Gobble-Gobble, Pass the Gravy, Etc.

We all have something to be thankful for today. In my case, it’s that my favorite team has traded for a player who wears stirrups every single day — even if they’ll be covered up by shin guards for half of the game. I hope the holiday brings each of you something similarly heartening. — Paul

    Hi Paul.

What are stirrups [aside from the obvious use when riding horses]? I’m a very part time baseball fan and have noticed it mentioned a lot, but not really known what they are.

Poor soul! What better day to learn about stirrups than on Thanksgiving. Google an old time ballplayer and check out his socks, like the Mick: link

Striped ones are best, like the Braves, Cards, and Red Sox used to wear.

It looks like the Lions and Packers are wearing their normal uniforms on Thursday [no throwbacks]. Anybody else hear different?

Ok. Let’s try this part first:

Paul, you may be thankful for acquiring a stirrup-clad catcher, but I have to tell you I am very un-thankful for losing one of the best-looking and best-playing, if not best-dressed Twins, link to the LA Angels of Annaheim. A big gobble gobble to CraPohlad this Thanksgiving!

P.S. IAM thankful for the dusting of snow, however. I love snow.

P.P.S. I am caught in the spam filter and trying to reprint!

Now, let me try the first part again, although the question has already been answered:

    elliot:

Jamie Moyer link. Look at the red part on each leg below the knee.

Ok. Screw the other pic of a stirruped Jamie Moyer. I just want to wish y’all a Happy Turkey Day!

Cowboys are wearing their normal home whites today. They’ll wear throwbacks next Thursday against the Packers.

Elliot, here’s a link, as modeled by my all-time favorite team, the Big Red Machine.

Here’s an example of link, as worn by current Yankee coach Ron Guidry during his playing days.

    Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Check out this story from Nashville. A high school girls basketball team had “illegal uniforms” and had to give up 18 technical free throws, 2 for each player wearing the illegal uniform. Anybody ever hear of anything like this?

Chris in Nashville, that just ain’t right. I am all for uniformity in uniforms, but I think the punishment definitely does not fit the ‘crime’. I hope they revisit that rule in the off-season and revise it.

Good article on uniforms tastes and trends from the link

I think y’all will recognize one of the folks that’s quoted….

Happy Thanksgiving Day, everyone! I’ve already gobbled all my turkey in October thanks to our Thanksgiving being then, but you guys have a great day, eat well, and enjoy the football. :o)

Paul, you may be excited to see Estrada in all his stirrup-y goodness, but you’ll not be so happy to have him when he can’t throw out a single base runner and refuses to run out anything.

I’ll trade those stirrups any day!

The rules for high school basketball uniforms in Texas are similar. I have seen technicals given for players whose numbers were not given to the bookkeeper beforehand (almost always, someone has switched jersey’s and not told the coach). Also, no numerals over 5 are allowed. There is also a rule that says that players cannot enter the game with blood on their uniform. I have seen players switch uniforms and allow the other team to shoot technicals so that a better player can get in the game.

Enjoy those stirrups whilst you can. This will be his 4th team in four years. He’s the most unathletic player in sports, let alone baseball. Weakest arm at catcher in the majors. Usually comes off as lazy.

But yeah, the stirrups will be there every game. Which counts for something, I guess.

    Paul…

we (using the royal “we” for all mets fans) may have acquored a stirrup wearing player, but you’re missing the far far bigger upside of the trade…

    we go RID of mota

/i would have taken an old shoe for him
    //happy turkey day all

Thank you for not asking what “breezers” are. Don’t know if I could handle another one of those debates.

Have a great Thanksgiving everybody, and congratulations if you actually have the NFL Network.

I’m thankful for the Green, Gold, Silver, Black, Blue, Orange and this website.

    Go A’s.

    Go Raiders.

    Go Warriors.

I totally agree with you Nicole. Estrada hit .278 with 10 home runs and 54 RBIs last season. Estrada underwent knee and elbow surgery immediately after the season, and the elbow injury likely contributed to his trouble throwing out baserunners. Estrada threw out six of 79 baserunners and ranked last in the Majors with a 7.6 percent success rate. I will miss the stirrups for sure (He especially looked great on retro Fridays) But I am glad to have Jason Kendall in his place. So that is something that Brewers fans are thankful for.

    Merry Thanksgiving from Wisconsin everyone!

da da da da, da da da da… GO PACK GO!

RE: Tennessee girls basketball team not wearing the correct uni’s and giving up free throws.

“What do you expect from a state with 2 million people and only 3 last names.”

