layering tackle-twill letters and numbers.

I am from Old Brooklyn ( Cleveland) Ohio.

Oscar de la Hoya will be wearing Houston Dynamo’s “forever orange” color on his trunks and robe when he fights at the Home Depot Center on Saturday night.

    link

I don’t have a screen grab but Black (Blue)Jays jackass manager John Gibbons actually did something reaconable last night versus the bosox. He chose to wear the regular ball cap instead of that stupid T hat that the rest of the team wore.

Both the catchers on our college baseball team wear the wristband, so I assume it’s for them to remember the signs and all the defensive shifts and such?

The answer for the wrist band question is that in college baseball the pitching coaches often call the pitches, and as a result sign picking is very common. To counter this practice, a system where the catcher will have a grid with different pitches in the boxes on his arm.(Think Battleship). For instance, the pitching coach will flash the number 1, 2, then 5, and the catcher will then look at column 12, row 5, and see curveball. The cards can be changed every inning and there are no repeats, so it is unpickable. I have heard of some teams giving a wrist band to the whole team and running all of their signs off of them, but this is less common.
