Monday Morning Uni Watch

Big uni-related story in the NFL yesterday was the range of Sean Taylor memorials. Here’s a quick rundown:

• The Redskins wore a “21” jersey patch. The Redskins’ coaching staff and owner wore it, too.

• In addition, Clinton Portis wore a Taylor tribute T-shirt under his jersey (here’s another view).

• John Eubanks wore a Taylor do-rag. At first I thought this was one of the towels that fans were given, but now I think it was actually the sleeve from a Taylor jersey.

• All teams wore a “21” helmet decal. This led to some pretty crowded rear-helmet groupings, especially for the Broncos (who already had their dual memorial for Darrent Williams and Damien Nash) and Browns (who added that “BW” decal this week in memory of Hall of Famer Bill Willis — not to be confused with the “BW” decal for Bill Walsh that the 49ers have been wearing all year).

• I was hoping we’d see some facemask stripes, like Taylor sometimes wore. Didn’t happen, but Antonio Pierce of the Giants did something similar: He taped Taylor’s uniform number onto his mask. This was the only personalized tribute to Taylor that I spotted. (Special thanks to Ryan Perkins for the screen grab.)

Meanwhile, in non-Taylor developments:

• Tommie Harris had “Psalms 91” (which also happens to be his uniform number) written on his Breathe Right strip.
• The Jets took the unusual step of wearing their Titans throwbacks on the road in Miami.

• Joseph Addai was showing some serious skin in the 2nd quarter.

• No photo yet, but I saw for myself that Dallas Clark’s American flag decal was still missing — a particularly egregious omission when you consider that the equipment staff had to add the Sean Taylor decal to his helmet, so you’d think they would’ve noticed the missing flag. Bryan, whose wife went to high school with Clark, is still working on getting the full story on this one.

• Also no photo, but several readers reported that Braylon Edwards was wearing white shoes and going bare-calved, NCAA-style, early in the Browns/Cards game. Then he added brown socks but still had white shoes. He eventually switched to black shoes like the rest of the Browns.

Uni Watch Calendar Update: Several meet/greet opportunities coming up over the next week. Here’s the deal:

December 6th: Marc Spears of the Boston Globe and I will be fielding questions from students in a media seminar class this Thursday at Boston University. I’ll be convening a Uni Watch party at 8:30 that evening at Boston Beer Works, which is right across from Fenway Park. Meanwhile, if anyone wants to attend the seminar class, which begins at 6:30, the professor has graciously agreed to accommodate a few extra people. If you’re interested, get in touch and I’ll let you know where to go.

December 10th: The completely wonderful City Reliquary, of which I am a proud card-carrying member, will be holding its annual benefit gala at the Automotive High School Auditorium, and I’m one of the two featured speakers this year. I’ll be doing a Power Point presentation about Brooklyn Dodgers uniform history, but the real attraction is the other speaker: Lawrence Weschler, author of Mr. Wilson’s Cabinet of Wonder and Boggs. The evening will also feature a short documentary film, a live samba band, and — if you shell out a lot of extra $$$ — dinner at Bamonte’s, one of Brooklyn’s oldest and most storied red-sauce Italian restaurants. Full details here.

Sometime in January: I’m going to be one of four presenters at the inaugural edition of a new speaking series called “Adult Education,” which is being curated by my longtime pal Carrie McLaren (editrix of the excellent consumer-culture magazine Stay Free), who describes the series as “sort of grownup show-and-tell,” complete with visual aids. The theme of this first installment will be “Micro-Genres”: Carrie, who’s mildly obsessed with chimps, will be talking about people who’ve tried to raise chimps as part of the family; longtime Uni Watch pal Liz Clayton will talk about painfully obvious fast-food restaurant conversions (she has an entire site devoted to this phenomenon); Jim Hanas will talk about “meta tourism” (i.e., photos of tourists taking photos); and I’ll be talking about the strange world of trade magazines (Elevator World, Hay and Forage Grower, American Funeral Director, Demolition, and so on, each of which is as obsessively subject-specific as Uni Watch is). The exact date is still TBA, but it’s definitely going to be on a Tuesday in January, and the venue will be Union Hall, which is conveniently located around the corner from Uni Watch HQ. Further details on this one as they become available.

Membership News: I’m happy to announce that we’ve now gone over 500 enrollees. But I can’t announce who the 500th member is because that was a gift membership and the gift-giver has asked that I keep the order secret until Christmas.