The National Federation (the high school governing body) set up these basketball uniform rules three years ago (mainly, all home teams must wear white, among other things). The Federation gave schools three years before the uniform rules became mandatory. For something like this to happen is inexcusable.

Same thing for the football uniform rules, which I belive become law in ’09.

That color scheme always cracked me up because it’s a direct rip-off of UGA.

Hey everyone. Happy thanksgiving. Keep an eye out in the Packer/Lion game for the NFL Equipment logo on the packer’s jerseys. They are not on the yoke for alot of players, like driver and grant, but on the jersey right above and in betweeen the numbers.

I think they have for awhile. Shows up better when they are outside in sunlight.

Florida will be wearing black jerseys tom. night as they do every year against FSU. Im assuming they will be new ones

The HFHS gave the schools the 3-4 year grace period for uniforms knowing that teams get new unis about that often, so it’s not like they were forcing every school to make an unplanned expendature. If a school fails to make sure their new unis conform to the new rules within that time period, it’s their own dang fault.

I may not be 100% on this, but I think most NFL teams have some sort of “sparkle” in their helmets. I have seen many Packer helmets and the authentic ones do “shimmer” and “sparkle” in the light.

The other day I said that I consider black to be an implied team color for all, but what I failed to say was that sometimes it’s best not to use it. This is one of those times, the garnet and gold are too dark of a shade to provide enough contrast with the black.

I like to get behind the rising tide of public opinion demanding, on a now practically daily basis, that the Orioles return “The Bird” to their caps. The 1966 model — black cap with orange bill — should be the standard that Baltimore fans rally around.

On a similiar topic, the time is now for “Baltimore” to return to the road jerseys. Now that the Nationals are in residence down the road, let’s not stand for the argument that the Os are a regional team and that having the name of Charm City across the players’ chests might offend some outlaying sensibilities.

I like the current bird they have. The detail is great, I wish the Blue Jays would adopt that look. Ball caps with didn’t colored beaks do not look good. I agree with having Baltimore on the away jerseys however.

My first choice would be to return to the ’66 uniforms — not only as a matter of taste, but in order to wake up the echos and hopefully point the way to the road back.

On the Blue Jays, I thought the original road models — all blue with the bird profile, ball & leaf — was a solid look.

Are you sure they are going to be able to wear all back against Florida. The game is at Florida and the Gators are most likely going to wear their blue tops. Thats two solid colors.

Bizarre Uni moment just occured in the Dallas-Jets game: #63 (Kyle Kosier, DAL) was called for holding #63 (Dewayne Robertson, NYJ) by #63 (Referee whose name I cannot find at the moment).

The St. Louis Rams, the Arizona Cardinals, the Indianapolis Colts — three of many reasons why I wish teams that move to another city would leave the uniforms, colors, records, etc., in the original city (lucky Browns)

Not directly uni-related (or, at all…..), but Arizona State painted a drumstick on Sparky’s pitchfork at midfield for their game tonight. Please tell me someone else thinks this is as cool as I think it is so I don’t feel so easily amused…..

Dallas Clark does not have a flag (I don’t think).

Meanwhile, several readers pointed out an additional Cowboys annoyance that Uni Watch neglected to cover: The sleeve stripes on the team’s white jersey are outlined in black. This quirk, which dates back to the Landry/Staubach era, makes absolutely zero sense, since no other Dallas uni component is black-outlined. In fact, there’s no black anyplace else in the Cowboys’ design scheme, which means the black-accented stripes are yet another rogue element. Unique? Very. Annoying? Exceedingly.

..speaking of the NFL Network, you didn’t miss much in the Colts|Falcons bore fest. The Falcons had no hope even if they had the dog killer at QB. Atlanta did have a 10-0 lead at one point. It was actually nice to see zero throwbacks yesterday. Half the time they’re done in error anyways.

I saw some Arizona State players with the NCAA pennant patch w/conf. logo on the right side of their jerseys and some with a Pac-10 logo.
Also, to the dude that thinks the Falcons ripped off UGA, the Falcons’ original colors were red, black, white and gold, as evidenced by the wonderful original Falcons displayed in an earlier post. Red, black, and white to honor the Dawgs, black, white and gold for Georgia Tech. It’s called an homage, not a ripoff.

Sadly, they didn’t live up to it). Leon Washington (pictured) was playing in the NFL by the time the uniform was actually used.

Canty sustained an eye injury before he came to the NFL and uses a special facemask with extra bars to protect himself (and a visor).