Speaking of which, remember, this Wednesday is the deadline for ordering a discounted gift membership for the holidays.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Lots of pics here from the upcoming hoops movie Semi-Pro (with thanks to Mike Nachreiner). ”¦ Bizarre uniform sighting here (courtesy of Eric Trager). ”¦ Looking for new and creative ways to lace up your cleats or sneakers? Look here (with thanks to Mike Blinn). ”¦ Roman numeral alert: Charlie Coley III of Charlotte (with thanks to intern emeritus Vince Grzegorek). ”¦ “Once upon a time, Marquette had a football team,” writes proud Badger State booster Nicole Haase. “Here‘s a pretty cool collection of 1940s program covers.” ”¦ “Check out the difference in the helmet stripe thickness for the two players in green, who play for Mentor Lake Catholic High in Ohio,” writes Tim Snyder. “I figure it’s some kind of merit award, but they also use more conventional merit decals.” Anyone know more about this? ”¦ Paul Bridge reports that Utah Valley University, which will have D-1A status by 2009, has some new logos. Details here. ”¦ Very odd NOB typography being for Jonathan Zebina of Juventus (and, presumably for the rest of their players): The “Z” and the “E” look like a “2” and a backwards “3.” It’s apparently so fraught with confusion that the “E” ended up being applied backwards for Saturday’s game against AC Milan (all this courtesy of Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Mizzou’s Stryker Sulak had some sleeve patch problems on Saturday (with thanks to James Wortham for the screen grab). ”¦ Nice little recap of Lakers uniform history here (as forwarded by Matthew Wolfram). ”¦ Ryan Perkins notes that R.W. McQuarters of the Giants had some helmet decal issues yesterday. ”¦ Several readers noted that Wabash wore some ill-advised pants in Saturday’s D-III quarterfinal game. ”¦ Georgia will wear black in the Sugar Bowl. ”¦ Speaking of black, Texas A&M’s hoops team wore their black alts yesterday. … “The Barbarians, an invitation-only rugby club that plays a handful of matches per year, took on the newly-crowned world champions South Africa,” writes Eric Bangeman. In addition to wearing classic black-and-white uniforms, the Barbarians ask each player to wear the socks from his home club, which makes for some interesting hosiery contrasts.”

I love the website dedicated to painfully obvious fast-food restaurant conversions. It is cool to see a site dedicated to something that we see and chuckle about all the time.

My favorite non-restaurant version of this phenomenon occurred in Dallas. A Hilton was purchased by someone and the name changed to Hiltop. Not Hilltop, but Hiltop. They kept all the same signs to save money, awkwardly configuring the “n” into a “p.”

Sadly, it disappeared a couple of years ago, so I doubt that I could nab a photo.

i would have a picture of edwards in the black shoes later in the game, but my DVR didnt record the game as i asked it to!

Clinton Portis had a hole right in between his numbers on his back yesterday. Can anyone get a screen grab?
Maybe im missing something painfully obvious but what was wrong with wabash’s pants?
I’m guessing the word “WABASH” down the side?

what a uni-treat it was watching the football giants in their classic road unis and the bears in their classic home navy. felt just like the early 60’s… well, maybe not that much!! but at least the unis harkened back to that simple era!!

also in that game I noticed brian urlacher’s “c” logo torn in half (horizontally) on the left side of his helmet…. man the bears have issues with that almost every week!!

lastly, I know it is not “allowed” as the jets have worn the throwbacks twice already, BUT wouldn’t it be something if they could wear them next week versus the browns?? would have to be the first time since the early 60’s since two logo-less helmets faced off….

No offense to who ever picked out the uniform in today’s showcase card. But I can’t stand those. Why can’t they just stick to link?
would have to be the first time since the early 60’s since two logo-less helmets faced off….
or link
good point, tho…i LOVE the titan throwbacks…wish the jesters could make those permanent, especially when the new link is open

I see the P for Psalms in the Tommie Harris pic.

Psalms 91 (not necessarily just a reference to his uni number)

If anything, you would have expected the Jets to wear the Titans duds on Thanksgiving. Yes, I know the NFL doesn’t technically do the Thanksgiving Throwbacks thing league-wide anymore, but that may have been a more appropriate time for it.

Even better would have been had the Jets saved it for Dec. 23 against Tennessee, resulting in a Titans-Titans matchup.
I see the P for Psalms in the Tommie Harris pic.

After looking at it again, I now see the “P” as well. Thanks! I’ll fix the text.

I have a Chinese conversion in my town. It used to be an A&W, but they painted it purple. A couple of years ago, the purple flaked off, and you could see a bunch of orange on there.

In other news, man, do I hate black alternate jerseys.

It would be a lot cooler if it was written vertically, like this:
    W
    A
    B
    A
    S
    H
The way they have it now, the only way it’s oriented correctly is when the player is laying on his back. It’d also be cool if they could get link incorporated into the uni somehow.

I’ve been looking, but can’t find a photo of it… Noticed yesterday that Damon Huard has his muff sewn into his jersey. Basically, his jersey has pockets, rather than wearing the muff-on-a-belt like link do.

Looking at old photos, he clearly doesn’t do it all the time: link

Is this common, and I just didn’t pay close enough attention in the past?
I’ve been looking, but can’t find a photo of it… Noticed yesterday that Damon Huard has his muff sewn into his jersey. Basically, his jersey has pockets, rather than wearing the muff-on-a-belt like link do.

Yeah, other QB’s do it fairly often. Here’s link last week.

But then question of my own…This week he had a normal link with a traditional hand warmer. Any ideas why the change? Both games seemed to be plenty cold.

The AJC quotes Mark Richt as saying that Georgia will wear its black jerseys again against Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl and try to black out the Superdome since they figure to overwhelmingly outnumber Hawaii fans. As a UGA student, I have two problems with this. First, the black jerseys helped create one of the most special games at Sanford Stadium in a long time, and they’re going to where them to what many fans (not me, really) feel is a consolation game for not getting to the BCS Title. Save them for big time home games where you want to pump a little more excitement into the fans and players. Also, blacking out the Superdome is pretty stupid because the team we’re playing also heavily features black in their color scheme.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I actually sort of liked the Rams’ monochromatic look yesterday. I can’t explain it, but I thought it looked good. I generally loath monochromatic unis.

In the NCAA, if Chevy wanted to pay for uniforms for a university could they contract with a company to make uniforms and slap their logo in the same places the Nike swoosh now sits?

I just caught a glimpse of the WVU-Pitt game, plus I was at a bar drinking. But I swear a Pitt d-back had “RIP Sean T” on his forearm sleeve. Did anyone else see this, or was I the far gone?

surely that’s a mixed bag – how’s an opposide side going to easily spot any coverage or pass rush? :D

The fast-food conversion site is pure gold. I’m going to submit a former pizza hut that’s now an Indian restaurant. “The Hut” is the most well-represented chain on that site BTW.

No, you’re right. It was Kennard Cox #5. I wasn’t sure if it was tape or a sleeve but it clearly read “RIP Sean T”.

He’s from Miami and that’s where Taylor was from.

I had actually been trying to find a pic of this but the only one I saw on yahoo had Cox in the background and blurry and couldn’t read it.

I loved it too, but I’m guessing there was a little too much gold for all the uniwatchers who suffer from chromophobia. I’m sure they would rather the “classic” white and blue Penn State/Colts look.

I sent this info to Paul. I was watching a local high school show and a player from this team was shown in a closeup and it was clear that there were extra stripes on his helmet…you could see the layers of the stripes overlapping each other….so it’s definately added on and not anything off center.

I found some pics of their first game and all players had the same stripe, so it’s something that players earn as the season progresses.

My 1 thought to Paul was that it was some sort of “big hit” decal that players earn, and it’s added to the stripe instead of a more traditional helmet decal.

You wrote to Antonio Pierce’s facemask: “his was the only personalized tribute to Taylor that I spotted”.

A football question, maybe somebody can chime in: how many different brands use the same Berlin, Wisconsin-based nylon mesh material for their jerseys? I was at the Edmonton Eskimos Locker Room Sale on the weekend, and there were Ripon, Starter, Puma, and Reebok-branded jerseys, all featuring “Made in Berlin, WI” wash tags. The old MacGregor/Medalist Sand-Knit jerseys were made there as well. Anyone know the actual company name?

Uniform wise I would have rather seen Mizzou (all black) vs. WV (all yellow). I do like LSU’s uniforms a lot, but CAN’T STAND Ohio State’s uniforms. They rank up there with ND and Penn State for being ugly and boring.

People covered it halfway adequately above, but while Oregon’s uniforms on Saturday were about the most atrocious thing ever (especially the gold helmet that did not quite match the yellow on the uniforms), why should Oregon State’s Nike threads be spared criticism? Not a Duck’s fan, at all. Duck’s a nickname, it’s all ME baby. My fan-hood is split between Illinois and Wisconsin, as I didn’t attend a large school myself.

A couple of comments. What the hell is Peter King smoking?? Telling the jets to forget the Titans?? Please, these throwback look better then the Jets current uni’s.

Second, mono-colored uni’s is high school-esq, except for the Colts. They had blue pants not to long ago, and they sucked.

Last, I was having an arguement over the weekend talking about the best college football uniform. I voted for Penn St, while Ohio St., UNC, USC and Michican was in the mix. I was labled as boring because Penn St. doesn’t feature anything. Just a boring white helmet, and plain blue jeresy. Sometimes being simple is beautiful.

Anywhere other than here, if I admitted I’d be tuning in to that Jays uni-reveal webcast, I’d be somewhat ashamed. Nice to be among the like-minded…

A quick check of the Jays online store reveals that the “T” alternate caps are suddenly discounted, which doesn’t bode well for them ever seeing the field again.

As link rightly pointed out, the new road unis are the obvious result of an ad-hoc fix. Too many fonts! The “J” on the hat doesn’t match the new chest workmark, and the numbers introduce a new numbering font, not at all like the slightly italicized numbers on the regulars.

Maybe the reason I don’t hate this as much as some, and don’t get me worng here, I DO usually dislike it, is because none of the high school teams in my conference went monochrome in my day. Mostly just simple color on color, most without even a pant stripe. But if anyone saw link recently in the comments, things are a changin in my area.

The psalm 91 on Tommie Harris’ nasal strip, I believe, is interepreted in the religious hymn On Eagles Wings. Which is a common hymn at funerals. I may be reading too much into it trying to connect a lot of things, but this may be a tribute to Sean Taylor of some sort? Just a guess, hadn’t noticed his nasal strip before so I may be wrong.

They use stickers on the helmet but also make the stripe bigger if you make a big hit or do a good play. I think that was one of those deals where PUMA bought Logo Athletic so get the NFL license. I saw some shots where the Puma logo was just stitched over where the LA had been. Puma never made the jerseys, and in fact they haven’t had a license for footwear in years. Too bad, I loved ’em.

The clash of the Jets green and Dolphins teal has bothered me since the 70’s.

i totally agree…the titan throwbacks are gorgeous…and while the J-E-T-S green is kinda meh…when they couple the green pants with the green jerseys it is quite possibly the WORST uni in football

You must be joking. It is hands down THE BEST UNIFORM in football.

Definitly not the best in football, home Packers or Bears Iimo. But, not bad either. I usually hate the monochrome look. But 2 color teams do seem to pull it off better than, say, the Titans who look terrible when they match their pants to their jerseys. But honestly, as a whole group of uni’s, both regular, monochrome-switchup, and throwbacks, the Jets gotta be number one.

    Monochrome looks high school, period.
Nothing looks more high school than the Colts
Monochrome (see Seahawks, Seattle) is high school or ARENA League at best. For classic unis..you cannot beat the Pack, the Colts, the Bears, or the Cowboys. Browns, too. There might be a few more, but being a longtime Dallas fan, I love ethe Cowboys look. And all this time, I never looked twice at those (silver-green) pants. I just figured they where some weird variation.

yeah concerning the uni number rule in the NFL, what happens if a player such as michael vick or devin hester switch positions do they have to make a mid season change or lets say anquan boldin for some crazy reason goes in if kurt warner and tim rattay get hurt , would he have to change?

Thanks for the item on the Barbarians — the Ba-Bahs are one of rugby’s great traditions that really has no correspondance to anything in America. The tradition of a rugger wearing his own club’s tie ups (socks) when playing for a select or touring side trickles down to all levels of the game. Also one of the ruggers pictured was wearing a blue scrum cap — the choice to wear headgear is left to the player who provides his own. On each side there may be many different models and colors of scrum caps playing together on the pitch.

In this case, I most certainly think it did. Consider that when the Pats redesigned their uniforms the way they look now (just before or the year of the first Super Bowl), Adidas was the supplier. Now, normally, there are no logos on the socks, but the “design element” used to SCREAM Adidas in context. So why haven’t they changed? I’m not sure. Maybe you keep your Super Bowl winning uniform.

I disagree. Adidas outfitted several other teams at the same time they outfitted the Pats, and none of those other teams went triple-striped. Sometimes a stripe pattern is just a stripe pattern. And in this case, it looks really, really good.

The story goes that when the owner of the Lions first saw the stadium from the air, he remarked that it was a silver dome. When it opened, it was called Pontiac Metropolitan Stadium. Thankfully, the Silverdome name stuck. As far as unis go, the Lions need to ditch the black alts, those are just hideous! They also need to redo the lion logo on the helmets. Local pundits say it looks like a wimpy lion jumping after bubbles. I say make it more ferocious looking, perhaps a front-facing roaring lion or an oblique angle ala the Jaguars.
